- allaboutdatiki, on 10/10/2007, -2/+51It's all about the hands-on.
I didn't *really* want an iPhone until after I spent half an hour with one in an Apple Store. - iching, on 10/10/2007, -3/+42Why ATT sucks.............insert reason here
warrant-less wiretaps, coverage, lock in contracts......they just suck. - kaiyraa, on 10/10/2007, -5/+28The real reason is they get no comission on any part of the sale, so why should they pretend to care about you or the phone?
- jdh24, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22AT&T sucks at selling iphones because of its service. i would LOVE to see an iphone on the virgin mobile network, since virgin mobile rates are a hell of a lot better for non- teenage girls.
- Kwinti, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22The hell are you talking about? When you buy an iPhone, AT&T gets this fancy thing called a customer
- dallyp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19I don't know if it does anymore, but the last time I went to my ATT store, there was a giant display that said "iPhone" with the demo of the iPhone playing on a screen, and two iPhones attached to it for trying out.
- adml_shake, on 10/10/2007, -7/+25Not bashing apple or anything, but I decided to not get one after I played with one for a while.
- waterdrop, on 10/10/2007, -9/+21I went into my local AT&T Store hoping to try out an iPhone for the first time. I walked in and to my surprise there was no iPhones in sight at all. I have still not tried the iPhone to this day. The closest Apple Store is an hour away and I personally don't like going into Apple Stores because the smug levels are just way to high. AT&T needs to launch iPhone demo units so I can try out an iPhone and breath at the same time.
- mraustin1337, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14The salespeople make no commission from them so they try not to sell them.
Get one. - zengonzo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8This is a modern economy. Customers are to be loathed and detested, and have their money squeezed out in any manner possible - litigation, in some cases.
Customers will complain about increases in costs without comparable increases in services. Market domination is the only reasonable way to constantly increase profits. - rebrad, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Birds of a feather?
- Murdats, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9and the salesperson cares about that why?
the sales person would rather you buy a real phone so they get paid. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7my AT&T store has 10 iPhones all lined up nicely on a table with full internet service and even free calls but then again i live in Orlando Florida near the most expensive mall in America so i guess that could be why...
- tyywebb, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Looks like people who have Apple news turned off won't be getting any news today.
- rudy23, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9which carrier doesnt have lock in contracts?
att range for me is pretty good here in the tri state area. dunno why people have to bitch about it so much. works just fine for me. - liuping, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Same here. They must vary a lot by location.
- rudy23, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6we have a semi big cingular store here in ny and it has big ass iphone video displays showing features along with wifi conneted iphones to test it live. must be the shady dealers who dont keep it cos they keep getting stolen. besides the iPhone isnt the only thing for them you know
- doubleaught, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Well we do know Apple didn't approach AT&T first. At least Verizon was approached, I have no proof of others but who knows. It's worth noting we have no idea who was being unreasonable there, coulda been Verizon or Apple, or both.
Personally, I would either own an iPhone now or be planning to buy the next revision if Verizon was the service provider. Won't touch AT&T with a ten foot stick! - CrankyMcGuy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I don't understand this comment. "Smug levels"? In the Salt Lake Apple store there are gaping, gawking, smiling, talking people using demos all over the store. The dozen or so Apple employees are all busy demonstrating units to eager customers. The genius bar is filled with helpful staff on one side and very anxious owners on the other. Some people are pleased. Some people are curious. The people leaving the store with product are hardly skipping and jumping for joy, nor do they look like vapid Stepford Customers. Nobody is smug. Did you meet the one jerk in your state and paint all Apple store customers with the same brush? Seems to me you enter an Apple store carrying an awful lot of bias.
- jamesrouse, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I am a retail sales consultant at AT&T in Owensboro, KY (population about 100,00) and we have 2 iPhone displays. One of them has 3 on it and the other has 2. All 5 are attached to our WiFi and are completely live models, they are even loaded with music. We even have 2 store demos that reps get to carry. Oh and all customers are on summarized billing now by the way.
- youareretarded, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Chances are that these idiots that didn't see the iphone went into a dealer location which in fact, does NOT carry the iphone.
- rebrad, on 10/10/2007, -7/+10I don't want an iPhone until I can pick up one free with a 2 year plan. It won't be long, probably around Christmas.
- jonshipman, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5and you wouldn't look smug walking around with an iPhone?
- glialisback, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Same here too. The display was almost in the front door and unavoidable.
- skellener, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3AT&T has a lot of phones to sell. Apple has only one. It makes sense that AT&T wouldn't necessarily push one over the other. I mean, they are the only carrier that has the iPhone anyway. Apple has only one device that is an phone. Of course they are going to push it.
- nitroburn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I just got back from the AT&T store in Bellingham Washington and there were at least 6 iPhones on display and they we're on display also when I was there last weekend. There we're also banners in the store and on the windows stating that they have the iPhone and it is in stock.
Must be the location you went to, because they aren't all like that.
If anything, you should say they suck because they keep allowing us Canadians to come down there and buy them. j/k :P - CLShortFuse, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2There's a store near my house that isn't an official AT&T store but it is an authorized reseller. I wanted to get an 8525 when it came out. The guy said he didn't have one and wouldn't sell them at his store. The reason why, as he explained, I could understand. He has to pay, out of his pocket, for the device and then resell it to make profit. It's a $500 device. AT&T will reemburse him for upgrades and special discounts but he needs to pay for the phone in near full. Now the iPhone is a $600 device. Also, this is not the same as an AT&T corporate store. Most AT&T stores you see are just authorized resellers. To be an authorized reseller all you need is the sum of money to buy a bunch of phones and put it on display however you want.
- Speed, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Great, but how does that benefit the salesman who's working off commission and gets none from the iPhone. Do not confuse the employees wit the company they work for. They have different interests. The low-level employees don't get bonuses when the company is doing well (some exceptions, but over all, it doesn't work that way most of the time), so all they care about is getting paid and keeping the job. They don't care if the company is only make $1 million profit instead of $16 million.
- mr804, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3The AT&T store here has a HUGE iphone display. with demos and crap. I'm not sure if they have any for hands on though. (Virginia Beach, VA)
- Konrad9, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I've been in three different AT&T stores lately and.. they all had big iPhone displays, with 2 or 3 you could play with.
- Anevilweasel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I live close to a smaller AT&T store and they have a small iPhone display. All I can say is it is a nicer display than any of the other phones have. Two iPhones out for people to play with internet access on them and everything.
- woofers07, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Can we include censoring freedom of political speech somewhere in there as well?
- moosepile, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Business users would. Sure, there are some hard-assed (and maybe rightfully so) companies out there, but there are many MANY more that say "go get the phone you need". And when one is going to get the phone they "need", the invoice is in much better shape when it shows up with an AT&T logo as opposed to an Apple logo.
- diggerphelps, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Newsflash: you can get pretty much get ANY GSM phone ATT sells unlocked.
The difference is they're not subsidized so they cost more. The iPhone is not (overtly anyway) subsidized, so if you are leet enuf to unlock it yourself, then you will pay the same price. - diggerphelps, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3AT&T stores suck at selling everything. My last phone I bought unlocked online, as AT&T (Cingular then) only pushes the two or three phones THEY want people to have (and thus everybody has them) and don't work too hard to sell the others. Plus the stores are always crowded with idiots asking stupid questions of the clueless staff.
- mswope, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3AT&T is not really in the business of selling phones. They sell services that run on the phones. They don't care if they have to give the phones away or if you like the "red one" or whatever. They want you to buy "lines" of service. Sort of like the razors vs. razor blades thing.
- winmywii, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I also had the experience of using one at an at&t store. It was a nice phone, but my fingers are too big for the keys.
- cleverboy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4LOL. I saw you on TUAW. I'll, um... pray for you or something. Hopefully you can get something that eventually salves your burns. I walked through the "fire" and didn't get singed at all, this is the best device I've ever purchased, and now more people can afford it. Cool beans to me.
- Whammo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2My iPhone experience: iPhone display with two phones, burly guard leaning on them blocking access. I asked if I could look at them, he moved a way. They were both broken. :p
P.S. I ended up resigning with Verizon. - youareretarded, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2lol KenIovino's comment reminded me of the south park episode where everyone bought a hybrid and enjoyed the smell of their own farts, then the smug storm hit.
What a douche! - aptasi, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I'm surprised to read so many negative vibes towards AT&T stores. I've been VERY impressed with the two former Cingular stores in my area (Twin Cities, MN, USA). I was comparing the iPhone versus Blackberry options, and both stores had 1) surprisingly good technical people help me out, 2) working iPhone demo phones (plural), and 3) iPhones on hand to sell. I ended buying a Blackberry after meeting with the store manager and one of his techs, who was actually able to answer quite a few questions about the Blackberry Enterprise Server. I was impressed enough with the iPhone, though, that my wife will probably be getting one to replace her T-Mobile (yech) Sidekick2.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Business users would never even THINK about getting the iPhone. It is vastly inferior for business purposes to other cheper options. Even with the price cuts. And business users are generally getting their phones bought for them. They have no say in what they get.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Motorolla, LG, Apple, and other cellphone companies thank you for your ability to throw money around, especially for things you know will drop in price significantly in short time. As for the rest of us...
- Plezops, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Both of my local ATT stores have the iPhone banners on the front windows and 2 or 4 iPhones (one with 2 and one with 4) out on display... they just never have any in stock if you ask to buy one...
- youareretarded, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I guess they can't handle the truth and have to digg you down.
I myself prefer the truth, so I'll digg you up;) - youareretarded, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2You are an idiot, salesmen do in fact make commission off of them.
- fortezza, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1On the bright side, they have great Cell phone coverage area. I was with Sprint, T-mobile before them, and had no signal for most of the day. I switched to ATT, and now I have signal all day long. Got Signal?
- fortezza, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Good for them. Less iPhone spam that I have to block out. Now, please turn off your stupid iPhone and go outside.
Thank you for reading. - getrealnow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Virgin Mobile
- youareretarded, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Correction, they DID send you large bills but they don't do that any longer.
Maybe you missed that article on digg;) -
