- traphik, on 01/19/2008, -8/+95Hackers: 3 Apple: 0
- kee440, on 01/19/2008, -2/+63If they released it before the next update (SDK), then Apple would be able to fix the exploit that the jailbreak uses.
- kris33, on 01/19/2008, -1/+53Finding new ways to jailbreak it get harder and harder. They don't want to release this now and let Apple fix it before the SDK. They may not even find a new way to jailbreak at all or at a long time.
The 1.1.3 update isn't that a big of a deal anyway. What would you rather want; a jailbroken 1.1.3 with wiggly icons now and a long time of waiting for SDK or a jailbroken SDK at the first day? - angrycat, on 01/19/2008, -2/+47Rumor is if you get a cat to open safari with his nose it automatically jailbreaks the ipod.
- Weip, on 01/19/2008, -3/+46Breaking news :
Apple won't release the SDK before hacker release jailbreak 1.1.3, so we gonna wait forever!!!!! DHaAAAAAAAAAAA - jdeane, on 01/19/2008, -4/+41Nice.
Though I'm still pissed that they won't release it until the end of February. - haimtime, on 01/19/2008, -8/+42Didn't anybody notice that the video was using the ipod touch NOT the iphone
- Wang, on 01/19/2008, -5/+35No point releasing it only to have apple patch it in the 1.1.4 firmware which will be out shortly (the one most people have been waiting for).
- kris33, on 01/19/2008, -2/+26This video has been confirmed real by several members of the two teams, and by the administrator of hackint0sh:
http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/announcement.php?f ... - garbs, on 01/19/2008, -1/+22If the hackers don't expose the hole they used to get in, then (hopefully) Apple won't have it patched in 1.1.4
Do you think Apple is going to support Installer.app and all the free community-driven software? - thesportoflife, on 01/19/2008, -4/+25Can they at least post the 1.1.3 iphone apps so us touch users dont have to pay for them and can use them on 1.1.1/1.1.2
- kris33, on 01/19/2008, -1/+21The two teams have confirmed it is real, so it is.
- KingChronic, on 01/19/2008, -1/+17Yeah, I saw this this morning when it came out. It is BS in my opinion because now that they announced that they found a way to jailbreak, Apple will have a field day hunting for bugs in it. They should have just kept quiet and announced it when the SDK official firmware was released. Plus, we don't need the SDK. Those apps will run in user mode (mobile) anyway and you will be able to do much less. With our current apps running at the top (root), we can do a lot more.
Just my $0.02 - dagamer34, on 01/19/2008, -2/+17Wiggling icons means it's 1.1.3. The fact that Installer runs like normal when opened means it's jailbroken.
- Wang, on 01/19/2008, -1/+12It's getting harder and harder to jailbreak new firmwares, and these guys have put in a lot of effort already. They want to ensure that we can all jailbreak 1.1.4 (1.1.3 isn't that major an update anyhow, best to wait for something worthwhile).
- Vandessa, on 01/19/2008, -1/+12So is the SDK really that uber of a thing? Yes, you can write apps for the iPhone but doesn't it still have to be apple certified to be usable (legitly)?
- tian2992, on 01/19/2008, -0/+10Jailbreak is because of the technical term of locking that Apple used; Google It.
- PDAIsAOk, on 01/19/2008, -1/+10Spoken like a true Apple employee. Jail breaking adds a lot of usefulness to the iPhone, don't diminish the efforts of all of those programmers out there making free add ons for us.
- likwidfuzion, on 01/19/2008, -1/+10Don't know why you're getting buried since what you said is exactly right.
Read the latest post: http://www.hackthatphone.com/113/iphone_informatio ... - xekonic, on 01/19/2008, -1/+8Should still be valid even if it's an ipod touch, I believe.
- likwidfuzion, on 01/19/2008, -1/+8You have absolutely no idea WTF you're talking about. Buried for pure inaccuracy.
- theright, on 01/19/2008, -2/+8The firmware is practically identical, save for a few UI differences and a couple of extra applications. The jailbreaking process will be the same on both the iPhone and the iPod touch.
The hacking folk probably use iPod touches over iPhones for obvious reasons - nphp20, on 01/19/2008, -0/+6What a not-so-subtle way of advertising your own digg post.
- garbs, on 01/19/2008, -0/+6As far as I can tell, that repository only has 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 apps right now.
- mcnearcj, on 01/19/2008, -0/+6He doesn't have anything on the other page. Once he pressed the home button it went away.
- Rockmaninoff, on 01/19/2008, -0/+6Are you kidding me? It shows the new Springboard, with wiggly icons and the ability to move them. It also shows Installer.app working fine.
Plenty of proof. Now I can't wait until February. - likwidfuzion, on 01/19/2008, -0/+6Don't jump the shark just yet. You'll be screwed if the jailbreak requires an older firmware...
- inactive, on 01/19/2008, -0/+5Jailbreaking has been extremely useful and entertaining. The only reason that Apple is releasing the SDK is because they know people will jailbreak them anyways.
- likwidfuzion, on 01/19/2008, -0/+5They can and probably will make the firmware updates for free like they always have. But, they can and will (as history tells us) charge for just the apps, which they already started doing with the iPod Touch.
- inactive, on 01/19/2008, -0/+5Your cache has to be cleared first.
- ewcost, on 01/19/2008, -1/+6Why does know one understand that their videos would be much easier to watch if they put their camera on a tripod or table and set the exposure/focus correctly on their camera!
- timdorr, on 01/19/2008, -6/+11Wait, so they're holding the release to allow us to run third party apps until Apple releases a firmware that allows third party apps? How does that make any sense?
- likwidfuzion, on 01/19/2008, -0/+5The title should say "1.1.3 Firmware" instead since the jailbreak works for either device.
- likwidfuzion, on 01/19/2008, -0/+5Not quite. The jailbreak requires 1.1.1 to install OktoPrep. If you're already on 1.1.1, there's no need to downgrade to 1.1.1 (i.e., it's redundant). Once you have OktoPrep installed, you UPDATE in iTunes (not restore, otherwise OktoPrep's modifications are overwritten), use the 1.1.2 jailbreak, and then you're free.
- markwilcox, on 01/20/2008, -0/+4Lol, if you think all the good apps are going to be free then be prepared to be disappointed.
- Sun.Surfin, on 01/19/2008, -1/+5Er, was 1.1.2 ever even truly jailbroken? The only way I know of for the jailbreak is to downgrade to 1.1.1 and install something to prevent the upgrade from doing something... so it's not like you can just insta-jailbreak 1.1.2. You have to prevent the update from doing things.
- fraggle35, on 01/19/2008, -0/+4Do you do everything you're told?
- Chakat, on 01/19/2008, -0/+4I know one of the guys on the dev team in charge of the reverse engineering. It's always good to have a break up your sleeve so that when they do patch your hole, you can release a new version very quickly. Some of the devs weren't happy with how 1.1.2's jailbreak was released for this very reason.
- eyesmell, on 01/19/2008, -0/+4Who really does know one?
If one doth know;
then don't thou knowest.
No. - MrEcho, on 01/19/2008, -1/+5For someone that just got an iPhone an hour ago this makes me a very happy person!
- timdorr, on 01/19/2008, -1/+5But what you're suggesting is pure speculation. You state something as a fact when there's no evidence to support your position. Why wouldn't they make development free? Developers have to be able to test their code as they write it, so there's going to be some way to get apps on there without going through a whole uploading/approval process to Apple. And therefore someone should be able to write code to hack into the system however they want and start poking around to find some sort of exploit, or maybe just release that app into the wild.
Besides, Apple could just as easily push out a firmware update that exposes a new jailbreak method. And you had better believe they'll have a 1.1.5 or whatever right after the SDK release, as developers are going to find bugs a lot faster than consumers. Releasing this exploit now doesn't do anything to slow down Apple releasing another fix after that. We've had 5 firmware releases in 7 months. So, waiting nearly 2 months for another firmware update is actually a long time, based on the average release cycle we've seen. They should just release it now. - rufo, on 01/19/2008, -1/+5The reason they charge $20 for the iPod touch upgrade is because Apple didn't count the revenue from iPod touches as subscription revenue, which means they can't add major features and functionality without charging for it under Sarbanes-Oxley. (This is subject for debate, but they aren't taking any chances after the SEC investigation they went through.)
The iPhone and AppleTV are subscription revenue, which allows Apple to add functionality whenever they want. - cantabro, on 01/20/2008, -0/+3failed
- kavendano14, on 01/20/2008, -0/+3yes it is
- markwilcox, on 01/20/2008, -1/+4Why are you here?
- bilious, on 01/20/2008, -0/+3Jail is a unix term to specify a method of separating processes in an operating system. The user accessible side is supposed to be "jailed" away from the subsystem. Jailbreak allows access to this subsystem. The term has been in use for a long time.
- jersey, on 01/19/2008, -1/+4I want that damn contacts app on my phone springboard.
/ loser that wont jailbreak / - dagamer34, on 01/20/2008, -0/+3In case your brain checked out, it is unlikely that you will be able to run the kind of software needed to unlock a phone using Apple's "official" 3rd party SDK and libraries. Thus, it's best to wait for the SDK to come out before unleashing this on the community.
- eyesmell, on 01/19/2008, -0/+2Dugg for 'that uber of a thing'
- likwidfuzion, on 01/19/2008, -0/+2Like I said above, to consumers like you and I: http://www.tuaw.com/2008/01/17/the-itunes-iapplica ...
