- liquidcoooled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36Why isn't this linked to the built in camera to take pictures of the crook?
It would be better to automatically connect to a network and try to upload them.
Add a flickr stream for iAlertU criminals. - Universal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Should be standard on every MacBook Pro.
- dusingaz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19usually you don't want to do that because it gets hot and can mess up your display.
- jkill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12If the alarm doesn't stop them, then maybe this will catch them...
http://orbicule.com/undercover/ - bjtitus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Will it do this even after it is closed?
- NeCtUr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12you hope it goes the way of car alarms? what in the way that they go off so frequently and for no apparent reason that people just get pissed at them and ignore them? that'd be great for laptop security...
- thetheaterimp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Awesome program! Its still in early stages of development and will soon have a demo copy out. I cant wait to get it.
http://www.ialertu.com/ - helfire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8haha, that would be awsome, still in alpha so could happen.
- helfire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8moving the laptop to get at the battery would set off the alarm. When people steal cars they disable the security after they get in. The main point is for it to make noise and people to look over at wtf is going on, and probably throw the would be theif off
- helfire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Yes, under power management or whatever the control pane is called, you can set all the same options as your PC book.
- gab00n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I hope it locks the keyboard when the alarm system is on, else all the person has to do is turn down the sound.
- rr525356, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Hack - PLUG IN HEADPHONES
- SP33DFR34K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Cost to replace broken MacBook Pro - $2500
Cost of security - $200
Cost of seeing the thief and making everyone go WTF - Priceless - dwalsh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Which raises the slightly off-topic question that I've yet to answer.. is there a way to set a Powerbook to do nothing upon closing the lid? I can on my PC but don't see an option on my Mac.
Either way, perfect little app for the library or coffee shop when you have to step away from your laptop but remain in earshot of it. - mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7A more effective deterrent would be if it suddenly started playing the sound of someone screaming. Or porn noises. That would attract attention.
- phlux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Can this be defeated by removing the battery before/during/while stealing the laptop?
- stukdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Does anyone really think that a theif would think to turn down the volume of a machine that he is about to steal? This app won't be common enough for people to expect it to happen.
Also, this would be most fun with a roommate that always uses your computer without asking. - diafel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5And what happens when someone accidentily sets their own alarm off? Their face gets uploaded to the internet? But yeah it should snap a pic
- pype, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9If you leave your laptop unlocked and unattended you deserve to get it stolen.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It uses the front row remote which you would take with you.
- Craptacular, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Great, just when I thought we were done with car alarms going off all the time for no reason... Can you imagine Macs going off in coffee shops and book stores just when people pass by? (Urge to kill growing... growing...)
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'm guessing interacting with the system AT ALL while it's armed will set it off, for that very reason. Not to mention, it probably isn't responsive whatsoever once it's locked down.
- johndotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4then you have to get your laptop sent in because he dropped in on the ground, but at least you got it back
- plshark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4yeah but the whole point of that motion sensor is to spin down the hard drive so if the thief drops it maybe your hard drive will make it.
- seanm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That's freaking awesome. Can't stop laughing.
- mackoid101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Can someone else with another apple remote disable it?
- puttly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4it would suck if you lost the remote :(
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4yes, from the same menu, security under the pref panes
- DarkZen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Though it has flaws (early releases always do..) Its a great idea...might have to make something like this for my *nix laptop =)
-DZ - TBob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes, there probably are ways to disable the alarm, but is the average laptop thief going to think that there is an alarm in place?
- Craptacular, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Alright, granted it probably won't go off arbitrarily. BUT it is still incredibly obnoxious %u2014 in the dorkiest way %u2014 to "alarm" your laptop while you grab a latte. That's the way to get the ladies...
C'mon, this is not for security this is for pure dork pimpdom! Can't someone just close the lid and take it? - TedTschopp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, you would not be able to lock it 100% becuase you would need a way to do a legit unlock on the alarm system.
- DougPenn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Add facial recognition to auto-ID the suspect, then alert the authorities, complete with the picture and ID info. :)
- Axim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4can you read dude? you have to move the laptop to access the battery so the answer is no. you could unplug it then wait like 20 days in stealth for suspend to kick in though.. durr
- Xtopherous, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It takes much more than a person "just passing by" to set off the sudden motion sensor on the Mac laptops. It detects sudden changes in the laptop's orientation and velocity.
- FrostyFire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Uhhh I'm asking because there's no where on the dudes website that shows where to download it, he claims the Alpha has been released.
- FrostyFire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah because a thief walks around with head phones and knows to have them ready when jacking a MPB. The point is, of course there's ways around this, however it's added security either way.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'd say most people stealing laptops aren't reading digg, and probably haven't heard of anything like this yet.
- mgorbsky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It seems to be based on a widget (notice the credit at the end). Therefore, I doubt you can get that kind of lock-down from a widget. For the programs sake, I hope so. Otherwise, it would probably be possible to walk up and either mute the speakers or plug in some headphones, close the lid, and walk off.
Chances are, though, the person taking the lappy wouldnt know that the security was armed and be surprised. It's a great idea and looks useful as a SUPPLEMENT TO COMMON SENSE :) A simple cable lock can go a long way to protecting your investment from crimes of opportunity. - timtop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Agreed, in fact it should be standard on any OS software that can run on a laptop (as an option to turn on). Very useful. I hope this goes the way of car alarms.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That is as genius as the alarm itself.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just like it sucks if you lose your car keys ;)
- mgorbsky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's what AAA or your buddy 'slim' are for ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is still somewhat valid even if it's locked: a thief would move it when trying to tamper with the lock.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is incredibly useful. Imagine using your MBP in an airport, someone tries to steal, the alarm goes blaring, everyone looks at the criminal including security officers, the criminal drops the laptop and runs.
- Killerdeath, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4umm, there is a mute button on macbooks, you can press that without moving the laptop, then grab it and take it without making a sound, or just close the lid and take it . . .
But, it is a cute idea. - hydrokayak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anyone think Kevin will like it? I don't own any apple products, and am stuck with my dell laptop. I love it, but I wish it could do that. :)
- cr3ative, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Great idea! I'd love to browse a pool of suspected criminals.
You, sir, deserve a medal. +digg. -
