- Sabotage, on 10/11/2007, -0/+122"After further examination, we found a way to open the logic board without completely destroying it like Think Secret did."
ouch. - CAHP19, on 10/11/2007, -3/+76that poor iPhone never had a chance. damn you
- fernB, on 10/11/2007, -0/+69They should take all the parts to the genius bar and say " uh it just fell apart can you help me?"
- Claw787, on 10/11/2007, -8/+64Would like to see one sledgehammered.
- dvdrtrgn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+50Now, will it work after putting it back together?
- wildfire, on 10/11/2007, -0/+48It should work, but there will be four extra screws.
- gamche, on 10/11/2007, -0/+36That was quick enough
- FrozenGonad, on 10/11/2007, -0/+30ThinkSecret broke it..
- sirgolf82, on 10/11/2007, -0/+29It's accessible by paper-clip. See the hole on top of the device? The SIM is tray-loaded.
- atbnet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+27It is user-accessible... http://thinksecret.com/archives/iphonetakeapart/source/iphone08.html
- hadiz, on 10/11/2007, -28/+53Can't believe the SIM chip is not user-accessible.
- behn1220, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Neither did that web server...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16Nah, I heard it was a Geek Squad employee.
- terencec, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15Anybody else besides me that notices the Timestamps in the "photo comments" flips from 2007-06-29 to 1969-12-31
- ShadowTax, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13I was starting to getting tired of hearing about the iPhone , this is a nice way to end the day.
- geminitojanus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Only a matter of time till someone takes a hot air gun to that flash or finds a serial port buried in its guts.
The better question is, can we take the OS off the iPhone and run it one another ARM-based device. - Stopher, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Did they really need to solder the battery in? Couldn't squeeze in a connector?
- chojin42, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Ok, now that we know it's an ARM processor, we can have fun reversing the firmware :)
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Live Streaming iPhone Disassembly! The hottest iPhone sluts on the net stripping for you! 18+ only!
- abdrahman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Apparently there is magic in the iPhone afterall :)
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9See that chip with no markings on it? thats the one apple and Sony use to cause the device to break after the warranty is void.
- Majician, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9I wonder if it'd be possible to pop out the NAND Flash Card and upgrade to the 16gb card?
- skinfitz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8...no doubt this is the 'security' reason third party apps are not allowed. Can't have people going around using whatever network they want. Imagine it.
- BugMeNot2, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10In Soviet Russia.
- Optimaximal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Obviously you have never looked at any battery, ever...
- PathDaemon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6No. Don't you read t3h interneet?
- behn1220, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8Where is that block button?
- FrozenGonad, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4That's a very impressive bit of work they've done there. I just don't have the courage to do that kind of thing. Unless the product is going in the bin.
- geminitojanus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I've heard Samsung had them in sampling quantities (one or two for people in research fields for future products), but I didn't know they were shipping in volume (or even if they really are; websites are notoriously bad for this kind of thing).
Secondly, if you look at the iPhone's board, there's only looks to be one CS line so you're up *****'s creek about connecting that second NAND unless you want to greenwire it and know how to greenwire it with the iPhone's cryptically packaged ARM. - piwy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Digg down first. Then it appears.
- klui, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Ironic: iPhone asks for an unlocked SIM, but the phone is locked. http://thinksecret.com/archives/iphonetakeapart/source/iphone10.html
- bloaty, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Why dont you go see if your head will blend!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Powerbookmedic.com has already flagged itself as the biggest bunch of douchebags ever!!!! Check out these douchebags at:
www.powerbookmedic.com/douchebag - PhireN, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Actually no, according to samsung's websites 16GB (64 Gigabit) chips are available. As for modifications to the board, none are needed IF both chip select (CS1 and CS2) lines are connected and used, you can just disconnect the CS2 pin on the current chip and solder a chip on top of the first chip, connected the CS2 pin to the board.
- KielKilla, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Dude it was only funny the first time... Now you're just repeating yourself
- damnyooneek, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4wait that thing does have a place to put a sim card. i give it a month and someone will find a way to unlock it.
- geminitojanus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Wouldn't be as safe. The iPhone's charger and battery protection ICs are on the board and not on the battery itself unlike previous generations. The conclusion one could come up with would be the battery was chosen at the last minute and they decided to put the circuitry on the board to cope with a wide variety of battery choices. On the upside, this is a lithium polymer battery, so it should last longer than regular lithium ions and provide more power over that lifetime.
If you're really concerned about battery life, learn to properly condition your battery, and how to properly charge it (for example, you can greatly increase the lifetime of a lithium ion chemistry battery by never letting it fall below a 40% charge). There's plenty of information out here on the interwebs to get you started. - halosniper7, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3guess what...it will.
- skinfitz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3...I hope so, however this will be the entire reason that third party apps are not allowed. I wonder if once it's cracked, Apple will alter it so people will be allowed to install third party apps (like they did with Intel Macs and Windows if you remember all the hoo har about the competition to get Windows working on MacIntel).
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4"Breaking" an iPhone is not as interesting as "Disassembling" an iPhone.
- geminitojanus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3We've known for months it has an ARM CPU. Apple ported OS X to ARM for the iPhone and presumably future iPods.
The 3rd party apps problem comes down to incomplete or piss-poorly documented APIs, and has less to do with what CPU architecture it runs on (as GCC will basically let you turn a blind eye to the actual architecture and let your (Objective) C code run the same anywhere). - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I agree. As a former Treo 650 user, i find it odd that it has a tray-loaded sim card, but no replaceable or swapable battery and no sd (or mini sd) expansion slot.
- kelchm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4what the hell does 802.11n have to do with 3g?
- pintomp3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2not as interesting, but much funnier.
- skinfitz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Well the big differences between the Newton and iPhone are the iPhone is tiny in comparison, and also can actually do something useful like make a phone call. With the battery soldered inside it's basically a ticking timebomb of fail, so I guess Apple are planning for people to buy a new one every two years (wait... this sounds familiar...)
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4"How can that really be running OS X?"
Oh, I dunno, they could've *gasp* rewritten it a bit and recompiled it for ARM? Naw. - tnoy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Why upgrade the memory when you can just buy the 16GB model when it comes out?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3It's true. Many diggers masturbated to this.
- Df@ce, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4um... has anyone actually made a phone call with their iPhones yet?
