Oh we have to wait until summer? I am no longer happy. - PunkFenixJT, on 03/17/2009, -10/+74Anyone else call ***** on the "hardware" limitation preventing 1st gen iPhones from having MMS?
I do..and I'm rather pissed cause I don't feel like paying $10/month more for 3g when my area doesn't even have it. - inactive, on 03/17/2009, -4/+52Flash is such a processor hog... I suspect that Adobe will have to make some major changes to it. i had to temporarily use an older 1.5 ghz laptop while my desktop was out for repair and Flash was nearly useless on that.
- foolishwolf, on 03/17/2009, -7/+50Beta here I come!
- ehaugan, on 03/17/2009, -8/+48Copy and paste? Ohzzz nooooz! I guess the resident Apple haters here will have to solely focus on Apples evil proprietary headphones now! That, and of course, how much those darn Apple products cost!

Not exactly condoning it, but hey if you can't wait, it's your money - theak, on 03/17/2009, -3/+35I'm so very tempted. But also so very cheap.
I am a walking conflict. - yokozuka, on 03/17/2009, -2/+32Or wait until it hits the torrents.
- gargantuan, on 03/17/2009, -2/+32Is it only me that noticed Oceanic Flight 815 in that demo?
- meamog, on 03/17/2009, -1/+26It is silly, but has to do with the accounting methods Apple uses.
Still, you don't see my iPod 5G getting iTunes Genius support for ANY price, do you? $10 isn't too bad. - inactive, on 03/17/2009, -4/+27Peer-to-peer Wi-Fi connectivity
to me this is better than copy and paste or anything. - jbella, on 03/17/2009, -4/+27A good phone is more than just a list of features. Yes these features have been available on other phones before.. but that doesn't mean those phones were better. I would much rather have an iPhone with fewer features than a WinMo phone with all the bells and whistles.
- nickels, on 03/17/2009, -3/+25Here is why you are wrong: once you paid for the touch you didn't give any more money to Apple (or AT&T) except for buying apps and accessories. We iPhone users get to pay them $20-30 a month for a data plan, plus the price of using the phone service. So, that is how they get you touch users to give them more money. We iPhone users are already fleeced to the point where they figure they'll throw us this bone for free.
- bradleyland, on 03/17/2009, -1/+22MMS does not require an additional radio. MMS is an encoding method/messaging protocol. It's all software.
Now shut up about things you don't understand. - BrendanSheehan, on 03/17/2009, -4/+25These guys so pwn Engadget at these live events. Engadget podcast is worth a listen though.
- diggapleeeze, on 03/17/2009, -0/+20I'd just like a "Today" screen when the phone is locked you could quickly see upcoming appointments or number of unread emails and messages by hitting the power button.
- inactive, on 03/17/2009, -2/+21Very well organized. I like.
- inactive, on 03/17/2009, -4/+23can i please get a customizable iTunes "now playing"/main screen?! i'd love to be able to see more song tag information on the main iTunes window besides just the album cover and the artist/album/title... such as rating, year, etc... per my personal preferences.
also voip to talk over wifi in my home where i get poor AT&T call quality - JTMON, on 03/17/2009, -2/+20I call BS and the f-ing cydia app Swirly MMS which I have used proves it. I can't believe that. Well, I suspect it won't take long for a free version to hit cydia with the api for it being there.
- Ribbys, on 03/17/2009, -0/+18yeah, jailbreaking wont be as appealing to me once this 3.0 comes out, assuming all of this is in 3.0 and not in a 3.2 release that is still a year away! I'l miss the custom theme but expect the firmware will get cracked again in due time.
- bffoley, on 03/17/2009, -9/+25What's this "$10 for iPod Touch" *****? If its free for the iPhone it should be free for everyone.
- KSUdesigner, on 03/17/2009, -1/+17And lasers. Where are the frickin' lasers?
- monkeymad2, on 03/17/2009, -5/+21Which seems like bull...
- jbella, on 03/17/2009, -2/+18Gee.. If apple only listed to you in the first place maybe the iphone would have been a success.
/sarc - Qumahlin, on 03/17/2009, -2/+17Which is a lie because Swirly MMS worked just fine on the original iphones until ATT put account blocks in place to prevent it from being used.
It's a way to force people to upgrade, plain and simple. Your going to see 1st gen iphones going for like 125 bucks and less on craigslist - inactive, on 03/17/2009, -3/+17That's a bummer about no MMS on the iPhone 2G. Is that really a hardware limitation and not a firmware one?
- MiDri, on 03/17/2009, -3/+17Um maybe the original 2g iphone only has a 255 character buffer for its carrier channel information, that would effectively make sending or receiving any image over 15x15 impossible
- nickels, on 03/17/2009, -14/+28No MMS or stereo bluetooth on original 2G iPhones - BOOOOO!
Flash support coming soon? Doubt it. - Apeezee, on 03/17/2009, -7/+21Finally. What is interesting is that a LOT of these new features have been jailbroken apps for quite some time. :) It really looks like they have just been monitoring what goes on Cydia and then developing off of that. What still remains is support for information on the lock screen and video. IMO
- Straat, on 03/17/2009, -1/+15................
Ah the waiting game sucks.....lets play hungry hungry hippos. - Soup4Brains, on 03/17/2009, -13/+26Why should Touch users have to pay an extra 10 bucks? They already pulled this once (charging extra for apps like Calendar on the first-gen Touch) and it was ridiculous then too.
- MacParrot, on 03/17/2009, -0/+12Because he has an iPhone and doesn't want to jailbreak it?
- specter13, on 03/17/2009, -2/+14It is so rare that you get almost everything you want on an update.
I really would like flash support but I am not holding my breath. - Iwantawii, on 03/18/2009, -0/+11I can now confirm that iPhone 3.0 works! I made a test call/text/email so at least I didn't get "bricked."
The firmware update took about 5 minutes. Then another 5 minutes to download iTunes 8.1. I'll throw in another 5 minutes for clicking "I Agree" every two seconds o_O.
Turns out I had to register my device with the SDK program on the Dev website. I wasn't prepared to do this and needed my DeviceID for my phone online. The only documentation on Apple's website showed how to do this using XCode but I really didn't want to have to install all that jazz to play around with v3.0. Combing the internets, I found that you can locate your device id thru iTunes -- which didn't work because iTunes had my phone info on lockdown until I registered it online.
You can find your device id on your own computer if you've used your iphone on it before. On OSX it resides in ~/Library/Lockdown/ , and C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\Lockdown in Windows.
A quick unplug/plug of my phone got the juices flowing again and I was registered and good to go in under a minute.

Spotlight is now a "page" in your home screen that you can slide to. It's rediculously fast, thorough, and cool.

Pretty easy to get going for a newb with now MacOSX development experience.
I'll post here if anything interesting comes up.
Good luck! - Angostura, on 03/17/2009, -2/+13Soup4Brains Your Touch won't magically stop working if you don't upgrade to 3.0 you know.
Personally, I'm most interested in the new ability to sync Notes with the desktop - sKizZz, on 03/17/2009, -3/+14C'mon torrent.
- Soup4Brains, on 03/17/2009, -3/+14$300 actually. And yes.
I bought a touch so I WOULDN'T get nickel-and-dimed. - jbella, on 03/17/2009, -1/+12Except for the fact that they have done this every year since the iphone was introduced.
- monkeymad2, on 03/17/2009, -2/+12Exactly, cut your crap about radios.
If it can GRPS / EDGE it can MMS. Full stop. - Soup4Brains, on 03/17/2009, -0/+10They are/were, but nobody knows if Apple will ever actually approve it.
- foolishwolf, on 03/17/2009, -3/+12Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it reported that Adobe was working on a special version of Flash for the iPhone? Was this a rumor proven false? I never fully checked it out.
- Apeezee, on 03/17/2009, -0/+9alternapop-
I believe they mentioned that it will have VOIP support. Maybe not right out, but they said voice would be supported in applications, and it doesen't use the phone portion. - jbella, on 03/17/2009, -3/+12Interesting.. it appears that the original iphone is not capable of supporting A2DP and MMS.
Aparently MMS uses a different radio that the 1G does not have. - inactive, on 03/17/2009, -1/+10G1 is the zune of the smart phone...
- yikiad, on 03/17/2009, -0/+9if you go to a university, you can get enroll for free.
- tracydanger, on 03/17/2009, -0/+9Research how the pricing scheme goes for each device. They explained that about two years ago.
- stankuo, on 03/17/2009, -0/+9now we play the waiting game...
- gweedo767, on 03/17/2009, -0/+9MMS is either a TCP/IP connection to a WAP gateway or SMS w/ a MIME encoded attachment. Something tells me that the iPhone 2G has a TCP/IP stack for option 1 and can do SMS if they wanted option 2.
- Iwantawii, on 03/17/2009, -1/+9i just signed up the $99 developer's account to get the beta. label me how you will.
still waiting on an "activation code" email and it's been about an hour. i'll post an update here if any progress happens. unless i forget about this comment. whichever is sooner. -
