- hazard99, on 01/21/2009, -32/+508I hate these Windows and Apple factions. Its so ***** pretentious. Pick one you like, use it, and shut the ***** up.
- Darkyuubi, on 01/21/2009, -35/+385Flame war in 3...2...1
But I agree with the article. - twon, on 01/21/2009, -14/+216*scared to leave a comment on this article*
Ok, my laptop is a MacBook. From my experiences I thought vista was horrrrrible. I installed the Windows 7 beta to give it a chance and because i enjoy beta software...
i'll be honest. it's really good. I expected it was going to be horrible, but it's really not. I do find the new taskbar to be just as good, if not better, than the dock. It is aesthetically pleasing and really fast. Think whatever you want of the companies, but Windows 7 is a complete turnaround for the OS and MS was incredibly smart to do the open beta for it. I might even buy it when it comes out. - stvidguy, on 01/21/2009, -15/+159I haven't used this yet, but it seems like a fair idea. Not sure what's wrong with the OSX doc though really.
- stewacide, on 01/22/2009, -18/+151Um, anyone looking for a particular window in OSX would use Expose.
- mcorto, on 01/22/2009, -4/+135Hey boss, I've finished the "Windows 7 taskbar Review" article.
Boss: You kidding me?! We need traffic to our website! Rename it as "Windows 7 Taskbar beats Mac OS X's Doc" and let the flame war begin!! Mwhahahaha! - BossKey, on 01/22/2009, -4/+92The OS X Dock could stand some improvement, so I as a Mac user will cheer the Windows 7 taskbar as competition that should improve both platforms eventually.
- ericdano, on 01/22/2009, -8/+83OMG, Windows 7 has Ponies. Freakin PONIES.
- Azerael, on 01/22/2009, -5/+75Why just one? I use both.
- Diggrock, on 01/22/2009, -12/+75Godammit, I hate this ***** on digg. It always ends up a bunch of mac fanboys and windows fanboys making fun of each other for being fanboys. The irony is almost too much to bear.
- gmprunner, on 01/22/2009, -10/+70Me neither, I don't really know why people dislike the Dock so much, I've never encountered any real problems with it.
- RenoKb, on 01/22/2009, -4/+59The problem with the Dock, according to this article, is that it doesn't do what it wasn't designed to do =p
The Dock is for application management - Exposé & cmd+` are for window management.
Both of those are why I loathe working in Windows. Ctrl+` is implemented in a program-by-program basis, and well...Exposé is just too good when tied to a mouse, screw hovering the mouse at the bottom of the screen for a "Live Thumbnail" - I'll just hit mouse button 4 and see all windows of that application at once. - inkswamp, on 01/22/2009, -26/+78Congrats to all you Windows users for the modernized taskbar. Too bad about the operating system though.
(It's a joke but it'll be buried in about 5 seconds.) - nd_miller, on 01/22/2009, -9/+52Been using Vista for 2 weeks now...still haven't found the horrrrrrrible part. Please explain.
- jonpirtle, on 01/22/2009, -16/+59Imitation is the greatest form of flattery
- enantiodromia, on 01/22/2009, -6/+48and you wont. Vista is fine.
- kd420, on 01/21/2009, -14/+56I still can't get used to the whole dock concept. I've tried AWN several times in Ubuntu but always found myself forgetting there was a window open and would end up opening another from the desktop or quicklaunch on my top panel. I guess what the article is saying is that once you get used to it enough, you just instantly go there and don't have to worry whether there is one open or not.
Regardless, I like the 7 bar better than the Mac/AWN layout simply because the system tray is integrated as well, meaning more room up top for windows. I've just messed around with the beta in a VM so far, but it's shaping up to be a big step forward. Vista improved (some) UI aspects, but I see 7 as being a little more adventurous and profound in the changes. - inactive, on 01/22/2009, -8/+50You sir, WIN in my book.
- rickyisawesome, on 01/22/2009, -7/+45dugg for "the IT crowd"
- TruckStuff, on 01/21/2009, -9/+45meh... I can see where some of these things might be "shortcomings" of the Dock if you only use the mouse. Personally, I use the KB for most app navigation, so the combination of the Dock, F8 (All Windows) and F9 (Application Windows) gets me where I need to go.
/shrugs - alexp2ad, on 01/22/2009, -18/+52Without saying which side I'm on (Old Windows, New Windows or Mac), I'm gonna say I really disagree with the article, simply because what you prefer is blatantly a matter of preference.
- quomen, on 01/22/2009, -3/+34This is actually pretty big news, coming from Gizmodo (typically mac biased). However, if this judgment came from Engadget, i'd be REALLY REALLY PIGS FLYING surprised.
- angusware, on 01/22/2009, -10/+41The thing is that on Windows 7 the task-bar is useful and better than the Mac OS X dock would be if you used it in a Windows environment where windows are always maximised. In Mac OS X you have tools like Exposé and Spaces to help you filter through the un-pinned windows which aren't maximised.
Sure it's better than the Mac OS X dock, but only because Windows doesn't have better features to do what the Mac has done for so long. The Mac's use of windows and the way they float over each other is far more effective for some things but it's a bitch to sort though them. - anaesthetica, on 01/22/2009, -42/+73FTFA:
"The OS X Dock operates from a similar standpoint, but Windows 7 takes this (not to mention the translucency gambit) a step further: The visual signification of a running application (versus one that's not and merely "pinned" to the taskbar) is exceptionally subtle—a kind of "glare" appears on the top left corner of the icon and it's faintly outlined. It borders on actively encouraging you to forget the distinction, which as computers become more powerful and applications launch more quickly, matters less and less anyhow."
Hilarious attempt to portray a bug as a feature. Reviewer, "I can't tell what's open and what's not. Awesome feature!" - rssolo23, on 01/22/2009, -3/+32I've upgraded to Windows 7 Beta and I think it's the best improvement Microsoft has made since Windows 95. If you haven't actually used it, you ought to. The functions are somewhat similar, but not all the same as the Apple dock.
And to top it off, there's a lot of ideas that Apple has taken from Microsoft (ex: Spaces was on MSDN way before Apple released it, Spotlight happened during Longhorn Beta, etc) so if you want to defend Apple on this one, consider the reality: no matter what decisions they make off each other, the consumers are the ones winning. That's what matters the most. - GregFD3S, on 01/22/2009, -24/+51Although the Windows 7 taskbar UI is an improvement, I still think the OS X dock is better.
- plainandsimple, on 01/22/2009, -12/+38Did you read the article? The Windows 7 taskbar, or "Superbar", offers more functionality than just launching application (like the Quick Access Toolbar has always done).
You can easily manage windows from it, and can provide more functionality through extensions (Jump Lists) on applications coded for it.
It's not just a Dock, but it extends what the Taskbar has always done - Just more useful and better-looking. - christinme, on 01/22/2009, -7/+31wrong, you can auto hide the dock and problem solved. Not only that but the mac dock takes up less space than the windows taskbar and the dock can be sized to whatever icon size you want. Can't do that with windows.
- freakstyle571, on 01/22/2009, -5/+28A healthy combination of Expose, Spaces, and the Dock make going back to Windows and the taskbar a pretty painful experience. (for me at least)
- Nerobellum, on 01/22/2009, -0/+23Have you never seen a technology virgin go shopping for a computer? I remember taking my niece shopping for a laptop for college. I about threw myself into oncoming traffic when she goes "I dunno, I really liked the background on that one you showed me earlier"
People buy computers and software based on the dumbest things. - inactive, on 01/22/2009, -47/+69Wait a second, I distinctly remember Windows people saying the Dock in OS X was *****, but now that Windows 7 has one, it's now OMG, the greatest thing ever!!!
- rssolo23, on 01/22/2009, -3/+24once you go 7, you'll never go back.
- GregFD3S, on 01/22/2009, -1/+21Ridicules? Isn't that Hurcules' second cousin?
- hardeep1singh, on 01/22/2009, -2/+22WINdows in your macBOOK?
- atrn, on 01/22/2009, -4/+24Command-Tilde
- Azerael, on 01/22/2009, -2/+21you really do like porn that much, huh?
- BlackKnight6, on 01/22/2009, -6/+25What's the bug? He is talking about how the icon has a glare when its actually running and no glare when its not running and stacked when multiple of the same running. Kinda like in OSX and how when a program is running there is the black triangle and when not running, no triangle...
- enantiodromia, on 01/22/2009, -2/+21how on earth do you think Vista is horrible and Windows 7 is really good??
i've been using Windows 7 for 2 weeks now, and i still dont see how its any different than Vista. - blergle, on 01/22/2009, -2/+20What is this 'either / or' business? The article makes it sound as if you have to choose between OSX and Windows. Firstly there are other operating systems, secondly you can have both. Thirdly people don't choose their computer based on the dock the OS has.
- MrShibby, on 01/22/2009, -5/+23exactly what i thought... no better way to find a window! get the expose effect in windows and it will kick nuts :P
- christinme, on 01/22/2009, -6/+23yeah your ignorant. Expose can be bound to a key or to a corner of the screen. A lot easier clicking on each icon just to see the preview. Not only that but expose works 10 times better and you can see all the previews at once. Windows makes you roll over each button to see a preview.....expose wins.
- drgmdp, on 01/22/2009, -2/+18wouldn't be easier to have 6 windows with 15 tabs each open?
- motivatedguy, on 01/22/2009, -5/+21In defense of OS X, screen management is the realm of the Dock, Expose and Spaces all together.
- Nerobellum, on 01/22/2009, -4/+20Dock isn't in beta. Superbar is.
- CressCrowbits, on 01/22/2009, -3/+18Err, haven't we been able to launch applications from the taskbar since 1995?
- LeviTheSmith, on 01/22/2009, -5/+20In your MacBook?
- Gizza, on 01/22/2009, -2/+17It is much better for that very reason. Now if I need a webpage, I just click the Firefox logo, which is in the same place all the time. If it's already open or not, it doesn't matter.
It's the same for anything. It doesn't matter if it's running or not, you just click it's button which is always located in the same place. - jackcrack7, on 01/22/2009, -3/+18It's because people decided they didn't like Vista because people told them that they shouldn't like it. I can't believe how many people have told me that they don't like Vista because of how slow and unstable it is. When you ask them how long they used it for they almost always say that they haven't used it yet. They've seen screenshots and people have told them that it's buggy but they never actually gave it a shot. Most of the people that I do know that have used Vista actually really like it.
- motivatedguy, on 01/22/2009, -8/+23OS X dock + Expose + Spaces > Windows 7 taskbar
- thisissami, on 01/22/2009, -4/+19I don't see much of a difference between it and the dock in OS X...
EDIT: outside of selecting different windows in the same app. the superbar seems to do that better. outside of that though, it's all a matter of graphics. i'm glad that microsoft moved in this direction though. it's definitely a much better approach to managing your work/gaming/surfing/whatevz on the OS -
