- dinkola, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11This is what I see happening ... Apple needs to keep AT&T happy and everyone locked into using AT&T. Especially with Apple looking for carriers around the world, since it would make it harder for then if it was announced that users could change it to use any carrier. Apple knows these unlocking projects are going on, and Im sure they are monitoring them. We can also speculate that Apple may have some great future updates, which mean people having to update their phone. So if I where them, I would be holding onto these updates in an attempt to fight back at any iPhone hacks. As soon as someone hacks the iPhone, patch it and release an update with a new feature. Most people will want that new feature, forcing them to update and the hack will become useless again. Its pretty much what Sony/Microsoft did with their consoles.
- ffleming, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7IIRC, Verizon is CDMA and AT&T is GSM, so it's pretty unlikely.
- mattmcm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Advice to parents that are oh-so-desperate to gain access to their children's E-mail accounts: Install a keylogger instead of trusting a group that uses "u" instead of "you".
Hey Rayahari, hack my account please. *****.you@yahoo.co.uk - djh816, on 10/10/2007, -7/+14Why do people feel the need to tell us why they (or even that they) bury something? Just do it and move on already.
- drcreek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Just in time for the Europe release.... whenever that is.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6The best hacking group on the net wouldn't advertise on Digg and wouldn't charge $100 for hacking anything.
Idiots. - geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6If you own a Moko Phone (like I do), you'd /laugh/ at the level of incompleteness. While it's a cool toy to hack on, the software is barely in what I'd call an Alpha stage; virtually no component is feature complete, there's no real API documentation (like Maemo provides for their Hildon UI) except "learn GTK+" so prospective developers are out in the cold, and all of the mailing lists are eternally focused on "You know what would be a really neat feature!?", when the dialer alone could still use some work.
The iPhone's working, it's shipping, it's feature complete to Apple's specs (even if it's missing a bazillion features everyone else thinks it should have, even though they still probably wouldn't buy it anyways) and it's a pretty solid phone. At the very least you know if you need to dial a number, it will work. - jmacdonagh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It's "too" not "to" for both of your uses. I hate to be a spelling nazi, but that's always bugged me.
- jmacdonagh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Unless you change the radio chip in your iPhone you will *never* be able to use it on Verizon. It's a completely different technology.
- asaturn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5OSx86 anyone? Apple probably knows and obviously isn't doing much to stop it... they like the underground attraction, it creates buzz. To them, 100 geeks hacking their iPhones to work on T-Mobile means nothing to them except that 100 geeks love their expensive products enough to risk having a useless piece of $600 electronics in a pretty box.
- geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4There's no cryptology at work here at all, so no, it's not. Besides, the DMCA has a very clear and specific policy on reverse engineering for phone unlocking, detailing that it _is_ legal to do so, which you would know if you actually read said document's exemptions, read digg (http://digg.com/tech_news/Cell_phone_unlocking_legal_for_three_years ), or any other news source reporting on this (http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20061124-8280.html ).
- santz, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8Keep it up! your work in unlocking the iphone is appreciated by many here!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5It's easier to move on with the sense of closure that comes with confessing what you did and why.
It's like taking a hearty ***** on a bad post and then wiping up and going on with your day. - Tobark, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6If it can work with Verizon Ill be buying the two I returned. ATnT SUCKED in my area.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5But what we're dying to know is, why?
- OHiggins, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5in all areas*
- knugen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Meh, as if a parent reading digg really belonged in the "omg my kid is using hotmail to get porn and I need to spy on him"-group
- betterth, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Had a Helio Ocean. I can honestly say it's the worst phone I've ever used. Bulky, locked down, and very ackward to use, the controls were totally retarded. The GPS was crappy at best, and the screen hard to read in the best conditions.
I've never disliked a phone as much as that Ocean, and I got rid of it two weeks after getting it, switching to a T-Mobile Wing for two weeks (Don't go there either, the reception/signal on those phones is abymissal and they know it) before finally getting the iPhone.
The Ocean doesn't compare in any way -- period. - bangmalley, on 08/30/2008, -0/+1buried for calling iphone as jesusphone
- anarchyx34, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Itunes.
- monkzero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1seriously? damn... well yes i do agree with the wing. i have the dash at the moment, soon switching to another phone and carrier. the dash is slow and i have terrible reception and often use the phrase "say that again plz" well thanks for the input.
- macslut, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I agree the ability to hack the iPhone on an individual level is a good thing for Apple and doesn't really affect AT&T...if anything it builds overall demand by the small number of geeks doing it. However, while T-Mobile won't hack and sell an iPhone, individually franchised T-Mobile/Sprint/Verizon shops just might. That could be awkward.
- cawpin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If you aren't on their network anymore, how exactly are they going to push an update to you? As to your second question, yes, I believe they do.
- Murdats, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"banned sites"
banned by who? how can a site be banned? except by whoever is providing your internet (read school, work, crappy ISP's) - CarlHaynes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1In Europe and Australia the I phone is available to consumers as either locked to a network or just for purchase unlocked, with the unlocked version being quite a bit more expensive if a person from America wanted an unlocked phone which could use updates all they need would to be to purchase one that is unlocked by default from outside the USA
- robwilkens, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What do you mean "Edge whch is just AT&T" ? -- T-Mobile also offers Edge.
- alamandrax, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4nope the guy who made up the name needs to make like jesus and die. the iphone still rocks (waiting for everyone to enthusiastically digg me up - i just complimented the iphone - it is only logical).
- rompom7, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3I agree, what a stupid name... It's not even catchy, clever or funny... It's just plain dumb.
- cypherz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I don't know if taking them apart is the *best* thing to do, but the video was interesting.
- Drizzit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I thought that European cellular companies could not lock phones to their network. How did Apple manage to get around this?
- twenty3inhouse, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Wouldn't it be funny if the phone melted when you opened the case - voiding the warranty of course. That would make hacking it much harder.
- mattfugitive, on 10/10/2007, -19/+20Not another iPhone Article
- specv, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0yea lock all all the AT&T features you want but when your on tmobile there is nothing than can do to you. What could happen is signing a contract when you buy the phone
- betterth, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1EDGE is a GSM-carrier function, and EV-DO is not true 3G, not like Cingular's 3G (HSPDA) network. They may get the phone to become unlocked, meaning GSM carriers can stick their sim in and use the phone on AT&T and T-Mobile, but I seriously doubt their going to find a way to use a phone on Verizon or Sprint's
Even when they unlock, you won't get visual voicemail, and some of the other features may not work right either. As Verizon/Sprint don't offer EDGE, you'll never have the internet on those networks.
And there's absolutely no indication whatsoever that the European version will be any different at all. Not even a leak or rumor to suggest that. - insomniac8400, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1What is the point in this? An iphone update can easily undo anything these guys accomplish and you could be locked out of services if you don't upgrade. But despite that don't carries have to by law offer to unlock a phone if asked?
- kelly, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2And rise again
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1im just waiting for them to act like ms and ban you from useing the phone at all if you hack it, that will be the day i drop apple products if they do.
- praveenmarkandu, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Dugg for the StarWars EpisodeVI Picture
- seneyr, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Isn't this just a DMCA violation waiting to happen?
- BadAsh71, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0Don't forget though that if and when the iPhone is unlocked so that you can use it on other carriers such as Verizon you will NOT be able to take advantage of any 3G Network, only Edge which is just AT&T. However, it may be possible to hack the European version which should be 3G to work with Verizon or Sprint's EDVO here in the states. But, to import an iPhone from Europe will most likely cost you more than the $600 US version so expect to pay well over $700.
Another thing to remember is that iPhone updates are only available via iTunes and will most likely kill all hacks to the syste so you will need to wait for hacked versions of every system and security update.
Just a little food for thought. - TheAcidQueen, on 10/10/2007, -6/+4and I just cancelled out your bury, making it useless. unlucky.
- Nicksname1, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2Im tired of them to I don't even know why I clicked on this. But I guess you did to since your comments are on here.
- shorty9, on 10/10/2007, -10/+6Best thing to do with the iPhone is take it apart
http://www.hooqs.com/taking-apart-the-iphone/17021,20369 - monkzero, on 10/10/2007, -9/+4Soon I can scratch off one of the many reasons NOT to buy an iPhone. Go Helio OCEAN!
Countdown to possible patch? - leexy, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2I really don't get the hype. With the Neo 1973 already shipping and the more powerful wifi-capable upgrade weeks away, any geek worth his salt is surely little concerned by a 600 bucks phone that comes in with a 2-year contrat.
- Adrianc333, on 10/10/2007, -11/+5djh816, i just buried your comment.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -9/+2fake
- insomniac8400, on 10/10/2007, -11/+4jesusPhone? That phone needs to make like Jesus and die.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -22/+4Buried as lame. Let us know when there are results, not harbingers of possible opportunities to obtain results.
