theiphoneproject.org — As of tomorrow, Sunday, March 30 ′th, the long awaited project iPhone PWNED will be available to the public! - it’s what we’ve seen on YouTube and many of us have disbelieved. However, it is real and allows for custom unsigned firmware to be flashed on to the iPhone.

What is going to happen, and mark my words here, is that some wingnut is going to let loose with a hidden program within a program to do some pretty dirty things - send the contents of your contact list, screw up your calendar, burn up your battery, shut down your phone, intercept your SMS messages, screw up your WiFi but most of all, the guy who really wants his name in lights will shut down the whole iPhone network. It will be all over the news and he'll crow with pride and satisfaction leaving the rest of us mad, pissed and angry. "Oh no, it won't happen" is stupidity speaking because it WILL happen thanks to the "Dev Team". And when it does happen? Point your finger right back to the "Dev Team" for it was that group that opened the door.

      There is no iPhone network. There is the AT&T network, and other networks that unlocked iPhones are used on.

      I think you are going overboard. If someone created a malicious payload, only a tiny fraction of iPhone owners would install it because it would be unlikely to make it onto a trusted download source and if it did it would be quickly removed.

      Still,

      "send the contents of your contact list" - Not a big deal to me. They are in the white pages anyway.
      "screw up your calendar" - Restore to known good firmware and re-sync.
      "burn up your battery" - How exactly? Unpossible.
      "shut down your phone" - Restore to known good firmware and re-sync.
      "intercept your SMS messages" - Nobody cares about my unimportant messages to my wife.
      "screw up your WiFi" - Restore to known good firmware and re-sync.

      The kind of issues you are talking about can happen with any open, exploitable OS. Windows, Linux, OS X.

    "The expected release of the Mac OS X version of “PwnageTool” has been delayed until sometime next week.

    Also, initial feedback from Beta testers has indicated that a few small changes and additional features should be developed.

    Another major request from the Beta testers and demo viewers is that the team brings forward the release of the Windows version, with the feedback that has been received the team has decided to expedite the release of the Windows tool for a dual platform release sometime next week, iPod touch support will also be finalized.

    The DevTeam would like to thank the users for being patient and waiting for the upcoming release.

    The video presentation that was released yesterday has been viewed over 100,000 times in 24 hours proving the overwhelming demand for the application.

    To summarize :-
    - Pwnage Tool Application releases _sometime_ in the next week for Mac OS X 10.4.x, 10.5.x and Windows.
    - The tool contains revised logos and icons.
    - PwnageTool does NOT ship with any Apple licensed software, Intellectual Property, trademarks, logos or images.
    - As my Mother would say “If you are going to be late, arrive with flowers”."

      It baffles me how much people post the same digg comments over and over. It makes it impossible to get your unique say in because it's going to be lost in a sea of the same few comments repeated over and over.

      I mean...I know i'm buying 5 pieces to unlock and resale them, but the counterperson has no right to assume that i will really unlock them. Hell I can have 5 hot girlfriends who must have an iphone or they won't sleep with me. and since i'm filthy rich, i have to get them the phones as well as 5 atandt connections. either assumption can be false or true and it's better and polite for the counterperson to not assume anything at all. after all, i can read simple english written in fine print on the back of the receipt right? so why they ***** does the salesperson need to tell me what will be voided if i unlock their *****?

        working out how someone else implemented a huge complex system is usually harder than working out how to do it yourself

      That seems to be the best tool to use currently for Mac and Windows jailbreaks but I will definitely give IPWNED a try when it's released.
