- priegog, on 10/27/2008, -1/+44No, you bastard! I won't fall for it again!
Last time we agreed to meet up you left me waiting at the airport, and I was never able to contact you about the money I had deposited in your account! - SamirGupta, on 10/27/2008, -3/+42Ce n'est pas digg.fr
- peestandingup, on 10/27/2008, -1/+21Android better than OS X Mobile? Perhaps. Its debatable.
The actual G1 hardware better than iPhone's? You gotta be kidding me. - wonderwal, on 10/26/2008, -2/+21the baseband is the heart of the iPhone, and what controls the communications. It is the core of the system.
- thallium205, on 10/27/2008, -0/+17It's simply one of those Algerian scam emails en francais..
- wonderwal, on 10/26/2008, -3/+16oh yes! At last total 3g network independence
- Zippo, on 10/27/2008, -1/+12So, when you finally unlock your iPhone 3G, what are you going to do with that AT&T contract?
- meghalc, on 10/27/2008, -3/+14Now how do we get Android on an Iphone? :)
- Archon810, on 10/27/2008, -3/+12"broke in"? seriously?
- Flytrap, on 10/27/2008, -1/+10I don't understand this... in every country that I have been to over the last few months (and yes, I do get to travel a bit) the iPhone is not network locked. In South Africa (where I live and bought my iPhone) it is illegal to prevent someone from changing their network provider, so all iPhones (sold by Vodafone subsidiary, Vodacom) are not locked (I actually have a contract with Vodacom's biggest competitor because they offer better data rates). Countries and territories that I have been to where the iPhone is officially offered but is not network locked:
Austrailia, Hong Kong, Kenya, Nigeria, Portugal, Poland, Portugal, South Africa.
So, it looks like most of the world got the iPhone late (some of us a year late), but the early birds (US, and most of western Europe) got the bad [network locked] deal - LemonDefragger, on 10/27/2008, -1/+9the baseband is the heart of the iPhone, and if you destroy it the iPhone will die. It is the core of the system.
- jtbell04, on 10/27/2008, -0/+7I would pick up a G1 or an N95 in no time if they had 16 GB or more of storage and a good media player. The only reason I have an iPhone and note an arguably superior smartphone is because there's just no contest in terms of the iPhone's usage as a music/video player.
Sadly, smartphone makers have yet to realize that people don't encode their mp3s in 64kbps anymore and we'll actually pay for something with a navigable GUI and a non-***** syncing client... - macslut, on 10/27/2008, -0/+7Really? Because I just happen to have recently developed a relationship with the Finance Minister of Algeria. I can't reveal the details of the relationship, but suffice it to say, I'm about to become very wealthy. I'll ask my new friend to see about getting this scammer busted.
- shmatt, on 10/27/2008, -1/+8I would suggest you take your own advice there, buddy
- fumar, on 10/27/2008, -1/+8I love having a full keyboard. For someone who texts, ims, and emails a lot the G1 is perfect compared to the iPhone. I showed off my G1 this weekend to a bunch of people who work with macs and all have iPhones and they expressed their dissatisfaction with the phone and were thoroughly impressed by my G1.
That said, the lack of a 3.5mm port is inexcusable and is the biggest flaw in the G1. - KingChronic, on 10/27/2008, -1/+8Actually, this is 'kind of' major news, unlike half the articles that get posted here about the iPhone :)
- priegog, on 10/27/2008, -0/+6Yeah, well that's what people mean when they say the telecom business is broken in the US.
- ubenjammin2, on 10/27/2008, -1/+6Yes but in order to buy an iphone you have to sign a contract with AT&T
- Juaquin, on 10/27/2008, -0/+5You don't understand the economics of cellphone plans and hardware. In the US, it only costs $200 for the phone, but you're locked to the plan so they make the money back. In other countries, you pay more for the phone ($600-800) but aren't locked into the plan. The phone/plan model is nice if you already use the provider (AT&T, like I do), but sucks for everyone else.
Also, in the US (at least California), providers are "required" to provide an IMEI unlock code after a certain period (90 days, I believe) if your account is in good order. Unfortunately, no one has taken AT&T to court over it so they still refuse to do it. - yardie, on 10/27/2008, -0/+43G iPhones have a plastic back with the chrome trim. The back is either black or white on 16GB versions. The 1st Gen iPhones had a full chrome back, which necessitated the little plastic part at the bottom for the Wifi/GSM/bluetooth antennae
- dolbinau, on 10/27/2008, -0/+4Android has the potential to be better than OS X (For iPhone) but at the moment it is no match.
- elmetald00d, on 10/27/2008, -0/+4no sir. verizon is CDMA. only tmobile and att.
- sgvprelude, on 10/27/2008, -2/+6It's not just a cell phone!! It's a ipod/phone/web browser/ mobile porn player!!
- PixelD, on 10/27/2008, -0/+4Unlock != Jailbreak. Both Iphones have been jailbroken and thats where you will see copy & paste. We still don't have a useful c&p solution in well over a year.
- Kanaka, on 10/27/2008, -0/+4Took longer than i expected but i guess Apple really locked that thing down. Anyway props to them for sticking with it and making a breakthrough
- se7en11, on 10/27/2008, -0/+4Does anyone know if that once it's unlocked you can use this with Verizon? I don't care about using 3G or Edge since there's wifi everywhere I go. I just want to use it as a standard cell phone and to stop from caring my iTouch and other cell phone.
- inactive, on 10/27/2008, -1/+5fumar - If you'd used an iphone you;d realise that the virutal keyboard is MUCH easier to use than hitting tiny buttons. Or maybe we just disagree
- drvelocity, on 10/27/2008, -1/+4臭法國人!
- clockdist, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3...more like AT&T is doing *facepalm* PWNED!
I doubt Apple cares that much. - pcayuela, on 10/26/2008, -3/+6Great news!
- specialK16, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3*Checks digg.fr*
- inactive, on 10/27/2008, -2/+5This is not important in the US - where it is most needed - as at&t 3G system is different than the only other GSM provider, T-Mobile. An unlocked iPhone 3G may work on T-Mobile, but only in edge mode not high-speed 3G. In that case, you might as well get a 1st gen iPhone unlocked. IE: The iPhone 3G unlocked will not work on T-Mobile USA (in high speed).
- LeekMibles, on 10/27/2008, -4/+7Wait, I must be missing something. Is the iPhone 3G the ones with the all black or white back? Or are there black/white backs that aren't the new gen 3G versions? Mine is the 1st generation edge only crap but my buddy has the new gen one and it works just fine. That would ordinarily sound really stupid but the thing is, we live in China. And he bought it here in China--mainland, not Hong Kong.
- seenxu, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3can't wait the unlock!
- LemonDefragger, on 10/27/2008, -1/+4Pourquoi afficheriez ce message sur Digg si vous aviez besoin de la "discrétion"?
And why did you make me read French....
Fascinating. - aristideau, on 10/27/2008, -1/+4They are still locked in Australia.
You have can pay an extra $100 to get it unlocked (with Optus anyway) - kevdude421, on 10/27/2008, -3/+5the baseband is the heart of the iPhone, and what controls the communications. It is the core of the system.
- kungfumaniac, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2Where is Kenya did you see unlocked iPhone 3Gs for sale?
- inactive, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2Will you be kicked off the internet if i say "falun gong" , "Tiananmen Square" or "melamine poisoned milk" ?
- LeekMibles, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2Yea, so it's true. The 3G iPhones have been unlocked for a while. The DevTeam is slacking. wtf
- LeekMibles, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2The Great(fire)wall of China is so *****. It randomly blocks ***** for no reason. Us foreigners out here gotta use proxies n *****. I'm honestly surprised that digg hasn't been blocked yet.

Not quite. It's free to unlock an iPhone on Optus providing you're on a contract. If you're on prepaid, it's an $80 recharge or an $80 once off fee and they'll unlock it. Vodafone and Telstra charge you $100 or more though.
I really don't see the 3G unlock as a big deal. Mine was unlocked within a week of purchase by calling Optus. It works with any SIM I throw in, but Optus don't care as I have a 24 month contract with them for it. Carriers in AU will unlock knowing they have a revenue stream for 24 months, if not, early termination fees which are usually in excess of that revenue stream. - abajaj2280, on 10/27/2008, -2/+4maybe you should go outside once in a while instead of digging in your mother's basement all day.
- elmetald00d, on 10/27/2008, -1/+3@Flytrap
so what you're saying is the western big countries got ***** once again by capitalism?
Say it ain't so! - etx313, on 10/27/2008, -1/+3Welcome to Digg!!!
- gandhii, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2@ Juaquin: In that situation, what locks you to a certain carrier is the contract you agreed to. Regardless of whether you can use a phone on a different network, you are still entitled to pay their fees or a larger fee to get out of the contract early.
- jh32488, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2jimi hendrix not jimmy
- paulsmith288, on 10/27/2008, -0/+1With all this unlocking going on - does anyone know if they have found a way to modify the itunes database?
I was looking forwards to some wireless sync with linux/amarok with my jailbroken phone. But then found out Apple runined it all in a firmware update by changing the hash of the itunes database file. -
