iPhone 3G Launch Date Confirmed!
gizmodo.com — We all suspected it, but now it is confirmed: sources close to the 3G iPhone launch have told Gizmodo that Apple will announce their new model at the WWDC Keynote on June 9th. The second-generation iPhone will be available worldwide right after the launch, and not at year's end, as previously thought.

- ChickenNugNug, on 05/20/2008, -8/+298All this article says is that a 'source' told Gizmodo a 3G iPhone is being released in June.
Um, yea. We kinda knew that already.- yokozuka, on 05/20/2008, -18/+3RTA: "We all suspected it, but now it is confirmed." It also has details about the exact dates and worldwide availability.
- ChickenNugNug, on 05/20/2008, -4/+70Apple hasn't officially announced it, so it's still not officially confirmed. We all knew it would be coming in June, because lots of these "sources" have been saying so. This is just another, except they glued a date on.
- speedyrev, on 05/20/2008, -0/+39You gotta love a rumor that confirms a rumor!
- kaifanun, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1This is like the same type of announcements when MacWorld sends out a news press release week before the conference that Steve Jobs will be the keynote speaker for the MacWorld.
um yea, we kinda new that... - hermslice, on 05/20/2008, -4/+5First off i dont trust Gizmodo, so ***** them. second i have been hearing rumors that it was coming out in june for a while. infact the date i heard last was the 12th of june.
Can anyone confirm or deny - migitalwarfare, on 05/20/2008, -0/+5i can confirm AND deny your june 12th date, i have inside sources that support both. take your pick

- dyranios2, on 05/20/2008, -7/+82lol what a joke, there is no more weight to this confirmation then there was any of the others that confirmed it would be announced at WWDC, it's just a sensationalist title and it's working a treat. The genius over at gizmondo that thought of this must be laughing at the way all the chumps get hot and bothered over headlines like that.
- maxthreepwood, on 05/20/2008, -5/+3No kidding. Maybe you should read the article.
- yokozuka, on 05/20/2008, -3/+4The "genius" talked two to sources who are in the organization team for the launch in two european countries.
Dates are solid.
Yours truly,
The "genius"- newsheatdotcom, on 05/20/2008, -5/+3What language is "two?" Is that some sort of new l33t language?
- dyranios2, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Yeah good old reliable "guys on the inside" right?
- clak, on 05/20/2008, -39/+38Okay, so we get the 3G phone, with 3rd party apps and maybe GPS. Okay. There are some great solutions for third party batteries, like the lithium polymer battery shaped into a sleeve that the company called Mophie makes. http://www.mophie.com/collections/batteries. So what else can the Apple haters complain about?
Okay, copy & paste and maybe, MMS, if a third party doesn't do it first. I'm convinced that Apple is never going to do MMS because it's redundant feature when pared with e-mail and Apple doesn't do redundant features, but okay, copy & paste and MMS. It that it? AT&T? Okay, copy & paste, MMS, and locked to AT&T. If that's all the haters can complain about, then we've got it made. No more whining right? What's that you say? You'll find a way to bitch as long as Apple exists? Come on, just shut up already. Pretty please?- Tyr7BE, on 05/20/2008, -21/+3Apple apologists. I will bitch about Apple apologists as long as Apple exists. Does that answer your question?
- NeoCortex, on 05/20/2008, -9/+11The "locked to AT&T" one is pretty big to me. I won't be getting an iPhone so long as it is an AT&T exclusive, simply because AT&T service sucks where I live.
- Kinnkster, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2Is unlocking it so hard?
- cthellis, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1To get access to what, precisely...? T-Mobile? o_O That's unlikely to improve anything.
- Kinnkster, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2Is unlocking it so hard?
- nbcaffeine, on 05/20/2008, -6/+2I can't have it yet? Does that count?
- SeamusVibe, on 05/20/2008, -3/+5I'll say one of the big one's for me is stereo bluetooth.
- Altotus, on 05/20/2008, -1/+4Battery killer, that. No, for me it's not voice dialing.
- Altotus, on 05/20/2008, -1/+4Battery killer, that. No, for me it's not voice dialing.
- PiGuy, on 05/20/2008, -10/+10We don't hate Apple. We hate the whiney fanboys who don't shut up.
- carbog, on 05/20/2008, -2/+7Apple may not be redundant, but your comment certainly was. How many times did you really have to say "copy and paste." Oh and Okay's don't really work in writing... they're just annoying.
- anemptygun, on 05/20/2008, -2/+4my hair is a bird. your argument is invalid.
- gothicform, on 05/20/2008, -4/+7If MMS is a redundant feature how come my phone has received some 20 of them in the past week? It's a pretty big reason that people don't use iPhones in Europe. Basically every phone supports MMS and those that don't you can log online and look at the MMS, it's not possible to email a phone number though, only an email address. Until Apple stop thinking they know best and realise that the rest of the world does things differently to how they like their iPhone sales will continue to be poor outside of the USA.
- nuttyphilt, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1I don't think MMS is a big reason that people don't use iPhones in Europe, it's merely an inconvenience. Here in the UK the main reason is the price. Why would you spend £300 on a phone (plus an 18 month contract) when you can get any other phone for free?
- JackHarkness, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1You just happen to belong to one of the small clusters that use MMS. Here in Australia the only people who use MMS are the douches who pass along the sort of funny clips that should be viewed on youtube. IMHO it would be infinitely better to send a youtube link(via sms or email) so it can be watched at a decent resolution.
- mangosinslo, on 05/20/2008, -1/+5it's not redundant.. many people don't have email on their phones and if they want to send picture messages, it is pretty much impossible. it's just stupid of apple to not offer that.
- JackHarkness, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1I've never been, nor heard of anyone, in a situation that required the need to MMS a picture(though i can imagine it being useful if you're having trouble describing something to someone), especially seeing that sending via blue tooth is quicker, and most importantly, free.
- andreo, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Patch the text messaging. I hate having to wish that nothing bad is texted to me if I let someone look at the phone. I should not only have the option of deciding how and if the phone tells me there's a text message. But I should be able to decide who's messages pop up on the screen and who's doesn't. And I should be able to do this without jailbreaking the phone.
And yeah, I know about the passcode trick where the message doesn't show up, but it still pops up that I have a message. - JBabin3xB, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2I'm surprised fanboys didn't ***** themselves when apple started making their products black
- TheCash, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1Could you say "okay" one more time? Super.
- seeman, on 05/20/2008, -16/+35It's amazing how Apple can generate all of this buzz by just shutting the ***** up. In some ways Apple reminds me of that utterly popular kid who barely grunts and stares off into the distance when talking to woman, while they all madly, unreservably fall for them.
- doubledoh, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4This only happens in movies, by the way.

EDIT: and that picture is just a mock up, it's not an official release picture- maxthreepwood, on 05/20/2008, -5/+5A rumor from two actual people working in the actual launch IS confirmed. RTA.
- gerryk, on 05/20/2008, -1/+3Actually, no... only an official statement is 'confirmation' anything else is 'hearsay'.
Anyhow, I spoke to 4 people, all of whom work on the iPhone, and they say that it's not coming for 6 months... see what I did there?- zzz@tkz, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1WHAT!? 6 months is soooooo long :(.

- reverland, on 05/20/2008, -10/+41Hopefully AT&T learned its lesson and subsidizes the phone to new customers. I don't care how cool this phone is, I won't be locked into a 2 year contract and pay full price for a phone just for the privilege of using an Apple phone.
- saboola, on 05/20/2008, -3/+8The people that are modding you down obviously own the first version of iphone and are pissed that AT&T might subsidize the new one. Your point is a good one.
- GeauxLSU, on 05/20/2008, -1/+3But, but, but then Apple won't get their cut!
Face it....the reason it isn't discounted is because Apple is taking their monthly kickback. IMO, it will not change with a new and improved iphone! - MadKennyP, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2AT&T seems to have done fine with the current pricing model. Just sayin'.
- Warblade, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2AT&T did pretty well even though they didn't subsidize the phone. So what "lesson" is it that they should have learned?
- kanningt, on 05/21/2008, -1/+3You don't have to be locked in to a two year contract. AT&T has a GoPhone option that lets you cancel every 2 months. n00b.
- sleeknerve, on 05/21/2008, -1/+1not with the iphone
- johnpaul191, on 05/20/2008, -3/+22seriously..... i don't expect to see the headline "confirmed" till it's on apple.com, att.com, or somebody hears it from an Apple event.
i'm not saying i don't believe that a new iPhone will be announced/released in the next month, but Gizmodo posting a launch date for an unannounced product is hardly confirmation of anything. - i4unews, on 05/20/2008, -10/+13G iPhone still further out than we want to believe?
http://www.i4u.com/article17422.html - zomgorly, on 05/20/2008, -12/+5Ok since we know when the 3G model is released, next question when are they going to release a SD card slot model?
- zongamin, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2Never - now piss off.
- SteveMax, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Yeah, MicroSD is much better for phones. Who'd put a big SD slot on a phone nowadays?
- zongamin, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2Never - now piss off.
- freshyill, on 05/20/2008, -1/+66I don't think "confirmed" means what Gizmodo thinks it means. This is more in "a guy told me" territory.
- yokozuka, on 05/20/2008, -14/+2Actually, it's not. Dude, confirmed means that we got confirmation, like when we got confirmation that O2 and Telefonica were going to be the carrier in the UK and Spain when everyone was talking Vodafone *****.
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/cellphones/jobs-meeting ...
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/notag/apple-and-o2-to-l ...
When someone who is actually organizing the events for the launch tells you the confirmed dates, that's confirmed, even if Apple hasn't announced it yet.

- lsalih, on 05/20/2008, -2/+5Should I buy one now?
- johnpaul191, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4i know you are being funny, but there are no iPhones for sale anywhere (except ebay). apple stores, apple.com, att.com have all been sold out. *maybe* a few individual AT&T stores have one or two around, but *supposedly* stock is so low that people breaking or losing their iPhones are kind of stuck.
There are some on Ebay, but as far as returns/exchanges it seems like stock really has dried up.

- pyper, on 05/20/2008, -10/+9the real joke here is Jizmodo, they lost all credibility after there other "iPhone" announcement. That and the fact they will post any crap non tech related.

Sometimes they post something not tech related, if you aren't interested then don't click on it.
I mean, the AUDACITY of posting whatever they want on their own website.

- SantaDuJuan, on 05/20/2008, -0/+6Any news on the price and or prices of the original iPhones?
- zongamin, on 05/20/2008, -5/+1Are you ***** serious?
- dorkdork777, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Yes. The original iPhone should become cheaper, for those who don't need 3G.
- phutcherso, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1For anyone following the story of the 3g iphone... the original iphone stocks have been seriously dwindling in the past month. If they were continuing the production the amount of stock in the store would continue to hold steady. They probably won't make the edge model anymore. As Apple has done in the past they do not continue to produce the previous generation of a product.
I'd also like to know who doesn't need 3g???- SteveMax, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1People living in countries where 3G doesn't exist?
- bolthead88, on 05/20/2008, -0/+0jobs thought nobody needs a 3g iphone... the battery life is going to suck... 3g doesn't have a lot of coverage... wi-fi is still going to be better and at&t is going to let us use there hot spots.... so between star-bucks and mcdonalds and the fact that edge is coool.... I don't need 3g... but I do need a gps and a fron facing camera for video chat, enhanced blue tooth... more memory... flash ...
- zongamin, on 05/20/2008, -5/+1Are you ***** serious?
- ThantiK, on 05/20/2008, -9/+3Has anyone noticed that this comes on really quickly on the heels of the hardware-based iPhone hack that was released a couple months ago? - the ONLY reason apple gives a crap about 3G speeds, is because it's a good excuse to release a new iPhone that closes that hardware vulnerability. They couldn't care less about you guys, they just don't want people hacking the iPhone.
- Erkie, on 05/20/2008, -0/+0So? I still get a 3G iPhone! Woo!

- yabos, on 05/20/2008, -1/+32Unless it's confirmed by Apple then it's not confirmed, even if it's fairly likely to happen.
- pilot101, on 05/20/2008, -1/+9man I'm crossing my fingers that ATT will subsidize the iphone by 200 dollars like rumoured making the model cost only 199
- fixthecomments, on 05/20/2008, -0/+0I think they will.
Think of the perfect storm unleashed by Apple if they release their "alpha" iPhone model at a reasonable price point with a year of hyper-hype and beta testing by early adopters behind them.
Sure, they could milk the premium and keep it relatively niche, or sell them to everyone like they do with iPods.
BOOM! indeed.
(add the enterprise features, the app store etc. and they can OWN the mobile world) - ssavoy, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1I doubt it for the simple reason they still want their customers to look cool with one. I think its great that it MIGHT happen, but I don't think they want a flocking stream of Voyager owners either.
- fixthecomments, on 05/20/2008, -0/+0I think they will.
- w3v3, on 05/20/2008, -3/+7Does worldwide include Australia?

/sarcasm- djstranger, on 05/20/2008, -1/+0Thanks for making me spit out soup all over my keyboard. Funny stuff!
- itsthebrod, on 05/20/2008, -19/+14First of all, buried as inaccurate. A "confirmation" for me requires direct confirmation from either Apple or AT&T. Anything else is still speculation and rumor.
Second of all, big ***** deal. I know many of you are masturbating feverishly while dreaming of a 3G iPhone, but seriously, why is a phone that's technologically as far behind as the iPhone still making tech news on Digg? Every other new phone is EXPECTED to be 3G by now, but now that Apple's phone is finally catching up to the times, it's front-page news. Unbelievable.- Mavital, on 05/20/2008, -4/+9Do you own an iPhone? Ever handled one? After owning mine for two weeks, I stand by the statement that if I threw mine in a swimming pool, I would IMMEDIATELY go and buy another -- and no, I don't have very much money sitting around. Why? Because never before has a single device been able to do so many things... and that's before hacking the thing. Once you get installer app on the phone, you can practically teleport and slow time with the damn thing.
- digital11, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2Teleport and slow time.... Mmmmmm... *Drool*
Hopefully those are included in iPhone 3.0. - itsthebrod, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1Yes, I have handled it. I was not impressed. The touchscreen is nice but for a phone lacking in *so* many other areas (GPS, MMS, 3G, etc.) it's hard to overlook such basic features. Sorry, but I'd rather keep buttons on my phone if it means keeping with present times in cell phone technology.
- digital11, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2Teleport and slow time.... Mmmmmm... *Drool*
- Mavital, on 05/20/2008, -4/+9Do you own an iPhone? Ever handled one? After owning mine for two weeks, I stand by the statement that if I threw mine in a swimming pool, I would IMMEDIATELY go and buy another -- and no, I don't have very much money sitting around. Why? Because never before has a single device been able to do so many things... and that's before hacking the thing. Once you get installer app on the phone, you can practically teleport and slow time with the damn thing.
- dizzy113, on 05/20/2008, -2/+2So is this article saying it's going to be released in the US on June 9th? Right after the words are spoken we all supposed to run to Apple and ATT stores? I'm not the biggest Apple fan, but I do really want the iPhone and have been waiting forever for the new one to come out so I really hope it is less than a month away because my SLVR is just not that cool anymore (or that useful). Not that this really means anything, but I setup a poll http://whenwillapple.com/saywhen/iphone because I had some time to kill and June 9th does have the most votes so we shall see.
- gavroche, on 05/20/2008, -0/+11Canada
- tiuk, on 05/20/2008, -1/+4Seriously. Just give us a damned date. I don't even care so much about the phone as I do what kind of effect it will have on Rogers' data plans.
- BryanG412, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4I blame Canada
- optophobia, on 05/20/2008, -5/+201 - confirmed my ass.
2 - predicted correctly ? probably. Anyone who has half a brain could and does predict that there will be an iphone release after the WWDC.
3 -"a very close friend ' I call BS
Why do people keep digging these stories.
I can CONFIRM that the author is a *****. How do I know this ? A very very close friend told me.
Oh and you need proof like a DATE to believe me ? Ok he is a ***** TODAY- sublimemind, on 05/20/2008, -4/+1I live in Cupertino and my dad is on the 3g team (business applications), June 9th is the day.
- Shatfacedpanda, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4Im dropping my Verizon plan like a newborn when this finally comes out. Until then Im stuck with the RAZR/paper weight.
- cnicodemus, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2Who didn't know the 3G was coming in June?
- hiro, on 05/20/2008, -1/+9So... not confirmed then...
- BloggerJohn, on 05/20/2008, -1/+27How is this confirmation? Buried.
- ssj2119, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2So I will be getting this - I'm interested about the new sales policies... maybe so we can buy the phone offline so you can use any sim card, like EVERY OTHER PHONE?
- gklitt, on 05/20/2008, -1/+3Last time around they couldn't release the first generation iPhone immediately after the announcement because FCC testing would ruin the secret. This time around, what's the difference? I find it hard to believe that any FCC documentation on the new iPhone wouldn't have been uncovered if it existed.
- DaviDaviDaviD, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Apple can hold back the FCC document for a set period of time. Plus this iPhone is pretty much the same as the last one minus one or two things so they testing would not take as long.
- friday04, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1I feel the same way. I mean, I don't know the rules and DaviDaviDaviD might be correct. But still, it seems feasible.
I wrote something to that effect before I read the Digg article and comments.

- sonicbliss, on 05/20/2008, -3/+5I think if Apple do this and just let carrier's like O2 etc. discount it and give the phone *free*, its guna be a phenomenal success. I know loads of people impressed with similar gadgets e.g. samsung phones that will be blown away by it. And loads who bitch about the iphone just bitch cause its too expensive for them so they try find flaws with it. But no doubt it is simply amazing even in its current form, and with 3G, GPS and features like Bluetooth and messaging properly working, with the SDK out too and Enterprise support I can see it being ridiculous. It will be a great way to spread the Apple brand, the Apple love will spread to other products like macbooks- they should have done it from the beginning, then again, they could have planned this and make it a coveted and yet loathed item, then all sudden release it free on carriers and BOOM! Everyone's got one!
Ha, lets hope they actually do it... - masterjjx, on 05/20/2008, -2/+0if it didn't come from steve job mouth then it's just bs but god i hoped it true
- iPee, on 05/20/2008, -9/+1OMFG i just jizzed my pants!!!!!! oh jee gholy the iphone with 3G !!!! oh wow....i cant wait for the blazing speeds of interwebs on my phone.....
- DaviDaviDaviD, on 05/20/2008, -2/+2Very clever advertising once again by Apple, manipulating the Internet tech sources. I will be buying one though ;)
- okaroleo, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1The internets never lie!!!
- XternalHD, on 05/20/2008, -4/+2Stupid looking camera thing on the front of the phone. I'll just stick to my iPhone, I don't need 3G speeds.
- jmcool, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2I think everyone knew this a long time ago because of the sdk. Searching sdk code is good.
http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/08/iphone-3gs-base ... - 0260, on 05/20/2008, -8/+3oh boy oh boy oh boy. apple once again shocks the world with 4 year old technology
- Zippo, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1I hope to god Bell Aliant gets in on this for Canada... they're not the best phone company in the world, but are far better than Rogers in terms of network coverage...
- DeFex, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3ever heard of "rogers-at&t" so that would be no iphone for bell then.
rogers will bring sucking to a whole new level when they get this phone.- Omis, on 05/20/2008, -0/+0Rogers is probably going to sell refurbished 1.0 iPhones at 2.0 prices.
- DeFex, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3ever heard of "rogers-at&t" so that would be no iphone for bell then.
- camaroz06, on 05/20/2008, -2/+1Hmmmm...I wonder if I should send back the phone I bought this week before the 14 day trial is up.
- Zapita, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1yes you should, this is not confirmation directly from apple, BUT, we -know- they will show "something" during the keynote in June, and they make the products available right after so you just have to wait a few days ;)
- kyle212, on 05/20/2008, -9/+7Great... an iPhone with 3G, because pretty much every other phone out there doesn't have this feature
- Kavalier, on 05/20/2008, -1/+0MAYBE I'll buy one now.
- Merrick015, on 05/20/2008, -2/+0On June 9th God will bless/curse us all with second coming of Jesu.. er the iPhone...? *looks dryly at his large stock of bottled water and canned goods* ..*****
