- JoeBaynham, on 10/11/2007, -1/+44Great but what's it like on the AT&T Network?
- fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22Wait until the kids actually get iphones ... we'll be bombared with stories like "BREAKING: VIDEO OF DIGG ON THE IPHONE!!!!!"
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19Passes to Moses, who shoots! SCORES!!!!
- ckohler, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17Network performance is only half the issue. It's still unknown what kind of power the CPU has. If it's too slow, complex web pages may download quickly but take a while to render. Although, going by what we saw in January, it seems "snappy".
- fkxfkx, on 10/11/2007, -14/+28Is anyone actually planning on buying that thing?
I'm thinking - wait for version 2.
(and no i never bought the original ipod.) - kidd3ckz, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17STEPHEN COLBERT IS WAITING FOR HIS IPHONE, APPLE.
GET WITH IT. - Scruffydan, on 10/11/2007, -5/+17expect several 'stories' (and I am using the term loosely) on the iphone for the next several weeks. Digg is full of apple fanboys, who NEED this phone asap. Of course if this thing was being made by anyone else n one would pay attention.
- dawgma, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11If they put GPS in that thing... then definitely!
- gravis86, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Well, judging from what the aircards do on the Cingular EDGE network, we're in for about 150kbps.
- troyallen069, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Better news than looking at Bill Gates what he looked like as a kid pictures for the hundred time
- Dotmeister, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13Yeah but Buddha makes incremental backups...
- gravis86, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Hell to the no!
Cingular tracks IP address just like any other internet company. Believe me, I used to work in the tech support for aircards. Plus, if you download too much, they can temporarily disable your data service. The network is not made to handle that kind of load. - turpenine, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12if this phone was made by anyone else we would have a few stories, not as many, but we would know about it.
- cokaznrebel, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11This is completly irrelevant to how "fast" the iphone is.
- ericmoritz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8dslreports.com/mspeedtest for my blackjack with full bars on EDGE: 146 kbit/sec; 2.425s latency; 33.553s d/l time for a 600k test.
- Muyoso, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Are you retarded? A torrent would reduce the battery life of the iPhone to about 20 minutes. That, and you would be banned from the network in about a day.
- Muyoso, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Why would you want a torrent application on the iPhone? Do you enter competitions to see how quickly you can widdle down a battery, or how fast you can get kicked off of a data network?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5thanks for the paid ad digg. I will now go back to looking at news.
- ilgaz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Sorry for double comment but this is especially for Digg editors/people:
Put a "iPhone" category to Digg at least for 3 months or we are completely fed up with Apple section as Apple/Mac (you know, computer) owners. The situation will get worse when it actually ships. - turpenine, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4utorrent doesn't even have an osx version
- rebotfc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You're not wrong, just some lamers digging random posts down.
- ilgaz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2We as actual Apple owners _know_ Apple will never offer a real (C++) SDK for anything involved with iPod. I think that is why you get dugg down, you are asking the impossible.
That will be the only phone on planet shipped in 2000s which doesn't have Java. The company which removes Java with false claims will ship a C++ framework and a SDK enough to run an advanced network client/server.
Can you imagine such thing?
That is iPod Video+GSM Phone+Safari/Bundled Apps. That is _not_ a smartphone, stop asking for features which will never get implemented.
Go check www.symbian.com or even Windows CE sites, pick a good looking smartphone and live happily. Don't try to change Apple policies via Digg since you will not succeed as well as some fanboy idiots will digg you down and make you mad. - ilgaz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2If I wasn't lazy to plug it to charger, I would "benchmark" Apple.com with my Sony PSP over Wifi and share the marvellous "benchmark" (!) right now.
- johnhummel, on 10/11/2007, -9/+11I'm torn. If I had a spare $600 to spend, and if I wasn't saving up for a house first, then a new laptop, then a PS3, then I'd consider an iPhone.
But since those things are first - no. So it will probably be a couple of years anyway. - GirSaysDoom13, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5sorry to double-post, but may i ask why I was dugg down? did you disagree with the idea, or did you not like the fact that it was off-topic? i don't get it.
- chazuk, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Why is he being dugg down for wanting a torrent client on his phone?
There is already one for S60 devices. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SymTorrent
I used to use this on my Nokia N91 8GB and found it useful. You should be able to have what YOU want on YOUR phone.
If all the iPhone fanboys want the potential this device has fully realised, you should all be campaigning to get the ***** thing open to developers.
It will never be a smartphone until that happens. - zdiggler, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'm pretty sure it was prerendered in jan show off.
- ilgaz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Nokia N95, http://www.jbenchmark.com/result.jsp?benchmark=net
1688 kbit.
Over 3G, yes cellular network! Not Wifi. Motorola Razr hits 988 kbit too.
About the credibility: The Jbenchmark result details are open for sale, they are that credible in real smartphone/java developer scene. - albiniak, on 10/11/2007, -6/+8someone submit a story about the contradiction between macrumors privacy policy and collecting the *apple.com in the server logs...
- Flamekebab, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@ ricky8765
Trust you? Why, what do you know about the specifics of my phone contract?
I'd expect to get it for free and if not free then for a top-up fee of around £100. - bradleyland, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@ericmoritz
Kudos on the benchmark, but that's only when you have absolutely full signal. The same benchmark for me sitting here at home with my Blackjack at 3-4 bars results in far less spectacular numbers.
200k test: 67 kbps @ 1.016s latency
I'm not really sure how Apple expects anyone to use Google Maps at these kinds of speeds. I've used both Google Maps and Live Search, and it sucks. I have a really good feel for the difference, because I travel regularly between a 3G enabled area (Ft Lauderdale), and a non-3G enabled area (home). At home, it took a full 10 seconds for Live Maps to fill in after a two level zoom. When I'm in a 3G coverage area, the response is literally instant. The map draws in as quickly as the Blackjack can process it. 10 seconds may not seem like a long time, but every time you scroll or zoom, you're stuck waiting 6-10 seconds. It makes the app virtually useless. The entire advance in browser technology the iPhone brings to the table is completely NEGATED by the fact that browsing over EDGE will be painfully slow. WAP pages are slow, how the hell are we supposed to browse the "real" web, as Apple puts it?
We're supposed to get UMTS here in the fall (October). I really can't wait. I'm far more excited about that than I am the iPhone, and hence, the iPhone won't make it in to my stable without UMTS and HSDPA support.
Screencap or it didn't happen. Note the four bars of signal. It was at three during most of the test, which isn't all that bad for signal.

It's nice to see someone reply like that, rather than anonymously bury comments. - hunglowang, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2"157K/second (1262 kbps) to download a 1024 kilobyte file"

- ilgaz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Don't forget it will bring down entire east coast ATT network too! It even has potential to start a global thermo nuclear World war!
:)) - nartvq, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I'm just amazed at how blind brand loyalty is. No one seems bothered by the specs. A lot of iPhonites don't realize how slow EDGE technology is. They're just now getting onto the media-to-handheld wagon. They've never heard of HSDPA or EVDO. Heck, they probably don't even realize how much Apple and AT&T is screwing them over, because AT&T now offers HSDPA that can be accessed by the 8525, the Samsung Blackjack or Treo 750. On top of that, all of these 3G phones cost much less than the iPhone (The Blackjack is just $75).
EDGE
Max DL = 236 Kbps
Max UL = approx 100 Kbps
HSDPA
Max DL = 1.8 Mbps
Max UL = 384 Kbps

- ericmoritz, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3Yeah considering that 3rd party developers are completely locked out of the iPhone, I doubt we'll get anything that Apple disapproves of (until it's hacked) More and more, this phone is looking to be a big piece of hyped up crap. No 3G? How can a revolutionary internet phone have sub-broadband speeds?
Is it's shortcomings going to keep it from selling... Nope, it's going to sell like hotcakes. Am I going to by one? Nope, my real smart phone is still better...

Explain to me why I'm wrong. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Why would you need that when you can just go here and get all you need for your iPhone ? Site is NetiPhoneDonwloads, and can be found here:
http://tinyurl.com/38dfv8 - Codee, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2The bottom line is; most of us think it's a really good phone.
I really don't have a problem, the features are excellent.
It would be a perfect replacement for my Treo, Buuuut those plans are absolutely ridiculous. Rip-off rates. AT&T is betting
the farm and making the iPhone customers pay for it.
So I'll just wait for the new iPod instead. Maybe. - Gloony, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0And be broke by the end of the month.
- danielbachhuber, on 10/11/2007, -12/+11We sure like every scrap of iPhone info we can get, don't we?
