- transversed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Two of these in one machine will be absolutely ridiculous...
...in that sexy sort of way. - idesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10the 3Ghz Woodcrest ($850) is cheaper than the Conroe Extreme edition ($900 ) @ 2.9ghz, for those who were wondering about pricing.
- Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13As far as pricing goes, keep in mind that these are Pro machines. Pro machines are always pricey (Mac Or PC). People who produce music, do post for TV & movies, design magazines, album covers & movie posters, photography, radio broadcasting and what-not.....they will definitely pull out the credit cards for this machine and future ones like it.
I would think that the average consumer wouldn't require this much processing fire-power and that's O.K. Leopard's probably gonna make your $600 Mac mini run %80 faster anyway (my Mom will be happy)!
I'm in the music business. I'm absolutely counting the minutes until I can run Logic Pro 7 on one these machines with Leopard at the helm.
(Sigh) More good times ahead.
P.S. I played the "Call of Duty 2" demo last night on my iMac! That game kicks ass!!! - Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Ladies and Gentlemen.......start your engines!!!
- rabiddogma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I would guess about the same as the top of the line G5's cost now. They tend to keep basically the same pricing structure for all of their lines.
- shmatt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11still on a 733 g4. these things're gonna feel like a rocket ship to me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16I'm guessing (like the article) that apple will make their new lineup similar to their current one. A single dual-core for the low end(conroe), a faster single dual core for the midrange (conroe) and dual dual-core or the high end (woodcrest).
Apple desperately needs to update their powermac line; its embarassing when compared to any current PCs.
Apple:
Dual-core 2.3GHz PowerPC G5 processor
512MB of 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-4200)
250GB Serial ATA hard drive
16x SuperDrive (double-layer)
NVIDIA GeForce 6600 with 256MB GDDR SDRAM
$2,499.00
Dell XPS 700:
Dual-core 3.0ghz Pentium D
2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz - 2 DIMMs
320GB Serial ATA Harddrive
16x DVD-ROM
16x Dual-Layer DVD+/-R/RW Dvd burner
Dual 256MB nVidia GeForce 7900 GS in SLI
20 inch UltraSharp™ 2007FPW Widescreen Digital Flat Panel
$2503
For $4 more, you get a faster processor, 4 times the memory, more harddrive space, dual optical drives, SLI, and a 20" LCD. I don't understand how Jobs can sell that "Pro" G5 and still sleep at night. - stinkstank, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16Instead of bitching now, why didn't you post it then?
- zaguar, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15But no OS X. Depending on your position - that may be worth more than $4 and SLI, the LCD. the RAM etc.
- Sippi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Noone is puting a gun to your head to buy the G5, so it is up to the buyer if they are willing to spend the cash on a machine like that.
Jobs is able to sleep on piles and piles of $100 bills! - Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10There's validity to your point, diz. My real problem with Dell is the OS it chooses to run it's computer. I'm more of an HP man myself (Wozniak originally wanted to engineer for HP until Jobs convinced him to form Apple Computers).
I'm just terrified of Sony for some reason. A friend of mine in Long Island (software designer) purchased this brand spankin' new spare-no-expense Sony Vaio with XP Pro. It was pretty: Bells, whistles & everything. He had such a miserable XPerience with it. He was compelled to install Win2000 on it just so he can get some work done.
If Dell or HP would just come out with their own OS........ (sigh)
My point is this. If I spend $2500 on a Dell, I'd be terrified every day waiting for the other shoe to drop (and with XP or Vista, it certainly will). When I spend $2500 on a Mac Pro with Leopard, I know I'm in good hands and I will be able to sleep at night as I do now.
The only thing I don't like about the PC world is the OS. I do not knock the PC hardware. I was looking at HP laptops just the other day. They're pretty and I like the keyboard layout. Oh well... - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The G5 is fast, really, really, really fast.
The Woodcrest chip will be Insanely fast!
The Pentium-D is not so fast.. Unless you overclock it and thats just not doable on a Dell. - Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6My brother & I debate this question every day, man! Plus, Intel is promising 32 cores by 2010. It makes me wanna cry.....
- PhillyMJS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I wonder if Apple will expand the product line to have a mid-sized tower . There's a bit of a hole in their non-notebook product line, between the $700 Mac mini and the $1300 iMac. I could see them announcing another machine just called a "Mac" to fill it-- something with the oomph of the iMac but with an upgradable video card and an open internal drive bay or two, maybe even some slots.
Businesses might find that a more palatable alternative to the iMac for administrative employees, and it would also make a nice STFU to all the people who currently piss and moan that they have to spring for a pro-level Mac because they absolutely can't live without internal expansion and/or an upgradable video card. - ampd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6all i know is that I'm saving my pennies and hopefully by the time it comes out I will have enough ($4000) to finally make my switch to macs...
I wont settle for anything less than a complete beast of a machine - panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It is not possible to create a Quad-core machine with Conroe. Since they are already shipping a Quad-core G5, they either have to use Woodcrest to create a Quad-core Intel box or face the backlash of their "new" pro models being perceived as less than the Quad G5.
- LaughingMan11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4But the motherboards that support the Woodcrest are much more expensive than the 975X chipset boards that'll support Conroe... plus FB-DIMM memory ain't cheap.
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4(cue thumping bass line)
Four Xeon cores + OS X: crazy delicious! - laznhome, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Re: scottevans,
The 51xx Xeons are not necessarily all that pricy, they start at $209 - lnxaddct, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7The G5 still smokes the Pentium D (run benchmarks if you want, walk into any Apple store and test it if you don't believe me), and when you buy Apple you're buying more than just the hardware. I guess you've never bought an Apple computer because you don't get that.
- scottevans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ laznhome i just figure apple will put a major premium on them, anyway, seeing as though it will be their premier desktop system. the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. cheers, mate.
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have a feeling the top-of-the-line will be an 8 core model. I think Apple is going to take the opportunity to define themselves as _the_ solution for HD Video production.
- bertdevriese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Isn't Woodcrest the "server version" of the Core CPU, just like Conroe is the "Desktop Version"? Very Weird.. I would have expected Conroe's in the Power Macs and Woodcrests in the new XServes
- futurepastnow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'd be very surprised if they did have SLI or Crossfire. The server chipset Woodcrest uses isn't compatible with either.
- interglenn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Damn, I want one.
Is that a server on your desktop or are you just happy to see me? - Trigonometron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There won't be a backlash if they educate the customers correctly. From what I've heard these chips are realllly fast!
- SpollakPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The real question is whether to wait for the Octo Core Mac Pro. We know the OS supports 8 cores. So why only push out 4 at the mac pro launch :)
- longofest, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@stinkstank: I DID post it a month ago.
http://digg.com/apple/Mac_Pro_To_Continue_Quad-Core_Tradition_Woodcrest_ - startrek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh, I want one. I've been waiting for Jobs to upgrade the Power Mac. I thought it would have some kind of insane amount of power, but this is just insanity! Maybe now I will switch to a Mac.
- Makyla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2man, intel sure does rule!
- agentbillo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I just hope they make the new pro case weigh less than the 47 trillion metric ton depleted uranium G5 case.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm sorry to be blunt, but duh.
What else would power the Mac Pro? Core 2 Duo? A desktop CPU for a workstation? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"When you buy Apple you're buying more than just the hardware. I guess you've never bought an Apple computer because you don't get that."
There isn't anything magical about apple hardware. I own a PPC mac mini, and an homebuilt intel PC. OSX 10.4 runs well on both; better on the intel since it is faster and actually uses the correct voltages for VGA output. The mac mini undervolts and displays a dimmer image on the same monitor. I like OSX a lot, but I don't let my love of apple software cloud my judgement about their hardware.
"Please compare the Quad 2.5GHz G5 pricing too.. why pick a mid range system to say PCs are better?!?"
I picked a midrange system because it is one that consumers are more likely to purchase. I should have added $800 for a 20" LCD to the macs price for a fairer comparison.
"I also wonder if Dell designs the motherboard? "
The Dell uses the BTX formfactor which is similar to the G5 (ducted fans, etc) and has more expansion slots (7 vs 4), more harddrive bays (4 vs 3), and more 5 1/4 bays (2 vs. 1). It is roughly the same size case, and has better features. Apple will def. use BTX for the Mac Pro since is offers a similar layout to the G5, but is a standard and will not involve pointless R&D.
I don't buy the BS about the G5 smoking the Pentium D. In direct mhz to mhz, the g5 is faster than a P4, but the dell has a 30% clockspeed advantage. - bugfaceuk, on 10/12/2007, -9/+10Vampires don't sleep at night.
- AhmedB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Scrolls like butter!
- erikbaca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What kind of graphics will be in these?
- 5thfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Read the article...
"Though the chips are almost architecturally identical to Intel's upcoming line of Core 2 Duo Extreme desktop processor (code-named "Conroe"), they differ in that they'll utilize the company's new Land Grid Array (LGA) 771 socket and also allow for multiple processor configurations." - Tony_42, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I agree, but metric tons are actually spelled "tonne".
- mistercoffee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To Ricedog: there are forums out there that teach you how to flash almost any PC video card for use in the Mac... My G5 Quad now runs a 512MB 7900 that was originally for a PC... cost me $100 to flash it (I had someone do it b/c I didn't trust myself), but the thing is a rocketship and is rock solid. Do some searching, and spend some time over at xlr8yourmac.com to find the vid card flashing forums.
- wilsonics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe it will support even more cores with the 10.5 release! ;) I'm gonna mod the shizzy out of mine. Plus, you have to look at it this way, the Xeon is a 64bit chip...BAM! Performance enhancement right there baby!
- bertdevriese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1as reaction to in reply to my post
dpcamp:
woodcrest (code name) is shipped as a Xeon CPU, but the technology behind Woodcrest, Conroe and Merom (Intel Core) is actually brand new - cubeeggs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2According to http://www.systemshootouts.org/processors.html , the 2.0 GHz Core Duo iMac is faster than both the 2.3 GHz PowerMac and the Dell you mentioned.
- dawks-, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is Conroe (dekstop), Merom (portable) and Woodcrest (server). They are using the Server chip in their Pro workstations.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm just looking forward to a Macbook Pro running on a Core Duo 2 with Leopard.
*fanboy drool* - dzarkw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not in a huge rush to upgrade my system, so I think what I will do is wait unitl CS3 comes out (Q2 next year) and by then we will hopefully be in Rev. B of the Mac Pros and there will be an 8 core model I can get my hands on. That thing will be a beast. (hopefully some new displays, too)
- gregpen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Our Quad G5s at SDSU nuke our PCs at rendering in After Effects. Enter XGrid. Now we have a total of 80 CPUs in our 20 G5 lab that can render one project ;-) . A hell of a render farm ;-) Now if Apple rolls in XSAN into Leopard, that would be really sweeeeet...
- dpcamp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1yeah it seems odd to me that they are using a server chip for a workstation.. isn't the xeon chip old technology anyways??
- asiafasthosts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm dying to update my XServe's to Intel.... come on Job's, get yr finger out!!!!!
- scottevans, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8that thing's gonna cost a fortune. start selling your non-vital limbs and organs now!!!
