- PakoBedejo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+71Congratulations iPhone owners! SNES Emulators for all!
Now....where'd I put those damned buttons?... - mt066, on 10/11/2007, -5/+51Now you can put a picture of The Arcade Fire as your background so that all of your friends at the organic grocery store will be impressed.
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/11/2007, -7/+43you don't have to be an elite hacker to customize your wallpaper. try this .. go to settings ..
- dzorz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+33ssh? ssh would be a nice feature.
- bradwilki, on 10/11/2007, -4/+32Damn you got there first
This is kinda cool, but let there be something good to come of it. I want my custom ringtones if I bought a $600 phone, I want customizable icons and wallpapers. - ki1022, on 10/11/2007, -5/+32'ed
- mehan, on 10/11/2007, -12/+37..isn't it supposed to "just work?"
- jakdracula, on 10/11/2007, -1/+23ring tones, flash on the iPhone and the ability to 'save as...' onto the iPhone is necessary.
- evilregis, on 10/11/2007, -7/+28im in ur iph0nz ch0wnin ur filesystemz
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20Yes, but your girls are still hotter. I would trade access to the iPhone for access to Brazil's women any day.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+23dont you know. On the internet calling someone gay makes the other person penis smaller and your own penis bigger. Now STFU *****........
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -12/+31more like iSpent600BucksOnThisPhoneAndiTDoesn'tEvenSendTextMessagesToMultipleRecipients.
- jamelt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20Then you probably wouldn't be interested in an iPhone.
- imdandman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17You can't really answer that question unless you have a goal. It's not like you say, "I wanna hack this," and then do it. It's more like you say, "Man, I wish I could do this with this piece of hardware." Then you hack it to achieve your goal
- nonsequitor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15Getting access to the binary is a good start. In this case its a file system, based on a custom embedded version of BSD. A little knowledge of electronics allowed them to attach a serial port to the chip on this thing, that gave them a shell login to get into single user mode. The leaked firmware image gave them the root and mobile usernames and passwords. Once they got inside its just like tweaking any linux/bsd device.
If you want to know more, come see my talk at DefCon: Hardware Hacking for Software Geeks - abandonedhero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14I think he was referring to how fast these guys are - but even a week is incredible.
- SteveMax, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14You can have access to Brazilian women at any time you want. There's an amazing device called "airplane", which can (I kid you not!) transport you even from one country to another! Now THAT's technology, not this "iPhone".
PS: Brazilian women actually do like foreigners, or "new meat". You'll have a head start over any local guy, if you look American, European, etc. - jon61575, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16They had access to the software and phone. Its a little different then someone hacking into OS X with no physical access.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+19ssh... the rabid apple fanboys might hear you.
- Mejogid, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13I love how you capitalise 'FIght', 'Anal Retentive Control Freak' and 'Consumer Control' but not 'steve jobs'.
- Langford, on 10/11/2007, -11/+22Hackers always seem to be on the move. How long until iPhone Linux shows up?
- Adrianc333, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14Where would you even start, when hacking a device?
Does anyone have any info' on this. (Not specifically the iPhone, just any device, i'm intrigued. :) - infobhan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Guess what...no one cares.
- chongli, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Security has nothing to do with restricting an owner from using a product he owns, that's called DRM and DRM is not secure. Thankfully, the iPhone does not use much in the way of DRM to restrict its users from hacking it. The main obstacle right now is in developing an ARM Mach-O toolchain in order to get some code running on the iPhone.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12"By making it do things most people don't care about at the expense of a massive investment of time and labor?"
You are obviously not a geek, now excuse me while I continue working on my 6 foot tall lego Optimus Prime. - zweben, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12That only shows when you're on the phone's "Slide to Unlock" screen. The real main screen, where all the icons are, has a black background that you can't change. I believe that's what they're talking about.
- bradwilki, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11What Zweben said.
I love sarcastic comments from people who don't understand what other people say. - tdowling, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11and copy-and-paste
- noverflow, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12Im not so sure I would consider any system to be safe when you have physical access to it. I mean part of what thy did required them splice the cable and insert a resistor. They didnt just throw a command at it. And even if they had, they just change the UI around. It's not like they downloaded the address book/ pictures from it remotely. (remember the sidekick hack).
- oneunshamed, on 10/11/2007, -10/+19I'm surprised it took a whole week...
- blademonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8.com
- DeadlyBrad42, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8OSX is based off of BSD, isn't it?
- theNthDoctor, on 10/11/2007, -7/+15Muahaha: http://linuxupdate.blogspot.com/2007/07/openmokocom-goes-live.html
It's not an iPhone, but it's similar, 100% open source including the hardware, and it's making good progress. - virtualball, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Let's see you do it then....
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10"Now....where'd I put those damned buttons?..."
Next to the 3G support. - tnoy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8You obviously have no idea what the OpenMoko phone is.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9The reason MS now controls 44% of the PDA Phone software market is because the OS is so Open. i am Amazed at how much you can do with Windows Mobile 6. But MS does need to do something about stability. thats the only thing that i bitch about on windows Mobile 5.
- Sparkster185, on 10/11/2007, -7/+14Knowing Apple, you'll probably have to buy a special Apple manufactured-only accessory that costs $50 to change anything.
- ro0ke, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7That name doesn't seem very marketable.
- thehigherlife, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6from that website: Also PLEASE, PLEASE do not post this URL directly to news aggregation websites like Digg, Reddit, and StumbleUpon.
- subliminalurge, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Hate to break it to ya, but just saying "Not to be a dick" doesn't override the fact that you're being a dick.
If anything, it indicates that you actually know you're being a dick but are going ahead and doing it anyway, thus making you even more of a dick.
Not to be a dick or anything...... - thejadedmonkey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Hackers are probably the most moral group of people around. Sure, they use their own set of morals and standards, but chances are if a hacker claims to have hacked something of this proportion, he's not lying.
- aaronm67, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7My $20 phone from Cingular has custom ringtones from MP3s, and almost every other phone on the market does. It's ridiculous your $600 iPhone doesn't.
- Punisher2K, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6pussy
- tdowling, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9It does! It just doesn't "do everything" yet.
- tdowling, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Sounds more like it ended up the other way around, although you do seem to be holding on to your peg pretty damn tightly. Way to hang in there!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6lol an iDongle.
- funkytaco, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6All it needs now is a walkie talkie, so I can ask my friends 'where dey at'
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Wow Steve! it must be great having free access to air travel! the rest of us suckers are forced to "pay" hundreds of dollars every time.
