there are 2 versions of the new imac. the right cd loader for most of us and a LeFties version. - yvovandoorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I mirrored it here:

Proper credit was given as well :-) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.kodawarisan.com.nyud.net:8090/imac_intel/imac_intel02.html

haha when ??!!!?? they seem to take forever.... - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Apple's never prevented CPU upgrades before, but downgrading to a P4 to get around TPM isn't a possibility (Intel modified the Core Duo's Socket so that while it may look like a Northwood P4 socket, and has the same number of pins, they're in a slightly different configuration (one pin is moved over a row).
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I don't have any anti-virus software, nor any anti-malware software, nor any firewall."
ramble, you're so full of *****. if you don't have a firewall for windows xp, then you'll get the msblast worm within MINUTES! don't lie. it's wrong, and it makes you look bad. - nullmind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why would they solder a processor in the first place?
- master_of_fm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"it's fake because you remove the back of the computer so the iron thing holding up the computer shouldn't be in the pic it should only be the screen" - sigginike90
and exactly how many intel imacs have you disassembled? - kev01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"it's fake because you remove the back of the computer so the iron thing holding up the computer shouldn't be in the pic it should only be the screen"
that's only true for the first gen imac's ..
the imac g5 w/ isight (i have one) dissasembles just like in the pictures of the link - sud0n1m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have started a contest related to learning more about the iMac intel http://digg.com/apple/Contest_to_Boot_Windows_XP_on_Intel_Mac
- ani-pockdotnet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0opps that was the intel front...
- jakv5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I gotta get one of these!
- plum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Geminitojanus, have you ever seen PowerPC processor upgrade for G4 or G5 Power Macs?
- fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow it looks identical to the new slimmer imac g5 that was released. Interesting. THe picture above was from the first gen and second gen imac g5. which everything was user installable. The new imac g5 and the intel one are way different.
- ani-pockdotnet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The inside is a mess! If this is true, compare the G5 version:
http://www.kodawarisan.com/imacg5/imacg510.jpg
and the intel version:
http://mactree.sannet.ne.jp/~kodawarisan/imac_intel/01141142.jpg
This is fake right? - mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is anyone ACTUALLY exited about Windows Vista? When Vista comes out, nobody will care as much as they do about the possability of running OSX on their pc.
- drakino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Doesn't look all that different then the iMac G5 with iSight here:
http://www.kodawarisan.com/imacg5_isight/imacg501i.html
Though both definitely show differences from the first iMac G5 that was user serviceable.
http://www.kodawarisan.com/imacg5/imacg503.html
I suppose not worrying about making the insides very pretty and user accessible probably helps the cost.
(theres another story in queue with this as well, not sure what one was first) - mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All I hope is that there will be an intel ibook. $2k is hard to justify for a notebook just to get away from windows.
And Vista.... thanks, no thanks. The only MS OS with a decent interface in my house is my 360. Vista is dead to me. And if MS is only supporting XPhome until 2K8, soon windows will be dead to me too - hotwaterham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"the truth hurts hot-h20
if you mean to suggest that you can keep a windows box hack/virus/trojan/worm/whatever free *just* by using your head, i'd be really tempted to label you a fool."
What truth? You're just reciting the tired anti-Microsoft party line that we've all heard a million times. It just gets old.
It's _very_ easy to keep a Windows XP box spic-and-span without 3rd party firewalls, virus protection, and anti-spyware scanners. You're welcome not to believe that...but I'm content with what I've discovered about XP through _actually using it_ under a range of different conditions. - dmann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0macs just work... i aint a hacker, or a modder... they get the ***** done. I dont spend time doing maintenance, i spend time being a retard who reads digg all day and doesnt write the pages his producers and editors want!!!
- camtech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dang, the iMacG5 has all its own molded pieces for the fan ducts, and other parts have their own covers. The Intel version looks like its made from Plastic Bags and foil with a metal mounting piece down the middle.
- rockbyter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i think its a great design for what it is. being a mac or not. If it were made by some large company and came shipped with windows, all the bells and whistles we expect, i think 90 percent of all comments would become "the next lan party box". The internals look like the insides of a laptop that get tucked behind an lcd. i call it a laptop with the screen reversed, put on a pedastal. Sweet stuff.

- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"So let me get this straight....your going to spend twice as much as you need to on hardware, so you can play games?!? Thats the dumbest damn thing I've heard in a long time."
well gaming is one part, otherwise it's all work and wasting time on digg - aa90digg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To Absurdist:
"However, most of my life is spent on the road servicing and supporting Windows-based systems in interactive exhibits. Which means that, since I don't want to carry two laptops, I'm stuck using a wintel system that I can dual-boot into Linux."
Have you tried Virtual PC?
Granted you couldn't boot Linux, but XP certainly. - ivc-, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Someone please just make a extenstion for Firefox that automatically creates a Coral/nyud.net:8090 cache whenever a digg user visits a site published to the front page.
- kev01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Fake - the CD loader is on the wrong side, unless the flipped the picture - which would have to be intentional... and stupid. I have two 20Inch iMac G5s and they are right loaders, intels are the same"
The pictures DO show it to be on the right side? - cwcheang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jk,
the pics DO show it to be on the right side. - mertle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why spend twice as much? Why spend all your time updating virus and spy ware software? I would rather spend more on a better looking and safer machine than half the price for an inferior product. Windows (virus, spy ware, Trojans) V's Mac (no virus, no spy ware, no Trojans)) I know which one i prefer.
- linz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damn, those Intel chips are old! They have that ancient old Intel logo!!!!!
;-) - absurdist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@aa90digg, and anyone else asking the question...
I would love to use a Mac. I think OSX is far more powerful, safe, and simply for day-to-day use than any MS product. With Linux only slightly behind. However, most of my life is spent on the road servicing and supporting Windows-based systems in interactive exhibits. Which means that, since I don't want to carry two laptops, I'm stuck using a wintel system that I can dual-boot into Linux. There are many reasons other than the oft-heard gaming argument. - jbklego, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.kodawarisan.com.nyud.net:8090/k2006/archives/2006/01/imac_core_duo_a.html
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Replacing the CPU would not defeat the TPM it's the infineon chip on the board thats the TMP module apple should have stayed away from TCPA type stuff as it might bite them if it's ever used in a manner that offends the user base.
But socketing the cpu may prevent it from being a road apple I except third party hardware manufactures to quickly make a carrier to use a faster cpu just like they did for G4 and G5 macs.
As for a pin being out of place you do know they make adaptors to use later P4s in earlier p4 boards and tulian cellys on socket 370 boards? - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"One can notice that the processor is not soldered to the motherboard, but via a socket. So, it will be potentially possible to change it in the future, if Apple does not prevent such modifications by some hardware or software trick."
By this I'm sure the author means upgrading to new, faster Core Duo chips as they're released (you can buy them retail), not downgrading to a P4 or something (which is impossible). - master_of_fm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that is a socket 479 usually found in laptops, not a socket 478. no adapters or anything special needed to upgrade the cpu, just the right style processor
- corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A bientot, iMacIntel disassembled site...
Anybody put up a mirror? - Eric4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Typo. Mirror: http://ehost.serveftp.com:443/imacintel-disassembled/
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Geminitojanus, have you ever seen PowerPC processor upgrade for G4 or G5 Power Macs?"
I have! Not for G5s, but there are a LOT for G4s. This is a pretty big deal since this is the first time since the Blue & White G3s that a Mac has had a CPU that wasn't either soldered on or used a proprietary daughter card.

I'm more interested in some kind of VMWare so I can run my Windows dev tools on there, than dual booting but do appreciate for the gamers there is no choice (until more native games are made that is).
- grayapple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I honestly care more about the fact intel are still using the old font type on the C.D!
- yvovandoorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh and my mirror is on a dual OC3 and the machine powering it has had a rock solid uptime... it shouldn't go down at all (plus its just on port 80 instead of some odd port #, for those using a proxy...)
http://www.disgruntled-dutch.com/2006/general/imacintel-disassembled/ - macattacks10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm disappointed by this design. Even if the processor is removable (which it's possible in the PowerMac G5 [but not recommended] and PowerMac G4 [which there are upgrade cards available]) inside it is an entire mess. Apple is well known for making their computers well designed, inside and out, and how everything hangs makes it look like the heat flow would seriously suck. Compare that to the Rev A and B iMac (http://www.macworld.com/photos/imacg5coverimac1/) and the more resent less flashy but still nicer Rev C iMac G5 design (http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/imac_isight_internals/imac_g5_isight_inside.html)
- falloutsyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it looks like you could modify the processor =] Maybe this is the turning point for macs.

Without these, you'd still be using a VT100 to log into a VAX so's you can play Colossal Caverns and read some dirty text files about elves and Mr. Spock. Fo' reals!

If that's all they did then a simple socket adapter should solve that problem. - sigginike90, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0it's fake because you remove the back of the computer so the iron thing holding up the computer shouldn't be in the pic it should only be the screen
- hotwaterham, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"you are either lying through your teeth or just plain lucky.. simple as that."
It's not so hard to have a virus-free Windows box as long as you have (and use) half a brain. Don't download warez, don't visit crack sites, don't look at porn, browse with Firefox, and use a bit of common sense when downloading files.
tschreck, it's great that you enjoy your Mac and really feel comfortable using it. Now grow up, realize that other people don't necessarily share your point of view, and stop trying to incite yet _another_ OS X vs. Windows flame war. - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Fake - the CD loader is on the wrong side, unless the flipped the picture - which would have to be intentional... and stupid.
