- Ireland, on 10/10/2007, -4/+61Not that Gruber ever answers his mail (he says as much on his contact page), but as I said in a comment on that other digg submission;
To Cut/Copy/Paste on the iPhone you touch and hold with one finger to bring up the loupe, position it at the starting point, add a second finger to the iPhone's screen while the loupe is present, and drag the loupe the end point.
Multi-touch allows the iPhone to keep the loupe positioned at the point of the first finger while sensing the addition of the second finger. Adding the second finger brings the iPhone into select mode. When one reaches the end point of their selection all the selected text would be highlighted in pale-blue, as to make it obvious to the user what has being selected (just like on a computer), then and only then should one release their fingers whereby the Cut/Copy/Paste dialog would appear.
For pasting, you bring up the loupe and tap and release a second finger (without moving or dragging the loupe), at which point the dialog pops up for pasting.
I think the above is the simplest and most natural implementation Apple could possibly do, but who knows. I'm only a mere peasant ;) - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -17/+43i can't wait till the day apple brings copy paste to iphone and all the mac fanboys all over the world will be going like "omg wow this is awesome, iphone is the best, microsoft sucks" like copy paste is a revolution in mobile technology.
- billbacon, on 10/10/2007, -9/+30BLAH BLAH BLAH... It should be in there. Add it.
- mono, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21So what's the "think different" Apple way to input my 63 random character WPA wifi key?
- Norse77, on 10/10/2007, -8/+21Enough with the iPhone already, hey, I took a ***** this morning let's talk about that.
- javaroast, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Now I've heard it all... it's GOOD they didn't add copy and paste. Got it. And right is left and up is down. Sheesh. It's a big omission and I'm sure it will be added in the future. Any attempt to make the omission into a good thing it well lame, just like this blog was lame. The iPhone has a big mindshare right now and is a neat piece of technology. It's not necessary to attempt to spin it's shortcomings into strengths. Highlighting it's shortcomings will make it better in the next generations.
- sekhui, on 10/10/2007, -9/+19STOP MAKING ***** EXCUSES.
- chrisgeleven, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12Makes sense.
Could be that they are still doing testing to work out the quirks. - Jpeg2600, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9they don't want us to sms delicious copypasta :(
- misconstrued, on 10/10/2007, -6/+13'i love you'
- insomniac8400, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Easy, so they can release a new model every 6 months that is the exact same hardware, but includes one extra software feature for another 600 bucks. In 3-4 years, the iphone may have all the features of a phone from 4 years ago. And if your a fan boy, you may have bought 8 of them.
- ratbear, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I've never heard a user base rationalize so much....
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7how does copy paste make something look less sexier.
- lazyguy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Wow.
Apple reality distortion field? - weiran, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Linux fanboys.
- arkmannj, on 10/10/2007, -7/+13I don't care why someone "thinks" copy & paste was left out, what I do know is I "know" they need to add this basic feature in an update, and soon.
- Ireland, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Using that way the iPhone cannot possibly know what text you want to select. My way might sound complex, but that's not the same thing as doing it. Adding a second finger and dragging is a natural experience.
- godzillaWax, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9This is everything that's wrong with Apple's design philosophy. They want to dictate to you how to use their product, instead of providing options for how a user wants to use the product.
- Vician, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8The main problem I see with your idea is it doesn't exhibit that quick pick up and do it attitude Apple seems to be attempting to display with the iPhone. I think anything that takes over three sentences to explain how it works isn't going to be a valid choice in Apple's eye. If Apple ends up adding Copy/Paste, it'll probably add some text selection button that drops you into a special view where you can do it all with one finger and click when you're done.
- Ireland, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Same way it works on a computer, auto-scrolling. The iPhone knows when you approaching the edge of the screen, it can scroll slightly as you start to approach the edge.
- surfing, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5It should be just the middle finger
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6what did it look like. what was the consistency like. what did it smell of?
- waterdrop, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Did you wipe?
- chris9902, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8making excuses again. That's not a good sign.
- Lick, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Disabled comments on his blog, scared of *any* feedback?
- gregdigg, on 10/21/2007, -0/+4Why oh why did I click that link?
- lharrod, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4No, you're not. Nor are you alone amidst the army of users that feel compelled to log on and simply type "Who cares?" as a shortcut to thinking and discussing.
- Terh, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6And when Microsoft leaves out basic features, it's a flaw. When Apple does it, it's a quirk.
- akatherder, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I'm not interested in getting an iPhone, but it was cool to hear that they provided ways to accomplish the tasks you would use copy/paste for.
I would say this is an example of Mac's perfectionism gone wrong. They couldn't find a way to do copy/paste perfectly so they just left it out. Unfortunately, copy/paste are fundamental operations for modern computer users. It all boils down to what you expect from a $600 phone. - Homunculiheaded, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6you mean like this: http://vimeo.com/266383
- fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Seems to work well enough for tablet pcs for years.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Apple has no problem with obscure, undiscoverable methods for basic actions. This is the company that routinely picks hotkeys that require you to press three or more keys at once. And that has hidden menu items that only appear if you press modifier keys while the menu's open.
Ever try resizing a Mac OS window from the left side to get it out of your way? First, roll all the way down to the lower right corner of the window and resize it from that little triangle, estimating how far to go. Now roll all the way back up to the title bar so you can move the window itself. Size not right? Do it all over again.
So don't give them too much credit. - Ireland, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3No, not like that. Look at the video and read my comment again. His was has more step and is way nerdy. My way it's "tap and drag", just like 'click and drag' on a computer. When you do it a few times I'm sure it would become second nature. Bring up the loupe, tap, drag, release - easy.
- ariez84, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4There shouldnt be an excuse for leaving out copy and paste. Forcing the user to get use to the keyboard is a lame ass excuse (good thing Apple didnt state this and some fanboy tried to jusify it by coming with something so stupid).
its like Sony leaving out Rumble because its "old technology" and then implementing it as "New and Improve" when they settle the lawsuit and putting back rumble into their controller again. - ZigVicious, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3says Sudowrestler. In a comment.
- freezeout, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Where I come from there's a saying: don't pee on my head and tell me it's raining. The iphone should have cut & paste so stop being such a complacent douche.
- RATIO, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2that's the spirit.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+8When Microsoft does it, it's a gimmick. When Apple does it, it's innovation.
- Jeez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I am more worried about recent reports of dead strips on iphone according to wired. I guess i will wait and see on how apple addresses these issues before buying one.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4This has always been Apple's strong and weak point. They are total control freaks that honestly DO NOT listen to what users want or need.
It's kinda like fascism, its kinda clean and good at the beginning but the restrictions and propaganda eventually make it a nightmare!
Apple provides a product and tells users, this is what they want and somehow get the Macfans to be duped into thinking they take part in the creation. Thus if anything bad is said about Apple, you're attacking macfans directly or are somehow a fan of another group.
That's why Macfans are more of a cult then supporters. - subtle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Hopefully it will be an off button.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2copy pasting not a common task in a web browser?
- judolphin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2That really is BS; in fact, I heard that exact excuse from an Apple Store employee, and I tried not to laugh... most phones support BOTH technologies; why not the iPhone? Not because it couldn't; it's because they wouldn't. If they REALLY wanted market penetration, they wouldn't have signed an exclusive contract with AT&T.
- jtb4, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Why does explaining how to copy and paste take 4 paragraphs?
This whole cut and paste on the iPhone thing sounds like way too much time spent on something that should like take 10 seconds of your life max. - Ireland, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6Sorry, but that's cause Apple tends to do it right.
- Terh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Yes, it is wrong. Making someone do something how you want to instead of giving them the freedom to do things how they want is stupid, and if Apple didn't have such rampant fanboyism, they'd be ridiculed for making inferior products.
Apple's products don't work any better than anything else out there, it's lack of options and increased simplicity that make it easy for morons to understand, so it works "really really well." - guydudeman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2They left it out because they don't *really* love us.
- JohnFrum, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Agreed. Rationalizations like this are really cult like.
- streak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I seriously doubt it was left out by design, but rather it was left out for expediency to market, with the intent of providing cut/copy/paste sometime later.
- bugalou, on 10/10/2007, -10/+12Next update for iPhone will include this feature, then the all the mac zealots will act like it is a revolutionary feature that Apple invented out right.
