- WestonP, on 09/15/2008, -5/+66Still seeing random crashes from Safari and a couple of apps, but battery life seems to be better during light use, apps install/update faster, iTunes sync is faster, and I like the changes to the iPod app.
All I want now is:
- Safari that doesn't crash
- MMS support (ie picture messages)
- Tethering
- More complete IPSEC VPN support - noPCtoday, on 09/16/2008, -4/+52good! most bugs are fixed, now.. add new features:
Copy paste,
Voice dialing,
GPS voice navigation,
Push Notification,
Bacon Maker. - piano08man, on 09/15/2008, -5/+49It definitely addressed my biggest concerns... would be nice to see copy and paste yet though.
- iPanda, on 09/16/2008, -6/+44if you have to ask, its probably too complicated for you...
- that1bander, on 09/15/2008, -7/+40It fixes A LOT. I've still got a few complaints, though...
- jtbell04, on 09/16/2008, -6/+38- Steve Jobs to give birth to an entire herd of unicorns.
- Subriot, on 09/16/2008, -1/+31- Copy & Paste

- lartones, on 09/16/2008, -6/+31It defiantly didn't fix the fact that Safari closes on it's own.
- Bovorik, on 09/16/2008, -15/+38What's this "BabyMan" still doing on Digg?
- mightymouse, on 09/16/2008, -5/+25http://www.d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y.com/
- crossmr, on 09/16/2008, -10/+27No, MrBabyman is still posting to digg..
- Failchan, on 09/16/2008, -10/+26Buried for MrBabyMan.
- locojones, on 09/16/2008, -16/+31Too bad the 2.1 upgrade can't also ban MrBabyScam.
- vanjab, on 09/16/2008, -3/+16Yay for reception fix, I can finally browse the web while on the toilet...
- jeffkee, on 09/16/2008, -1/+12Backups are automatically created upon sync.
- lukasm, on 09/16/2008, -0/+10ummm.. tried the search box at the top of the contacts list?
- dudup, on 09/16/2008, -1/+112.1 made a hell of difference in here on the software side (iTunes, App Store, lags, stability, etc) for 2G users.
- SethBoy, on 09/16/2008, -0/+10Where were you when 2.0 was released?
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -0/+10yes. quickpwn works.
- dotorg, on 09/16/2008, -2/+11What? You're an idiot. 2.1 made a *huge* difference in the first gen iPhones. My battery life more than doubled, weird hangs and keyboard lag across the phone is gone, I often had apps take *minutes* or more to install and now install in a few seconds, and my sync/backup time dropped by 90%.
- coredump0x01, on 09/16/2008, -1/+10I'm pleased to see that updating apps no longer ***** up your icon placement.
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -1/+9If you live in the uk you can use o2mms.net to allow you to send MMS - it works perfectly.
- Visarga, on 09/16/2008, -4/+12Yeah, it fixes everything. Except for the natzi impossible to disable autocorrection "feature". Imagine typing in a language not on the list (and my iPhone is officially bought) and having all your words turned into the closest matching English words. Nice job Steve!
- GliTCH82, on 09/16/2008, -3/+10Not entirely correct, at least for me. I had a first gen iPhone that was completely crippled by the 2.xx firmwares. I thought it was just the first gen hardware running 2.x, but when I got a 3G and it was the exact same I realized it's gotta be the firmware. Sure enough, this fixed both.
- jnc8651, on 09/16/2008, -2/+9yumm bacon.....
- orlyfactor, on 09/16/2008, -2/+9Yeah, it won't make that ***** blog popular.
- firebirdx01, on 09/15/2008, -17/+24Love the Apple media spin - for them this patch "improves" the 3G making it sound like they are doing you a favor.
But in reality, they are fixing issues that arose only with the buggy launch of the 3G. Update to 2.1 on 2G and you won't notice any difference. - Remmiz, on 09/16/2008, -0/+6Welcome to the world of awesome. This is the main use for my iPhone.
- JDPoZ, on 09/16/2008, -0/+6Excuse me, but you forgot a few:
-video recording
-voice dialing
-copy / paste
Here's something that especially pisses me off: The iPhone is capable of 3D graphics and playback of full-length feature films downloaded from the store or pulled off your hard drive... so why in the hell can't it record even 10 seconds of video using its built-in camera!?! - smashingmonkey, on 09/16/2008, -2/+8Fixed the following problems for me:
1. Battery life. Previously I just had to have 3G off in order to get decent battery life. Now I get close to as good with 3G on all of the time, which is impressive considering the extra power required to utilize a 3G signal.
2. Tower switching between edge and 3G. Spotty with 3G on and the iPhone would often choose a marginal 3G signal over a strong Edge signal. Solved completely.
3. Backup and app updates literally take a fraction of the time. - comradeTJH, on 09/16/2008, -0/+6Happened to me as well in Zürich, Switzerland. In some areas it displays all bars for 3G where I only had 2-3 previously. But it switches to EDGE very often now where I had a decent 3G signal before. At home I had constantly 1-3 3G bars. Never noticed a fallback to EDGE but with 2.1 I'm on EDGE very often.
So, I'm not very happy with the update. It didn't fix the Application update issues either. The only thing that's now definitely better is the Contacts app.
Oh, and the new 3G/E icons are ugly as well. - megamod, on 09/16/2008, -3/+9is there a battery benchmark for the 3G before and after 2.1? I feel like it improved it by a huge amount, but I would like to see some tests to make sure it's not all psychological.
- MrChunks, on 09/16/2008, -0/+6Yes you can
- YoungBeur, on 09/16/2008, -0/+6you can disable it using a patch from Cydia.
- Jackosx, on 09/16/2008, -1/+7A thousands diggs for you sir.
Dugg from my toilet in England. - stayputnik, on 09/16/2008, -1/+7yes, but you have to tattoo the instructions on your body so the geniuses don't know what you're up to.
- georgemason01, on 09/16/2008, -5/+11He has nowhere else to go and nothing else to do. We were hoping for too much by asking him to leave in shame.
- scabbers, on 09/16/2008, -1/+6The current version of the article or section reads like an advertisement
- drewpost, on 09/16/2008, -2/+7I am on O2 in the UK and I have to say that, if anything, the update seems to have made my 3G connection LESS reliable. I am getting 3-4 bars of 3G occasionally in my flat whereas I would only see 1-2 tops before. Otherwise my phone is always on the full 5 bar GPRS (not EDGE) network. Now O2 says I am meant to have full 3G coverage in my area and I have full 3G bars on a nokia N95 and 6500 slide but not at all on my iphone.
I have also noticed in going aorund in London, a city with nearly complete 3G coverage, that I am being knocked off of 3G and onto the older GRPS network more often than I was on 2.0.x and that when I do have 3G it's not reliable and won't load any webpages etc. It's really friustrating. Any other Brits on here in London who have seen this? - gllopc, on 09/16/2008, -0/+4That's been done - you just didn't realize that he's powerful enough to make them invisible as well.
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -7/+11i want to believe... but it doesn't
- vilago, on 09/16/2008, -0/+4i'm hungry
- flashback99, on 09/16/2008, -2/+6maybe the problem is just that you have poor reception. bit silly to assume your being dugg down by fanboys.
- Sp0rAdiC, on 09/16/2008, -4/+8buried for burying because of who submitted the article
- thecosmicpope, on 09/16/2008, -2/+6Well the Contact App still lags upon opening. Oddly, if you access the contacts via the Phone App, it is much faster. The lag has been reduced, but it is still there. Overall the update is great, but it still isn't as fast and smooth as 1.1.4.
Still missing important features though. Lets have some copy and paste and MMS support. - keepinithamsta, on 09/16/2008, -1/+5I don't have that problem...
- d03boy, on 09/16/2008, -1/+5IT'S YOU'RE YOU ***** MORON
- jjustin01, on 09/16/2008, -0/+4I actually tried to respond to this on my iPhone, but Safari crashed so now I am on my PC.
I have been getting a lot of what I am starting to dub "the black screen of death". My iPhone crashes and the screen goes black for about 30 seconds and then returns to the home screen. It happens on multiple apps. My keyboard has a delay when it opens. The SMS app is still slow as hell on most days as well.
The good is that my battery life is waaaay longer, my reception is better from what I can tell and my contacts list is a lot faster. So they are on the right track. -
