- dawger, on 06/17/2009, -11/+46Video on a phone? Apple continues to break barriers.
- Senturion, on 06/17/2009, -2/+30Those people who keep sarcastically commenting on how Apple adds features (MMS, video, copy and paste) after they have already been on other phones for a while completely miss the point.
Apple is rarely the first to do anything, they don't lead any market in new features or in new technology, what they do is take existing technology and get it right, that often means waiting until the technology reaches a point where ease of use, quality and speed are good enough to provide a top notch experience.
Apple doesn't care about winning the feature war, they care about winning the sales war and they are doing a pretty good job at that.
There is a big difference between someone implementing a feature first and someone implementing a feature correctly...Apple knows that most consumers care more about quality than they do about spec sheet bragging rights. - dalson, on 06/17/2009, -8/+36Half second of speed is no reason to sign a new contract...
- manlyandy, on 06/17/2009, -0/+23"The mix of new features and a ever-growing App Store will still be potent to new buyers -- but pricing schemes which amount to hundreds more for current owners might give previous early adopters and eager upgraders reason for pause. Ultimately we're not saying it's time to jump ship, but we've come to expect a bit more pedal to the floor from Apple -- you've raised the bar guys, now it's time to jump over it."
Not really such a glowing final recommendation. - Tyr86, on 06/17/2009, -1/+193.0 for iPhone EDGE (1st Gen) http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.in ...

Install! - SPNKrPunk, on 06/17/2009, -0/+16Apparently the battery life is no better than the last version, which is irritating since that's likely one of the biggest complaints everyone has about all smartphones.
The manufacturer that gets a smartphone to last longer than a day with normal use will have a huge advantage. - superpixel, on 06/17/2009, -1/+14No, Apple gave them a review unit because of how many people read them. And the fact that they will do a fair and unbiased job of reviewing the thing. Not everything is a conspiracy against everyone.
- FXNGLAS, on 06/17/2009, -1/+13I can't believe Apple isn't all over AT&T for disabling MMS. This should be a breach of contract. Free the damn thing from AT&T already.
- heyimfromreddit, on 06/17/2009, -3/+14The video looks fantastic for a phone (Click the link on the article for the raw file from the iPhone).
Now compare that to the 15fps jerky video with no sound that you can get on the first 2 iPhones with jailbreaking, and realize WHY video is limited to the 3GS. - inactive, on 06/17/2009, -2/+12it was sarcasm. wow. I guess don't try to be clever on digg today.
- 471776, on 06/17/2009, -0/+9Or just open iTunes, plug the phone in and click check for updates. Worked fine for me.
- psunut5, on 06/17/2009, -0/+7The compass is good because GPS units can use it to judge which way you are facing. The current ones really have no clue on the iphone and often tell you that you are going the wrong way. The voice access is also great if you are driving and dont want to actually use the touch screen. Video recording is also far better than cycorder on a jailbroken phone.
Its worth the upgrade if you want speed and the new apps. - spiffywilco, on 06/17/2009, -0/+7Did I read that right or is MMS 'enabled' but not available?? WTF is the point of that...
I'd check myself, but apparently "activation server cannot be reached" after waiting half an hour to download the update, and backing up my phone. So annoying. - bigkeeperrabbit, on 06/17/2009, -0/+7It would be great for the first 8 hours of the journey while you still had a charge in your battery.
- Radan, on 06/17/2009, -0/+7Pro tip: Your mobile phone is not a frisbee.
- llsethj, on 06/17/2009, -0/+6Has anyone tried tethering on the 3.0 final? Is it different than last week's GM
http://9to5mac.com/iPhone-3G-tethering - inactive, on 06/17/2009, -1/+6lol he's totally right you tools. Apple thinks it still owns your iphone, even though you do. So quit being pussies and just own up to the fact that Apple isn't a perfect company, it cares about your $$ just like every other corporation.
- spiffywilco, on 06/17/2009, -0/+5Yeah, my bad, I should have checked the big fat digg posting about this from gizmodo.
AT&T = Bastards
That is news to no one. - topgigmedia, on 06/17/2009, -0/+5my 3 year old has been using my gen 1 (bought on day 1) for over a year now and my screen doesn't have a single scratch.
- inactive, on 06/17/2009, -0/+5appears that the activation server has crashed.
- superpixel, on 06/17/2009, -2/+7Incredible. I've sat on mine so many times, dropped it face down to go skidding across the concrete, had kids beat the crud out of it, etc... and people want it to stop a bullet. Also, I've seen a lot of people with shattered screens STILL USING the thing. When's the last time you saw that out of the older touchscreens? Would you like one that gave you a pony every week too?
- krisrm, on 06/17/2009, -0/+4If you enjoy it, fine, whatever, but don't say stupid things like "Apple has the best customer service;" just because you've not had problems with it doesn't mean others haven't. And he raises legitimate points about upgrades: they've been milking their users for years, both with OSX updates (Snow Leopard is the first update that doesn't cost $129, but it will still cost that if you're not upgrading from Leopard) and iPhone OS upgrades... why do iPod Touch users have to pay $10? Furthermore, why does jailbreaking even have to exist? it's called JAILbreaking for a reason: Apple has you locked into their little cell as far as what you can and cannot do with your phone. If you're comfy with that, fine, but some people don't like to be told what they can't do with a device that's quite clearly capable of more.
- BenDigital, on 06/17/2009, -1/+5Alt/Option button instead for Mac users
- adorkable81, on 06/17/2009, -0/+4Invest in a protected case and you wont have any problem. I once left mine on top of the car and drove home. The rubber outside the protect case prevent the phone from slipping down. Best investment ever made.
Apparently you never own an iPhone or you are not very good at taking care your phone. Regarding the screen, it's glass, and 100% better than the rest of other phone. - Altotus, on 06/17/2009, -1/+5It's a matter of taste, really. Pre and Apple are both single sourced. The data plan for Pre is cheaper, but Apple's got the edge on installed base, familiarity, brand, and momentum in the market.
I suspect Pre to fail, but not because it's inferior. Fact is that Palm needs Pre and third-party support for it to take off like an Atlas 5 rocket, and that doesn't seem to be happening. Because of Palm's precarious financial situation, they could never afford to put the resources behind it that Apple has behind the iPhone. - hawksfan03, on 06/17/2009, -1/+4historically i would say engadget is in apple's pants, but i have to give them credit for actually criticizing apple and being unbiased for once
- hoju7887, on 06/17/2009, -0/+3Yes, blackberries have been doing this for a while. Not sure about the storm, but blackberries wouldn't be so popular if you had to charge it everyday while on business trips.
- InorganicMatter, on 06/17/2009, -0/+3Does that work with the EDGE iPhone?
- scootinger, on 06/17/2009, -2/+5"Apple has the best customer service. You can walk into any Apple store and get exactly what you want. I never have any problem dealing with Apple rep via the phone or at the store."
All they really care about is your money. Why does Apple charge its users who have spent big $$$ on its products for ridiculous things, like an iPod Touch update, or a 802.11n "enabler" to enable functionality that was intentionally disabled by Apple? Why does Apple intentionally disable hardware functionality, like the 4-finger touch features on older-gen Macbook Pros, or the Bluetooth on certain iPod Touch models? And I wouldn't quite say Apple has the best customer service...I happen to own a MacBook, and haven't received the best customer service on some occasions (i.e. arrogant Genius essentially blaming me for the topcase cracking on my MacBook, a VERY VERY common problem due to poor materials/design.)
"If you do your research and know what you want, no one can tell you what to do. You just choose to be an ignorant prick and assume that Apple/Microsoft put a gun in your head asking you to buy their stuff."
No *****...nobody is telling me what to do! That's why I'm not buying an iPhone, and I encourage others not to either. And I'm certainly not the ignorant prick here.
"I am running iPhone 1st gen, with jailbreak, firmware 3.0 since last week. Apple hasnt done craps to prevent me to enjoy my iPhone (T-mobile customer btw). Regarding MMS, it's the cell phone service (At&T) that doesn't support it, not Apple."
Apple will void your warranty for having jailbroken it, and there's the risk of your phone being bricked if you were to run a firmware update. What do you think about that? As for the MMS, iPhone hackers were able to do it through alternate means...so why couldn't AT&T/Apple find some sort of implementation as the hackers did? Phones have supported MMS for YEARS and YEARS...so why couldn't the first-gen iPhone? - inactive, on 06/17/2009, -3/+6Mobile porn raises my bar so I can break barriers.
- inactive, on 06/17/2009, -0/+3A compass would be a lifesaver in LA. Combine that with Google Maps integration, and now you can realistically park somewhere new and walk around the city without worrying whether you'll ever see your car again. (Though don't park in the south east side, or you may never find your car for other reasons...)
- tonmil, on 06/17/2009, -0/+3You mean DECENT video on a phone. My old Nokia candy bar phone from 2000 did video.
- inactive, on 06/17/2009, -2/+5I hate how reviews include copy/paste/landscape as features of the 3G S, when really, it's going to be available (actually technically already is) for all of the iPhones.
- petro62, on 06/17/2009, -1/+4I guess everyone goes for the easy joke on the compass, but from what I understand there are a lot of cool things this can be used for if applications start taking advantage of it. I thought I remembered that when android was first coming out they showed a demo of Google maps turning along with the user. So if the user turned west the maps also did it on the phone. Essentially showing exactly what the user was looking at. I could be remembering wrong, but if that is so I would think this compass could allow that capability.
- swmbuk, on 06/17/2009, -0/+3I have, I used that page to get the settings for free, over 3G it was amazingly fast on my mac for both bluetooth and USB, will have to try on my PC soon to see if it's as easy.
EDIT: Free tethering on the iPhone at http://help.benm.at/help.php
I also hear it will give Americans MMS early too using the setting provided. - JonesJohnson, on 06/17/2009, -2/+4Cnet's take on the speed of the 3G S:
"For example, Bejeweled 2, which can take up to 12 seconds to load on the iPhone 3G, started in just 5 seconds on the 3G S. Even better, Pocket God went from opening in almost 30 seconds to starting in just 11. The iPhone also started up much quicker than the iPhone 3G--we were up and running in 26 seconds instead of 50 seconds."
Not exactly my favorite site, but those are pretty substantial gains. Gizmodo's and Engadget's videos of the speed differences definitely show why they went the S moniker.
Half second of speed? More like half the time, in most cases. I'll digg you up though -- there really is no reason to re-up unless you're like me and have the 1st generation aluminum beauty which is definitely showing its age. - Meursault, on 06/17/2009, -0/+2Well the new time travel app made this necessary.
- CamperBob, on 06/17/2009, -1/+3My 3G's battery life got a lot better after the first few charge-discharge cycles. I'd expect the same with the 3GS since the hardware is so similar.
- costumemaker, on 06/17/2009, -8/+10spoken like an expert who has never actually laid his hands on a pre. Having had both myself, the pre wins over the iphone.
- Philbert, on 06/17/2009, -0/+2I just hit the Check For Update button and it updated.
- 3thereal, on 06/17/2009, -1/+3Same here with Pre. After the first few days, I only lose about 30% battery in a day of regular use.
- inactive, on 06/17/2009, -1/+3I like how the author spends a paragraph describing Apple's strategy with the 3G S as "retreading the wheel its already got", as if that's any different than what they did with the iMac, the iPod, and every other single product they've ever developed.
But while it's hardly a respectable business strategy, the product speaks for itself in the end. I wouldn't buy it if I had an iPhone already but I do intend to buy this one (or it's only-slightly better successor) eventually. As soon as it's not tethered to the ATT network. - Philbert, on 06/17/2009, -0/+2I installed 3.0. Still wondering why I don't have video on my gen1 iPhone. It was there when the phone was jailbroken, so I know it's possible.
- nipterink, on 06/17/2009, -0/+2the GM build is the same as what came out today
- SteveMax, on 06/17/2009, -1/+3Next thing they'll be offering video chat on a phone, can you imagine that?
- techlinks, on 06/18/2009, -0/+1Why are people digging you down? You're right.
- Philbert, on 06/18/2009, -0/+1One of the reasons apple blows.
- Philbert, on 06/18/2009, -0/+1Why was I dugg down? Tap and hold a link and it pops up 4 buttons, Open, OPEN IN NEW PAGE, Copy, and Cancel. I'm looking at it right now.
- Philbert, on 06/17/2009, -1/+2None of my computers are macs. Well I have OSx86, but I don't connect my iPhone to it.
- wicki1, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1So while it's tough to argue with the package Apple has put together (a stellar device with just enough new to make it nearly perfect), we couldn't help feeling a bit let down by the 3GS.(said Manufacturers)
