- landuajo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28Doesn't anyone worry that using the tracking wheel will leave the screen marked with smudges?
- snoozzell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16It won't be a pressure thing it will be a tap thing. Just like on a touchpad for a laptop. They don't make it so when you press hard it clicks, they make it so when you tap it clicks.
My guess is that the functionality will be that when your finger touches the screen it brings up the wheel and then you tap the area you want to click. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"Watch the next iPod have 3g's interface. It doesn't make sense any other way!"
Yes, Apple would revert to their worst implementation of iPod UI for their biggest iPod launch to date.
I'm sure whatever the issue is, Apple has figured out a way to solve it. I'm not really that worried. - siglesias, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Simulating a click wheel on an LCD is absurd because it involves an awkward variance in pressure to "click," meaning you have to push down harder to get the desired effect. How, then, do you know that you have actually "pushed" anything if you aren't staring right at the screen? It's really awkward, guys. Rethink this solid state over-LCD click wheel idea. Watch the next iPod have 3g's interface. It doesn't make sense any other way!
- tuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5i know this will get some flack but what about dropping the click whell alothegether and maybe doing something diffrent?
- fugitivALiEN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Meaning there are no pauses in between songs. Ever tried to listen to a "non-stop" Drum and Bass techno CD on an ipod... you'll lose a whole 32nd note =(
- fugitivALiEN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think it would be more feasable to have a few side oriented buttons like a slider such as a touchpad on one side to scroll, who needs fast forward and rewind when you can sliiiide!? ;)
- Refrag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5More importantly, when is Apple adding gapless playback on the Ipod and in Itunes?
- ledavee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4it's my understanding that this iPod is more than just myth. Internet sleuths have done some pretty exhaustive work going through Apple patent applications -- and it's from these that we're able to extrapolate that Apple is indeed working on a widescreen, touch, video iPod.
And as others have already mentioned, Steve Jobs himself mentioned that the 5g iPod is not THE video ipod, so obviously they are working on this "mythical" device.
The evidence may be circumstantial so far, but it's pretty convincing. - staan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Guys, stop calling this thing the "Real Video iPod." There's already a real video iPod, and it's available from Apple now. What you're after is the Hypothetical Video iPod. Please refer to it as such.
- IvanB, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11The screen will be protected with something I guess.
- teknotant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Apple is known for its ease of use, style, and practicality of its products. I am sure if there really is a touch screen ipod, which is really anyone’s guess, that it will only be released if it meets the quality that apple is known for. So why bother speculating about a product that will be obsolete a few months after it is released?
- tuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4who says it will be lcd over solid state? why not oled over solid state? or a true touch screen like palm used to do?
- nanoguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3why does the bar have to be short? it can be the length of the long side of the ipod
- mentor972, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4CAN WE SAY FINGERPRINTS????? This isn't real. Apple would not make a scroll wheen on the screen. Have you ever tried to watch a PSP with fingerprints all over it? It sucks!!
- tuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2after reading all this a say keep the click whell improve battery life expoand the use of the ipod os and the chipset and keep focusing on those key parts of the ipod and you have your self 100% of the mobile market.
- ZapWizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Snoozzell has it, you just lift then tap to simulate a click.
I really hope Apple is looking at the newer generation of capacative touch sensors, instead of old film sensors used on old CRT touchscreen.
www.qprox.com for example makes a touch sensor that could work for this, but works through a sheet of glass or plastic, rather then a thin film directly placed on the LCD. - Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Couldn't they just use a standard touch screen? It doesn't need to be THAT sensitive, just enough to get your finger position on the wheel to about 2-3 degrees, and see where you click.
- Kazbaeden, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Am I the only one who thinks a click wheel on a touch screen is an absurd idea? Why can't you just drag a scroll bar with your finger? I mean, the click wheel is a pretty good design (although awkward for my hands) but it's not the end of all interfaces.
- cntp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I like the 3G better than any other iPod - what's wrong with it??
Also - there is plastic/glass on top of the screen already. Having the LCD directly with nothing on top of it (esp. a touchscreen) would mean lots of dead screens. - KillerX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"Real Video iPod" is not real and everything is speculation at this time. RUMOR no digg!
- alej744, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ummm.... I just hope that it won't have any music impairments for the cost of cool video playback, the music is more important
- devwal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3the iriver is like the Power Wheels of motoring. 'nuff said.
- StarDal, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Steve Jobs / Apple has made it very clear that the last release was not a "Video iPod", but rather "an iPod with Video". People may balk at the semantics, but I think if he made that point, it was for a reason.
- macindosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1drm less.... dream on :)
- hizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apple is garunteed to figure out this problem.
There are going to be no clunky, misconcieved, or poorly designed aspects to the SIXTHgen iPod.
And I should certainly hope they have a much better idea than to use the most un-iPod generation to date (3rd). There's nothing wrong with the third gen, it is still my favorite iPod, but it certainly was well replaced by the ingenious click wheel.
I imagine any changes to the iPod interface will be welcome and well appraciated. - doyadigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've been thinking the same thing. I have a photo ipod and I like the physical click wheel. I usually keep my ipod in my jacket pocket and I can easily control it based on touch and tactile response. I think it would be much more difficult if not impossible to control the ipod this way if they use the idea mentioned in the article.
- tuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1oled is the ticket it uses less power there pal
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope Creative or another company can come up wit something bigger and better before Apple launches this thing so we can have better price competition in the market, and be done with the proprietary formats. I would say that we don't need an MS of MP3 players, but the fact that there is only one OS to deal with isn't entirely a bad thing where as it is entirely a bad thing when it comes to hardware, so that's not the most accurate comparison, but you get my drift.
- tuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i think the lcd idea is ok but the set up now is great but to add more value to ipod the need a drm less ipod .
- tuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i don't see that happeing. apple owns the ball game. i do see better faster ipods. i think apple is holding the bad azz ipod video back until sales tank. thats why we didn't see the first ipod video's until now. ie the stock/sales tanked. i see aplle eating creative and or buying them out.
- dlskier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1By having a touch screen clickwheel for "buzz" factor they can make a mint off of a new design of the ear buds with a click wheel on the cord.
- tuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thats a good idea. what abot doing what pda's do with there screen why has no one spoke on that other then me?
- Refrag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Because bars have a beginning and an end. Circles do not. That means that short bars suck for scrubbing through long lists.
- tuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you mean one song after another?
- tuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1ipod is gold for apple and apple knows consummer love this lill' gadget. never before has aone device attracted so much love. the delay is why ppl are pissed
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6More like: Because it's Apple, they will make something that's already out and is not really anything special but make it shinier and add an apple logo and everyone will love it:
I mean, heck: Iriver has an ipod-video like device. It is about the same size, holds 60 gigs, plays movies, the works. It's been out for more than a year now. - ZapWizard, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"Real video" meaning video that is worth watching.
The "Video" ipod as it is today is the Photo iPod that can play clips.
The clips are tiny, and just about as fun as watching sports on one of those free portable TV's that some travel agent gave you. You can't read anything, you can't make out detail. 320x240 is too small for anything more then a 15-second clip. - tuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i agree. take your time with tgis apple. case in point look what ms did with both xboxes! one was not a s fast as promised=weak sales. the 360 was cuaght on fire!=weak sales. apple is no ms but some how they pull out better hardware then ms ever could. now ms might not be a true hardware corp but they are moving this way. lets not buy there junk boy cott the drak side.
- JohnboiWaltune, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4yes, that's retarded to touch the screen with your fingers, especially when you want to watch a movie on the same screen. they should have the four buttons spaced equidistant on the top front of the device, and a long, thin touchpad along the edge of the device, so you can slide your finger or thumb along it to control volume and scroll through lists.
- milkmage, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2not too worried about smudges.. take a look at LCD's .. they smudge easily, but you can't see them if the screen is on. Same with 5G ipod. Yeah.. if it's sitting on the table ~off~ you might see smudges... but they won't be a factor if you're watching something. the Hypothetical Video ipod will hopefully come with some kind of anti-glare coating which with further mitigate marks left by greasy fingers.
- gookie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2That's the iSmudge Video featuring the Smudge Screen Technology.
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Worth the wait. The new iPod will blow everyone away.
- CyberTroll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wouldn't crossfade with a 0 second gap do that?
- ledavee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2it's my understanding that this iPod is more than just myth. The evidence may be circumstantial so far, but it's pretty convincing. - CyberTroll, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Delay of what, there is no product! There is nothing to be pissed about. When they anounce a new Ipod and if it ships slowly then you'll have a reason to complain until then STFU.
- revolutionsburn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i think apple should looking into purchasing the beatles catalog... since you know its about to go up for sale.
- alej744, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4a stylus
- bking, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2zap, I thought the exact same thing until I picked one up for a trip. Watching lost/video podcasts on a flight was absolutely no problem.
- tuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1when u can also scroll?
fast as tiger?
hence the scroll whell?!? -
