iPhone WebApps Appearing on Apple's Downloads Feed?
9to5mac.com — It looks like Apple is gearing up to put the iPhone Applications built with he Web 2.0 "SDK" on their software downloads page. Thanks to a commenter, we found them in Apple's "recent downloads RSS feed". However, when you click on the link you end up at a unused page at Apple.

- willynilly, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Oh yeah, hellelujiah. ***** Web-based excuses for apps.
Oh, and in case you've lived under a rock for the last two years: THERE IS NO "WEB 2.0".
- willynilly, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Oh yeah, hellelujiah. ***** Web-based excuses for apps.
- gregdogum, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4Same essential article made popular 20 mins before this. Buried as a dupe.

- cphelps, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1"an unused page" is what it should be, thanks.
- over90000, on 10/11/2007, -7/+9I don't understand how Apple gets away with stuff like this. They are worse than MS when it comes to closing down their hardware and software.
- MacParrot, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11Right, like the Zune...oh wait. OK, how about the Xbox? Darn it! Well, their keyboards and mice are pretty open.
Pay attention, there's a test later. Apple makes an OS and their own line of computers to run that OS. They have much less than 10% of the market and people who buy their equipment seem to understand that a lot of it is closed. They make the iPod and management software to buy and store content on it. They do have a majority share with it, but it's not like there isn't a ton of other MP3 players available, so no monopoly there. They make a cell phone. It has less than 1% of the market and it too is closed. However they have been pretty upfront about who or what companies will be invited to exclusive deals with it. If it pisses you off, choose another phone. It's called choice and free will.- over90000, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3>They do have a majority share with it, but it's not like there isn't a ton of other MP3 players available, so no monopoly there.
By the same logic, MS doesn't have the monopoly with Windows either! See what I did there?- MacParrot, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Sandisk, Sony, Creative, Toshiba, MS Zune, Samsung, Archos, Cowon.
Now, name other major business/ home operating systems besides Apple and Linux derivatives with major companies providing 3rd-party software. Also, both the US DOJ and the EU found Microsoft to use non-competitive practices against hardware and software companies, or did you forget that?

- SSUK, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2You realise all this is because Apple boasted about the iPhone having a variation of OSX in it...
- r3zonance, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5But Apple didn't say that the variant of OS X would allow you to install your own apps did they. In fact they said exactly the opposite, so why the hell is anyone surprised?
- willynilly, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1No *****. They make fun of Microsoft endlessly because of MS's "security problems", but then claim they can't allow third-party apps on the iPhone because of security concerns. Meanwhile, there are millions of Windows Mobile phones running around with third-party apps on them, without a single one bringing a network down.
So basically, Apple is admitting that they can't pull off what Microsoft did years ago.

- SSUK, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0Come on Apple, put Flash 7 (greater would be swell too) in the iPhone's Safari... Pretty please? Pretty please with sugar on top?
- Karmavs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'd be asking Adobe. It's not an open platform…

- FoxMcCloud1, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0I second the request for Flash. Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease?
Also calsium, I think the new downloads will run locally on your iphone, where as the ones on appsafari.com are just web only. Now im not sure if you can save those sites as a bookmarklet and run locally as well...? Anyone clarify that?
Also, did anyone see iFun on the list of app dl from apple....? iFun as in customize your bg and icons? (that would be neat) Where is summerboard?! - dukenuk3m, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0so will these work with the iPod touch too?
- Karmavs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2They're websites. Guess.
- willgonz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Not to exciting. Have they even thought that people would take their iPhone on a trip for a week without a computer and would like to install new Applications. Sure they are one step closer with the iTunes store on iPhone, but Installer.App has the best method. Download new apps without docking or syncing. Leave your computer at home.
- Karmavs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1the iPhone can browse websites. The web apps are webpages. The web apps directory is assumedly a webpage. I'm not seeing where iTunes comes in…
- ASacredCow, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0OK, I have to agree that Windows doesn't have infinite space in the task bar, but does the dock have infinite space?
