- AriX, on 10/31/2007, -4/+115Thanks for digging! :D
- roessnakhan, on 08/28/2008, -1/+82It allows you to do such amazing things as this:
http://i24.tinypic.com/zwxkja.png - blocguy, on 10/16/2007, -2/+67Totally jailbreaking my touch so it can read "DON'T SLIDE ME BRO".
- thenewkasanova, on 10/15/2007, -2/+51Thank you so much for doing all this work! I can't believe you're only 13.
- defectDS, on 10/15/2007, -1/+44There are a lot of kids with this kind of passion, just not all of them like to write applications. Some love their sports, and others take pride in their education. There are other ways at excelling at life that don't have to do with programming. :)
- blueplanet, on 10/25/2007, -2/+36He's 13...well that's a little humbling...
- frenchkick, on 10/19/2007, -2/+35damn hoodlum
i remember when we had to this manually
you dont know how easy you punks have it
it was like a week ago - AriX, on 10/16/2007, -1/+28Thanks for the support guys! I will make it clearer on my site what jailbreaking means.
- techlyc, on 10/16/2007, -0/+25Dugg for him monitoring the thread and interacting with replies. Dugg for him knowing what he's talking about.
- starnix17, on 10/19/2007, -3/+28Dugg for the kid's age.
- dkraneveldt, on 10/15/2007, -0/+22AriX, you are my hero.
thanks a bunch - AriX, on 10/15/2007, -2/+23It actually installs both Installer.app and Trip1PogoStick... And it's mostly written in bash, AppleScript is just for the GUI.
- sennott, on 10/15/2007, -4/+24This community is inspiring. I am working on projects to use the iPhone/ iPod Touch for children and adults with special needs. It is amazing to see first how people are working together on this front and also how gifted people are. Right on to the people who made this possible. So much thanks! Your the best.
My goal is to help people who cannot use their natural voice to talk by using the power of the excellent Apple hardware. It makes me smile to be able to collaborate in this process! : ) - kodek, on 10/15/2007, -0/+20Jails in a unix environment are controlled environments where users have limited access to resources. One can jail a user in a specific directory, and that user will think he has access to the entire system, but in reality, he's in a "virtual" file system.
Jailbreaking means getting out of jail, as Puppetfunk said (and he's being dugg down for it). It means being able to get to the actual file system, and not the "virtual" one, giving one access to the entire system and not what the administrator (or in this case Apple) intended. - Dumbledorito, on 10/15/2007, -7/+23I wish you guys would quit digging people down for asking this. It's not obvious from the site what it does (it doesn't even have a wiki, so I'm in the dark as well), so try typing something helpful instead of just being a jerk.
- mobilehavoc, on 10/21/2007, -2/+16Can't speak for iJailbreak but the Windows version of this works flawlessly on jailbreaking an iPhone as well...I used it last night and it's great.
Windows app - TouchFree v5 -> http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=36794 ...
I'm assuming iJailbreak is using the same process so it should also be able to jailbreak iPhones...enjoy! - kkiran, on 10/15/2007, -0/+13Kudos dude :)
- inactive, on 10/15/2007, -3/+16Pshh! When I was 13...
Just kidding. - ispshadow, on 10/15/2007, -1/+13Don't waste your time with these folks AriX. He/She didn't take the time to understand your program, so they're not qualified to bitch about it. Props to you for writing this...
- Bootes, on 10/16/2007, -0/+11It gives you access to all the files and folders on the Touch.
- Goosemaster, on 10/15/2007, -1/+12lol..well that was random
- SlvrEagle23, on 10/15/2007, -6/+16Thanks for what you do AriX. This is the kind of bar we should be setting for today's youth...that they should find a passionate subject and pour their hearts into it. I'm glad you found that and are executing it so well.
I hope there comes a day when we're surprised when a 13 year old *isn't* developing applications...but considering today's trends I highly doubt that will be happening. This kind of intellect might not be cool to your peers but it's cool to us. ;) - clickmyface, on 10/15/2007, -3/+13That was totally my question as well. None of the websites have been helpful at all, and I think that's in extremely poor design. Mentioning what the your product does is logic 101.
- AndrewWiggin, on 10/15/2007, -2/+12Nice name.
- Appleologist, on 10/15/2007, -1/+11i'm still waiting for apptapp to be updated
- sillymango, on 10/15/2007, -0/+9Personally, I have tried this and that is why I'm submitting this story/program. It "unlocks" your iPod touch so that it is able to run most applications the iPhone can, expanding it's usefulness infinitely as long as people keep writing programs). As I have used this, I can honestly say this program works a charm and the most difficult part of the process is just restarting the iPod a couple of times.
What's good about this program is its all automatic, so those not so confident with SSH, SFTP or using Terminal can use this rather than doing it all manually. Before I knew it my iPod was loaded with lots of applications to play around with. NES on ipod anyone? - gimpbully, on 10/15/2007, -3/+12before you do this, stop and think for just a moment. "Will I be ***** pissed if my ipod gets bricked because of this?" And when it does, shut your mouth.
- jameshighmore, on 10/15/2007, -4/+13mwolfzorn -
"iJailBreak can automatically add third party applications to the iPod Touch." - mrgono3, on 10/15/2007, -2/+11dude digg has a nested comment system for a reason. (use it)
- xkorbin, on 10/15/2007, -0/+9Gives full read/write access to the filesystem.
- philo23, on 10/15/2007, -0/+9the ipod touch has a recovery mode on it, its very hard to brick it, i managed to do this to mine multiple times, simply hold the home button and the sleep/wake button down untill the connect to iTunes image apears, your ipod might reboot twice while you do it, its normal.
- AndrewWiggin, on 10/15/2007, -1/+10Why you gotta be negative?
- magicmarc, on 10/15/2007, -1/+10From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jailbreak :
"The execution of an action that enables the files of the iPhone and iPod touch to be accessed from outside" - kris33, on 10/15/2007, -0/+9good idea, but not enough room (just tried it)
- Moviespo, on 10/24/2007, -0/+8Guess he's smarter than a 5th grader...
- AriX, on 10/15/2007, -0/+8They came out with an unbrick process a couple of days ago, but you're right, an update could potentially brick it. The nice thing about updates is that you don't have to install them :P
- mwolfzorn, on 10/15/2007, -9/+17Call me stupid but what does Jailbreaking mean? I've never heard this term before and the linked website: http://ijailbreak.com/ wasn't so helpful
- Moviespo, on 10/19/2007, -2/+10Jail break is almost like the hit TV show Prison Break. Every time the firmware is free it get's locked up again... then you have to wait till next Monday to see if they were able to escape again...
Today they're free I think!? - Psichomofo, on 10/19/2007, -2/+10Hey kid, you got mad skillz. Don't listen to the haters. keep it up.
- Octanum, on 10/15/2007, -1/+9I've wanted to code when I was 13, but I just never knew how to get started :(
- AriX, on 10/15/2007, -0/+8To do this, connect your iPod and hold down the SLEEP/WAKE and HOME buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Once it does, release the SLEEP/WAKE button but continue to hold the HOME button in. After a short while, iTunes will notify you that the iPod has entered recovery mode and can now be restored. Accept it, and click Restore.
- potterboy, on 10/15/2007, -2/+10I have a group of friends (yes I have friends) aged from 9-16 and they we all code together. Its not entirely lost on the youth.
- ConfusedONE, on 10/15/2007, -5/+12So where would I find some apps to put on my newly jailbroken ipod touch?
- dagamer34, on 10/15/2007, -0/+7Jailbreak = full access to the iPhone and iPod Touch's filesystem and do whatever you want with it. It needs to be done to install third-party apps and unlock the iPhone.
- inactive, on 10/15/2007, -0/+7install community sources (in installer app) and you will get many more apps on the list.
- hackeron, on 10/15/2007, -1/+7Err, it's still unclear as to what it actually does. Does it completely remove all DRM from the Ipod? - Does it replace the onboard software with something open? - Does it allow you to use your ipod with software other than iTunes? - what does it do?
- HerrEisenheim, on 10/15/2007, -0/+6*Now* we are getting somewhere.
- piwy, on 10/15/2007, -0/+6illegal? LOL. Seriously tho dude, this is what digg should be all about. Not about pictures of half wet elephants.
- pattherat, on 10/16/2007, -0/+6To those wondering about trying it:
Works like a charm
Installs Installer.app and Trip1Pogostick automatically for you.
Great all round, thanks much! - pxa270, on 10/15/2007, -1/+7Or this
