- kenvsryu, on 08/14/2008, -10/+68iPhone 3g, twice the hype, half the promise.
- xtarburst, on 08/14/2008, -7/+33my coworker has the 3G iphone and I have the N95-3, the reception on my phone is at full while her's is at 70 or 60% only.
- rpark, on 08/14/2008, -2/+22Priceless or $15? I am so confused.
- MarianaPeyton, on 08/13/2008, -16/+34This is not a problem of Apple. It is AT&T's fault. My iphone 3G works at about 1Mbps here in Brazil.
- ferrell, on 08/14/2008, -4/+21Average speed on EDGE: 180kbps
Average speed on 3G: 230kbps
Paying $15 more per month for 50kbps: PRICELESS! - CCB0x45, on 08/14/2008, -3/+16you are a total dick.
- alliekins619, on 08/14/2008, -0/+10Welcome to telcos in general. Do you know why there is only one cable company in your town? Because that company pays the government to authorize their monopoly on the ridiculous premise that there isn't a market for a second company. At least with wireless carriers you have a little choice.
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -2/+11I can see all the fanboys begin to close their eyes, plug their ears, and start humming.
- streak, on 08/13/2008, -12/+21For some reason, it's getting lost in the noise that AT&T delivers EDGE predominately at 850 MHz frequency, which penetrates buildings significantly better than the 1900 MHz frequency at which AT&T delivers most of its 3G service.
- xero9, on 08/14/2008, -1/+9Riiiight, our 6GB plan blows, then what about your 5GB "unlimited" plan?
Oh hey, how's your $20 unlimited texting plan working out for you? I pay $8 and get more then just unlimited texting. - smashingmonkey, on 08/14/2008, -4/+12The biggest problem for calls is that the iPhone 3G seems to prefer a weak 3G signal to a strong Edge signal. I believe this could be fixed with a firmware update, but for the meantime, I have 3G off unless I'm specifically doing data-related things with no wifi available (most of the time).
Does it sting that I'm paying $30 per month for that? Yes. But overall, I love this phone.
BTW, supposedly AT&T is still rolling out 3G in my area, so it might be a network issue too. - peestandingup, on 08/14/2008, -7/+15Why are you guys digging him down? This is pretty much confirmed. Most 3G in other nations with the new iPhone aren't having any of these issues.
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -1/+810 Years Ago?
Cell Phone technology hasn't changed at all? - HolyChimp, on 08/14/2008, -2/+8The 3G on my iPhone is pretty much perfect here in the UK, much better than the piss poor EDGE network that O2 rolled out for the first iPhone.
- MrTito, on 08/14/2008, -1/+7So off topic that I feel compelled to digg you up.
- deadbaby, on 08/14/2008, -6/+11The life cycle of these stories is hilarious....
iPhone 1.0 Launch: OMG!! NO 3G!! OMG!!! Apple is so stupid for not doing 3G.
Post-iPhone 3G launch: OMG! 3G sucks! I don't get any coverage... my battery doesn't last as long.
Everyone seems to have ignored all the people saying 3G isn't all its cracked up to be. I've used Verizon's EVDO, Sprint's AirCards and 3G on BlackBerries and I've never been satisfied with them. It gets the job done but it has never lived up to the hype for me on any network. EDGE is slow but pretty reliable and easy on your battery. Ultimately it's your own choice. I don't actually get 3G around here besides one town so I just leave the auto-select feature on. I'm fine with EDGE -- most of the time I'm using wifi anyway. Anyone who rushed out and upgraded their V1 iPhone to a 3G, based solely on getting 3G, was just ignorant of the reality of the situation. I upgraded for more capacity myself. 3G was meh, GPS was meh. The good thing is for new iPhone purchasers the phone is cheaper. AT&T should, or maybe they already do, allow you to subscribe to EDGE only data service instead of 3G. I think a lot of people would happily give up 3G to save $10 a month. - kylesherman, on 08/14/2008, -2/+7Wait I'm confused...you do know the story you are commenting on is about the Apple iPhone?
- slammerama, on 08/14/2008, -2/+7so are you saying steve jobs and att conspired to blow up the trade center...I KNEW IT!
- VicRomano, on 08/14/2008, -0/+5I'll agree. I called asking when we would get 3G in the area. They said they couldn't say because their competitors would put in 3G. God forbid someone else comes in before you making you have to put in 3G as well...
- larryjr88, on 08/14/2008, -9/+14AT&T is the worst company on earth. The phone, TV, internet, and cellular service are all total garbage.
They refuse to put money towards better technology (even those asshats at Comcast are upgrading speeds and adding data centers). This ***** of a company has been crapping on the heads of customers since their monopoly started in the 70s. They won't change because you will still pay. They don't thrive off good service, but the lack of choice. Many places only offer AT&T DSL, no cable. Want an iPhone? Have to use them. What home phone? Have to use them. Have an issue? They don't give a *****.
Their entire business plan is to trap people and force them to use them for lack of choice. - peestandingup, on 08/14/2008, -1/+6Too bad you're a friggin' ignorant moron. GTF off Digg.
- AncientToaster, on 08/14/2008, -3/+8I wish I had the version of Sprint you did...
- mathewb, on 08/14/2008, -0/+5Same issues in Aus - with all providers not just 1

FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Coverage in rual area of New Hampshire and Vermont! - pwnerofnoobs, on 08/14/2008, -0/+4Nice cut and past job. I hope you failed your essay.
- intyper72, on 08/14/2008, -0/+4mostly because saying sprint and apple in the same sentence sends fan boys into a panic.
- ErickStevenson, on 08/14/2008, -3/+7It's a feature!
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -6/+10N95 > iphone
- 11oops, on 08/14/2008, -2/+6I've yet to get 3G once, despite the fact that my entire city and surrounding areas are supposedly in their coverage area (at least according to AT&Ts maps -- should have known better than to trust them).
The GPS actually pinpoints my location 1 in every 5 times I use it. Quite disappointing, really. - protocolor, on 08/14/2008, -1/+5really? how about all of these users (all over the world)?
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=13978 ... - HolyChimp, on 08/14/2008, -0/+4The battery bar is different though. It differs from phone to phone, but I remember with my old nokia, full meant you had lots of battery, 75% was about half battery, 50% was a few hours and 25% was 'charge you phone, it'll be dead within a few minutes'. It's there to give you an idea of how long your phone will last, not the precise amount of charge remaining.
- BossX, on 08/13/2008, -9/+133G works really well in Toronto
- JasonCox, on 08/13/2008, -13/+16The only issue I've had with my iPhone are that I need to reboot it once a day to get GPS and sound working. Aside from that, all my other problems can be traced back to AT&T not having the great coverage that Sprint did.
- waydee, on 08/14/2008, -1/+4but but but it's REVOLUTIONARY!
- Gioleb, on 08/14/2008, -3/+6If you call AT&T and tell them that their maps say you are in a 3G covered area but you can't get 3G reception they will refund you your 30 $. Every month.
- farfromsubtl, on 08/14/2008, -4/+7Why is this guy being Dugg down?
- yabos, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3Here on Rogers I'm getting a paltry ~120Kbps. Rather pathetic but yes still better than EDGE.
- gohepcat, on 08/14/2008, -1/+4While people love a good story, and it's hard to really tell what's going on in this situation. I can only say that from my own experience my crappy little Sprint Motorola Q...a 3 year old phone... has impeccable speed and coverage using EVDO. It's VERY rare that I don't see my "EV" symbol on my home page. The phone itself is rock stable too. Every person with a 3G iPhone I run into seems to mention stability and 3G issues. (I fully expect the stability issues to be ironed out..that's really a non issue)
I love the IPhone and want one badly. I don't blame Apple for possibly releasing an under-performing product. They are simply like every other software/hardware maker in the world.
It's the odd attitude of the Mac crowd seems to think it's impossible for them to do wrong that gets me. - philcloh2o, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3$30 month for 6GB of data.... on Rogers or Fido....
- abbathdoom, on 08/14/2008, -1/+4TBH, wasnt the reason the first iPhone had Edge rather than 3G nothing to do with battery life and everything to do with the fact America had pretty much zero 3G network at the time.
Even now their 3G network sounds really crappy. I get the impression they are years behind the rest of the world when it comes to mobiles. - inactive, on 08/14/2008, -1/+4Except the meter bars are not standard so comparing them is pointless.
- spookyttws, on 08/14/2008, -4/+6Be careful! It's going to fall in!
That said, I have the First Gen Iphone and my sister has the 3G. I was so excited to upgrade my phone, but after a week of playing with my sister's I decided not to. Besides the weak 3G signal I really disliked the plastic backing (compared to my metal back) and after upgrading to firmware 2.0 I felt no real need to buy a new one. My 'cell phone gps' does just about the same job as the 3G, I just have to tell it to find me again whenever I turn a corner. - deanhatescoffee, on 08/14/2008, -0/+2"They refuse to put money towards better technology"
AT&T switched to GSM because they are dedicated to better technology, and they're already developing 4G. They were one of the first major cell providers, and are still the largest for a reason. They have a lot of competitors, many of which are much cheaper than AT&T, but people stick with AT&T for a reason. If you don't like 'em then go with another carrier, but you'll complain about that service too, just in different ways. - inactive, on 08/28/2008, -8/+10what's wrong with the 3G? try having to pay $30 a month even if you never want to use it…
- udahlen, on 08/14/2008, -0/+23G in the iPhone 3G isn't working as it should (I'm in Europe). It has connection and speed problems constantly. I have switched it off. This is not the network's fault (other 3G phones work fine). It is a problem with the iPhone.
- ngmcs8203, on 08/14/2008, -1/+3If you're curious that's an animated gif of 3 old dudes jerking eachother off in the shower. Then when you try to close the window a popup says "Hello!". So no matter how curious you are, don't do it unless you want to see that.
- deadbaby, on 08/14/2008, -2/+4I work at a tower site in a small town and AT&T is actively working on their 3G upgrade. I assume they're doing this in many other locations as well since a random small town wouldn't be getting much special treatment from AT&T.
The thing most people don't seem to realize is mobile data was primarily designed for text. These networks need to be built up to meet the demands of mobile video/audio, real web browsing, etc. If you want to be on the cutting edge of this stuff you have to accept that the business side of things is going to lag behind you. AT&T has no incentive to upgrade their networks until they have a product (in this case, the iPhone) that would actually take advantage of higher bandwidth. - Braxo, on 08/14/2008, -1/+3On AT&T it is $30 for 5GB of data in the US.
- freesf, on 08/14/2008, -0/+2or call AT&T and request a $30 dollar credit to you account, that's what I do and it works.
