- xsecretfiles, on 07/21/2008, -8/+83there is a new iphone?
- RC212V, on 07/21/2008, -7/+26Big f'n deal. Other hot electronics products have sold out in the first week too. Heck, it's still not easy to walk into a store and find a Wii. If iPhones are still selling out 6 months from now, that will be news.
- totorototoro, on 07/21/2008, -2/+20In the time it took you to whine about it here, you could have returned your iPhone and gotten something else.
Don't give me this "2 year lock-in" crap, AT&T gives you 30 days to return it. If you can whine as effectively in real life as you can on DIGG, they won't even charge you restocking.
Go get your Blackberry back. - billjimbob, on 07/21/2008, -20/+37I like how all of the AT&T stores around me aren't getting any more shipments for 21-28 days, but each Apple store is getting them once every few days. So instead of spreading lines around the Apple and AT&T stores, Apple would rather have 100 people lined up outside their store, while they take 25 minutes per person.
***** you, Apple. - ShooterMcGavin, on 07/21/2008, -1/+16I put in my Direct Fulfillment Order at my local AT&T store on release friday (there isn't an Apple Store in the state). I was amazed at how quickly I got it. They shipped it on that following Monday, and I picked it up on Tuesday afternoon. Have been playing with it ever since.
I was really surprised at how smooth everything went, considering that I was the first Direct Fulfillment customer they had and the guy was figuring it out as he went. All in all, I've got no complaints. - gametavern, on 07/21/2008, -4/+15I know I still can't find one. Oh well, I can wait.
- Bhatch514, on 07/21/2008, -0/+8To be honest it obviously does more then just a phone. If it was just a phone then i AGPS and the iPod and the WIFI would be on something else.
- cmorriss, on 07/21/2008, -1/+8AT&T stores have plenty in stock?? Where did you hear that? Based on the macrumors forums, AT&T has been completely sold out the first weekend pretty much everywhere. They started taking direct fulfillment orders and are only about 30% of the way through fulfilling them.
- ShooterMcGavin, on 07/21/2008, -0/+7Sarcasm detector on the fritz, huh?
- blackinthmiddle, on 07/21/2008, -6/+12I've ordered mine through the AT&T store and it'll get there, well, today (since it's now Monday). Hopefully there's no issues with it. The last thing I need is, "Sir, this one's defective. We'll order you another one. See you next month!"
- Anteros, on 07/21/2008, -2/+8You should have done more research before buying, most of these issues were well known before the release day. I don't see the big deal with battery life, just get used to putting into a dock at the end of a day, unless you really are using it more than 6 hours in a day.
- Misaiato, on 07/21/2008, -7/+13Bill and Jabber - you're both idiots. If Apple forces people to come into the Apple store for iPhones the chances are much better they'll sell other products as well.
What Apple products is AT&T carrying besides the iPhone?
You're saying '***** you' to a company publicly owned that uses a highly sought-after product to try and make some tangential sales AND keep it's own retail stores profitable?
Yeah - what the ***** were they thinking trying to make money for their shareholders? (Myself among them) - yikiad, on 07/21/2008, -0/+6i ordered mine on the 11th, and got in on tuesday the 15th at the at&t store.
- lordtyros, on 07/21/2008, -0/+6DON'T TELL ME WHAT I CAN'T DO
- jaredcat, on 07/21/2008, -1/+730 days in california, 15 days everywhere else... There are buyers' remorse protection laws that keep you from being locked in if you don't like it immediately. Even if you bought your phone on iPhone Friday you are still able to return it and get out of your contract for a few more days.
You are not locked in to Apple's MobileMe service for Push e-mail. You can use Exchange as well, and you can get a hosted Exchange account from your office, your carrier, or from about 500 companies offering it (search Google). Also you are not tied to a me.com e-mail address with MobileMe. If you have your own domain name, you can use it.
BB may not use a proprietary connector, but it does use a proprietary driver... You can't charge your BlackBerry on just any ole' USB port. If you don't have the BB driver installed on your computer, it won't charge. And by the way that BB driver is only available for Windows. The only other alternative is to use a BB desktop or travel charger. I think BB and iPhone are evenly matched here.
I have both an iPhone and a BB 8830... While I much rather look at e-mail on my iPhone, I much rather type an e-mail on my BB. I agree with you about that cramped keyboard, but its not unusuable. Disagree with you on the speed. Google Maps on my BB 8830 is MUCH slower than it is on my iPhone. - totorototoro, on 07/21/2008, -3/+8Well *****, markiemarke, most of his whines are ***** he knew (or should have known) before he bought the ***** thing. "No copy and paste"!! NO *****. Do some ***** research before wasting $200+2 year contract on a piece of hardware, for ***** sake!
- wildsnake, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5Why don't you just use the ***** digg filter and filter out Apple
- Dralite, on 07/21/2008, -3/+8I have to disagree... I think it is just a matter of not being able to keep up... when has any electronic that sells like the iphone does (i.e. game consoles) ever stay in stock?
- ShooterMcGavin, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5That's how mine went... I refreshed that damn order page probably 500 times over the weekend hoping to see the "backordered" go away. It finally did Monday sometime. I didn't get confirmation that it had shipped until early Tuesday, the day it was scheduled to be delivered.
Then, I spent Tuesday refreshing the fedex tracking page to see when it was actually delivered to the store.
No, I wasn't very productive at work. - DiggzDE, on 07/21/2008, -1/+51. You won't see any physical payout unless the company decides to issue dividends. And even then, preferred stockholders will retain more rights to that money than you (likely a common stockholder). So there is a chance you may not even see a cent when dividends are paid out if there are enough preferred stockholders waiting around.
2. Apple's decision to under manufacture the iPhone likely had financial reasons behind it. I highly doubt that it was an accident to not produce enough units. This is a financial strategy to boost demand and push various methods of bringing in additional revenue. If you noticed, this release is quite well opposite from the initial one (where iPhones were able to be found days and even weeks after release). They have researchers and surveyors whose job is to figure out demand and then figure out a working game plan for best profit (sometimes straight up initial sales won't yield the most, especially with an upgraded product release and a longer plan can be issued for best profit margins).
3.The board of directors really don't give two ***** about you, Joe Schmoe, the common stock holder. While they are expected to do what is best for the shareholders of the company, they will do whatever they feel is necessary to make the most profit for themselves and people directly associated with the company. So if you believe that their first priority is to "make money for their shareholders" you are sadly mistaken. The anti-trust laws in place to protect shareholders aren't their main concern. As long as they keep doing legal dealings and trying to make a profit for themselves and the company directly, they could give a rats ass about the average shareholder since all you see is them making profit, and for you, that must mean they are doing well. So as long as they are happy, they know the can neglect you, the shareholder, all they need under the guise that it will be beneficial to EVERYONE.
4. To say that Apple is purposely keeping the iPhone at their stores only in order to make "tangential[sic] sales AND keep it's own retail stores profitable" is laughable. You must be forgetting about the massive collection of overpriced computers, media players, ipods, and software that they sell as well. All for a very, let me repeat this, VERY healthy profit. The move to keep the iPhone mainly in Apple stores is not one merely for cash in hand (you seem to forget that they still make a profit off of iPhones sold at AT&T stores as well). There is a financial reason behind the move, sure, but it isn't the main reason. One major cause is control. Selling in-house instead of through a 3rd party offers much better control over sales figures, sales methods, as well as the all important "give me all your personal information for this product" trick. There are other factors involved as well, and while they are a little deeper, I can guarantee that most of them DON'T come down to simply "making money for their shareholders".
Get some financial business savy. Maybe take a class or two on the financial aspects of large corporations and investing. It could help teach you just how unimportant you are in the business world as a common stockholder. - ravage86, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4I understand why you're frusterated. You stumbled into an iPhone discussion and can't seem to find your way out. Well, the quickest and safest way would be to click your browser's "home" button. Unfortunately, none of us here can do it for you. While it may seem, at first glance, that posting a comment is your only option, it unfortunately isn't the solution to your problem. You have better options available to you. I suggest closing your browser all together until you can find someone who is willing to assist you the next time you need to use the internet. Perhaps an internet cafe where the staff could assist you with internet fundamentals, or if that doesn't work, a certified private nurse who has experience with the internet could watch after you and insure you don't run into this problem again. I'm sure, in time, you'll get the hang of it.
- theutopian, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4Why are you buying a phone for it's camera? If you want a good camera, I don't know, buy a freaking camera.
- markiemarke, on 07/21/2008, -1/+5you tell him!
- bdleath, on 07/21/2008, -2/+6I propose we please stop using "all but" to mean "effectively", it technically says the opposite of its intent. I really wish this article just said the "iPhone has effectively sold out in 38 states." I would read that article, instead I am driven to comment on the title.
- lordtyros, on 07/21/2008, -1/+5Do you know how many states there are in the USA? Fifty. So if they are having stock problems in 38 states, do you know what that means? That means that there is available stock in the other states. Do you know how many states that would be. Let's see... fify minus thirty-eight equals twelve! That means that twelve states have no iPhone problems! Do you think it's possible that you live in one of those twelve states? Because there's a decent probability that you do. As a matter of fact, the probability is something like twelve out of fifty. Do you know how I got that? I just took twelve states with iPhones and put it on top of fifty states total. I drew a little line between them. That line means "divided by". Shall I continue...?
- PolkStreet, on 07/21/2008, -2/+5What's an iphone?
- Patrikimo, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3Eh, the website that they're pulling that data from is extremely inaccurate. I bought my iPhone from a place that was sold out according to the website, but wasn't in reality. They usually get shipments in every day. In fact, I happened to be close to a store just when they were taking down the "not available" sign, didn't even have to wait in line at all.
- mookiemoomoo, on 07/21/2008, -1/+4Couldn't agree more Dralite! After all we've seen this happen with a plethora of electronics including the Wii
- bradleyland, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3He's being dug down because no one gives a ***** about his buyer's remorse, and we're tired of hearing people bitch about the same ***** over, and over, and over, and over...
Don't buy the ***** phone if you don't like it.
We are as painfully aware of the reasons many people don't like the phone as we are the deluge of pointless articles about how well the iPhone is selling/performing/saving children/feeding the masses/etc.
It's like an oral diarrhea flinging battle up in here. - sdcarter, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3You remember when your teacher said "There's no such thing as a stupid question?" She was lying. Now, beyond stupid questions, there's something worse... stupid people asking stupid questions. You know that no matter how you answer, they'll never really understand.
- mbourgon, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3I bought an iPhone (2g) from someone who upgraded, since I wanted a iPod Touch. So no cell service, but it works as an iPod and there's several advantages over the Touch.
1) Camera
2) Bluetooth. Not really useful now, but hopefully the drivers will mature
3) Microphone. Again, not useful until a "real" SIP/VOIP app comes out.
4) Speakers. Having used them, that's fricking useful!
The biggest downside? That durn recessed headphone jack. - hansonc, on 07/21/2008, -1/+4I ordered two over the weekend and was told 10-21 business days. I had the choice of buying directly from AT&T and waiting or going to the Apple store in the same mall in the middle of the night and still standing in line for 3-4 hours.... I'm pretty sure if I were standing in line at an Apple store for 3-4 hours I'd end up in a fight with someone so it just seemed easier to order from AT&T
- gourami, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2You're lucky to be getting it today blackinthmiddle. I ordered mine via DF on the 12th and it's still on backorder. It could be another month for all I know.
- Demistate, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2I bought on Friday 7/11 with Direct Fulfillment. They are shipping it today.
I can't imagine what it will be like for all those who bought it over the weekend. I actually went into work late so I could get damn thing before next month. - totorototoro, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2sucks that you can't get Pandora over there-one of the best iPhone apps.
- TheYoshi, on 07/21/2008, -1/+3Let's see, it appears that Apple operates at a 15-20% profit margin: http://finance.yahoo.com/q/ks?s=Aapl Doesn't seem all that horrible to me. Besides, what's wrong with making a profit, isn't that what all businesses are supposed to do? Sheesh
- bradleyland, on 07/21/2008, -2/+4Let's be honest, you don't really own an iPhone, you just wanted to be one of those people that bitch (using the same tired arguments) about it, but figured you could add some credibility by claiming you own one.
It's ok that you don't want an iPhone. We don't care. - m.sandstorm, on 07/21/2008, -1/+3I might go see it on Imax tomorrow night. This movie is going to be HAWT!
- anubis2night, on 07/21/2008, -2/+4Who cares if it's sold out? I for one would rather hear about it working correctly without all the defects.
- drizzlelicious, on 07/21/2008, -1/+3No.
- conquest, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2I ordered mine last Tuesday here in Atlanta and was told "best case Friday". I had hopes it would show up over the weekend but no such luck. I was told yesterday 10 - 21 days. What I want more than anything is a way to track when my phone will be here. AT&T doesn't allow you to track your order online if your transferring your phone number, you have to call an 800 number.
- ravage86, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2You're confused. It's not the "reply" button you want to click, it's the "home" button. If all else fails, try the little X at the top right of the window. I assure you, clicking reply will never stop iPhone discussions from showing up. You need to close the window for that to happen.
- DanielQ, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Yes, but that's worldwide in many, many countries.
- toetagger, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Got me mine I feel fine empty pockets no can dine
- vincentb, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2yeah I think most people haven't seen the smiley...
- AndrewWiggin, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2I'm with mbourgon, the camera alone is enough of a reason to get an iPhone rather than a Touch.
(Obviously if you are a cell phone owner, having the phone part in it is ok too...) - nett3, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2"all but" meaning "everything except"?
So they are everything except sold out? I'm confused. - LiquidSword, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2where was this??
I wish i hadn't registered mine now with Car Phonewarehouse on last Friday... They seemt to be taking ages to get new stock! - digitalpencil, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2^ best. comeback. ever..
- wildsnake, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2My iPhone takes clear pictures too. MP has nothing to do with quality unless you are printing larger prints. The lens is what makes a better picture, not the megapixels
