- Oakes, on 10/10/2007, -3/+143They should just include an external USB DVD drive that people could leave at home. Even if you don't watch DVDs or rip CDs, it's still necessary for restoring OS X and installing things like iWork.
- drouk1556, on 10/10/2007, -6/+125I'm hoping it has a Betamax player built right in. That would be a pinnacle of notebook achievement.
- Bartboy919, on 10/10/2007, -8/+66Question: how do you rip a movie without a DVD drive? And yes, you could potential get an external but that would be a hassle.
- TSSaloic, on 10/10/2007, -29/+85Bad Idea, I want to watch movies on a screen that nice. Also I don't want to buy them twice.
- USB2point0, on 10/10/2007, -15/+65BD RW, and I'm in for sure! Complete desktop replacment.
HOwever.... this rumor about no optical drive? How do I rip my music that I still buy from CDS!!
Steve: Just download it from iTunes
ME: Oh ok Steve, I'll do whatever you say! Wait, what if I want to put it on something that's not Apple?
Steve: Why would you ever want to do that? BUY APPLE PRODUCTS! Oh yeah, you can buy our iTunes PLus songs.
ME: BUt that's only EMI, Steve.
Steve: And now to our new iPhone...... - cave, on 10/10/2007, -31/+71I would hope so. Disc drives in laptops are pointless in my opinion. If you wanna watch a movie on the road, just rip it. That way your battery won't be nearly dead by the time the movie finishes. Apple were the first to ditch the floppy anyways, maybe they will lead the pack again.
- mparker7410, on 10/10/2007, -11/+50Anybody who thinks removing the DVD drive is a good idea is a thieving pirate.
- skoles, on 10/23/2007, -3/+42This would really make their iLife bundle completely useless since almost all of the programs revolve around CD's & DVD creation.
- dimplemonkey, on 10/10/2007, -3/+39I recall seeing an Apple patent which had the disc drive on the bottom of the notebook. Could this possibly be where it is going?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+32YAAAR!!!
- justinjstark, on 10/10/2007, -10/+40You could always plug in an external drive. I really hope Apple follows through and removes the dvd drives.
- lukee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+30Would you watch them in a box? Would you watch them with a fox?
- vtnerd, on 10/10/2007, -13/+43This is nothing new. The non-overpriced PC's (aka laptops running Windows) have had versions without internal CD players for quite some time now.
- dunderballer, on 10/10/2007, -4/+30Yeah, I'd be all for that. An external drive would be fine for home and work.
- jjesusfreak01, on 10/10/2007, -11/+36You must be one of those people who thinks iTunes movie quality is Da Bomb!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+26They could ship the restore cd on a jumpdrive, that would be cool
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+27I honestly have used my DVD drive on my computer twice this year, both to burn a cd while my iPod was out on service. I could honestly go without a drive in favour of a thinner notebook with a better battery life that is for sure.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+26I can't believe this site is being serious about not needing them. Do you know how ***** hard it was to get people to stop using those god damned floppy drives? It took a decade at least.
How many college kids would be without a way of burning cds for their car stereos? - brutalentropy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+25Would you watch them on a Mac? Would you use them while on crack?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20Why don't you just rip the movies from your DVD collection so you don't need the drive?
.. oh yea... thats right - s1mph0ny, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Terrorist!
- Kazbaeden, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16But the notebook PCs without dvd drives are the ultra-thin ones which ARE overpriced. Twisted isn't it?
- Kaosu, on 10/10/2007, -7/+23This is stupid. I'm not downloading the entire WoW installation (w/ BC and patches), Any other PC game (piracy or digital download), or being forced to pirate OS 10.6 Lion just to install it on my laptop. Having to use an external drive as a middle man is just ***** stupid and too much hassle for the average user. Apple is not stupid. If battery life is so important why can't the entire drive be shut off until it is needed?
- KyleMistry, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15And some people DON'T.
- Bartboy919, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17I would say no, Apple like its computers to be "feature complete" they would never do away with the DVD drive.
- insomniac8400, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17Now that they have external usb burners that are powered via the usb port, there is no need to have the dvd burner built in.
- Almadiel, on 10/10/2007, -4/+18Given that apple doesn't have an online software distribution method, this wouldn't be a very good idea. But apple does have a history of abandoning technology before there is a working alternative in place.
- daldredge, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16You haven't thought that through have you?
- neuropsychguy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15You buy a MacBook for gaming?
- phoomp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12ummm ... Handbrake?
- sneeka2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12So an external drive would actually be the perfect solution. Since the "format-war" is still going on, you'll eventually need an HD-DVD, Blue-Ray and normal old CD/DVD drive anyway. Since there's no combi player in slim form yet, it's logical to leave it out completely and offer only external solutions...
/methinksaloud
Having said that, if they don't bundle a drive, like Sony did with some models, f*ck it! - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11FireWire?
- Shorties, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11I agree but when you only have 2 companies providing content for the iTunes store the is no reason to get rid of the dvd player.
- zombies187, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I wish I could digg you twice. oh, good. :)
- noreturn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Or one of those people that uses this newfangled "BitTorrent" technology..
- damentz, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13Some people don't even load the OS and immediately format the drive. What happens when they realize they don't have a CD or DVD drive?
- softwareperson, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12I would love it if Apple got rid of the internal DVD drive, its a power, space, and weight hog that very rarely gets used. Please just include an external USB DVD drive for those rare times we laptop owners actually need it.
- davidlitts, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12I have to say, i understand dropping the dvd drive, but not at this point, most people aren't as tech savvy as we'd like to think they are. I always though of apple computers to be people computers, most people don't rip, sync, or do anything besides put in a disk to watch movies.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11That would be a good idea, just make it removable, or ship the new macbooks with an external
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Yeah lenovo has done that for a while with there x series.
- mal1964, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12I will carry the extra 6 oz and 8 of a inch to have a dvd player.
- arjung, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9it supposedly comes with an external. then you use handbrake.
- seventoes, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12Retarded.
- fatbobsmith, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Apple has been toying for a year or two with having a write-protected internal solid-state hard drive for the OS and a standard hard drive for read/write. No need for a restore CD if that's the case, as the restore would be housed on the solid-state drive. It would also provide a speed increase and use less battery power.
- Electric_Sheep, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Weird. Tell your professor to get out of the stone ages. We are required to hand work in on a USB stick!
- hybrid8, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9am i missing something with the random capitals?
- llsethj, on 10/10/2007, -5/+13agreed- tho apple isn't the 1st to ditch optical drives.
- andejp12, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I hear you about the floppy drive. I had a professor three years ago now that required us to use floppies to turn in our programs (simple java crap). I asked if I could e-mail them to her or burn a CD and was met with a firm no. Talk about a little behind the times. I had to buy an external floppy drive just for one damn teacher.
To stay on topic. I'd love the idea of this as long as in the box there is an external drive for when I want to use it. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9What the ***** are you talking about? How is it fairweather to switch brands if the brand that you like no longer offers what you want? IT would be the most pathetic bling sheep "Brand loyalty" to stay for the brand name alone even if it no longer offers what I want.
I love Coca Cola. Will never touch Pepsi. However, if Coca Cola no longer offered Coca Cola Classic, I would not continue drinking Sprint, or Fresca, or Diet Coke just for the brand. - Dumbledorito, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I recall recently an article that mocked a PC user for needing an external DvD drive with her laptop (and he was roundly criticized for comparing his Mac to what was obviously a 3 to 5 year old PC lappy). Besides, unless you run it off the USB port (is that being made by anyone?) you're going to need another source of power for the drive.
