black imac in '06?

    i agree, black computers remind me of dell. if apple decides to start making black products, i hope they keep white although, a brushed aluminum imac would be pretty sexy too.

    Dell black is textured black plastic, a matte black. Kind of like looking at the road.

    Apple black is sexy, shiny, and scratches easily.

    I think they should bring back the pastels of the iPod minis - that's why they're selling like hotcakes on eBay now.

White is such a dull, boring color, that stands out. Black is sleek, cool and discreet. Especially if they get rid of that awful gloss finish, matte is much nicer and less prone to scratches. I would like to see black anodized metal, like the mini but black.

    I would never buy a computer BECAUSE of its color, but given they are both equal I will always go for black. Not that I plan on buying any Mac anytime soon.

    Anyway, you have a point, and i would hope the general public wouldn't buy a mac, or any computer, because of its colour.

    But, to say the colour white for electronics sucks is a bit silly, as black scratches just as easily (take the hp 4700 pda, or black ipoop nano for example).
    Like you seem to imply, it's down to the finish, as opposed to the colour itself.
    Matt finishes do look kind of bland, don't you think? I'm with you on the anodized black look though. The powerbook/powermac finish is pretty sexy too.

    What important discussions, fit for such an important news story.

    Actually, white isn't a color at all. White is the absence of color. That being said...white is clean and refreshing and represents purity. Black is so menacing. Kind of makes you wonder why Apple produces ipods that are visually opposed to each other. It's back to the good vs evil scenario we see all the time. Which will win? Which is more popular? Fun to think about.

    I find white very boring and odd for equipment, silver is fine but I prefer black. White stand out so much, especially when most other devices are black or similar. Not everyone likes to stand out. My entire computer system (2 monitors, keyboard, mouse, tower, mousepad, and windows theme) are all black. It looks better and isnt so bright. Try watching some video or playing a fullscreen game on a white monitor, it looks odd and doesnt feel right. Especially when I tend to work in the dark, white stands out and reflects more light than matte black.

    Mac people just dont get it. Normal people dont buy things like tech gadgets to look pretty or for bragging rights or to follow the latest trend. That stuff only matters for what the thing does. Mac zealots just dont get the idea of 'options'. I dont want steve jobs deciding how my stuff runs and looks, I want to choose that.

    I didnt spend $300 on a thing cause it was white and I could flaunt it around with white earbuds sticking 1/2way out of my ear. I bought it cause its good sound and size and plays music (and an extra $130 on GOOD headphones).

    If you think the white scratches easily you should see the black stuff.... ever looked at a new iPod thats been used for more than a week?

    but all in all, white is the new black
    the color of the new white ipods or imacs is actually not "white" like the plastic of, say the mighty mouse or the shuffle. They have a layer of clear plastic that refracts the light in depending on the outside conditions. For those who have no idea what I am referring to, you would need to actually own one of these babies, and look at them over time as the light in the room changes over the course of days and seasons.
