- qpid, on 10/12/2007, -12/+37Or maybe they will never make an iphone
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22I've thought about this too myself. Given that there are very few Apple stores in Europe, it would be difficult for Apple to pull this off worldwide. Unless they sell it through shops here, as they do with the iPod. If Apple can form their own MVNO and sell through shops like Argos and Xtravision then it just may work.
On a side note, I personally think that Apple intends to bring full Voip functionality to iChat 4.0 for Leopard, it will work with the iPhone seamlessly.. AND.. wait for it, iChat 4.0 will be also released for Windows. iTunes was released for Windows, and iChat will follow in its footsteps. Mark my words. - corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I believe they're taking their time for a few reasons. A) They want the product to be kickass. B) They don't see much competition yet in the market so they know they have time to tweak the product to their liking before putting it in the market.
It's all about timing. - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@ Splizxer, I haven't called anyone an idiot for a while, so I resist the temptation to do it now.
- forgiste, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They could sell them unlocked with a SIM card slot...
And then later introduce the model bundled with a service plan for cheaper. - setUonfire, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I bet they are working on integrating the iPhone into a robotic animal thing like Aibo, and calling it the iCat. The iCat will follow you around, answer calls for you, fetch your newspapers, and protect you from iGrizzlyBears. But be careful, don't plug your mouse into the iCat's USB port!
The iCat will be fully integrated with Leopard. They'll be the best of buddies. - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Timing 'is' very important. I think we can all take a guess that the iPhone wont be a complete pile of crap, given Apple's recent track record with the iPod. And it's taking so long, we can also assume that Apple has studied the market very carefully. If the iPhone is as good as most expect it to be, then I want it now, but.. I personally would rather wait until next year if it means them getting all aspects of it right, like reception, user interface and looks.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2spot on. but do americans even know of the services they are missing out on? not that the digg crowd is mainly american ( i dont have a clue ) but europe/asia has phones the US gets years after.
If you want a badass phone, you will spend a badass amount of money. 299USD for a v3? phst, they give them away now. US phone companies make me sick. - cheez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2why can't they sell the iphone in a store? I don't buy my phones from my mobile provider
- winmac96, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2iPhone, if it ever comes out of the labs, will not be CDMA or GSM or UMTS or any of the bull-crap expen$ive ***** we all have to pay each month!
The iPhone will be a communicator iPod over FREE...and I mean, FREE standards-based air link (Bluetooth, wi-fi G/N/A, UWB, WiMax, whatever) using standard VoIP protocols supporting iChat, Skype, Vonage, etc.
So stop dreamin' about a cell phone iPod. Enough already of this BS talk! - Mikecol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There should be a rumors section under Technology, but it shouldn't be limited to Apple rumors.
- sovereign3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You sound like a cynic.
- Mikecol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Use the reply button.
- rkettner, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Sure they will... but there is no reason to launch it during the holiday season. Phones don't make as good of gifts as iPods. Why not let everyone buy each other ipods, and then launch a phone in the new year? Makes some sense to me... but it is just speculation.
- Clodagh, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Nobody wants what?
- winmac96, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This little fact of yours did not prevent the Linksys, the Dlinks, or the Netgears from releasing pre-N routers and APs. Why would Apple not use one that is a sure winner (Broadcom's) like they did with Airport Extreme pre-G?
This way, those bs N Task Groups come to their senses and settle on a standard that Apple just chose. Sounds like a winner to me. - rykachik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think you guys are right. The iphone will use a future release of ichat to make voip calls. I think the main thing holding back the iphone is the price, as mentioned in the article.
I disagree that apple is holding back because they do not want to go through phone companies, I think they are holding back because the cost of making one is too high. The patent apple just got allows for a touch screen display to change based on what "mode" it is in (ie ipod/music mode shows a clickwheel, phone mode shows a keypad). I think this is how the phone will work once they figure out how to manufacture then cheap enough. - sovereign3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's great to see an article from one of my favorite news sources on Digg (The Economist).
I think the iPhone might just be a fantasy for Apple fans and users. While it could certainly be a hit, I just don't think Apple has the capabilities to do any of the options the article mentioned. I couldn't imagine a co-branded version of the phone with a Motorola. I certainly couldn't imagine Apple setting up its own mobile network. It's far too costly and diverges dramatically from Apple's main business of producing computer hardware.
While iPhone is good in concept, maybe it's not within Apple's area of expertise. - cheez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2but selling the phone in the apple store would conrol the customer service experience, at least for the hardware. It's definately worth buying an unbranded phone. I wouldn't buy a branded iphone
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@winmac
until the IEEE ( and not some other group/company ) decides 11n is ready ( 2008+ ) then I would not buy it. It might work, but it will not be standard just half baked. - omaryak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1An iPhone would be remarkably similar to a PDA, a market from which Apple has already withdrawn. So it is possible that a phone is beyond what Apple wants to do. But I mourn the fact that I can't have a phone that matches the simplicity and design of the iPod. I also mourn the fact that the only (branded) choice for mobile software is Windows Mobile. What Windows Mobile tries to do with Outlook Express, Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer, Apple could easily do with Mac Mail, iTunes/QuickTime and Safari. But it would be a huge leap in engineering and a major shift of the company's focus. Still, I hope against hope that my next phone will bear the Apple logo. I think the existing phone manufacturers suck on the whole, though Samsung and Nokia do a decent job.
- Splizxer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is the typical macrophiliac response, instead of saying someone is an idiot, you must portray yourself as "better" by saying something witty. You sir, are a bewn.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Chocolate..."tastes great , less filling" that`s why.
- Rudrasksha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1more like 50 stories an hour
- Mikecol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Motorola didn't make an iPod phone, they made an iTunes phone.
- omaryak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It would be more expensive. Wireless carriers subsidize mobile handset. And if you read the article, Apple may be hesitating to put the Apple brand somewhere they can't control the customer service experience.
- shodson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Who cares about iPhone, when are they going to release new Macbook/Macbook Pros with Core 2 Duo chips? Dell and HP already have their's out...
- ratzfatz, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8Yeah - that's probably the main reason. Good guess.
BTW
"want's" - interesting use for an apostrophe. ;-) - Arkonnan, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7> Why Apple is taking its time in launching an iPhone
The simple answer: $$$
Apple knows that every die-hard fanboy will buy anything they release. So they can get away with releasing a new device every six months with only minor updates which are either cosmetic or could be handled with a simple software update. They can hold off on releasing the phone for another year knowing full well that people will not only buy each ipod release, but will also buy the phone when it finally does debut.
Behold the power of the black turtle neck. - robsonde, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2could we get a new catergory for digg??
apple rumors.
it would get about 50 stories a day.
come to think of it that could make a good website...... wait, er, no. - henrik.falk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Who really wants i iPod phone? Plus, Motorola already made some.
- kingkilr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Because they want to make it perfect?
They are like Blizzard, they will take forever to get something right. - ratzfatz, on 10/12/2007, -14/+12The Economist got stuck half way. My opinion:
1. The reason Apple isn't ready to roll out iTV is about the missing new 802.11 standard which is needed to transfer (almost) HDTV content wireless.
2. The reason Apple isn't ready to roll out the iPhone is about the same. Missing standards.
Apple won't enter the phone market with a phone. They'll show up with a solution. The phone will connect to the new wireless standard, enables you to bypass GSM in areas where a (not shown yet) new Airport "Super-Extreme" base-station will be around. The new revamped .mac services will have a new extension: voice over IP. By combining the new Airport generation with the iPhone, Apple will enter the VoIP and GSM market with a device, which is not fairly new (remember - the iPod concept wasn't new at all) but a unique combination of an infrastructure, Apple already has.
Imagine: Having a Mac and a .mac account means: free phone calls in the home zone with the iPhone. You're connected to "rest of the world" via GSM.
Let's see what happens NeXT.
A new cube? I bet. - tucsonwc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2If Apple becomes an MVNO and IF their phone is compelling as a device, my family will swtich over to it. The existing wireless carriers so hobble their phones that it is insane.
- winmac96, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Nah..sounds like a pathetic cult follower...
- pankajsharma, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Because its too much too soon for Steve Jobs. He needs something big for his next keynote address, around the Christmas time. Also he needs time to address issues with MBP, MB, new iPods (may be).
- SadPanda, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0"They are like Blizzard, they will take forever to get something right."
Well put...
Really though, speculation at this point is worthless (even if it's fun) there are limitless possibilities of what apple could do with this proposed iPhone... - wphj, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4I think it's not nearly as far fetched as it seems at first.
It would be done to protect the iPod. Eventually, music phones will be good enough to stop people from paying the extra money to get an iPod.
It's not happening much now, but it will. - AssProphet, on 10/12/2007, -15/+9You sound like a babbling fan-boy.
While you could have made a good point about standards, Your "too good to be true" fantasy smells like candied *****. And the corny "NeXT" line, ouch, that was painful. - nrecob, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2because they like to sit back and watch all your stupid apple fanboys cream your pants over a product they aren't even making.
Yup! iPhones are for iIdiots ;) - Splizxer, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3They just need to get U2 to use it for a while, then all the Mac bewns will buy it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3because they like to sit back and watch all your stupid apple fanboys cream your pants over a product they aren't even making.
let alone they can't yet pack all the gadgets fanboys magicly attribute to an iphone without it having about 30 minutes of battery life. - tafkase7en, on 10/12/2007, -22/+6"Why Apple is taking its time in launching an iPhone"
Because nobody want's one?

What is Digg?
