- mtheoryx83, on 10/11/2007, -13/+1Interestingly, on Mac OS X, Safari 3 beta, the ads are partially covered up and the footer just kinda ends down there with text breaking out of the background image. Wonder if this site was developed specifically for the iPhone or something?
- jdaniel284, on 11/01/2007, -73/+13No one is actually going to buy an iPod that lets you make phone calls but requires a $2000 2-year contract to get it to work. There are much much better alternatives. Only the true believers are going to pocket up the money required for this gimicky toy.
- donwilson2, on 10/11/2007, -14/+9Wow, that's a rather short list. If the public had the developer kit they got at the conference, I'm sure we'd have a ***** load more applications ready before the iPhone release.

So, where again are these other smart phones that don't require a wireless provider for service? - madmage, on 10/11/2007, -8/+5I find it interesting that youtube has an official iPhone app isn't the full youtube, only movies they've reencoded into h.264.
I find this more evidence to show that there will be no Flash on the iPhone. - markormesher, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12@madmage
It was confirmed that there would be no flash for the iphone... - althe3rduww, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5the iphone safari is supposedly the full safari, Mac OS X safari includes flash out the of the box, why wouldn't the iphone? And who confirmed no flash, source please?
- tyler0is0sexy, on 10/11/2007, -9/+14Steve Jobs confirmed no flash compatibility.

"Steve Jobs confirmed no flash compatibility."
Well luckily, youtube mobile doesn't use flash. - rblinne, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2If you look closely at the Apple ad "watered down" you will see NY Times embeded video in the middle of the left column. ( http://www.apple.com/iphone/ads/ad4/ ) This is done in flash. As an experiment I removed the flash plug in from Safari and it did not show the first frame of the video as shown on the commercial.
- leontes, on 10/11/2007, -13/+3Here I was thinking I could find a list to apply for an iphone contract!
Pretty interesting. It'd be neat to see how many of these actually work when with the phone when I get it.- drouk1556, on 10/11/2007, -6/+17Yes, you now have to apply for a phone. Apple doesn't want "just anybody" using the iPhone, you have to have proper credentials and two written recommendations submitted by July 1st in order for consideration.
- donwilson2, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7drouk, don't forget about references.

- markormesher, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4don't forget that you've got to have at least one IT certification.
If you have an Apple Pro Certification, you're pretty much in the clear. - drouk1556, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Apple reportedly only accepts about 6% of total applicants, the majority are accepted by Microsoft. The whole process takes 7-10 business days and a lot of money. It's a bitch, if you ask me.

http://www.iphonefeedreader.com - PovRayMan, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7Another failed wordpress blog. I wish digg.com wasn't a link to ***** blogs. The digg users need to stop ***** submitting stories to blogs because #1 99.999% of blogs are not worth reading and #2 it's just another site to crawl though to get to the main story.
This site was so much better before "V3" which only goes to show how "internet democracy" works. Or fails to work.
Thankfully being dugg down is just about entirely meaningless, oh well. Go go gadget Internet democracy! - consonance, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11Are we calling them applications now? Last I checked, they were called "websites." Sure, you COULD call them web apps... but since when was a specialized interface an application? That's all I see here. The whole situation is ludicrous. The iPhone is a worthless platform until Apple develops and distributes an iPhone SDK. Apple's basically giving no incentive to developers to write apps, because A) Devs can't distribute programs for profit, and B) There's no access to the hardware or kernel.
- mtheoryx83, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6FINALLY! Someone acknowledges that this Web 2.0 app crap is...well, crap. Why spend resources developing a "web app" for the iphone? You're gonna put ads on the site and hope you recoup your costs? What a buncha crap.
Im a huge mac fan, but I say DONT develop a damn thing for this phone and just let Apple sit and steam in it. The moment they announced they were delaying Leopard for the sake of the iPhone, they lost quite a bit of respect from me. I've been ticked for a while with this whole iPod push. Now the iPhone is nothing more than a next-gen iPod. But to delay your damn OS for that? Why not gracefully bow out of the market, and focus on developing iPods already? That's what it seems like you really want, right?
I say NO iPhone development! Don't give away something for nothing! - lordmike, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3"I say NO iPhone development!"
Well, that should be pretty easy, since (like you said) one CAN'T develop for the iPhone...
It's about time that the rest of the world stopped buying the Apple spin and started calling a spade a spade. You can't develop for the iPhone.. you CAN develop web pages that look good on the iPhone, but that is hardly the same thing... so this, iPhone "apps" thing is total BS.... and yet, so many people are buying into propoganda... (sigh) - YoGramMamma, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Not to sound like the Apple troll of the day (seeing as how i'm as bummed as the next guy that theres no SDK for the iPhone) but reeeeeeally people... how many of you actually think that decision to not allow 3rd party apps was totally in Apple's / steve's hands?
I mean... apple is a hardware company, out to sell units.... units of what they believe is the best phone ever. If they feel they could capture more buyers by opening up the phone to 3rd party developers... then they would... why wouldn't they? .. more money for them right?.... ohhhh thats right.. theres AT&T -- the other half of the equation.
I'd be willing to bet that the terms of whatever they cooked up to bring this phone to the masses are already shaky as it is.. and AT&T goes... "listen here apple... we're giving into your crazy demans and meeting you half way on this deal, so you need to do some things for us.... like not allow VOIP calls, or for that matter 3rd party. [since we all know iPhoneSkype would be the first thing out]. I guarantee you if this was possible I would get the cheapest minute plan possible since I make a great deal of my calls from home or work, or somewhere that there's wifi - which AT&T doesnt/cant regulate. THis means less money for them.
Thats the first thing I thought of when Steve mentioned the whole web 2.0 + AJAX thing. AT&T seemed cool with that since you still have to buy a data plan for that to work best... I think the whole "we want the phone to be secure and dont want it crashing blah blah" was all a smokescreen to give some psuedo-answer as to why these actions were being made... and not to be like "well we wanted to but damn at&t wouldn't let us." I mean, really, does Steve/apple reeeally care if your phone crashes because of some 3rd party app you put on there yourself? NOPE... why, because they's already got your money. Not to make them out like money grabbing bastards, but lets face it.... again.. they're a hardware company... with bills to pay, stocks to raise, and investors to keep happy.
THis is why im glad to see people making do with the situation and creating these web "apps" {cough*sites*cough} and not just bitching about not having a real SDK. I'm tired of seeing everyone ride the '"wah no real 3rd party apps/steve is an idiot/iPhone suxxorz" train.
$0.02USD. - cleverboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1consonance, you're dead wrong. Not only are web "apps" APPS, who said you can't "charge" for them? The fact that you can tie it to a "service" is one of the biggest points. Login, and access... along with secure connection for ecommerce. I've made a list of current apps here: http://forums.figma.com/forumdisplay.php?f=15
I'm looking to really help facilitate iPhone developers with the FiGMA website, so anyone interested in pitching in, come by and register (and introduce yourself http://forums.figma.com/showthread.php?p=15 ). In the next couple of weeks, we'll be scouring the web and putting together one hell of an asset & capabilities list for iPhone developers. Don't knock it quite yet. - consonance, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@Cleverboy
But how are they apps? I see in your forum "apps" like Amazon For iPhone, iPhone Digg, and iTweetr. Were those produced for a desktop, they would be known as alternative GUIs. You should call them what they really are. OneTrip is nothing that you couldn't do on a text editor application. I would rather put my grocery list in a local, easily accessible file than a website over which I have little control and have to access on a slow 2G network.
Furthermore, it's foolish to suggest that devs want to charge you a monthly fee to use their product. That's another level of complexity for the app you want to write. You need another level of infrastructure to give users access and verify secure data. There's also the fact that it's a monthly fee that's being charged! Let me ask you this: Why is ITMS popular? Is it because it allows consumers to subscribe to the service for songs that are lost if the subscription runs out, or because consumers are charged once for a song that they get to keep forever? The former model has been unprofitable since the beginning, and no one likes it, since the consumer doesn't get to keep anything. With desktop apps, the developer can write a one-time verification system using keys or codes. People don't want ecommerce for everything. Plus, you've paid your one-time fee, and you can keep the program forever.
I'm not dead wrong; you're not seeing the entire issue. - cleverboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1No, I think you're dead wrong AND I'm seeing the entire issue. Look, I'm a pragmatist. I deal with the world as it is, and I look at where I see it going. While you're still insisting on the utter supremacy of the executable, I'm here acknowledging the power of the run-time script.
Let's be serious... if you think all there is to a "web app" is simply building a web page, then you're DEAD WRONG. The website that is the topic of this Digg, misses the point however (I agree), as this "FastApp" launcher, is nothing more than a basic webpage with pictures. We don't have to argue about that. Where we disagree, is in your panning of Web 2.0 as a serious development platform for REAL applications.
OneTrip... IS an application. It has functions and behaviors, and the author is refining the app with feedback from users. There are "useability" issues, and beta testing different features. The "usefulness" of the tool isn't to simply allow for the reading information, but to organize information brought to it by its users. If you don't think that is an APPLICATION, then you're clinging to some strange definition in an attempt to simply be "right".
I think you had a number of good points, about the low-level capabilities often associated with "real" apps (access to hardware, etc), but you miss the point if you think that all "real" apps (in your view) are created equal. You could be entitled to compile a source for the iPhone, and Apple could STILL cordon you off from accessing certain things. If you were to ask what was possible on, for instance, Palm.. I'm sure it would be just as instructive to know what ISN'T possible with Palm, by design.
At the risk of getting into politics, the case for web apps, is similar to the case when people lobby for a federal form of identification that doesn't have everything hanging off the driver's license. Sometimes a driver's license simply needs to be a license to drive, and not a surefire route to identity theft. Similarly, sometimes a sandboxed "web app" more than fits the bill. Not powerful? That's silly. Google Docs and Sheets are plenty powerful, and so aren't a slew of Web 2.0 systems. Are these simply "web pages"? Sorry, that's BS. Let me show you something. Go here: http://www.xs4all.nl/~peterned/games/operation043/ Use your arrow keys and play a level. Is this simply a "web page"? Make sure you're using Safari or Firefox, and go here: http://www.blobsallad.se/ Is that simply a "web page"? Play with Mr. Blobby and hit "H" a few times. Toss them around with your mouse. Fun, huh? The REASON why this level of interactivity in Web 2.0 apps hasn't caught on, is because Internet Explorer and its NEANDERTHAL ways, is the dominant browser, and did not go out of its way to support things like the CANVAS tag or even SVG (natively) when other browsers like Safari, Firefox and Opera did. I mean, if it isn't the web-based Open Source EyeOS project, its the awesome stylings of script.aculo.us.
There's SO much potential in developing apps via DHTML, that companies like Adobe find themselves launching WebKit based projects like AIR, and being asked questions like "Do I need to use Flex in my AIR app, or can it just be DHTML"? To which they say, "No, you don't have to use Flex".
Am I one track minded in appreciating web apps over traditional apps? No. I like using languages that need to be compiled too. I however, have a preference for run-time languages through. They're quicker to develop with when you know what you're doing. We'll have to see what Apple has in store with regards to offline usage however. Maybe we're left holding offline apps in our extra tabs, who knows? Personally, I think that works perfectly fine for me. I'll keep Safari running permanently with 10 web apps in store, caching information to cookies, until they auto-sense a reconnect. Big deal... oh, I'm SO inconvenienced!
Meh. Come on. - consonance, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@Cleverboy
No, you're still missing the point. While Google Apps are actually web apps (which I had forgotten about), Google Apps weren't developed for the iPhone. Google Apps were built for general usage across Windows, OSX, and Linux. That's a problem the iPhone doesn't have, since every one will have the same operating system. Also, Google Docs is not built in a form factor that fits the iPhone. But you're right that in the end web apps can do some of the same things that offline programs can do. So?
The iPhone is a unified platform, so there's no reason to have web apps. Just because you can have them doesn't mean you should. For instance, if I used a copy of Linux that didn't allow me to install applications, I would be really angry. I KNOW that Linux can install packages, but for some reason the distro won't let me. I KNOW that OSX can install applications, but for some reason the iPhone won't let you. Why is Apple telling developers to use a universal platform for an app when OSX can do lots of things (e.g. Core Animation) that a web app can't?
I've tried OneTrip, and it's very good at what it does: Building lists. I tried the platform game, and it was very jerky, even though my PC is not but a few years old. The blob game won't work on the iPhone, because Flash isn't supported on it.
But in the long run, you're causing developers a lot of grief in restricting them to web apps. The bottom line is that for every thing they can do with a web app, there are twice as many things that can't be done with a web app. Right now the body of iPhone apps is constituted by "web apps" that try to compensate for websites viewed on regular PCs. What is the strangest is that iPhone apps are a question, not a certainty; if the iPhone had an SDK, there would be no uncertainty.

At the same time, all you people claiming the iPhone is a bust should relax. Apple hasn't had too many misses lately, well maybe the iPod HiFi, and this product does do things your phone won't do. You keep complaining about the lack of an SDK but there was never an SDK for the iPod if I'm not mistaken. - iBookG4, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Is this site not meant to be viewed on the iPhone itself? - MacParrot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Can you say WHY it's guaranteed to break after a few months? OH! Because it's from Apple. I mean, EVERYONE'S iPod broke after a few months which is why Apple has sold over 100 million of them. Imagine all those people, going out and buying iPods every few months because the one they had broke. A few hundred dollars down the tubes 3-4 times a year.
Or maaaaaybe, there have been a few that broke but those people are internet screamers, or maybe people that really never bought one but love to slam Apple. Apple isn't perfect and there have been many legitimate complaints about iPods. But oversimplified crap like they all break is nonsense.
FTR: I WON'T be buying an iPhone. Don't need it as a phone, it's other web features are nothing I currently want, and its storage is too small to make a decent iPod.
