- Eminemdrdre00, on 01/10/2009, -7/+220I refuse to praise AT&T. I pay $80 a month for my iPhone and "unlimited data", yet text messages are still extra! >:\
- kent1146, on 01/10/2009, -11/+158***** Apple. ***** AT&T.
Jailbreak your iPhone, and run PDANet. It turns your iPhone into a wireless WAN router. - diemorph, on 01/10/2009, -1/+103How about $0. That sounds reasonable to me. I've already paid for the bandwidth, now let me enjoy it.
- inactive, on 01/10/2009, -2/+83$10... $100... $1000... I'm still tired of bending over and getting the full shaft... balls and all, from telecom companies.
- Blandyman, on 01/10/2009, -4/+67or you could do a little e-mail trickery... lets say your friends number is 704-202-1201 and they use att, you send an email to 7042021201@myatt.net. Every carrier has this system set up. Then, they can just reply to the text (which is how they would receive it) and itll pop up in your inbox.
- mehan, on 01/10/2009, -0/+51how much extra for cut & paste?
- ylluminate, on 01/10/2009, -1/+45Still, I feel it should be free. $10 is not bad, but they are not honest with us at unlimited. Sure, they could call it a convenience fee or such. They need to revamp their plans; not a happy AT&T customer at the moment anyway. Love the iPhone, hate the service provider. Of course none of them are really that great as I can't say much on the positive side about Sprint when we used them for all of our phones either.
- Eisen4, on 01/10/2009, -8/+46Its 2009... USB 1.0? How did you even get allowed on digg?
- inactive, on 01/10/2009, -1/+38Especially when it doesn't cost the carrier anything to send text messages. SMS messages ride for free on the carriers data channel. SMS is the biggest scam in the cell phone biz.
- ehaugan, on 01/10/2009, -3/+39Man, AT&T sure does a good job of setting the expections for their customers so low that they are actually excited when something that should be free they have to pay $10 for. Suckers
- rolf, on 01/10/2009, -0/+32Incredible, really? My tmobile razr, as crappy as that phone is compared to a smartphone, does tethering for free with the data plan. In fact, I expect tethering with a data plan in the first place.
$10 on top of the $30 is double dipping. I view it as almost the same as if my ISP started charging extra $$$ to actually have a computer connected to the modem/router. Thanks ATT! Please let me bend over even lower to make it more enjoyable for you! - WestonP, on 01/10/2009, -5/+34For only an extra $10/month, I'd sign up without a second thought! I doubt we'll be that lucky though, and if it's going to be $30/month, I'll probably just continue to borrow a friend's wireless broadband card when I need to VPN into work from remote areas.
- elmetald00d, on 01/10/2009, -3/+32so I can get a reply hours later? The point of a text message is speed.
- Typhoon2009, on 01/10/2009, -1/+27I still cannot comprehend why you get charged for receiving a text.
- thinkdifferent, on 01/10/2009, -8/+34So send email instead of text messages.....
- mrsteveman1, on 01/10/2009, -4/+29Not unless you want to use one of the various halfass "iPhone killers". This is the ***** up situation we have in the U.S, you want a specific phone you get a specific carrier.
- Oldsmobile, on 01/10/2009, -1/+22What I don't get is, why doesn't Apple offer tethering in Europe, because over here the phone companies don't give a damn if you tether or not.
- Bender, on 01/10/2009, -2/+21Jailbreak + PDANet = screw AT&T's charges and get it FREE!
- Paul1245, on 01/10/2009, -1/+20Just jailbreak your iPhone and its free. Its incredibly easy to do, so why let AT&T rape you repeatedly?
- Culyt, on 01/10/2009, -0/+18I don't see why you should pay money for something that is free to both you and the mobile carriers.
All you need is for the wifi in your phone to talk to your laptop and go through the 3G. And you can do this now with a jailbroken iPhone.
Or is there something more to 'tethering' that I'm not aware of? (ie direct 3G to laptop, no need to be connected through the iPhone?).
☢ - HeavensNight, on 01/10/2009, -2/+20email would cover your out mail but wouldn't incoming texts still get charged like normal..
its a sad greedy fee either way - reddikilowatt, on 01/10/2009, -10/+28Interesting. Charging extra for tethering? I suppose you have to use a wire of some sort as well, while civilized society can use Bluetooth and keep the phone in their pocket.
Enjoy your little farting application. You sure pay a lot for the privilege. - jakereilly, on 01/10/2009, -7/+25Yeah but in reality, there isn't.
Sorry. - Lethargic, on 01/10/2009, -0/+16Came in to post this. $30 one-time fee and you have the same feature, but better. As long as AT&T keeps locking out features of my phone, I'm going to keep working to avoid their silly rules.
Remember who paid for the nationwide networks they charge you to access. (That would be the US Taxpayer) - floor, on 01/10/2009, -9/+25Yea, but there is nobody in Europe worth talking to, so $20 is a little high there.
- CraigB12, on 01/10/2009, -1/+17Yeah, as long as I'm paying for unlimited data, there is no way I'm going to pay extra for this. Jailbreak for NetShare, and flip my middle finger at AT&T because you know what? ***** THEM.
- Blandyman, on 01/10/2009, -2/+16If hes still on USB 1.0, what makes you think he has any Bluetooth capabilities on his computer?
- Bootes, on 01/10/2009, -2/+15If you're smart the iPhone does it for free as well.
- Hazardc, on 01/10/2009, -0/+13uhhhh I have alltel and my phone tethers for free already which my phone's data plan. (which is 30 a month for unlimited, rev A)
I guess since it's the iPhone, not charging an extra 50 dollars a month makes it seem like some great deal - inactive, on 01/10/2009, -2/+14I hope you Americans get your tethering. Hopefully then everyone else in the world where it's always been within our service agreements the whole time will be allowed to as well.
- yutewa00, on 01/10/2009, -2/+14U are getting assraped by AT&T. I'm paying 20$ for 1200min , 1000SMS or MMS, 1GB data transfer. Im located in Europe. I will maybe excede talk time some day but never data transfer. I've been using it on my iPhone for nearly two years all the time and I never used more than 150MB.
- kevinmotel, on 01/10/2009, -1/+13Unlimited means I can have as much as I want. 1Kb of date vs 1Gb, it makes no difference.
- summer0f89, on 01/10/2009, -0/+12they are trying to minimize their customers' use of the 'unlimited' data, and will therefore charge you for anything that would encourage you to use more bandwidth
- CarzorStelatis, on 01/10/2009, -1/+12AT&T sold the customer an 'unlimited' plan therefore it is perfectly legitimate (and therefore not at all some 'entitlement attitude') for the customer to expect the plan to be unlimited.
- foolishwolf, on 01/10/2009, -1/+11Quit your bitching man, you knew what you were getting into when you went into it. You agreed to the plan. I pay 90 a month for my iPhone plan so spare me.
- enrq, on 01/10/2009, -1/+11@jayselle
"Bandwidth isn't free for AT&T" and that's why they are getting paid for it, nobody's getting it for free, but if they advertise unlimited then it should be... unlimited, no?
"I'm so sick of this entitlement attitude" but yet you're not sick of companies saying unlimited and meaning "umlimited"? - Rustymetal, on 01/10/2009, -3/+13Does it matter? the big 4 wireless companys are doing an illegal thing called collusion. Other words price fixing. If you don't think so you are simply brain washed.
BUT there is no doubt, the iPhone data service+voice+text is the most expensive monthly plan out of every carrier's smart phone plans. - Digger1123, on 01/10/2009, -0/+10actually that $80 figure would include unlimited text messages.
- bagelmaster, on 01/10/2009, -1/+11Complain about what? A private company that isn't a monopoly asking too much for their devices? If you don't like the price don't buy it.
- rocke86, on 01/10/2009, -6/+15Ouch, $120 extra a year to use data you already paid $360 a year for. When in doubt about a cellphone plan multiply by 12, it is easier to understand in year form. I pay $80 a year for my tracfone, but only use it for emergencies and quick info exchange. Can't help but laugh at the chat, text, and data addicts getting screwed on cell bills.
- mrsteveman1, on 01/10/2009, -5/+14USB 1.0 can handle more data than you could ever hope to pull from AT&Ts network.....besides there is always bluetooth which is a much more useful way to tether a phone anyway.
- codyman, on 01/10/2009, -1/+10They should just make "locking" phones down to a particular network illegal... that way telecoms could actually face free market competition where they will have to fight for your dollar rather than just jump you in the alley way and have their way with you
- enrq, on 01/10/2009, -0/+9WTF?? free market competition? you give people that and next they'll want no bailouts for rich companies in tough economic times... you're uhn-american, stop complaining and go serve ur country
/s - bleutuna, on 01/10/2009, -0/+8It should be free. No if, ands or buts.
- unusualbob, on 01/10/2009, -1/+9why are you guys burying him? Hes correct you know.
Full speed usb 1.0 is 12Mbits. The absolute most you can expect from 3G is 2.4Mbits, and that is shared by all the users in a sector. - Sherman901, on 01/10/2009, -1/+9Why in the world would you sign up for a plan like that? That's a lot of money!
- Tyr7BE, on 01/10/2009, -4/+12After having so many iphone owners msg my bb about how they can't view the mms I sent them, about how they need a google maps link because they can't copy paste an address I sent them, and showing me these "killer apps" that make me shrug and show them my blackberry doing the exact same thing on a 2 year old phone, I'm not so impressed.
- javaroast, on 01/10/2009, -1/+9Entitlement? what the hell are you talking about. You seem to look at this as a one-sided equation. That a corporations role is to make profits... the other side of that is that as a consumer my role is to get as much as I can for as little as I can.
- Digger1123, on 01/10/2009, -3/+11I will just continue to use NetShare.
- Blandyman, on 01/10/2009, -0/+7Are you ***** crazy? At first I agreed with your plan (100 for everything unlimited is pretty awesome) but as soon as you mentioned 80 for unlimited tethering...
Are you on drugs dude? -
