- BlackSheepx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26When my old mp3 players screen broke, I opened it up and replaced the screen with a tiny hand drawn picture of a guy walking his dog and wrote HDTV in the top corner. I can now say I own a portable HDTV.
- GarethRogers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Fairly obvious for someone with tech knowledge, but informative all the same.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Do what everyone else does - sell it on eBay in "as is" condition.

- stou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I sold a 2nd generation ipod on ebay with a broken screen... a picture of the thing with a broken screen and the auction title "10Gig portable firewire drive".... in the description with big words was "this is an ipod with a BROKEN SCREEN".... Sold for ~200$, I don't know why.
- TomP, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Kill someone with it? http://news.com.com/2061-10801_3-6090335.html?part=rss&tag=6090335&subj=news
Turn it into a black ipod? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3tItJKdXYs - JakeMcMahon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Surely it's pointless to own lots of refurbished iPods, so do you make your money back by selling them on ebay?
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11>Does the phrase "read the article" mean anything to you?
He did. How else would he know the article was about what to use it for *if your battery dies*? - RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10There is a strong market for broken iPods on Ebay. It's always a good idea to sell off your old gadgets and then use the proceeds to buy the next great thing.
- brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"Just put duggmirror in place of digg on the URL."
I like clicking a link better. So due to my lazyness I spend an extra ten seconds searching the comments for a link to the mirror. - ozmasis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6what to do with a dead ipod
1. freeze in liquid nitrogen
2. drop 5 stories
now thats a good physics class - jprez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Ya know what i did with my dead ipod? sold that mofo on ebay... hey... i told them... and i got $65 for it! boo yea!
- lesliewong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Hooking it up to a 3.5" hard disk is probably what I'll do with my broken 3G iPod on which the disk failed. (http://www.command-tab.com/2005/03/13/ipod-super/)
- fr34k5h0w, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Ehm, last I checked you could get the high end iPod for $399.99, but I seem to recall a price of $500 on a LOW END PS3 that hasn't even reached market yet. I dunno, maybe I'm just suffering from altzeihmers. It could happen.
- paulson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I buy broken ones in order to fix them... either that or I repair them... it's fun and it's something to do.
Good article. - prthealien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5eBay is a great place to sell your dead iPod. If the harddrive still works, you can get a pretty penny for it.
- dshPls, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Weird, I cooked my iPod by leaving it on my dashboard all day today, the summer heat made the metal back so hot you couldn't pick it up; good article.
- jholdaway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I sold my 3rd gen ipod on Amazon for 70 bucks.. Apparently some people are willing to buy "broken ipod" of course he probably just put in a 30 dollar battery and got a cheep ipod out of it.
- kigabit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If the damage isn't too serious, you can sometimes fix "dead" iPods by taking them apart. I managed to fix my sister's iPod, which I believe was showing the "sad iPod," this way. All you have to do is pop the top off, disconnect the hold/volume ribbon cable, disconnect the hard drive, then disconnect the battery (in that order). Then put it back together, hard drive FIRST, then battery, then ribbon cable, and then the top. After that, it may or may not be necessary to format the iPod's hard drive, and reinstall iTunes. In her case, it wasn't necessary, and it's working fine now :D
- mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Okay everyone here is some news you don't need to ask for a mirror if it's under the tech section(Currently but it should expand soon). Just put duggmirror in place of digg on the URL.
- JetwingX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I am amazed no one has brought up the fact that you could RECYCLE the iPod through apple and get 10% off a new one.
"A free iPod recycling program, conducted through Appleās retail stores, offers environmentally friendly disposal and a 10% discount on the purchase of a new iPod."
http://www.apple.com/environment/recycling/ - 500freestyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I guess its a good thing to know, but all the article really says is that an ipod with a dead battery works plugged in.
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That was one of the most idiotic things I've seen someone do on tape. Do they realize that the battery could have easily exploded? We're talking red hot chunks of metal all over your face and body... not to mention what would have happened to his hand (which was quite close the the ipod at some points)
Still, very cool vid, thanks for risking bodily harm. - fr34k5h0w, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wow, did you walk under any ladders recently or break any mirrors in the past oh say seven years? Cuz it looks like you're having some ***** luck with 'em. 6 months and still tickin on the 5G pod here.
- lesliewong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sorry this is the URL: http://www.command-tab.com/2005/03/13/ipod-super/
Remove right parenthesis at the end of the URL in the above comment - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4like elves . . .
- degree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4ipods dont die, they just fade away....
- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2saughter the memory of a dead nano on top of a live nano, heard it might not work, i dont think they got n example of one that does
- contradictator, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7@foolfromhell
I wonder, are you getting modded down because your comment is dumb and pointless, or because of your ridiculous claim that "Professor Xavier" is better than BILL SHATNER?! Blasphemy... =P - ummagummas08, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3 "I haven't bothered to try replacing the battery in my iPod mini, partly because I have two other, larger-capacity iPods"
Man, I wish I had 3 iPods, then I could have 120GB's of music!
Rich *****. - SNIa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You have one person with bad luck, and then you have several with good luck. I've dropped my 3G ipod on the pavement maybe a half dozen times, has rough corners, and still plays flawless. All I have to say is AppleCare. get the extended warranty from apple for the 3 years. I've also seen someone who bought two zens and had them BOTH fail. Funny thing about creative their warranty is sub par to apple, no extended warranty or *creative care*. Do yourself a favor and find a phone number on creatives website... See how fast you can find one on Apples... I've seen as many Creative and other players die as per a ratio of iPods... "Typical Electronics" They fail, get over it. Where you get the support? Apple is of the best, shop around.
- fillmore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm loathe to give up the 3rd-gen iPod that I won a few years ago, but the damn 3G'ers had an awful tendency to drain the battery, even when totally switched off. I put in a higher capacity battery one year ago, and now that battery can't hold a charge either. It is good for a firewire drive & nothing else (sad to say).
Judging from the number of eBay resellers here, we really need a "Things to do before you sell your iPod"... like overwriting every block of data on the drive, so that the buyer can't recover any data from the drive. (Y'know... contacts, porn, serial numbers, porn, passwords, porn....) - kodek, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5This only assumes that the only way for an iPod to die is when its battery dies. Not my case :(
- AlexLand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What gets me about iPods is everyone's okay with how awful they are. Like, people are okay with them breaking after 6 months. I'm not so big on my 300$ mp3 player's hard drive self destructing, but maybe that's just me.
- joe18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11600 diggs already. 1600 dead ipods?
- bSimms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder if that 10% can be in addition to a student discount. That gets a new 30 gig iPod down to about 240 bucks if you trade one in.
- tkdan235, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1some pictures of that black iPod mod...
http://blackipod.pbwiki.com - kohan69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thank you Captain Obvious. I never knew I could use an iPod with a dead battery.
"What to do with an old iPod" should include at least 8 solder points. - 500freestyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't forget porn.
- KillerJ59J, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I turned mine into an iPod Dude named Ryan. The story is *****, but I have a picture of em' next to it.
http://www.selbyk.com/articles/deadipod.php - brainspout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"What to do with a Dead iPod"?
Return it to BustBuy, along with your 50 dollar extended warranty, for whatever the latest greatest iPod is. - MalTheObscure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is it just me, or is this article only saying "Hey, if your battery dies, plug it in"?
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8its not "read the article" Its RTFA. Get it right
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1you can use your ipod if it breaks, but if it really breaks your out of luck. come on man . . .
- etx313, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4What to do with a dead Ipod: Learn from your mistakes.
- brettmosleymaui, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If that fails check out www.buymybrokenipod.com, they pay really well, have web based price quotes and are honest. They will buy any broken, damaged or used ipod in any condition (really I have gotten good prices for sad face ipods, cracked LCD, even water damaged Apple ipods). Also the site is really easy to use.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0is replacing the battery that big of a hassle? cuz im pretty happy with my mini, it actually has more battery life than the nano at 18 hours and its 6 gigs two more than the nano can offer so im looking into replacing the battery when it dies out.
- alexr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've had my iPod for about two years and it just died. These things break down like clockwork. Time to take mine back to b-buy for the warranty replacement...
- FryerTuck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Denny Crane!
- Reno582, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Buy a new one i guess, thats what 'Masta Jobs' wishes, then I'd throw the old one in my PC graveyard
