iPhone PWNED
theiphoneproject.org — As of tomorrow, Sunday, March 30 ′th, the long awaited project iPhone PWNED will be available to the public! - it’s what we’ve seen on YouTube and many of us have disbelieved. However, it is real and allows for custom unsigned firmware to be flashed on to the iPhone.

- jeriqo, on 03/31/2008, -8/+1Are you really going to put windows on your iPhone?
Man, a $2 phone will do the job.- CharlesSaint, on 03/31/2008, -0/+4It's comments like this that make you remember back when digg was a place where the only time you'd see comments this stupid was if they were sarcastic. Sadly, sarcasm is not present.

- MWeather, on 03/31/2008, -2/+1What's stupid about it? Windows Mobile blows.
- CharlesSaint, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1Here we go again...
DRJones' comment above was referring to the iPhone PWNED software (currently Mac exclusive), not the iPhone's OS. Not Windows Mobile; not Windows. Had you read the article, you might have seen that. As it stands, your comment merely serves to strengthen the point I made above.

- yawnstretch, on 03/31/2008, -10/+29I hope people get really creative with this (I don't mean hunting down community modders) and we see some totally different UIs and apps for the incredible iphone.

- serif69, on 03/31/2008, -3/+27If you want a totally different UI for the iPhone, then you are missing the entire point of the iPhone.
- SlpingInsomniac, on 03/31/2008, -2/+11If it isn't broken, don't fix it?
- colincornaby, on 03/31/2008, -5/+2Why? A completely different UI would break all 3rd party apps, whether they were built with the official SDK or unofficial SDK. I guess if you want a completely different UI with no apps... that's fine...
- TheOS2Guy, on 03/31/2008, -44/+6What do you mean, you hope people won't get really creative with it? What is going to happen, and mark my words here, is that some wingnut is going to let loose with a hidden program within a program to do some pretty dirty things - send the contents of your contact list, screw up your calendar, burn up your battery, shut down your phone, intercept your SMS messages, screw up your WiFi but most of all, the guy who really wants his name in lights will shut down the whole iPhone network. It will be all over the news and he'll crow with pride and satisfaction leaving the rest of us mad, pissed and angry. "Oh no, it won't happen" is stupidity speaking because it WILL happen thanks to the "Dev Team". And when it does happen? Point your finger right back to the "Dev Team" for it was that group that opened the door.
- DaffyDuck, on 03/31/2008, -6/+33"the whole iPhone network"
There is no iPhone network. There is the AT&T network, and other networks that unlocked iPhones are used on.
I think you are going overboard. If someone created a malicious payload, only a tiny fraction of iPhone owners would install it because it would be unlikely to make it onto a trusted download source and if it did it would be quickly removed.
Still,
"send the contents of your contact list" - Not a big deal to me. They are in the white pages anyway.
"screw up your calendar" - Restore to known good firmware and re-sync.
"burn up your battery" - How exactly? Unpossible.
"shut down your phone" - Restore to known good firmware and re-sync.
"intercept your SMS messages" - Nobody cares about my unimportant messages to my wife.
"screw up your WiFi" - Restore to known good firmware and re-sync.
The kind of issues you are talking about can happen with any open, exploitable OS. Windows, Linux, OS X.- marx2k, on 03/31/2008, -11/+1Windows isn't open.
- DaffyDuck, on 03/31/2008, -2/+16OK, let me rephrase. Any OS open for installation of 3rd party software.

"The expected release of the Mac OS X version of “PwnageTool” has been delayed until sometime next week.
Legal enquiries were made to the DevTeam about the validity and legality of the contents of the tools, we would like to stress that no third-party copyrighted software will ever be released by the DevTeam.
Also, initial feedback from Beta testers has indicated that a few small changes and additional features should be developed.
Another major request from the Beta testers and demo viewers is that the team brings forward the release of the Windows version, with the feedback that has been received the team has decided to expedite the release of the Windows tool for a dual platform release sometime next week, iPod touch support will also be finalized.
The DevTeam would like to thank the users for being patient and waiting for the upcoming release.
The video presentation that was released yesterday has been viewed over 100,000 times in 24 hours proving the overwhelming demand for the application.
To summarize :-
- Pwnage Tool Application releases _sometime_ in the next week for Mac OS X 10.4.x, 10.5.x and Windows.
- The tool contains revised logos and icons.
- PwnageTool does NOT ship with any Apple licensed software, Intellectual Property, trademarks, logos or images.
- As my Mother would say “If you are going to be late, arrive with flowers”."
http://iphone-dev.org/news:pwnage_delay- starkruzr, on 03/31/2008, -0/+4Why are they releasing this now, before the actual release of the software? This will give Apple a chance to adjust the 2.0 release to counter the "PWNing" before it comes out.
- dagamer34, on 03/31/2008, -0/+4Project PWNED depends on a flaw in the bootloader, which Apple will NEVER user upgrade. Perhaps they'll make a new bootloader that will cover up this flaw, but all current phones will be able to use it still.
- jonnyeh, on 03/31/2008, -1/+4In other words... too late for Apple!

- wacomwacoff, on 03/31/2008, -4/+1So let's say I pwn my phone. Sure, i can install apps and such -- but I've made my warranty invalid, and I don't have a calling plan. How do I use it as a phone without AT&T? I'm a dummy, explain it to me.
- kromem, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1T-mobile, or AT&T but w/o the iPhone pricing plan. Just toss in any GSM SIM card.
- colincornaby, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1It's not like the iPhone pricing plan is that much. As a former Verizon customer, I can vouch that it's half the price a month for the same features.
- Ozzeh, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1It's the lack of unlimited text messages that made me ziphone activate my AT&T iPhone. I pay about $35 per month for my line with unlimited data + texts. (smartphone plan from my treo 750)
- wacomwacoff, on 03/31/2008, -0/+0But since my AT&T plan has unlimited data isn't it better than T-Mobile or Verizon anyway?

It baffles me how much people post the same digg comments over and over. It makes it impossible to get your unique say in because it's going to be lost in a sea of the same few comments repeated over and over.
- MadFlava, on 03/31/2008, -6/+1Buried for delayed... not a big surprise coming from the dev team.
- 10GunSalute, on 03/31/2008, -2/+3This is like, what, the fourth time the iPhone's been jailbroken? Apple just can't get it right, can they?
- Atomic1fire, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1This is not technically a jail break its more of a jailbreak maintainer
- supermanred, on 03/31/2008, -1/+3I don't think they care any more. The App Store and version 2.0 of the firmware are almost here and they will soon have thousands of app developers working on new iPhone apps.
- BlackMask, on 03/31/2008, -4/+2I bet apple have given up long time ago. and nowadays this is what happens when you go to an apple store and want to buy phones. first you pull out your credit card and id and demand to buy 5 pieces. they say, "if you unlock the phones, your warranty will be voided and after these 5 pieces you would no longer be able to buy phones". they say these stuff quickly and rudely that if i was the buyer, i would have asked to talk to the manager and file an official complain about how i'm being spoken to while buying the phones.
I mean...I know i'm buying 5 pieces to unlock and resale them, but the counterperson has no right to assume that i will really unlock them. Hell I can have 5 hot girlfriends who must have an iphone or they won't sleep with me. and since i'm filthy rich, i have to get them the phones as well as 5 atandt connections. either assumption can be false or true and it's better and polite for the counterperson to not assume anything at all. after all, i can read simple english written in fine print on the back of the receipt right? so why they ***** does the salesperson need to tell me what will be voided if i unlock their *****?- dienaked, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2Did you miss all the stories about people crying how Apple wouldn't help them once they screwed their phones up? - starkruzr, on 03/31/2008, -2/+5That's right, they can't get it right. That's why we have to jailbreak.
- sonicbliss, on 03/31/2008, -1/+3'They cant get it right' is bit short-sighted dont you think? They have got x million people (including yourself?) to shell out $400+ per unit. Does apple make profits off iphone sales alone?
Gotta be doing something right!

People still 'jailbreak' peoples houses. I guess Schlage and Master Lock just can't get it right.
People still 'jailbreak' peoples cars. I guess Ford, Dodge, BMW, Mercedes, Chevy, Lexus, Infiniti etc, just can't get it right.
Houses still burn. I guess UL underwriters and the Fire Prevention Council just can't get it right.
- BlackMask, on 03/31/2008, -1/+3i was banned from these developers' official chat room for talking about and supporting ziphone and didn't care to get my nick unbanned, but now that they are hopefully coming up with PWNED, I bet it's about time I beg one of the admins to take me back! either way, both zibri and the dev team kick ass when it comes to doing crazy ***** with iphone. :-D
- DaffyDuck, on 03/31/2008, -1/+3The problem with Zibri's method is that it is currently not fully reversible and if you need to get your iPhone serviced by Apple you are out of luck. They are going to know you jailbroke it and will likely deny warranty service.

- busta, on 03/31/2008, -4/+8Could do without all the pwnage and leet speak... really makes them sound like a bunch of kiddies playing on the "internets". I haven't talked like that since I was 15...
- Chordinator, on 03/31/2008, -4/+1They're in ***** Soviet Russia. need I say more?
- KayinAngel, on 03/31/2008, -6/+1shouldn't it be called "iPhPwned" ?
- sonicularulus, on 03/31/2008, -1/+1no.
iPhone Pwned is better. I think iPwned or iPhwned would be best...
- sonicularulus, on 03/31/2008, -1/+1no.
- Frozenfuryblade, on 03/31/2008, -3/+2Seriously, why haven't these guys been hired? Apple needs to take a look into hiring these guys.
- apache2, on 03/31/2008, -1/+5Pretty sure they could do it themselves much better than we just saw, but considering it is against company policy, they don't.
- godofpumpkins, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2well, duh, they designed the system, have the manuals, the source code, the trade secrets, and don't have to worry about losing $400 when experimenting in case they lose their phones. I would be a lot less impressed with apple (technically, at least – for a corporation I'd be impressed with their policy) if they allowed something like this on their devices by default.
working out how someone else implemented a huge complex system is usually harder than working out how to do it yourself

- jcani, on 03/31/2008, -3/+2I don't own an iPhone, but my uncle does. He gets a new phone every few months. /sigh
I thought it was cool hack regardless of it being for the iPhone. - scarz99, on 03/31/2008, -5/+1They need to make a Windows version.

- wacomwacoff, on 03/31/2008, -3/+2Agreed --- the iPhone App Store is coming in a few months anyway; why risk bricking a $400 phone?
- pond70, on 03/31/2008, -1/+2well it's almost time to get a iphone ..looks like most those pesky Apple Inc "bugs" are getting slowly squashed -
- MrViklund, on 03/31/2008, -7/+1iPhone can't cant be pwned. This article talks bad about Apple therefore stinks and will be buried.
- johanrocks, on 03/31/2008, -3/+1Dugg for the pwnage and awesome music (I love Sandstorm).
- sonicularulus, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2with an expected June release on iPhone 2.0 and native apps for the iPhone, I am seriously considering on trying this out and finally jailbreaking my phone...
- m1zl3d, on 03/31/2008, -2/+2It's definitely worth it. I've been jail breaking mine since 1.1.1 firmware. I'm not sure how I used the phone WITHOUT it being jail broken. There are so many useful Apps that make the phone so much better.

That seems to be the best tool to use currently for Mac and Windows jailbreaks but I will definitely give IPWNED a try when it's released.- DaffyDuck, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2No, use iLiberty instead of Ziphone. It's a safer option for the time being.

- zetsurin, on 03/31/2008, -1/+3True, but they could call it 'Rectal Exam' for all I care as long as it provides me with a great way to hack my iPhone.
- ImprovingLemon, on 03/31/2008, -0/+3Delayed
- wipis, on 03/31/2008, -4/+2pretty sweet. But I think I'll keep my $50 razer

- hifiDesign, on 03/31/2008, -0/+3That can't spell "RAZR" right... The correct, full word is "razor". Anywho...
