- striker1211, on 11/11/2007, -1/+60This seems an awful lot like the PSP firmware wars
- threepio, on 11/10/2007, -5/+38Has anyone thought that maybe Apple's making this easy to break? Like, they have to contractually "patch" holes... but they're not making much of an effort to?
- DogGunn, on 11/09/2007, -0/+26Wow, what's even better is the secpack for 1.1.2 has been retrieved, and the root update file has been decrypted.
This means that the unlock is very close to being released! VERY CLOSE - tokinama, on 11/09/2007, -1/+25that was quick wasn't it.. I wonder why Apple wants to lock up iPod Touch. let the hackers play around with it and find security holes. and let Apple fix it.. thats easy right!
- Dustmuffins, on 11/10/2007, -5/+29HAY GUYS HO DO I HAX?
- blogger123, on 11/10/2007, -2/+26well that didn't take long .....
- MikeyisaFag, on 11/10/2007, -1/+24Like they always say, "you can't hold a good iPhone down."
... or something like that. - inactive, on 11/09/2007, -1/+23Apple better stay away from messin with any safari apps, specially
http://seeqpod.com/m - eschompthis, on 11/09/2007, -0/+15yeah this will show apple to fix this before its even released
- DogGunn, on 11/10/2007, -6/+20Wow, that was amazing. Nice work to the hackers - that will show Apple!
- davidhildreth, on 11/09/2007, -0/+12The iPod Touch was jailbroken, not the iPhone.
- Hamletlere, on 11/09/2007, -0/+9Kind of like they do on a Mac computer, huh?
I develop embedded software for a living. The solution (which as far as I know, Apple has done) is to have a protected bootstrap that can't be screwed up, that would allow the running firmware to be overwritten with the original firmware at device bootup, allowing the user to always get back to a known (factory-fresh) state. How hard would it be for the Apple Geniuses, if the customer does come crying, to take a iPod Touch in the back and reload it with original firmware?
If software can actually damage the hardware, then it is a crappy OS and hardware. I don't believe this is the case. - KennMac, on 11/10/2007, -0/+8Hay! I'm in ur furmware, breakin ur jailz.
- LeeSoong, on 11/09/2007, -3/+10Apple Retail Stores have a really annoying Sign put up saying if you modify it - we wont fix it - it's out of warranty!
Way to go and support your 'Think Different' creative customer base - Apple!
Treating your customers like criminal idiots and insulting them to their face, I guess it's a new marketing idea... - cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+7Oh gawsh. Apple's secretly on our side, I should have realised by now!
- starkruzr, on 11/10/2007, -1/+7Why would they just give up?
- eclipxe, on 11/09/2007, -0/+6It is a screenshot from the iPod - not a photo. Screenshots can only be taken with a 3rd party app, hence it is jailbroken.
- ytsohptwhere, on 11/10/2007, -5/+11When are they just going to give up?
- mysql101, on 11/09/2007, -0/+5apple is just fixing security holes. unlike windows or osx where you can install whatever you want, apple locked down the iphone/itouch and so the security holes allow us to break into the system and install whatever we want. it's good that apple is fixing the holes, otherwise we'd end up with a bunch of ipods that get rooted when we visited websites.
i doubt there is an insider intentionally creating bugs that the hackers are then exploiting - it would be too easy for them to see who's patching crap code. to go even further, the hackers EXPLAIN the exploit to the public, making it less likely. - Ninjab3ar, on 11/10/2007, -2/+7hes talking about apple, not the hackers (i hope)
- sholt, on 11/09/2007, -0/+5likely it will fail a checksum comparison and be forced to restore - removing the jailbreak.
- danjal, on 11/11/2007, -0/+4sorry, but this just shows that apple products are as easy to hack as any other device.. given if people can be bothered enough to try
- jfb392, on 11/09/2007, -0/+4Both devices are free, not just the touch.
As proof, the key for 1.1.2 iPhone is here: http://iphone.fiveforty.net/wiki/index.php/Decrypt ... - michelspc, on 11/09/2007, -1/+5There's a difference between a jailbroken iPhone and an unlocked iPhone. Apple may not care about the jailbreaks but you can bet they will do everything possible to keep you locked into the AT&T network.
- Proctor, on 11/10/2007, -0/+4Holy *****, great find.
- Digg413, on 11/09/2007, -0/+3I'm updating my iPhone right now through iTunes - phone was acting weird, and 1.1.2 is being downloaded as the update.
- KennMac, on 11/09/2007, -0/+3They run basically the same firmware. The same hole is on 1.1.1 iPhone/iPod and has been carried over to 1.1.2. That's why it was announced so "fast"
- Speed, on 11/10/2007, -2/+5Amazing, even when Apple is on the "opposing side", Digg is defending them...
- rkho, on 11/09/2007, -3/+61.1.2 is only currently jailbroken on the iPod Touch and not the iPhone. Please do your research before you post.
- LordC, on 11/10/2007, -1/+4I only wish Sony and Apple would stop fighting a losing battle. Hackers will always find a way.
Surely it's better to be an opportunist, and turn it to an advantage?
Open up the iPhone, open up the PSP. To some extent at least. Developers of homebrew applications could work with the big companies, doesn't have to be against them. - KennMac, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2No one said anything about 'wanting' 1.1.2. They're talking about dealing with getting stuck with it.
- dimplemonkey, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2http://digg.com/apple/TUAW_1_1_2_Jailbreak_Tests
Just updated from TUAW. They've got both of them done. - mclihah2, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2As rkho said.. this is the ipod touch, not the iphone..yet. It would have been nice if the title of this post could have reflected that.
- feebes, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2That would seem impressive if Apple was releasing these new firmware updates to stop the hacking. However they have openly stated they do not endorse nor condemn the hacking. So these updates will continue to come easy-to-hack because Apple isn't trying to stop it.
- KennMac, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2Way to talk out of your ass. The tiff exploit hole has absolutely nothing to do with the stability of the phone.
Closing a window in your house doesn't make the house more structurly sound. - chitoiup, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2Show them what?
- inactive, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2nice
- anonymouse91, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2Same for me. I haven't really kept up to date with all the iPhone/iPod Touch jailbreaking but after hearing this, I'm getting really tempted to get an iPhone today. Well, as long as 1.1.2 can be unlocked.
- 80hd, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2apple is probably more concerned about this..
"Just buy a Touch and load it with all the same programs instead of getting the more expensive iPhone that needs a monthly plan to do anything." - kriminalintent, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2I never knew about that web app, got more?
- Hamletlere, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2Really? That's odd. I have the "hacked" TIFF fix on my iPhone, and it hasn't crashed once. Are you sure of this information? Got any sources?
- MrPineapples, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2I'm confident it'll be cracked. so much so I just ordered one.
- neoneddy, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2spam
- phatguy471, on 11/11/2007, -2/+4It's not going to put it to rest. It never will. There are a large amount of people who want third party apps to extend the functionality of the product that they paid for (my self included). As long as there is a large community for this the hacking will never rest. Look at all the game consoles they are all hacked to extend their functionality its the same for the iphone and ipod touch and any other gadget. It will always be a cat and mouse game, if you don't like it, ide suggest reading another site or moving your reading interests to something else.
- KDAY12, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2February.
- jivemasta, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2The only way to get a screenshot is by running a third party app.
- DLicious, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2If I update from 1.1.1 to 1.1.2 on an already jailbroken Ipod will it keep all the 3rd party apps or will I have to re-jailbreak it?
- nomoreink, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2Holy freakin' awesome.
- inactive, on 11/10/2007, -1/+3The problem is these exploits could be used to execute malicious code - so Apple has to fix them as much as it needs to secure OS X. Think about it!
- starkruzr, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2"Jailbroken" is more accurate.
