- serif69, on 06/23/2009, -7/+108This will likely be unpopular on digg, but by comparison:
Palm Pre: 50k-100k units sold over the first week, a record for Sprint. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124447397245194429 ...
TMobile G1: 1M units sold in ~6 months http://www.informationweek.com/blog/main/archives/ ...
It took Apple almost 3 months to reach 1M of the original iPhone http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2007/09/10iphone.h ...
It's crazy that Apple can sell that many of the 3GS in 3 days. - badqat, on 06/22/2009, -16/+85No shock here. Despite moaning about how the 3G S looks exactly like the 3G, this is the first "real" upgrade Apple has done to the iPhone.
Way less carriers than the 3G launched on, way less hoopla - but still a million sold. Sounds about right.
Thus far, I'm digging mine. - s0ny, on 06/22/2009, -2/+67The scary thing for other manufacturers to consider is: that 1 million doesnt include any of the $99 3G sales.
While I was in the Apple store at least 15 people purchased the 3G instead of the 3GS. I wonder what the total iPhone sales were for the weekend. - Lionhart, on 06/23/2009, -2/+48Cause Edge to 3G wasn't an upgrade.
- SPNKrPunk, on 06/23/2009, -5/+45Its funny how Digg's comments give us such a distorted view of a product't popularity. If one were to read many of the comments in several of the most dugg 3GS stories, one would think the 3GS would be a complete flop!
- t0ny, on 06/23/2009, -1/+35Also the added gps was not an upgrade too.
- inactive, on 06/23/2009, -4/+37I bought one, it's the most solid phone I've ever owned.
I was on the subway in Boston earlier today - and I think a few hundreds of thousands of those people take the same train, it's almost creepy. - mysql101, on 06/23/2009, -0/+27I read about the new iphone 3gs. I wasn't impressed. I had no intention of getting it.
Then I watched some video of it in action. It is a lot faster. Beyond the "400mhz vs 600mhz" numbers, applications load a lot faster because the cpu has quite a bit more cache and the system has double the ram. A lot of the pauses in the UI that I found in the original are gone. Additionally, even through I'm going from "2g" to "3g", the actual speed of websites are increased even versus normal 3g iphone due to the faster system. Web pages load 30-70% faster because of it.
Ultimately I upgraded from my original iphone because:
1. I get real GPS.
2. 32 gigs over my 8 gig unit.
3. Graphics chip is 7x faster than the older phones.
4. Video recording is very useful
5. Better batt life
6. I told the AT&T rep I was going to cancel, and they offered me $10 off, so my phone plan still costs $70.
If I was a iphone 3g owner, I would have a much harder time deciding if the upgrade is worth it. I think in that position, I would pass on the upgrade, but be envious
I also understand why an owner of other phones might not see why the hype of the iphone - I never really wanted the iphone. It wasn't till I saw a coworker with one that I asked to check it out. Apple has it's ***** together with UI design and making a phone useful.
The biggest drawback of the 3gs is that it's difficult to explain why it's worth upgrading to. Just saying it's "faster" is not going to give you a true picture.
PS: You can do true HDR with it! (Here's a ***** example I made) http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid ... - leontes, on 06/23/2009, -3/+23I have it: I love it. I upgraded my beat up 1st generation iPhone. And I have to say the S is for smokin'. It's fast and snappy compared to my old phone. Also, I did my first run with the nikeplus this evening. I'm annoyed that site is flash only so I can't view it on the phone itself.
I'm glad I made the upgrade and the first video I shot were baby skunks in my neighborhood. They make scary noises. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxOH3-skNSM - jeffmon, on 06/23/2009, -0/+19Sure, but you're gonna be forced to use VCAST. =)
- MacEnvy, on 06/23/2009, -3/+21Complainers are always louder than satisfied customers, even if less numerous.
- Flytrap, on 06/23/2009, -0/+16What are you smoking... the sales are of actual 3GS handsets not OS3.0 software downloads!
Did you even read the article! - dagamer34, on 06/23/2009, -4/+20It launched in 6 countries though (6 large countries too).
The Palm Pre has launched in one country and was supply limited. The G1 has launched in 3 countries so far and mid-way between those 6 months were leaks of arguably much better Android phones.
Gotta look at the whole picture! - magamiako, on 06/23/2009, -0/+16The iphone has been the best $200 I've ever spent on a piece of technology.
- Nothlit, on 06/23/2009, -0/+15I felt the same way about the battery the first few days I had my iPhone 3G, but it has since gotten better. This is likely because 1) you will eventually stop messing around with it constantly, and 2) once the battery has been through a couple of full charge/discharge cycles it seems to last a little bit longer.
- MScrip, on 06/23/2009, -1/+15>> "I don't understand why people are getting antsy in the pantsy for a slightly better version of the same phone"
Because people like the iPhone... and the 3GS has more capacity and faster hardware.
Why *wouldn't* they get excited for a better version of the phone they like? - mova, on 06/23/2009, -0/+14I switched. The service is not as good at Verizon IMO, but man the phone blows away my Verizon LG...
- Flytrap, on 06/23/2009, -1/+14I have the iPhone 3G, but will be upgrading to the 3GS as soon as it is released in South Africa (sometime in July, I understand) for the better camera, voice dial, more RAM and greater speed.
I often use my 3G to remote desktop to Windows servers (when I am nowhere neare a PC) and it often runs out of memory and runs sooo sloooow. I am looking forward to the 3GS performance imporvements.
I only wish that the screen was at least VGA resolution (preferably SVGA), but I realise that lighting up all those pixels would slow things down and eat into battery life... so it is a compromise situation.
I can't wait for multi-core ARM CPUs next year (should be on the Pre as well)! - mrBitch, on 06/23/2009, -1/+13@ srodolf, RE: ".. You also have to take into account that Apple counts iPhones in the supply chain as "sold".
No, you're confusing yourself with Microsoft's "sold" figures for their Xbox, Microsoft are the masters of "supply chain stuffing".
These iPhone figures are real and actual hardware units sold. - itsbob, on 06/23/2009, -1/+13Are you saying the millions of iPhone owners out there are all homosexuals?
You have got some serious issues - MScrip, on 06/23/2009, -2/+14>> "that 1 million doesnt include any of the $99 3G sales."
Yeah, that's crazy.
Existing customers complained because they couldn't upgrade to the 3GS in the middle of their contract. So they either ponied up the dough and bought the 3GS anyway... or most of these are new customers! Holy crap! - morningmatters, on 06/23/2009, -2/+14I am ashamed to admit, but I am one of the suckers who finally fell for Job's reality distortion field. I switched from verizonwireless to at&t just to get this phone.
The iPhone 3Gs is good so far. There are tons of great, free apps. My only gripes are the battery and reception. If you play around with your phone constantly like I did (right after I bought it) you will run out of battery in a few hours even after a full charge. The reception was weird. I was sitting in a restaurant and the reception went from 3 bars to 0 bars to emergency only. I guess I will switch back to VerizonWireless when it will offer a better phone but I for now I am stuck with AT&T. - Galaxylander, on 06/23/2009, -2/+14Oh my god, why do so many of you fall for the multitasking gimmick? You have to enter a menu and swipe to change apps anyway! That's exactly the same as pressing the ***** home button and picking a different app! Especially with push notifications!
- inactive, on 06/23/2009, -0/+11lol oh god, that would make me want to blow my brains out.
- TheBigBad, on 06/23/2009, -3/+12and haters will be haters.
- Qumahlin, on 06/23/2009, -4/+13Which would be a feat if they were locked to one carrier
- leontes, on 06/23/2009, -0/+9It's there automatically. I hadn't seen that before.
- MScrip, on 06/23/2009, -0/+9Wow! Great color on the 3GS! It looks a little soft... but it's good enough for a cell phone camera!
The iPhone is gonna be the most popular camcorder on Youtube shortly... with its instant editing and direct upload to Youtube.
"The best camera is the one you have on you at the moment" - aussieNickuss, on 06/23/2009, -0/+9Did you put the "Uploaded using iPhone" thing in the description, or is it there automatically?
- USER1236, on 06/23/2009, -2/+11I recorded this live performance of St. Vincent on my iPhone 3GS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rg4cMeSo2o4
great audio quality!! - leontes, on 06/23/2009, -0/+8I just uploaded another video, this one emailed in : I think the color and picture quality is improved if one doesn't use the iphone compression. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vq_U3G6Tpx0
- MScrip, on 06/23/2009, -0/+8>> "It's the software that matters"
Don't forget all of the hardware gadgets that will use the iPhone dock connector.
Love it or hate it... the iPhone is a proven platform with support across the board. Auto makers support it, hardware manufacturers support it and software developers support it.
Despite its shortcomings... the iPhone is a huge platform for the future. - mrBitch, on 06/23/2009, -2/+10@ mysql101, RE: " .. That's exactly my experience with my first apple product, a MacBook Pro... until you use it for everything you don't understand how much better OSX is an OS over Windows (which is what I have been using since the days of PC-DOS and MS-DOS). - dagamer34, on 06/23/2009, -0/+8Hardware isn't really what matters. The Pre and the iPhone 3G S have extremely similar hardware. It's the software that matters, and with the iPhone 3G S, hopefully developers will take advantage of the advances to make something really great.
- Spamcan, on 06/23/2009, -2/+9Amazing, I'm filling the latest version of Dr. Ive's Portable Telegraph Machine with takies and phonograph recordings at this very moment!
- SRSco, on 06/23/2009, -3/+10How is this scary again? David Lynch movies and nuclear war scare me. Phone handset sales don't. We probably don't see eye to eye on a lot of things.
- Texa, on 06/23/2009, -0/+7It's difficult to download an iPhone from the Internet.
- Flytrap, on 06/23/2009, -2/+8What is even more scary is that when the original iPhone 3G racheted up 1 million unit sales over the launch week end last year, it was being launched in 55 countries symultaneously... this time sales hit the 1 million units mark with a US only launch (the rest of the world follows in July).
A poll conducted by Gartner indicated that 54% of 3GS buyers were upgrading from an existing iPhone (it does not say which one) and that 12% were switching from a blackberry (up from 6% of the 1st weekend buys of the original 3G).
A different blogger indicated that as the hardware differences between the latest crop of smart phones become less significant (he looked at the Pre, iPhone, G1, and N97), the key differenciator would increasingly be the seemless integration of an accessories and content ecosystem around the handset (which is how the iPod won even though it never had the best feature set) as well as the richness third party software portfolio. - MacParrot, on 06/23/2009, -0/+6Who knew R3publican was an idiot?
Oh wait...just about everyone - Plopfish, on 06/23/2009, -4/+10I really don't get why the $100 price drop is such a big deal. The vast majority will spend over $100 every month to use the device, and all spend close to it. I personally think the differences are well worth the $100.
Eh... I'm just jealous that $80-ish/month its still a bit too steep for me. - knute5, on 06/23/2009, -0/+6Did you use the "Share to YouTube" feature? It's a night-and-day improvement over some of the other videos (no offense) you put up, when it comes to the audio quality. Very impressive.
- JackGrinnan, on 06/23/2009, -0/+6I literally waited 25 seconds.
- MScrip, on 06/23/2009, -0/+6You could carry an iPod Touch if you're only gonna to access the internet indoors.
But most people who buy an internet-capable phone want to access the internet everywhere. - diggitupyall, on 06/23/2009, -2/+8Douches will be douches.
- dagamer34, on 06/23/2009, -0/+6There are a couple of facts to consider:
a) The iPhone 3G had a pretty tight supply last year. I don't think they made enough. This year they launched in fewer countries, which means less of a logistial challenge and makes it easier to get the phones that WERE made into the hands of consumers. You must factor in that shipping phones to 55 countries takes quite a bit of time it Apple wanted a reasonable number available in each country.
b) While most early adopter iPhone (2007) users upgraded to the iPhone 3G, almost anyone still using the original iPhone most likely upgraded to the 3G this weekend. I think there were more than enough reasons to do so. Also, Apple still seems to be finding people who didn't have an iPhone before to sell one to. - dagamer34, on 06/23/2009, -1/+76 countries got the iPhone 3G S on June 19th. And those 6 countries were some of the largest where iPhone sales were possible.
- inactive, on 06/23/2009, -0/+6The moral of this story: Tell the AT&T rep you're going to cancel.
- MScrip, on 06/23/2009, -1/+6I agree. And here's an example of why multitasking can be a *bad* thing...
I know people with Blackberries who don't even know what multi-tasking is. I pick up their phone and the map app is still running with a map from a trip 2 months ago. GPS is running too. And the calculator app has been running for weeks. And that video clip they showed me last week? It's still open in the background too.
Multi-tasking may be great for someone who know how to use it. But for most people... it's just killing battery life by keeping a dozen apps running. Pressing the END button does NOT close the app on a Blackberry.
Maybe that's why Apple left it out...
With the exception of things like Pandora... multi-tasking on the iPhone isn't really needed. Push notifications are the key here. Why keep AIM running all day when you just need it to tell you when you get a new message?
/Blackberry user who closes apps when I'm done with them... :) - itsbob, on 06/23/2009, -0/+5Oh, I see... your a 12 year old.
Sorry, I thought I was asking a person with a real opinion a question.
You kids are so cute nowadays with your little cuss words. - mrBitch, on 06/23/2009, -0/+5Fair enough, but when it comes to mobile web browsing, iPhone walks all over Blackberry in that department...
http://edition.cnn.com/2009/TECH/06/18/smartphone. ...
" ... When it comes to mobile Web surfing, the iPhone seems to be the king. A recent report by AdMob found Apple's device generated 65 percent of mobile HTML browsing, a statistic that didn't surprise Siegler.
"The Web browser on the iPhone has been up to this point far superior to what it is on some of the other phones out there," he said. "The great thing about the iPhone is that you don't have to have a mobile specific page. You can look at the regular page and just see it perfectly fine." -
