- lazyrussian, on 10/12/2007, -4/+112I wish April Fools Day was ***** Over. I want to get back to reading the news without having to doubt it....
- knowall, on 10/12/2007, -4/+38Creation Date: April 1, 2007
- fuzzmeister, on 10/12/2007, -3/+36Hear that? That's the sound of someone getting fired.
- ajgv, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32wtf are you talking about? what does that have to do with it being real or not?
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30If this is real, then the "GamesEmulator.app" reference seems intriguing... Also, it seems to be running Dashboard, which would imply support for Dashboard widgets.
Since Onyx is sitting where Aqua would typically be on the OSX breakdown, I'm going to guess it's the interface module... - MikeMcG, on 10/12/2007, -6/+26Onyx: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/onyx.html ?
- cying, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Hmm, I downloaded the PDF file, and the author shows Bertrand Serlet, VP of Software R&D.
- Raian, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Steve can't fire Bertrand! He's not only French, but also the object of Steve's iChat AV affection.

Encoding software: Mac OS X 10.4.8 Build 8L2112 Quartz PDFContext
Hmm...I think build 8L2112 was only seeded to developers. If that means anything... - marcuschi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20And you think this is real because...?
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I would assume that the reference to GameEmulator.app would be to provide compatibility with the iPod games that are sold on the iTunes Store. The Pixo stuff is also referring to the OS that runs on the iPod.
- tadunne, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16if it is a fake it's a well thought out one, Theres been alot of talk about Apple using LLVM as a way of running mac os x on different cpu architectures (like the ARM processor)
- signal15, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14@MikeMcG
The Onyx you linked to is a 3rd party app that's been around forever. There's no way that's what this document talks about. According to the document, Onyx is at the same layer as some other graphics stuff, so I would assume that Onyx is the engine that drives the multi-touch display and any resolution independent stuff.
That is, if this is a legitimate doc. - sauved, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Yeah, if it is real, Onyx probably describes that new black, reflective interface module that we all know from coverflow. The implication - of course - is that Leopard will ditch aqua and make extensive use of the 'Onyx' aesthetic.
- kinghuang, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Actually, the creation date's September 1, 2006, and on a non-public build of Mac OS X 10.4.8 (8L2112). Looks real to me.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11iChat buddies 4ever!

The colour is "You're in *****-stain Brown"
I also like how it brings out the bionic half of his face-- especially the titanium eye. - Robotsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"I wish April Fools Day was ***** Over. I want to get back to reading the news without having to doubt it...."
With half the websites out there, I pretty much doubt it anyway..April fools day or not. - SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@ schoate09
... and also Intel no longer own XScale, it was sold off to Marvell Technology (XScale dons spandex and a face mask?!) during the big Intel restructuring last year for around 600 million US (a frickin' snip, compared to some Web 2.0 crap that sells for 6x as much, if you ask me!).
The ARM market is fairly fiercely contested between several manufacturers, I dare say Apple will just pick the best chip for the job. - kilometer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Looks like it's an older document. Notice the use of "Apple Computer, Inc." (not "Apple, Inc.").
- unloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The last edit date of it is 9/01/06
- doctabu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@ kilometer
That guy looks like (a) two-face. If you cover up one half of his face with your hand, he looks like a completely different person. - crazybrit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Onyx sounds like something Apple would name their GUI.
- crazybrit, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I think he means this lets you see it in more detail, so you can decide whether it's real or not for yourself!
Either way, stupid. - Cougarcat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Aloha.app must be the name for the Calling app. But why is there a Finder.app?? Perhaps it's just the app that displays all of your apps on the Home screen?
- kilometer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6http://www.apple.com/pr/photos/execs/serletphotos.html
I'm liking the background color. And the eyebrows. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"But why is there a Finder.app?? "
Finder.app performs the exact same function as Explorer.exe on a Windows machine (or [K/G]DM on a Linux box running a modern desktop): it's the GUI Shell program. You can literally rename any application Finder.app and have it load on boot in Mac OS X, so it's appropriate that no matter what Apple device running Mac OS X you're on, you're going to find a Finder.app. - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I saw on Engadget a while back about a touch screen device called Onyx and was rumored to be used by Apple for the 6 iPod, I don't know if this is the same Onyx but look it up on Engadget, saw it a year ago.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6...here it says "Created: Fri 01 Sep 2006 10:18:15 AM EDT"
- lukee, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7"Steve can't fire Bertrand! He's not only French, but also the object of Steve's iChat AV affection."
But wait... I thought Phil and Steve were BFFs?
"Sorry Phil, there's another guy on my contact list... he's French, and his Vista comparison at WWDC won my heart."
"*sniff* ...you only wanted me for my MacBook's iTunes library!" - boicraig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3He is Serlet of Borg. Resistance is futile.
- daeken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Layerkit == CoreAnimation
- cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@schaote09
Dont look now, but Xscale is arm-based. Just pointing that out. - eleven, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Cellular radio - not AM FM.
- thejackamo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3build 8L2112 was released around the beginning of september 2006, so if the document details are legit, it puts it around the same time.
if not, then too much work went into something that has such minimal impact. a release date or special features would seem more weighty and have more 'april fools' appeal. - Vipersfate, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I completely agree with you. I'm usually on Digg alot more...arg! gonna go nuts...
- Applemacmad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So much for 'illuminous' then I guess
- tadunne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Apple branding always has meaning about what the product or technology does. Wikipeda had this to day about onyx:
"Onyx is a banded variety of chalcedony, a cryptocrystalline form of quartz. " So maybe it's something related to apples quartz graphics? a special api for mobile apps? - neckaros, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What's that? Photos.app? Notes.app? never seen in desktop OSX indeed.
They reference to LayerKit, wichi is the old "codename" of CoreAnimation.
It seems genuine to me but...
"Radio" on the iPhone?
I'm curious to know what Onyx is. It is not the multi-touch operator neither the resolution independance operator like i read.
Why a GameEmulator? - championchap, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3GamesEmulator.app?
Not sure i believe this at all. - SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Didn't Steve mention Onyx during the MWSF demo? I'm sure he did...
- MitchCumstein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The "radio" is the hardware used to communicate with cellular and wifi networks.
- corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, at least now we can be sure it's an ARM processor, not some sort of an Intel variation.
- anonym41414, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Onyx is the iPhone version of Quartz and Aqua. It handles on-screen controls and drawing.
- Ruhtar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Oh wow, I think I'll just run right out and build me one of these from this oh so detailed document.
Simply viewing any one of the numerous videos about the iPhone available from various sites would show the features of the iPhone and knowing much of anything about Apple's architectural engineering style could easily give one a much more detailed idea of what the iPhone's architecture will more than likely be like.
Beyond that, assuming the document is genuine, were it of any importance it would have a confidentially notice indelibly bound to it. - plagiats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1geminitojanus : didn't you mean nautilus/konqueror ?
- kilometer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@doctabu
Haha, I know. Check out the line down his forehead where the two pieces of his head were joined. - andrewlevy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1maybe we'll see another trademark dispute with SGI over Onyx?
...or not - Born4Surf, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Wonder which of the big vending machine manufacturers will do iphone Vending Machines like they now do with iPods.
Maybe Klix Vending Machines? http://www.klix.com -
