- matthall28, on 10/11/2007, -5/+76bruteforcing the password on the mountable dmg as we speak...
- Anonymous3, on 10/11/2007, -5/+68Its 91MB if anyone cares.

I heard that the iPhone cures cancer.
. - cgruber, on 10/11/2007, -7/+49Yeah cool and all but how are you going to make the controls not suck
- inexplicable, on 10/11/2007, -7/+47From the summary: "The iPhone intrested hackers are at it already" - did you just throw darts at a dictionary or something?
- sxtxixtxcxh, on 10/11/2007, -5/+44firmware? that's not the OS. try and keep that in mind.
- ZimShady, on 10/11/2007, -15/+51I think someone hacked your speaking abilities.
- StephenCIreland, on 10/11/2007, -2/+37knowing apples logic (Appletv password being frontrow) try iphone, OSX, leopard, multitouch and firmware
- cleverboy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+33Or... um, the "firmware" is not the ACTUAL operating system software.

If there is anything less related to MacOS running computers, its this.
It's a first step though but not really news worthy or amazing or... anything much. They're invevitably going to need to mount iPhone as a drive though. That alone, and instructions of how... will make a lot of people happy, to be honest. - freakyterrorist, on 10/11/2007, -3/+32Here's the download link...

- Lazyboy0172, on 10/11/2007, -12/+36I hope it is able to be hacked, or to make cutom roms. That's pretty much the dealbreaker for me, I like the internal access I have with my PPC too much.
- EvilDude, on 10/11/2007, -7/+30Here's hoping iPodLinux get something going ;) Although it'd be nice enough to have just 3rd party support in Apple's OS.
- longzheng, on 10/11/2007, -10/+33Considering it's OSX, they did a good job of cutting it down.
- filmbandit, on 10/11/2007, -20/+43jeeze -- can digg just rename its frontpage iphone planet
- evensong, on 10/11/2007, -3/+25FYI, access to the firmware almost guarantees that the iPhone will be hacked to allow 3rd party programs.
Hacking the firmware usually will NOT unlock the phone however (but branding can be removed). - xaxxon, on 10/11/2007, -6/+28or it's not really os x...
- Adrianc333, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21Ah, if i didn't lay in bed for that extra 30min, i would have being able to view the site before it went down. :(

- TheCheeks, on 10/11/2007, -5/+21As much as I hate hearing iPhone stories, this ones nice. Can't wait to see some sick hacked versions of the firmware coming out.
- littleguru1, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19It only has the same name and perhaps same kernel (or trimmed kernel). Windows Mobile is also Windows ;)
- cl0n3x, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17How about water into wine, that would be a better investment.
- ydt89, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15he has a point....
- Solkre, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14That's why they call it the Jesus phone!
- PowerLlama, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16Thank you for your loquacious response. Your penmanship is extraordinary, and you have added a wealth of information to the conversation.
- hakster, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15The first disk image contains a 2minute aiff file that sounds very distorted with crackling noises...
I am currently trying to crack the second dmg file... - IcyStorm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14Would Apple attempt to check iPhones for modified firmware? If so, would they ban iPhone owners with modified versions? If so... that would reallllllllly suck...
- rebotfc, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14Only if you have the chuck norris wallpaper.
- cl0n3x, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12They use a robots.txt file (unlike the lady who sued archive.org) so google cache, duggmirror, and any other sites won't be able to bring it back from the digg effect. All we can do is wait, and hope they can get some faster servers/hosting.
- cl0n3x, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12orly?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Why would it take longer on a dedicated computer?
You obviously have no idea how bruteforcing works. Read up on it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brute_force_attack - skinfitz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11...but Windows Mobile has some recognisable libraries also with regard to Windows. Doesn't make it full Windows though.
- hadi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10just unlock it and let us know how.
- Floris, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Yay for RecoveryMode();
- StephenCIreland, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7breakfast interfered with my catching of the link, -_- damn breakfast
- tomzZz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Looks like the disk image password is stored somewhere on the iPhone (activation_record.plist?).

- elsJake, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10nobody wants to grow kids ...especially someone elses
- shawnz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7linux runs on PPC, ssh has been enabled on appletv, etc etc

- filmbandit, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10the thing is i'm an apple guy -- there should be an iphone catagory, but no, i have to read you 1 gens crap every 5 mins -- it's interminable
- StephenCIreland, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6not if you havent ativated yet, and part of th unlocking scheme of the iphone will be to prevent activation
- maccosmo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6mount it with toast 8, open itunes und enjoy the sound
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8I'll relieve you of your relief.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Of course is not the real OSX. Look at the iPodLinux project, is suppose to be a cut down version of the Linux (kernel), and it is (µClinux) but is a customized version for embedded devices. Apple did something like that with the OSX kernel (a BSD kernel) to run the iPhone.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Maybe that distorted, crackling noise is what they pipe into your phone calls? Maybe that's why its frickin 2007 and we have so-called smart phones that can do everything except make a decent phone call.
- LeonardNimrod, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Seeing as how the cost of the iPhone is not the full retail value with Apple's usual markup, they have a commitment to AT&T and are receiving a portion of the monthly dues there is excellent chance Apple and AT&T have already planned how to keep the iPhone on teh AT&T network. Now, you still plan to use the AT&T network then Apple really shouldn't care. I can't say whether Apple or the hackers are going to win this battle... but it will be fun to read about. :-)
- jeza, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7It already does this.
