- Craga89, on 04/08/2008, -1/+36It was as if millions of iPhone developers cried out at once and were suddenly silenced...
Expired firmware, it must be. - MacPerson, on 04/08/2008, -3/+24I am a legit iPhone developer. I expected Apple to provide an updated firmware release BEFORE they disabled the current one. They didn't.
- inactive, on 04/08/2008, -2/+20Why pink?
- emerrill, on 04/08/2008, -1/+18That's not really the answer. A valid dev shouldn't have to. This was just a stupid mistake by Apple, and hopefully they will fix it soon.
- MacPerson, on 04/08/2008, -9/+25Thanks Apple. This definitely helps us developers.
>:-( - gregorypierce, on 04/08/2008, -1/+14Maybe it takes you 6 months to get into a testable state, but since CoreLocation is only usable with an actual device - my app had to run on the device about a week after I got the interface running. And no, we didn't know it was coming, and yes we would like to test on the latest firmware... BUT IT ISN'T AVAILABLE YET. So pipe down because you're clearly uninformed in this area.
- gregorypierce, on 04/08/2008, -0/+12What? We thought that the firmware would expire rendering our devices useless? I dont recall reading that in the release notes for the latest OS release that came out a few weeks back. Maybe I missed it and assumed like every other developer out there that if you're going to expire a development platform, you will release a new one BEFORE the old one expires or you will release a new cert that allows development to continue while you sort your issues out.
This is a MAJOR screw up by somebody who likely didn't know the expire date of the firmware... but should have known. - mindsnare, on 04/08/2008, -1/+13You're a superstar
- emerrill, on 04/08/2008, -1/+12Cause the activation screen on the beta builds are pink. All dev iPhones are now locked at the activation screen. You can only make emergency calls.
- duckyinc, on 04/08/2008, -8/+19Apple Developers are secretly gay
- emerrill, on 04/08/2008, -5/+16Yeah, while I cant afford a second iPhone, at least I had a crap phone I could stuck my SIM card in.
There was a discussion on the Apple site among developers, which was promptly deleted. Contacting developer support gets you nowhere of course, and they have no (known) ETA for a new release. - Thorlord, on 04/08/2008, -3/+13i don't know, blue is my favorite color.
apparently pink is apples favorite color.
maybe apple should see if they can license out the BSoD from Microsoft? - username7D8, on 04/08/2008, -6/+16b/c blue was already taken! haha
- blazes816, on 04/08/2008, -1/+10You don't seem to understand how software development works. You don't program the entire thing, and then test it.
- kkiran, on 04/08/2008, -3/+12Strange! Legit Devs see the pink screen of death and all those who pwned their iPhones still use it :) wow, pwnage definitely rocks :)
- blazes816, on 04/08/2008, -1/+9Well, I guess you should find another job then.
- ajadoniz, on 04/08/2008, -3/+11secret? dude, steve jobs wears turtle necks all the ***** time.
- akilleen, on 04/08/2008, -2/+9Because for every crash, Apple will donate money for breast cancer.
- MacParrot, on 04/08/2008, -0/+7Nicely said. Apple screwed the pooch on this. Having developement software (especially beta versions) expire isn't anything new, but not having something available to take its place AND render the device (in the case, devs iPhones) nearly useless ISN'T the way to instill confidence. Especially when you're trying to bring in as many developers as you can in a short amount of time.
Apple screwed up and should just say so. - SgtBlue, on 04/08/2008, -0/+6No, it just means your phone is hacktivated with something like Pwnage Tool. Nice job trying to bluff, though.
- mobilehavoc, on 04/08/2008, -0/+6Normally wouldn't be a big deal but the fact that for some people it's their ***** cell phone as well that they are paying $ every month to use, I'd say it's pretty damm messed up.
- StraylightSA, on 04/08/2008, -3/+9Just pwn it and keep working.
- skeletorcares, on 04/08/2008, -1/+6secretly is the antonym of the correct word.
- gregorypierce, on 04/08/2008, -0/+5The beta firmware doesn't disable phone functionality. Whomever told you that lied to you.
- sheebz, on 04/08/2008, -1/+6Locked down SDK, pink screen... wow. I get the feeling that this apple's market share is going to plummet when Android is released to the masses.
- inactive, on 04/08/2008, -0/+4if (strpos($caption, $iphone)) $caption.diggs ++200
- cap11235, on 04/08/2008, -8/+12I guess this proves, once and for all, that Apple is gay.
- patokeefe1, on 04/08/2008, -0/+4I wouldn't connect your phone to your computer if I were you...
- MacParrot, on 04/08/2008, -1/+5CRAP! "teacher". It's a bitch when you pwn yourself.
- PathDaemon, on 04/08/2008, -0/+4It's just a setting — if a company bought several iPhones for testing but didn't want to pay for service on all of them, they could be set up without phone functionality.
- MalenfantX, on 04/08/2008, -1/+5and you seem to be a 12 year-old.
- brenthals, on 04/08/2008, -0/+3Why are there multiple identical posts by the same users?
- MacParrot, on 04/08/2008, -0/+3You don't like Apple because you can't write complete sentences, use proper grammar, or be able to laugh at yourself? Which is it?
- tucktan, on 04/08/2008, -1/+4i see what you did there
- MacParrot, on 04/08/2008, -0/+3Somewhere, your English teach cries bitter tears
- jjpertusch, on 04/08/2008, -0/+3gray is my favorite color. (.. i felt so symbolic)
- dext3r, on 04/08/2008, -0/+3ok counting crows
- lepton, on 04/08/2008, -0/+3I will guess they want to get an SDK beta 3 out and thought they would have it by now, but it is a few days late. Hopefully we will see it momentarily. Beta 2 is tantalizing, but incomplete and undocumented, so I've been looking forward to an update for a while.
By the way one of the two apps I'm writing relies completely on the accelerometer and so I can't test the darn thing since I didn't get in the beta program (yet). The other one relies on locations, grr! I can get going, but hurry up and open that beta program! - inactive, on 04/08/2008, -4/+6If M$ pulled shenanigans like this there would be a Digg riot. Apple does it, no big deal really. Probably user error.
- MacParrot, on 04/08/2008, -2/+4No it was a typo. Here's what he meant to say:
"I can't afford anything nice, so I tried to steal an iPhone and got bopped in the head by a rent-a-cop and everyone laughed at me...I can't afford anything nice, so I tried to steal an iPhone and got bopped in the head by a rent-a-cop and everyone laughed at me..."
There fixed! - thcobbs, on 04/08/2008, -9/+11Like legit developers really didn't know this ***** was coming. And you don't need a development unit until you're ready to TEST your code. And as a "developer" wouldn't you want to TEST your code on the latest firmware drop?
- Timmmm, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2I don't think that would even compile. You meant *ptr = 0;
Obviously whoever wrote the program would have to do the donating! - MacParrot, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2You didn't read the article did you?
- ucg1, on 04/08/2008, -2/+4Apple blew it on this one.
- spade, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2Bury this thread, SDK 3 is out! Dev's download now.
- amdforever, on 04/08/2008, -1/+3Pics or it didn't happen
- PathDaemon, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2So you don't think that Apple should have had a new firmware ready before this one expired? You don't think that at least a few devs might have been at a development phase where they would have benefitted from on-device testing? You think that all the "smart" devs had an extra cell phone for themselves in case this happened?
- ucg1, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1There's a chance that you'll have to do some hackery to get official apps on an unlocked phone. We'll have to wait and see of course. But since you can buy apps for the iPod touch, I can't imagine it would be hard to get around if they do try to block unlocked phones.
- sw1val, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1Developers are n00bs!
- emerrill, on 04/08/2008, -2/+3There is no reason to expect that it will work any differently then the iTunes Store on iPhone. You have to have an Apple account, but otherwise it works fine.
