- GoodBrain, on 10/11/2007, -4/+25I just have to say, I'm really amazed by the progress this team has been making!
- dmbchris, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17I predict Apple will be slow to respond or will leave the hackers alone altogether. They didn't stop people from hacking the ipod. The only hacks they seem to fix are:
1. OS security holes (obviously)
2. Hacks they are contractually obligated to fix (i.e. iTunes DRM)
Yes, they won't support any problems you have with your phone after you hack it, but we've seen with the Apple TV and iPod that hacks adding functionality are ignored and implicitly encouraged (by not denouncing them- any company that really didn't like this would speak out or close the holes). Does anyone really think that the Apple TV root password was so simple because of a mistake? Remember they are first and foremost a hardware company, and that is where they make their money. If a 3rd party hacks in and creates another reason to buy the phone, they are secretly pleased.
The vast majority of their users enjoy the secure embrace of Apple-only programs, even with their limitations. The presence of these hacks actually helps them to serve both kinds of consumers- those who tinker and those who don't. - trouble916, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16In case the site goes down again... this is a direct copy/paste from their site:

That DMG file contains all source and an intel-compatible executable file. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15believe it or not, digg is not just a contest to get content to the front page. digg is a social bookmarking tool. people digg stories and check them out later. the most popular stories move to the front. deal with it.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10you are a social bookmarking tool
- greensauce, on 10/11/2007, -7/+14how is this getting dugg when site is down? I never understand that.
- norbiu, on 10/11/2007, -2/+92 comments in 2 seconds. You are an *idiot*.
- GoodBrain, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Server is back up, but Pair seems to be blocking my site or something. In addition to the links trouble916 posted (thanks, trouble), here is some more info:
We have successfully written a tool named iPhoneInterface allowing for some basic manipulation of things on the phone, and are releasing it tonight. We are including source code so you can understand the techniques we have used so far. We will be expanding the functionality of this tool significantly tomorrow. The best news is that we have prototype code that allows the ability to:
* Run any desired application already residing on the phone.
* Control what processes run on the phone (currently implementation is very hackish)
* Move files around on the phone
* Enable viewing of verbose information during the restore process
* Activate the phone without iTunes and without a token
Note: Not all of the features listed above are necessarily included in tonight’s initial release.
We are continuing significant work on this tool and will probably have similarly worthwhile updates tomorrow. - ncaauwe, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8I just want this thing hacked to work on any network since I haven't been so lucky as to be graced by the sprinkles of AT&T's so-called "more coverage in more places." Think how many more phones Apple would sell if they don't kill these hacks with their updates. Sure they'll piss of AT&T, but what are they going to do? Tear up their contract with Apple and say good-bye to those half-million+ new customers as every other cell carrier gladly takes the reigns of this obviously popular device?
- palatka, on 10/11/2007, -7/+12because eveyone that owns an iphone is a mac fanboy, am i rite?
- rabidsnail, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5And the site's down. This is actually surprising since their database is hosted by pair (or so says the error), which has loads of resources.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Be nice. I've noticed a lot of double comments lately and it's Digg's fault.
- Amplix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4No no no NO!...
Diggs does not equal page views.... GAH! - BeeWolf, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5They'll sell approximately six more units, to nerds on Slashdot. BFD. Besides, some of the phone's features aren't going to work if you put it on another network. And I don't believe any of the carriers in the US are better than any other carriers. They all suck.
- MacParrot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Well, since Macs can Windows for those that want to, maybe you can tell us what a PC can do that a Mac can't? Or are you just talking out yer bottom cheeks?
Here's something a Mac can do that a PC can't without major hacking...run OS X - Angmar, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5The Wiki itself.
- ferrija1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Down already? And of course no mirrors...
- ScottoGato, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3OMFG. You linked to the wiki. You wiki linker!
- digasaur, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6your ignorance is showing
- akusuma, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3apple probably likes these hacks because it allows them to have their cake and eat it two: they get a deal with AT&T, but at the same time, their product can be reach a bigger market because these hackers are allowing the iphone to be used without paying for the AT&T service.
- paulmike3, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Can who be? The blog spam? O NOES!!1!
- cactus476, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3And the site's down....
- meatmcguffin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2All desktops come with a mouse with a right click button. All laptops come with a trackpad that right clicks if you put two fingers on it. Moron.
iPhone != desktop by the way and Mac OS X is rock solid. A lot of people think that the the OS X on the AppleTV and the iPhone were easy to crack on purpose just to find fans in the hacker market. I mean the AppleTV' and iPhone passwords were suspiciously easy to crack and the data on both wasn't encrypted in any way. - bansai, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2could you please stop spamming the site here.. you either love it or you own it.. but please stop it.. you have been going around iphone topics and putting it in..
- InferiorWang, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's still getting diggs, sight unseen.
(or is that site unseen?) - zephc, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Bookmarking, fool.
- therunnersays, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Haha...I love how you used your Oregon State FTP to host that file as well. Good luck explaining all the bandwidth usage...lol.
- BeeWolf, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Plus the AT&T rates aren't that bad compared to Verizon, who I left behind on Friday.
- ncaauwe, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Yeah, I know mainly that we wouldn't have Visual Voicemail, but I hardly use my voicemail. If my friends and I miss each other, we just send a text instead. It's true that all carriers suck. Just gotta find the lesser of the evils with coverage in your area.
- paulmike3, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Don't submit crappy blog spam on crappy servers to digg, and we won't have to resort to googling "The iPhone Dev Wiki" and posting links.
- johnpaul191, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2obviously people have problems with different carriers due to billing or things like that. the quality of US carriers seem to be really dependent on where you live. i think we can pretty fairly say that. i have driven around most of the US east of the Mississippi river in vans with bands. between the people we have a few carriers (AT&T, Verizon etc) and in my experience coverage really seems to be a regional thing. i didn't notice any one network blowing the others away, so it depends on where you spend most of your time.
all that being said, Verizon, for example, does not use sim cards.... and they use CDMA, not GSM, so what could i really do with a cracked iPhone. i would still be pretty limited in terms of carriers. i am more interested in seeing what other things people can hack out of it. - superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm not really sure why people are modding down the point that device hacking is inevitable. Do you disagree? Speak up if so.
I mean, who wasn't expecting the iPhone to be hacked? - paulmike3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1BADBRAIN!
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I have to say that AT&T reception where I live is actually much better than any of the other carriers I have tried. Reception does vary from area to area, but it's worked well for me...
- GoodBrain, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Something is really wrong. I can't even go in through their control panel to start tweaking things so I can at least try and get the site running statically
- Gee1004, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Why do you waste your time and comment then?
- meatmcguffin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1That's some wit you have there.
- interval, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's called Profile -> Manage Topics -> uncheck Apple
- johnpaul191, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1unless they have some deal with AT&T to block hacks that interrupt AT&T's revenue stream. i wonder if Apple makes any money off of the monthly service? i would assume Apple's money is a one shot deal when you buy the iPhone, unless you then buy media from iTMS. much like the rest of the iPod family, as opposed to Macs where you will be buying OS upgrades and other software.
- getouttamyfog, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Why are people botching about articles being dugg? Shut up hoe!
- bocaJWho, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1While I'll admit the possibility, I doubt it.
AT&T likely required in their contract with Apple that apple quickly correct any hack in their product which allows users to use the iPhone outside their network or lose any profit sharing from iPhone customers. This would be parallel to the contract with the record companies which required that Apple patch any hacks in it's Fairplay DRM within 2 weeks or lose the rights to sell their music. - zabouth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1apple fan boys you mean mac is the name of a product not the name of the company its like calling microsoft fanboys zune fanyboys
- Speed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1And where is the original story, then?
- albiniak, on 10/11/2007, -9/+10no no no. you don't get to be machine status until you release a universal binary....
- seattle98104, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3IM IN YUR DIGGZ LINKING TO YUR WIKIZ
- PasteEater, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Ditto. But I must say that Verizon's coverage was miles ahead of AT&T. I get good reception at home, but it gets flakier out and about in the city (San Francisco and Detroit).
- GoodBrain, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It should be working now. I'm having to shut access off so I can tweak things so they don't shut me down all together.
- darkyoshi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Is that a debranded dell?

What is Digg?
