- sully213, on 10/12/2007, -2/+82I guess they'll have to move onto OS XI finally and they'll have to start using some other animal.
How about Max OS XI Rainbow Trout???
...could happen - ThatsUnpossible, on 10/12/2007, -1/+69OS XI will be the first OS to go all the way "to eleven."
First release codename is "Nigel" - bsing, on 10/12/2007, -4/+70liger?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35But... What's going to be after Lion or Lynx?
- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35That would be too kiddy. They would have to fill it with a lot of eye candy, cool effects, and dumb it down in order to fit the name. Oh wait...
I'm not flaming. I really love macs. REALLY. - kapi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33I think "Garfield" should be used as well.
- clackerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31Predatory Cats? i would have used Battle Cat, Panthro, Cat Woman, The Lion King, Roy's Tiger, and Toonces
- neuropsychguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32@una
Liger = Lion father + tiger mother
Tigon = Tiger father + lion mother - desistere, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24I submit a new theory. Stay with me. The Shaye computers, the German tanks, and the releases of OS X were all named after large cats. Now, I know what you're saying... this guy is crazy... but if you think about it...
- lazyholmes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17rcan, a dingo is a dog
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21liger = lion + tiger? why not tigon? )
- abrooks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Yeah, except TUAW has been around for years.....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17and cougar.. hmm
- Loonacy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I'm waiting for Mac OS Ocelot. With free revolvers.
- tastyterrorist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Well they'll probably be going onwards to OS 11 so cat names will go out.
- gamerscalling, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15@ una
It's not that you scream Mac's suck I digg you down. It's the horrible way in which you wrote the post.
@ghost
It is also my understanding that the structure of Linux and Mac is much harder to get into with a virus, that is one reason why most Mac viruses are Office macros and other things. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13The next codename will be Thundercats. No more of this wimpy "big cat" stuff. They're going all out with the most ferocious beasts possible.
THUNDERCATS, HO!!!!!!!!!!! - haydesigner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13@Snoozer: "You can never joke on this site."
Oh, you can definitely joke here.
It is the being *funny* part that most people seem to find too difficult. - 0crabby0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Meerkat?
- gamerscalling, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Whoops wrong reply button.
- 0crabby0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9They'll just go to cartoon cats - Felix, Sylvester, Tom, Pink Panther...
- missflibbles, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10If your first introduction to the liger is Napoleon Dynamite, you fail. Incidentally, you also have to hand in your geek card.
- kingyubba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8how about SABRETOOTH?
--- yeah, baby! - antares3000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I always thought Ligers only existed in "Napoleon Dynamite". Here is a video of these freakin' huge cats: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6710211402317199827&q=liger
- pixelmixer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7OH.. MY...GOD...it all makes sense now.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -0/+7Hell yeah, I'd use the Apple Snarf™.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+72neuropsychguy:
wow thanx)
waiting for Jagger (jaguar + tiger), Cheenx and Puger :))) lol )))) - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6> The only reason macs dont have viruses is because people dont MAKE viruses for macs.
Partly, but also if you look at the how a Windows virus usually works, you'll see that there typically isn't a similar exploit available on OS X or there are safeguards in place to stop such a thing. Apple also ships Macs with all unnecessary services and ports turned off so there's no default hole in all OS X boxes the first time they boot up. You won't have any RPC exploits on Macs like we've seen on Windows.
There's nothing mysterious about this but it's not all because of market share numbers. When you ignore some of the flat-out dumb things MS has done, you let them off the hook and they should be accountable for this. It's not all market share. Do a Google search for IIS vs. Apache and see what I'm talking about. Much of it is simply MS's history of not paying close enough attention to security and not being proactive about it. - SuperMank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Ligers: bred for their skills in magic
- cwshea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Dugg for the reference to German tanks... (at the bottom of the article).
- b3mus3d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5OSX Kitty _does_ have a ring to it now that you mention it...
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nazi tanks, huh? So when does the Ratte roll out?
- Osmanthus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Have people forgotten that Jaguar and Cougar were code names for MS-DOS, Panther was a code name for Windows? This was well before Apple or Shaye used cats as codenames. It seems that programmers just like cats!
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -0/+3Knowing how normal people will pronounce 'Ratte', I have to play this card:
The Ratte is already out, we use it to move the cursor on the screen. :) - JonnyTrombone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@clackerd I thought Toonces was the "Driving Cat"?
- bbardlbradd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That cat's dead b/c it sucked.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_Selection
OSXI Tomahawk Cruise Missile Sandwich
(If you read the article about the similarities between Mac OS's and German tanks.) - deadcow231, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4How about the Pussy?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You've never seen Spinal Tap have you?
- Skwerl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ jonnytrombone
You obviously never saws the episode where he was the tooncinator.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=iZVkenqAck4 - dixonr315, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Still other cat names one could use. Lion-O, Jaga, maybe even Snarf ;-)
- LoganT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They should of totally named the iPhone OSX, Mac OSX Kitten.
- BobaFettTDG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Mrrrrrrow!
- wooptoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Slackware actually hopped from version 4 to 7 some time ago. (Ok, don't tell anyone :P)
> "OS XI will be the first OS to go all the way "to eleven." "
conclusion: none... - AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -2/+4Don't know about you but I'm still wating for the Apple House Cat™.
- LoganT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2LOL, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Lynxwithbunny.jpg
Don't look if you like bunnies. - BenStockwell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"OS XI will be the first OS to go all the way "to eleven." "
Erm, Slackware 11.0? - clackerd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2...that or "tabby," "siamese," and "korat" just didn't sound very menacing.
- spiderland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pretty slick taxidermy work.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -0/+1It'd fit though, use the same old style for everything, except for give it a new twist on things that you visually look at.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5If Microsoft used the cat code names they'd pick Garfield. Big, fat, lazy, occasionally pukes on your carpet. Sounds about right to me.
