- salpairodice, on 10/11/2007, -1/+46I don't understand the big deal with this.
Many, MANY mobile phones have a test mode feature you can access if you know the codes (http://www.wpsantennas.com/pdf/testmode/FieldTestModes.pdf).
Also - you can't "spy" on the network with this...unless you're interesed in a site's CELLID, BCCH, adjacencies or the channels in it's hopping pool (and if you don't know what those things are, test mode's not going to do you any good).
The only value this may have to the more technical users, is it'll give you an actual RSSI value instead of just the "bars" that represent signal strength. - krnldmp, on 10/11/2007, -3/+24How about a phone number that gets you off AT&T's network?
- 10001110101, on 10/11/2007, -6/+25I usually hate people who cry dupe.. But c'mon.. The original wirelessinfo.com article was submitted less than a day ago:
http://www.digg.com/apple/A_look_inside_the_iPhone_s_test_mode
***** gizmodo and their blog spam... They don't add any new information - hell, there's significantly less info in their article than appears in the original. - trghpy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18Yea...
But to teenagers.. this is sooo 1337.. (did i spell that right?) - ridinlow, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15This "feature" has been around forever. In many different handsets.
We used to do it on the old Nokia TDMA handsets back in the day.
*3001#12345# was also used to program TDMA phones as I can recall. - Cytranic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11You're at home sitting on your computer posting to Digg.
- WiZZLa, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Not really. Another note, the code is very similar to the old Nokia field test code from 8+ years ago.
- SPECOPS, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7You're supposed to link to the original article, not a blog (unless that hold the content itself), which links to another link, which links to another link, with the ONLY purpose of increasing ad revenue.
- thepaulm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Pro iPhone, anti ATT response.
- duerra, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10You know what I'm tired of? I'm tired of people whining about "blog spam". Digg was created to bring the power of the news back to the masses. Why are all you diggers so hellbent on returning it back to the mainstream media?
- flashboy131, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5(Anti iPhone/ATT Comment)
- buzzedlightyear, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yah, but did they spell 'firmware' wrong in their field test display like Apple? ;)
- 10001110101, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3IMO, Gizmodo is far more MSM than wirelessinfo.com, which I had never heard of until yesterday.
But, SPECOPS hit's the nail on the head. - operand, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3http://www.cellreception.com/towers/
- rebotfc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3iPhone is Steve's new bluebox?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Apple should develop a high-tech vibrator and call it the *****. Then develop a smaller version suitable for concealment call the ***** Shuffle. I bet these would sell like pancakes to the undersexed wives and girlfriends of Digg-ers.
- zdiggler, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Look likes Nokia code. So Cell phone part in this phone is made by Nokia then?
It just let you see stuff you can't do nothing. interesting thought.
If you got Verizon phone from LG you can do Menu -> 0 -> 000000 as password to program the phone/ test GPS, Field Test Mode, you can even turn a few features on your phone, most of them are in plain English too., You can do all kinds of ***** in those LG phone that it if do something wrong you won't be able to get on any antennas too so becareful there.
If you got Motorola phones there are a tons of hack phone, probably the MOST hacked/able phone out there. so fun.
If got Moto phone they're little different form phone to phone but password is usually 0's on Verizon. - eosp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I still have one of those old Nokia TDMAs as my mobile. Yes, it lets you set your number and mobile ID too. Quite useful for prank calling, cough cough
- signal15, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's been possible to do this for years on the ATT network. I used to do it back in 1999 on a Nokia 6160 with ATT Wireless. On the nokias, you could use it to change the startup banner on the phone and a couple of other things, but you can't do anything shady with it.
- JoeLeo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2If developers had an iPhone SDK they could look at the cell id, etc information and the time of day to set certain user profiles.
For example, if it's 10 am and your iPhone is using a cell tower near your office it could automatically switch the iPhone into vibrate mode. But, if it's 10 am and your iPhone is using your cell towner at home it could ring loudly.
Obviously, this is just the tip of the iceberg - it wouldn't be good enough for navigation but at least you could find the nearest Starbucks when on the road. - lintmonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The new digg comment system is virtually unreadable and unusable with a PC.
- Tobark, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Doesnt work in Philadelphia so far
- crash331, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1buried as lame
- pingviini, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm trying this on my Nokia 6102 and it says requesting... then result unknown.
Does this work on newer phones too? - evensong, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The only real valuable information from FTM, at least on my Motorola is a quantitative measurement for reception. Personally I prefer this over the bars. I guess I'm a math guy.
- wolphcry, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It doesn't dial. It won't hurt anything
- Habemus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I tried this on my iPhone and it asked me if I would like to play a game and gave me this list: Chess, Poker, Global Thermonuclear War, Tic-Tac-Toe. I chose GTnW and turned it off, but it keeps calling me back saying there are 54 hours left in the game and it's my move. WHAT DO I DO?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Blocked.
- postitnote, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1There are other browsers out there for Windows Mobile that works on Digg, minus the AJAX. Digging up, digging down, commenting etc., works.
- Firehed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's not a mainstream issue, it's a somebody profiting (or even taking credit) for someone else's work issue. I run adblock so the former isn't an issue for me, but I've yet to find a Firefox extension that automatically makes digg link to the original source of the news.
- mentor972, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This is the same code that you used to be able to type into the Nokia phones back in the day to get similar info and change the operating frequency.
- blup3ace, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Can you hear me now?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Apple should develop a high-tech vibrator and call it the *****. Then develop a smaller version suitable for concealment call it the ***** Shuffle. I bet these would sell like pancakes to the undersexed wives and girlfriends of Digg-ers.
- 7593825, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0whats the big deal ? I agree with the folks that have actually gone into the test mode. I did it - so what - my service is not any better. My edge network is still slow. My email download takes more time than going to starbucks and hooking on the wifi nework.
- streak, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1(The person who dugg me down has never tried to view digg.com on a WM device. Like most web sites, digg.com is virtually unreadable and unusable with WM.)
- MISDIREK7ED, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Dugg for saying "chief cellular ninja"... that sounds cool as fook.
- doubleblack, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2You can't spy on the NSA.
Buried as inaccurate. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Cool, just tried it and it works. It doesn't call anything, but merely brings up an information panel for AT&T techs or support. I barely understand anything that it says.
- Cytranic, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Can you hear me now?
- theohuxtable, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4i want to try it, but not after that disclaimer. someone else try it!
- zdiggler, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Anti iPhone/ Anti AT&^T.
stupid blog spam.
other phones does it.
that code been around for years on att networks.
What's next start posting standard #*******# GSM commands that work on EVERY GSM phone as ITS ONLY WORKS ON iPhone's?
Digg is full of ***** newbies and non techies, no wonder Apple topics are popular here.
still a cool place thought. - streak, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1The part I like best is where Baguley writes "we cannot be held responsible..." LOL He doesn't know how the legal system works (or doesn't work, as the case may be)!
- john95127, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Can I tell where the cell tower is located? I would use this data to have Google maps give a general indication of my location....
- streak, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2No, I'm at McDonald's on my iPhone. (Try that with Windows Mobile!)
- Gee1004, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2The 5 year buisness contract is aready signed. Too late
- wageslaven, on 10/11/2007, -9/+6What Gizmodo *DOES* do, is appeal to the prescribed bias here on Digg. Apple Good. MS bad. Add some inflammatory language to a blog post, and BAM the teenage techno-neophytes digg it up.
- Cputerace, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1If you are tired of blogspam, use http://www.youpickthenews.com Stories not linking directly to the original source get blocked.
