- marksven, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Good story, but it would be great if you put something a little more descriptive in the story rather than "Title says it all". Try summarizing the gist of the page you are linking to.
- tech10171968, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6For those of you asking why someone would want to put Windows on a Mac, I can offer at least one answer:
Unlike a large number of people here, I am not in school; I am an ADULT who actually has to EARN A LIVING, so I rely on my computer (being a tool of my job) to put food on my table and keep me from living under a bridge. As much as I'd love to buy a Mac and run OS X (which is just a souped-up version of FreeBSD anyways), one thing has always kept me from doing so; the fact that 95% of the offices/labs/workshops in the real world run Windows-based work-related applications - my tech shop is no exception. If I walk into my workplace tommorrow morning with that G5 I've always wanted then I seriously handicap my ability to do my job (and pay my rent). Being able to dual-boot XP and OS X would allow me to use a superior OS (OS X) while retaining the ability to run my job-related software (XP). I can keep my job AND indulge in my hobby without having to rely on two computers.
Now you know. - hotwaterham, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"And why would you choose to run such a ***** OS on such a great machine?"
Grow up. Some people are more productive, comfortable, and happy in Windows. - dmron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yah, cool news, but the description of this article is a perfect example of why "no editors" is a bad thing. :P
- vinny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think some of you don't realize how big of a deal this might be. Instead of asking why would you want to put Windows on a Mac, you should be asking why wouldn't you buy a computer that you can put Windows and Mac OS X on? This is the perfect excuse for Windows shops to buy Macs. They can still run their Windows apps and they can test out OS X without an additional investment. If you work in a mixed-shop (PCs and Macs), why wouldn't you buy all Macs?
- crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Put Vista on Intel Mac and see if that'll work.
- seanraf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Macs currently run Apple's own proprietary operating system, which competes with Windows. However, since Windows is much more dominant, Mac users don't necessarily have access to many software programs written only for Windows."
^
Does that seem a bit Apple biased to you?
Anyway, I'm already planning on buying an Intel iMac. This just seals the deal. - bytefoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Uh...the article says NOTHING about this being confirmed. Besides, Apple has said months ago they would do nothing to prevent people from running Windows. Oh wait, that's the same thing this article says...
- ArthurSucks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The Dell, HP, and other PC builders all let out a "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"
- catullus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if this is true and works out seamlessly i'm def getting a mac then. the macOS is better in so many ways, but there are just too many little free apps and stuff that only work for windows to do a permanent switch. this could solve that
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd dual boot OSX on the box I have at home right now. Is the version out now a homebrew? I'd rather just go buy the box and install it like that. I dont want to run a bunch of emulators to get it running.
- hiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"And by the way anybody who prefers XP over OS X has spent less than five minutes with OS X"
14 months here so, by the way, you're wrong. - hipnado, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1gaming, infermon. gaming is the only reason why i would want windows.
- Bigcat1021, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"YAY!!! Bad thing is, it opens OSX up to viruses."
Windows partition? Yes. OSX? No. - hotwaterham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"How about if I defend to the pain?"
I take you that you haven't seen (or at least don't remember this part of...) The Princess Bride!
To the pain...yeouch! :P - squenix1221, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.i-hacked.com/content/view/202/42/
i-hacked builds a $200 PC and runs a hacked version of OSX on it... - bramkok, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1Fu22ba55 u should try Minesweeper.
- oddball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you can put windows on your mac, but not osx on your windows machine (yet, hehe)
- Vektuz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why is this important?
If its true (I'd have to see it for myself), it would convince me to switch.
I develop software. For windows. I'd develop software for the mac too, but windows comes first, due to the install base. Therefore, I have to have windows installed. On a mac (until now) that was not an option. So for my livelihood, I could not use a mac as my primary computer.
Now, if I could dual boot, I could use a Mac as my primary computer ,and the windows machine just for development.
This also means more likelyhood of me porting my apps over to mac.
I'm sure I'm not the only developer with this in mind. - moonaust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just configure the trackpad click for right click, no big deal.
- richard5mith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, you can't dual boot Windows. This is because Apple use the latest Intel BIOS replacement, called EFI. And XP doesn't support EFI, it expects a BIOS. Vista will support EFI, as does 64-bit windows, but current XP does not.
- il0vemymac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Notice this is one of Microsoft's websites telling you this...
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
Mac - Apple is for the lead technical director, screen-writer, animation-artist, post-production, more or less anything that has to do with movies and music. It looks "snazzy" because it can. Apple is expensive because it know's that Peter Jackson or George Lucas is going to use a Apple system with X-Serve and all the goodies, and make about 300 Million dollars. *****, wouldn't you do the same?
WARNING: MAC FANATIC DETECTED! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!
Weta Digital and ILM both use primarily Linux, and *a few* Macs. I'm sure they have some Windows PCs thrown in there too. Star Wars Ep 2 & 3 were made primarily on Linux machines (Dells as a matter of fact) running Maya and custom ILM apps with rendering done on their SGI render farm. ILM is switching away from Irix to Linux completely in the near future and so is SGI itself. Weta used Linux for rendering and for those huge battle simulations, they had a 3,200 CPU Linux cluster during the making of LOTR. They used Macs for compositing.
Many other top companies are also using Linux. Google it. - raboof, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1from the article: ``"Any new machines that are on the market that run Windows are great," said Scott Erickson, director of product management and marketing for Microsoft's Mac business unit.''
So that's "any new machines that don't run the software that my business unit creates are great"?
That's a very interesting opinion there. - zodieman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm waiting for the developer documentation to be updated. I'm curious to see what they did about boot firmware. My money is they have stuck with Open Firmware or moved to EFI. They would be stupid to use BIOS!
- bantam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1vista will work fine.
- tokyopimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is cool, I want to get a MacBook just so I can have a decent lan box. I'll put XP on the box to play games with. And use OSX for everything else. Sounds good to me.
- hollywoodone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hate people commenting on why you would want windows on it. Because frankly, you don't have to put it on, nor did he suggest you do so. The fact is you are able to. You are also able to jump off of a bridge but you don't do it. There is a reason for most things and I'm sure a list could be made of why someone would wan't to dual-boot Windows and Mac OSX on there MacBook Pro.
- Sal42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1not really "you can"... more like "you should be able to" until we see some screen shots and benchmarks. all apple is saying is that they didn't do anything on purpose to prevent it, not that they have tried and tested it and it works but they won't support it. if it works and works well then i am getting a macbook, pronto. next step, have MS update VPC to universal libraries so i can run both OSes at the same time at a decent speed. that would rock!
- embraceware, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think having an option to dual boot Windows is fine. I know when I'm at work I'll find it useful for a few things. Nice to have the option for the rare times. Wish they were shipping today - I got an estimated ship date of Feb 15th.
- vertigoblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the best thing is Its a Gaming MAC!!!
- hotwaterham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great, now if they can come out with a notebook for a decent price I may actually buy one!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES.
Hello triple boot Mac OS X, Windows and Linux. - barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://darwine.opendarwin.org/
- ToeCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I need Windows but not for games (PS2 and XBox fill that need). I need it for MS Access. That's it! That is the only reason my Dell PC still has Windows on it. I boot into Linux by default and reboot to Windows just to convert or mod or copy a MS Access DB. Once WINE can run MS Access then it's good bye Windows XP Pro. I intentionally keep this install devoid of any personal info so I can re-install at any time. WINE usually works great with all of our client's custom apps (90% are VB). Our designer uses Virtual PC and a VB App to submit changes to a client's intranet.
My iBook G4 is a year old and it runs fine. Having a ball writing COCOA apps. This is one of the best ideas Apple has come out with! Provide everyone with dev tools! Not just CLI tools. Will get the Mac Mini once it goes Intel and install MythTV Frontend for Mac OS X. Place this in my Home Theater setup. - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All I can say to this is: AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!
- briansalo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet, I'm definitely saving for it now... I use Fruityloops on Windows, which was the deciding factor (along with other software) on choosing a notebook really, but now it looks like the MacBook might be a better option when I need an upgrade.
- OregonTrail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"This may make my next PC a MAC. That is once they get a gaming grade one out."
Both new MacIntels use this exact chip:
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/ati-x1600-mobility_7.html
Now tell me that's not "gaming grade" enough? - mccarron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They just sold themselves a MacBook. Time to eBay some old PCs.
- sandrino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If MS wants, it can now make a version of VPC that runs Windows natively under OSX (concurently, no dual boot), that would be cool indeed. They might do it just because instead of buying one MS product, you'd have to buy Windows AND VPC. Since VPC keeps Windows in a sandbox, it may be worth it just so you can keep your Mac data safe.
- biff198, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would LOVE a mac that I can boot windows on just to play games. Everyone knows thats basically what people use windows for...
- Shatstorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I remember on digg some time ago when someone posted to an article showing an Apple patent that would run OSX and another operating system simultaneously (some kind of stretch on a virtual machine). wouldn't that mean that the next release of OSX will have dual boot simultaneously? Hope it's no stupid question.
- ronaldpoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the last thing i'd want to do is put windows on a mac... deeeewww
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0does this mean i can have osx on my thinkpad or not
- citrusfizz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Wow citrusfizz so your telling me that linux is superior to OS X? please!!! If you ask me personally Linux is great but not ready as a desktop os yet although it's getting there and I don't think it eill ever catch up with mac os but it sure kick ass as a server OS without a doubt! cause I use debian and os x for everything windows for mic stuff like misc apps like bittorrent etc.."
my point was that linux you actually have choice
and windows you have more choice then osx
and osx is just pretty thats it there is no choice unless you install linux and now it seems you will be able to install windows - Bran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You know whats best about Apple news? Its pisses off so many Windows users, they get all hot and bothered.
- nstern2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd Dual boot for solitaire alone.
- xtremesniper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awsomeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
THIS is the news I was waiting for. Now I have no reason at all to not pick up a Macbook Pro! =D - xedeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow citrusfizz so your telling me that linux is superior to OS X? please!!!
