iPhone 2.0 unlock tool released, tested
reghardware.co.uk — Apple released the iPhone 3G on 11 July and nine days later, iPhone hacking crew the iPhone Dev Team posted the latest version of the their jailbreaking and unlocking utility, PwnageTool.First, PwnageTool 2.0 won't unlock a 3G iPhone, but it will jailbreak one to allow third-party apps to be installed through an alternative channel to the one Apple

- dreamguy, on 07/21/2008, -17/+36Title is misleading...the tool does not unlock iPhone, only jailbreaks it.
- kjk437, on 07/21/2008, -0/+31Well, yes and no. It unlocks the 2G iPhone, not the 3G one. It still jailbreaks each one regardless.
- Kobe824, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4Jailbreaks 3G but fully unlocks and jailbreak 2G.
Step-by-step directions with all the tools you need to update/unlock your 1st generation iPhone to 2.0 with Windows. Fast torrent download, you need a torrent client for this... micro torrent (utorrent) works great :

- 801NvizioN, on 07/21/2008, -11/+1WHOA IS THIS SOMETHING NEW?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
- MopTop650, on 07/21/2008, -0/+8I thought this was already front paged...? Anyways, I've used this on my iPod Touch, and it worked wonderfully. Good job, Dev Team! :-)
:.:Edit:.: Yes, this has already front paged - http://digg.com/apple/Pwnage_2_0_is_OUT- cdbeshore, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1it works wonderfully, but it should be said that it really isn't worth jailbreaking right now. You don't get installer yet and you don't really get anything useful unless you are into SSH or command line stuff. So don't expect to jailbreak and get summerboard, customizer or any of the games.
- BahamianCraig, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4I have iPhone rev1 and it is running both jailbroken and unlocked 2.0. Took about 20 minutes. Software works as title says. Does not unlock iPhone 3G.
- ajmccoll, on 07/21/2008, -6/+1It took forever for it to work with my phone, but eventually it did. Only downside was 2.0 itself. Downgraded back to 1.1.4.
- PathDaemon, on 07/21/2008, -1/+4What was wrong with 2.0? I'd love to know...
- ajmccoll, on 07/29/2008, -0/+0Slow and I missed being able to customize the look of the UI.
- PathDaemon, on 07/21/2008, -1/+4What was wrong with 2.0? I'd love to know...
- Hellman109, on 07/21/2008, -1/+1Ive unlocked my iPhone using windows :)
No official tools out yet, but you can use winpwn with a custom 2.0 image and get it jailbroken/unlocked this way.
(winpwn on 1.1.4, then restore mode shift+restore in itunes to the custom 2.0 firmware available on torrents) - skinsgamer, on 07/21/2008, -2/+13There is no point in jailbreaking now. All you will have is Cydia with no apps to download.
- MopTop650, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5That is because the entire subsystem has changed... All of the frameworks, and UIKits have moved. You don't expect everything to re-appear overnight?
- organik, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Well, NES and OpenSSH works - NES is one of the best 3rd party apps! I'm sure there will be Summerboard and much more coming soon.
- fabio1, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1also mobile terminal. For unix and network admins, this is a quite handy app, as it allows you to ssh to your servers/routers/etc.
- SPECOPS, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1They are slowly coming in...
NES.app has been updated and is available (and I can confirm it works on my phones). - subface, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2yeah it's sad that there's so much hype about jailbreaking since the new tool is out, but very little mention that 99% of the apps we're jailbreaking it for won't work anymore. waste of time for most people to rush into it now.
- DigDugDigger, on 07/21/2008, -2/+2Waiting for ApolloIM then I guess I'll give it a run. BTW, why isn't there any VNC clients in the App Store?
- quizzy, on 07/21/2008, -0/+7there has been since sometime last week...look up Mocha VNC Lite
- Chairboy, on 07/21/2008, -2/+2Why did Quizzy's message get down-dugg? MochaVNC _is_ there. Did you down-dig it, DigDugDigger?
- DigDugDigger, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Didn't digg it down. Some people just love hitting the red button.
- Chairboy, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2True 'nuff, as the score on my inquiry proves. :) Fortunately, others have since come along and modded Quizzy's message up.
- danjal, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1No apps.. but you get the app store!

- danjal, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1You can plug it into your PC as well after its finished and use it.. just incase those are wondering if its mac only all the way.
- herbstblatt, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2What I don't like at it is that it replaces the Apple startup icon with a pineapple. I want the apple back!!!
- Bob042, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Then choose expert mode, and make sure you uncheck the custom logos before you build the ipsw.
- herbstblatt, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1Oh thanks! I didn't know about that...
- edwardmluk, on 07/21/2008, -1/+5Why does everyone love iPhones so much? Whatever happened to the love of classic Nokia 3210s? Now THAT was a phone. 10 text message memory. Snake. A dictionary (of sorts). Perfection.
- highorbit, on 07/21/2008, -1/+8I don't like my iPhone 3G and regret buying it. I'm considering selling it and going back to a BlackBerry. Here's why:
- the keyboard for email is so cramped that it's very hard to use, and consequently very slow. I was able to type fast on my Blackberry. Not so on my iPhone 3G. It makes no sense that I'm able to use a horizontally-oriented keyboard in the browser, but not in email.
- the battery life is awful. With heavy usage, my Blackberry lasted 2 days. The iPhone lasts no more than 6 hours.
- the recharging connector is a proprietary, horribly flimsy, too large connector. The blackberry used an industry standard mini-USB connector to charge or xfer data. You can get a mini-USB cable anywhere if you forget one while you're traveling. If you forget your iPhone charger while going someplace exotic, you're screwed.
- apps can't run in the background. I tried to use a RSS reader that automatically fetches its feeds in the background, and it can't do that - it has to be manually activated by the user. Same for Pandora Radio app - you can't listen to Pandora music and then go read email. This thing can't walk and chew gum at the same time.
- there's no copy and paste feature, anywhere. This is the most stupid omission. Blackberry has always had this. I often need to excerpt parts of an email in my response. The iPhone 3G makes that impossible.
- push email is limited to Apple's me.com service, but me.com locks you into a proprietary service with an apple "me.com" domain name. And me.com can't sync to other cloud-based services like Google Apps for Your Domain - it can only sync to Microsoft Outlook, Apple's Address Book & iCal programs, or other computer based packages. I am so past that era - I want my email, calendar and contacts stored in the cloud. If I wanted to use a computer to access my calendar etc, I wouldn't have got a smartphone - I'd have used a computer. My Blackberry used to sync wirelessly in the background with Google Apps calendar, and it had push email with Google Apps and gmail.
- the iPhone wants to sync to just ONE computer. If I have my music on one computer, it can't do a partial sync to another computer. This is probably due to iTunes' preposterous DRM policy. That sort of "lock-you-in" nonsense reminds me of the worst of Microsoft. I now use Amazon and only buy uncrippled MP3 music that I can store and use anywhere I chose.
- the iTunes store can't be accessed with a simple web browser - you have to access it from iTunes. So if you are traveling somewhere and you have a problem with a purchase on your iPhone, your iTunes account is locked until you can access it - from an installed iTunes only - and address the issue.
- the Google maps based mapping application is slow on the iPhone. On my blackberry it used to run and update faster. When I'm driving, I don't have time to wait for this thing to update my location because its processor is still thinking.
- i've managed to crash the iPhone 3G a few times such that it freezes and closes what I am doing, and once froze so totally that I had to do a cold reboot. That's a pretty poor show from Apple. My Blackberry crashed every now and then, but not as frequently as this.- misterjangles, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Some good valid points. One thing, though, syncing to multiple computers - you can do it in a limited way. I have my music in OSX, but my contacts/calendar/tasks are in Windows/Outlook (via Parallels). I sync music with the OSX iTunes and sync contacts/calendar/tasks with iTunes in windows - two separate iTunes libraries. They don't conflict with each other surprisingly as long as you check the right boxes on each iTunes install.
As far as music, you can store it anywhere by configuring iTunes not to organize your music - then it will just link to wherever you save it instead of copying it to the itunes folder. But, you are locked down to that one iTunes install.

- vijayawada, on 07/21/2008, -1/+0Apart from what "highorbit" mentioned.
-- Mobileme deleted all outlook(exchange accn) contacts and calendars. It wont sync with exchange account of outlook but can/will delete them.
-- Mobileme does not allow selection of calendars to sync. Either all or nothing, it wont allow to select calendars and contact groups to sync. Free yahoo sync has lot better options of syncing calendar and contacts.
-- Mobileme mail does not have server side filters. You cannot automatically organize mails from different sources.
-- iPhone does not allow multiple contact groups. Either mobileme and/or exchange or itunes.
-- Mobileme photos does not showup in photos app of iPhone. Forget videos. you have to use safari to look at photos in mobileme accn.
-- Alarm cannot start a radio or iTunes playlist.
-- Still sick of paying for ringtones. Why can't they allow mp3s
-- And last but not least. If froze few times in couple of days.
Otherthan these "It Just works".- zzz@tkz, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1If you have a Mac, you can use Garage Band to make free ringtones out of any audio file.
