Why free software and Apple's iPhone don't mix

fsf.org — The iPhone is not a "phone" any more than my laptop computer is a phone. The iPhone can make phone calls, but so can my laptop. Just because it fits in your pocket does not mean that it isn't a computer. As the specifications of the hardware and the diversity of available proprietary applications indicate, it's a general-purpose device.

  • randomroyalty, on 07/30/2008, -0/+4I am wondering if Apple is not in violation of the licensing terms of all of the free software they use in the underlying OS....Of course they own one of the big ones (CUPS) but I'm wondering about any of the other non-BSD licensed software that might be on the device.
