- geoken, on 08/22/2009, -5/+46To sum up the article; "Google is evil, I will blindly support any action Apple takes which negatively impacts Google even when it negatively impacts my own user experience. I will now lay out some highly dubious arguments explaining why Google is evil"
- RoroCo, on 08/22/2009, -2/+29Not a great article. One of his biggest statement is why should Apple allow Google to work with their phone since Google is a direct competitor. OK... Then why should Microsoft allow iTunes or QuickTime to run on Windows? The reason MS does this is because it knows the more options their clients have, the more clients they will have.
The bottom line is that this industry is very incestuous. Apple's closed mentality will ultimately hurt them if they see this as a one-way discussion. - DigitalisAkujin, on 08/22/2009, -2/+22Steve Jobs is making the same mistakes he made in the early 90's with the iPhone. Closed platforms tend to fail when open platforms are available instead. You can't see it yet because phone hardware is not up to par yet but give it 2 more generations and you'll be wondering why you can't multitask with your 1.5GHZ phone.
- shamesh, on 08/22/2009, -1/+17I’m surprised that Jason Calacanis is siding with Google: With a snap of their fingers they can put Mahalo out of business
- RamblingSoul, on 08/22/2009, -5/+18Google is not Evil. neither is Apple. They are just two big companies doing what they do best - trying to make more money. get over it
- ozroy, on 08/22/2009, -0/+10"Also frankly the notion that mobile phones should be open is a rather new idea which has never been done before. In fact I don’t know of any other mobile phone company that has been as open as Apple at this point in time."
Um... Has Windows Mobile ever restricted you on what software you can install on your phone?
This article has "Apple Fanboy" written all over it. - adml_shake, on 08/22/2009, -0/+6Hope the author buys something nice with the big check Apple cut him, sheesh.
- phyx726, on 08/22/2009, -0/+6I think this guy doesn't like Google.
- 996turbo, on 08/22/2009, -0/+6Wow, that article is ridiculously badly written. Comma splices, sentences missing key words, mistakes with pluralization...
- fyanardi, on 08/22/2009, -0/+6Dude, open platform is not the same as open source. By open platform he means that anyone can easily build compatible hardware and software for that operating system.
- wastelander, on 08/22/2009, -0/+6Yep, right now Android competes with the iPhone.
Smart move by Apple to keep their products off their phone, that way people who want those products they will have to go over to Android. Eventually the iPhone will no longer be be able to compete.
Problem solved! - ruforealz, on 08/22/2009, -0/+5If there's money to be made on the iPhone, Google will be there
- dennisa31, on 08/22/2009, -2/+6but i love google
- Rudegar, on 08/22/2009, -1/+4and yet ms been making software for macosX for years
- mcosmi, on 08/22/2009, -0/+2me too
- DigitalisAkujin, on 08/22/2009, -1/+3Your an idiot. Where did I mention Windows? I was thinking Android but clearly you have your foot so far up your fanboy ass you can't think clearly.
- shamesh, on 08/23/2009, -0/+2Yeah you are right
- TnTBass, on 08/22/2009, -0/+2Apple should just make their product good enough to compete so people won't want to use Google voice.
- inactive, on 08/22/2009, -0/+2There u go, u read my mind, they are digging their own grave, I just hope Stevie keeps messing it up, maybe in a couple of a years iPhone will be a thing of the past
- ozroy, on 08/22/2009, -0/+2There is a really easy way for Apple to fix all of this.
They should keep the App store with any retarded rules they like, it is their store after all. But in the same way I don't have to use the iTunes music store to put music on my iPod, I should not have to use the App Store to put software on my phone. Let me download the software from any source, and then import it into iTunes the same as mp3s.
Do that and all their problems will go away. The App Store will still be the most popular way to install software, Apple will still make stupid amounts of money off it, but developers will no longer have to worry about wasting their time and Apple will no longer have to worry about accusations of being anti-competative. - mysticalone, on 08/22/2009, -0/+2"If I keep sucking Apple's dick I'm bound to get some yummy applesauce."
- inactive, on 08/23/2009, -0/+1I have a ps3.
- rpgmakr, on 08/23/2009, -0/+1This article is stupid. What if Microsoft bans itunes from the Windows platform? You'd think that's a completely different problem but it's not. Now our cellphones are an extension of our digital life and we wouldn't put up with this kind of ***** in our PCs. Then again, sometimes you can judge a website from the domain name...
- inactive, on 08/22/2009, -2/+3Apple is going to end up in the ***** again under Job's piss poor business management. I would much rather have access to google firmware/ apps on non apple smartphones any day of the week.
- spacerobot, on 08/22/2009, -0/+1Then why don't you marry it?
actually I love it too. - azazel00, on 08/23/2009, -0/+1Wow. Fanboi immaturity at it's best.
I'll admit that Apple is in a pretty good position, but that dosn't mean their practices won't hurt them. I know a lot of people who can afford the iPhone and choose not to buy it. Some of them due to AT&T. Some because it can't multitask. Some because it's not a platform they'd like to develop for. Some because it's Apple.
The iPhone is a great phone. I have a first-gen one. But I think Apple's totalitarian stance on the device (as well as their other products) actually takes away from their otherwise great product. I own a hackintosh because I like their software, but I'm unwilling to overpay for a computer. I could afford it, but I think it's not smart to do it when I can build one on my own.
So stop the angry whining, b*tch. It's not like Steve Jobs ***** gold bricks for you or anything of that sort. - phyx726, on 08/22/2009, -0/+1Yeah, I read that part too.
- kaosethema, on 08/22/2009, -0/+1buried
- geoken, on 08/22/2009, -0/+1I think it may stretch past the iPhone and even threaten ipods (as evidenced by the new creative player which runs android so it can be a viable alternative to the iTouch).
- azazel00, on 08/23/2009, -0/+1Apple is in a position where they can allow the GV app and force AT&T's hand in the matter. They could've suggested the app worked only while connected to Wi-Fi. Phil actually had sort of "vouched" for the app. What's more, AT&T said they hadn't been consulted on the matter.
I think the biggest complaint right now is how your beloved company became AT&T's bitch rather than looking after their overpaying consumers.
You may not like Google Voice, but I do. So don't assume that because you don't like it, nobody else does. (That's Steve's job.) - cliffr39, on 08/22/2009, -0/+0It's not about Google being Apple's competition, it is about allowing the consumer to make choices of what they do with their bought gadget
- snookie1977, on 08/22/2009, -0/+0Android is not even remotely a competitor to the iPhone. Its been out a year. Check the numbers.
- snookie1977, on 08/22/2009, -0/+0Calacanis makes no sense at all. Arrington is full of it. Again. What he is hiding is the Google OS based Crunchpad. All his fake outrage is just a buildup to this item. He better hope Apple doesn't release a tablet because Googles half-baked OS isn't going anywhere unless they decide to get serious about it.
- inactive, on 08/22/2009, -1/+1Well since Linux is completely open, shouldn't it dominate the industry?
While OEMs couldn't advertise other OS's (OS/2 Warp or Linux) on the desktop, they sure did have alot of sway in installing tons of crapware on it. - Unimatrix0, on 08/25/2009, -0/+0I pretty sure that this iPhone i hold in my hand is MINE. It's bought and paid for with my hard earned cash. I'm starting to get a little tired of Apple and AT&T telling me what I can and can't put on, or do with MY phone. If both of these companies continue down this path they will find themselves with a shrinking market.
- geoken, on 08/23/2009, -1/+1The iPhone does not multitask in a practical sense of the word. Being able to run a few select first party apps in the background and full multitasking (being able to run any app in the background are 2 completely different things). Is there a streaming radio player that can run while I'm using another app?
Also, Apple's mistakes in the 90's were just the nails in the coffin. They dug their grave way before that when their closed ecosystem lost out to the open ecosystem (from a hardware perspective) if the IBM compatible clones. - snookie1977, on 08/22/2009, -0/+0Windows Mobile is crap. Always has been and looks like it always will be. But you cannot compare this OS to the iPhone. Apple controls the iPhone more than any other device manufacturer ever has. Normally the carriers have complete control. Of course the carriers, Verizon especially, have restricted both hardware and software features of Windows Mobile. Blackberry devices, and even simple cell phones.
Two points down for using "fanboy". It marks you as a kid and shows no thought or knowledge of the subject. - snookie1977, on 08/22/2009, -1/+0Now thats just funny. Funny in a really Frixion is an idiot sort of way. Because anyone looking at Apple's sales as they go up and up and up would think they are in the best shape they have ever been in and the future is bright.
Most people have never heard of the Google Voice issue and don't care. It will be as a Web App for those who do.
So all the teenagers posting here who have Apple envy because Daddy can't afford an iPhone can go back to your XBox now and ***** PC. - snookie1977, on 08/22/2009, -2/+1The iPhone multitasks to a certain extent but not enough to make it unusable due to poor battery life. The OS is a subset of desktop OS X and is capable of full multitasking right now. Since you have no idea what you are talking about do some research before you post ignorant comments.
The Apple platform has never been closed. Apples mistakes in the early 90's had to do with poor quality hardware and an OS that was way behind the times. Jobs fixed both of those things.
Next idiot please. - snookie1977, on 08/22/2009, -2/+0Stay with me now because I can see another dumb ass posting. Google Voice is in beta. Hardly anyone is using it. Most people don't care and never will about Google Voice. Got that so far? OK lets try this. Google voice features are something a cell carrier would provide, not Apple. Understand? Now..what are you going to do when all the other carriers deny Google Voice? Because they will. I don't give two ***** that Arrington has a special beta version on Android/T-Mobile that no one else has. No carrier wants this app. Part of AT&T's contract with Apple is the stipulation that no VOIP over 3G. Every carrier says the same thing about VOIP over 3G. it will suck up their bandwidth and they will not recover their costs. So rant and rave about everyone not just Apple.
- DanielPhermous, on 08/22/2009, -10/+4You realise Steve Jobs wasn't at Apple until the very late nineties? I mean, he was still around and doing stuff (CEO of Pixar and Next) but I don't think any of it suffered for being closed.
- Lightstab, on 08/22/2009, -15/+4Dude, please do us a favor and STFU. Windows is not an open platform. Linux is an open platform. Can you get the source code for Windows? No.
Then what the hell are you talking about?
The reason Windows became successful has nothing to do with it being open. Businesses standardized on DOS in the eighties and Windows was built on top of DOS, so it was easy for businesses to upgrade to Windows. Microsoft then made deals with OEMs to install their OS by default on their computers. Their contracts wouldn't even allow for other OSes to be advertised as being compatible with a PC.
In the end Apple lost because they didn't get a patent on the Windows interface and a loophole in their contract with Microsoft allowed Microsoft to start developing competing software a year after the Mac came out, which was supposed to be 1982. The only problem with this is that the Mac got delayed two years until 1984 and no one thought to update the contract to reflect that.
