- miketheburrito, on 07/20/2008, -0/+7I have a 1st gen iPhone (got it after 5 hours in line on launch day last year) and have had it jailbroken for quite some time with the 1.1.3 firmware. I decided to give it an update to the 2.0 firmware to test out the new features. After updating to 2.0, however, my Mail.app crashed constantly and I noticed everything else ran comparatively slow.
For the heck of it, I gave this new Pwnage tool a whirl to see if it would work. It created a custom restore.ipsw with bootloader.bins I had to download online (this is all described step-by-step in an easy process via Pwnage). When it was all said and done, it worked flawlessly: it not only jailbroke my 2.0 iPhone, but it also fixed my Mail.app problems and everything runs nice and fast now.
Rock on iPhone Dev Team, rock on.
edit: here is the iPhone Dev Team's official blog post to bypass blogspam - http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ - jmbrysk, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Before everyone rushes to do this, keep in mind that there is NO Installer.app with this release. A new installer alternative, "Cydia", sits in it's place. There is no easy way to add sources to Cydia, and the sources that are included are mainly for developer purpose. Any apps developed for 1.1.4 have to be ported to 2.0 by the developer before they will work. It's best to wait this one out a week or so until the developers have had time to play around.
And by the way, contrary to what miketheburrito said, most poeple reported problems with their mail.app AFTER jailbreaking. - netgeek06, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Cool I love iphone and mac.
- Hellman109, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1FYI if you get mail.app crashing do it again but dont restore your backup and its fine.
Also, you can download the custom IPSW file for 2.0 and use winpwn (windows version) to winpwn it on 1.1.4, then load the 2.0 custom firmware through recovery mode and shift+restore in iTunes.
