- pauldy, on 04/15/2008, -0/+12I hear you on the blog spam but this is actually a live blog of TUAW readers testing out the software and reporting their experiences with it live so it isn't exactly blog spam because there is actual content not just a copy paste summary of a press release with a link to the original software vendors site.
- viewofeverlast, on 04/15/2008, -0/+10I can't wait to drop my AT&T plan down to the cheapest possible option. With VOIP and 802.1X coming, I'll only need to use AT&T's services while driving!
- MikeTRose, on 04/15/2008, -0/+8Yep, the Fring client is a universal IM tool in addition to VoIP for SIP, Gizmo and Skype. Not too shabby.
- bigsteve, on 04/15/2008, -0/+5He's making a joke about how VoIP, when used on a wifi network that isn't dedicated strictly to VoIP, needs some traffic shaping / prioritization in place else it's going to sound like a bad cell phone call. The router won't know your email packets from his VoIP packets. You don't notice when your email is 5 seconds late, but you sure will know if parts of your voice convo is 1 second late.
- aaronmcdonald, on 04/15/2008, -0/+5Just installed it now and its really good at such an early stage and aslo, I finally have an IM that works with MSN on 1.1.4
- turpenine, on 04/15/2008, -1/+5it factors in a lot more than just number of diggs already. most importantly here, the length of time it accrues the diggs.
- aaronmcdonald, on 04/15/2008, -1/+5Its called Fring, you should check out this story about it on Digg.com heres the link for you:

you moron. - FDDIcent, on 04/15/2008, -6/+10Well can't we just wait until June when 2.0 comes out. Steve has already said VOIP will be supported over wifi.
- meatmcguffin, on 04/15/2008, -0/+3"The biggest problem I have with VOIP is the *something* microphone effect where the other person can only hear fifty percent of what you're saying"
I can't figure out the tenth word and it's really pissing me off!
Edit: frozen? - hckynck20, on 04/15/2008, -0/+3What are you talking about? the iphone supports WEP right now and is getting 802.1x support in june.
- priegog, on 04/15/2008, -0/+3You can do whatever you want, but for the rest of us who don't want/care to be sherpered, this is great news.
- davoudk, on 04/15/2008, -0/+3Well it's also in beta so what did you expect? I'm sure they will refine it and make it better in the coming months.
- wellyuk, on 04/15/2008, -0/+3"We"? Who is "we"? Why should "we" wait when it's available now?
- rebotfc, on 04/15/2008, -2/+5I like turtles.
- movd, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2yeah me too they are slow but totally awesome
- movd, on 04/15/2008, -1/+3and your iphone will never be free not even with the sdk unless your jailbreak it!
- pauldy, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2The digg velocity.
- griz, on 04/15/2008, -1/+3You knew who he was talking about so apparently you also recognize him as "Steve".
- GliTCH82, on 04/15/2008, -1/+3You're an idiot. Erica Sadun has done a lot for the iPhone community, what exactly do you have against what she does?
- raynevandunem, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2"broken"
I think he wrote it like that to parody the jarring, distorted sound effects of a VOIP conversation over, say, Google Talk.
And I can attest that VOIP currently sucks for having a normal live conversation over a VOIP-enabled instant messaging protocol. It's like listening to a cell phone conversation that fades out when you're completely out of range from your normal network coverage, but much much worse in terms of audio fidelity and legibility.
Voicemail over IP, however, works much better than live VOIP, so at least the aforementioned IM protocols are enabled for sending voice posts that can be received online. What would be awesome is a means for posting voice messages and replies in the same way that you'd post text comments to a web forum like Digg; the best example, albeit a poor example, would be the way that YouTube allows for video replies to other videos, although they are not treated in the same fashion as text comments on YouTube. - dimplemonkey, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2works as advertised on my iPhone.
- GliTCH82, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1I've got a Q6600, 8800GTS and Vista and it's fine. Check your Firefox extensions.
- inactive, on 04/15/2008, -1/+2But as for Bill...?
- DaffyDuck, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1You mean digg speed. Velocity is a vector quantity.
/smartass - tomlit, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1seems fine to me
- postitnote, on 04/15/2008, -1/+2Is it just me, or is TUAW's website have performance issues when scrolling, when using firefox 3.0? It's been slow under firefox 2.0, but not this slow.
- orph3us, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1Will the official version support call forwarding of your native cell number to voip? I currently have crap for at&t reception in my house, but have full wifi signal all the way around..
- Baryn, on 04/15/2008, -2/+3Gates
- alecks, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1Not all VOIP sucks... just depends how it's implemented. Our company users Cisco Voip (the phones from CTU in 24), and it's flawless.
- inactive, on 04/15/2008, -1/+2WTF
- dliberty, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1Thanks to the folks in Israel working at fring!
- aenone, on 01/14/2009, -0/+0Thank you! but i don't have iPhone :)
Buy VoIP Hardware -> http://www.voiptoshop.com - njet, on 04/15/2008, -0/+0I'm sure you know what "live" means - don't be so hard on yourself :)
- Beanbones, on 04/15/2008, -3/+3n/t
- pgustafs, on 06/24/2008, -0/+0i'd still expect beta to at least work some of the time. all my iphone does is immediately exit fring (e.g. CrAsH) any time i try 1) test call or 2) skype out.
- GliTCH82, on 04/15/2008, -2/+2We can call him whatever we want.
- seanthepatrick, on 04/15/2008, -2/+2I have it running on my iPhone, and, well, it sucks. It crashes all the time and Skype call quality is awful at best.
But, it does work ok as a aim/msn/gtalk chat client.. - zeiben, on 04/15/2008, -1/+1Agreed. It's not worth all the hassle of setting up a VOIP client and jailbreaking your phone if all you have to say over that VOIP client is "BAAAAAAA"

- ibeetle, on 04/15/2008, -9/+2Just say no to Spam. TUAW has/had nothing to do with this. Go to the source.
