Live coverage:
http://live.macobserver.com/article/2005/10/specialevent_keynote.shtml - belgar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just tried to snag this week's "free" song. Note:
"Purchase of this item is not currently available. THis item is being modified. Please try again later."
I call real. And, anyone who *doesn't* think this event is related to video is retarded. The red curtain is the same one used as the iMovie backdrop. And Apple's use of "One more thing..." as the tag line is strongly indicative of a paradigm shift. If you're a longtime Apple watcher, you know the significance of that statement. :) - kristin364, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.apple.com/itunes/
It's Here people - Ultim8Fury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2curious. As mentioned above iTunes 5.0 is barely a couple of months old. Surely they wouldn't have bothered if 6.0 was so close to launch. I wait with baited breath for today's news from Apple.
Here's to video iPods, G5 Powerbooks and Unicorns. Mythical beasts one and all. - phantomstealth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No Way! the wouldn't ever make you pay to use itunes.. pay to pay to download songs? that's far fetched... i also doubt a subscription since the music industry's allready griping about $1 per song
- TokenUser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ iTunes 6 is now live on theApple site ....
- redpoint73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Windows version of ITunes 4 (or maybe a 4.something) made a huge improvement in startup time when you opened the program. Version 5 seemed like a step backward in this regard. Hopefully this will be improved soon.
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1iTunes is not free enough for me--yes..it may be free to listen and manage my music, but TorrentSpy and SoulSeek keep me happy for "purchasing" music.
- cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can always tell when iTunes is about to update to a new version when they don't update their store on Tuesdays like normal--and guess what? No Tuesday update so far this week...
- ultimathule, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, it has a new "Video" section in the left pane. It's kind of neat (at least on Windows) to see your videos in a Tiger-like preview, reflections and all.
- ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Either this is shopped, or iTunes 5 will officially be the shortest lived update to the iTunes program. Does make you wonder about their announcement today though . . .
- feralgoat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Heh. I'm a she, not a he :P
It's not a fake. I'm not interested in going through all the trouble of making fake pictures when we'll know what the "big announcement" is soon enough. I just thought it was weird, so I posted a screenshot. - DrMerle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The webcast will be available at apple's website, they already have the link up, not sure if it will be live, or posted sometime after the event. It starts at 1 PM Eastern time, 11 AM Pacific...
- tplants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1FYI - DCFC sent an email to their list today announcing a newly released iTunes Original package. Prominent mention of a couple of videos (see below).
When I clicked the link the album didn't show up on itunes.
Makes me think this is real, actually. It would be pretty tedious to fake a track listing like that. (Aside: I'm psyched about this album. It looks great.)
I call real. Sort of shocked about itunes 6.0 coming so soon, but I call real.

DCFC Releases 'iTunes Originals' Session
Death Cab releases an 'iTunes Originals' session today. It will be available exclusively through iTunes and features never before heard live-in-the-studio versions of songs spanning their career including 'Underwater,' 'Amputations,' and 'Soul Meets Body.' It also includes a lengthy interview with Ben and Chris and video footage from the recording session. Click on over to iTunes to see all the details. - DrMerle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"Am I the only one who doesn't care about iTunes?"
Yeah, and you probably think Winamp is the *****... - digason, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can see them jumping to iTunes 6, but only if video plays a big role. If this happens, iTunes 6 would be around for a while. Long enough in fact that whatever version number it is will be included in the likely January release of iLife '06. This will put all iLife '06 apps at version 6 rather than iLife '05 which had one app, iTunes, not being version 6.
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Interesting comment on that page: The pic shows Death Cab for Cutie iTunes Original. There isn't any iTunes original for Death Cab for Cutie. Fake?
- ciphex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Am I the only one who doesn't care about iTunes?"
Probably.
iTunes is undeniably the single best personal music management software out there. And it's free. Sure it has the Music Store feature to make some $$.. but that doesn't get in anybodyz way. You can even turn it off completely. And it doesn't pop ads up in your face all the time. oh and it's free.
I've never seen any app on any platform index large amounts of music and their tags as fast as iTunes does. It will index, build a library, and categorize (on disk) my 44 Gig (legit) MP3 archive in under 5 minutes.
Oh.. and it's FREE!
(the legacy g-force visualizer is sweet too)
So yeah... you're the only one who doesn't care. - fu_fish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like trvr got his vindication for all the claims that his picture was fake.
- speg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He was right! Naysayers eat your socks!
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1^^^^^^
And ogg playback. When will iTunes do that? - kristin364, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry peeps. The site is advertising iTunes 6, but it links you to the iTunes 5 download
- Squinty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, the Apple Store is down with a "We'll be back soon" message. This usually means some kind of hardware update, so who knows. New Powerbooks, video iPod, G5 refresh. Something new is certainly coming, something new for the Mac zealots to spend their money on. =D
- l0k1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it may well be a fake, but i will say that the iTMS is behaving strangely for me at the moment. for example, if i select an album by, say, mujaji, there are no songs listed (and this is also the case for a few other artists i tried, but not true across the board). it could just be me, though.
- DaviDK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Interesting comment on that page: The pic shows Death Cab for Cutie iTunes Original. There isn't any iTunes original for Death Cab Cutie. Fake?"
Why would the "scam artist" photoshop a record which is not available on iTunes, if he's using a printscreen of itunes 5.x and simply retouching the version number (ammong other things)?
This is someone on the inside, accessing to stuff not yet available, because he's using iTunes 6.
I'm usually quite skeptic, hell I yelled photoshop when the first photos of the nano came out, but this sounds likely. - Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
Maybe with iTunes6, the Music Store will offer songs encoded in AAC+. I'm still really surprised Apple doesn't offer ALAC lossless content for a higher price, especially with iPod hard drive sizes going up...or supposedly going up.
1 Hour and 17 minutes to go before the presentation. I'm still betting the thingie's gonna be called the iPod Cinema. - IHaveIssues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"*Cough*, winamp IS the *****..."
I was to to agree also. - TokenUser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes - WinXP SP2 now running iTunes 6.0.0.18. It installed the latest Quicktime as part of the update package. Nio update to the iPod updater released yet though.
- flipzmode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm using it right now, and I don't see a single different from v5. Nothing different in the layout. I only use it as an mp3 player though.
- sahaskatta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Get Apple QuickTime v7.0.3 w/o bundled iTunes
http://digg.com/software/Apple_QuickTime_v7.0.3_Released_(10_12_05) - Seaton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As I sit at my computer and marvel at the wonder that is iTunes 6, I can't help but think...SoundJam has sure come a long way!
- your_mom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0taht guy is running on OSX. iTunes 6 may only be for OSX . i mean thats what they did with quicktime 7.0 and windows. they released it on OSX but only had the very shadowy quicktime 7.0 public preview.
- 2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.macrumors.com/?index.php
"iTunes 6 to be released..." - belgar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yo, New iPod. Wider. Bigger screen.

I win!
The video iPod is available in 30 and 60 GB capacities - and both are thinner than the current 20GB Pod. 30GB will be $299, 60GB will be $399. UK prices will be confirmed later. And did we mention it was available in black? Oh yes, and it comes with a case, so don't worry about scratches! - Crutch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There has to be some kind of plan for it, besides an easier way to find video files on itunes.
- theMaxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone has a change log?
All I see different from before is the video thingy. Version 6 is only v5 + some cute video section? That's all?
If they keep going like this, we'll be using iTunes 34 rather quickly LOL - phillprice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i stand corrected - reboot required
- iaskedTGT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0More Lemming Crap!
- 2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just need to post my opinion on the web so that it is forever saved: In 1/2 hour Apple will announce a video iPod.
If they do, I was right and Phil was wrong. If not... Rats! Foiled again! - neofactor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone else have trouble trying to watch a preview of LOST or any of the shows? Nothing appears for me at all...
and where is last nights episode... wonder what the turnaround is. 24 hours? - SbooX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Another vote for "where the ***** is ogg support?!?!?!"
- lotus22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually, Death Cab For Cutie is a very good band.
You hear his work all the time on MTV and commercials with the Postal Service. Which is the lead singer of Death Cab with more techno music. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0j_bellone, thats what J-hymn is for!
http://www.hymn-project.org -- remove DRM from your iTunes purchased music, with no loss of quality. Good stuff.
Disclaimer: Yes, I remove DRM from all my purchased music. This is just so I an use it on my portable device. Please don't go downloading songs of Napster and then spreading them via p2p.
(Also, just to be moral, I'm keeping my napster subscription, even though I don't have to too play my music. The main reason I remove the DRM from Napsters files, is so I can play it on my mp3 player, and in iTunes)
Another note, just because you purchase your music (i.e. from iTunes), you don't own it. You are licensed it, from Apple/iTunes. The copyright holders are the only ones that truly own it.
Josh - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lynxpro, actually, while the music I downloaded was WMA, Tunebite has automatically converted it to MP3 for me ;) I can also output it as OGG.
And yes, the WMA file isn't the highest quality to begin with.. but it sounds decent on most music. If it really distorts a song, I can just pay 99 cents and get it off iTunes, but I'd much rather get it free/for $9.99 a month. Especially oldies, Johnny Cash in 128KBPs WMA, wont sound any worse (to my ears anyway) than a 192KBPs MP3. Just because the source file wasn't that clean to begin with.
128KBPs WMA isn't all that bad really. I can't stand the music stores that sell 96KBps though. (if they still do. I hope they upgraded) (Although I do have some 96KBPs WMAs on my portable Nitrus, just because its HD is so small.)
Josh - drn666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"*Cough*, winamp IS the *****..."
lol ... it was like 10 years ago before anything else was around. - CountZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0iTunes 6 is indeed out. To check the story out I opened iTunes and instructed it to check for updates. I was not suprised when I was informed that there was indeed an update to iTunes bringing it to iTunes 6. I'm downloading it now.
- JeffS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All I can say is iTuned 5.5 on Linux works great. It is nice to have a native Linux version, although the Quicktime is a little choppy.
- zwilliams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ummm, OGG support is here: http://macupdate.com/info.php/id/14259 (iTunes not iPod)
- Swampthing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Think downloading shows won't catch on? Wait till some of the other partners show up... and later, when Steve starts looking at the soap opera market and realizes all the folks hooked on daytime soaps could watch them on the commute to and from work. Just autosync and you have the next day's episode for tomorrow.... Hmmm...
