- Khast, on 05/20/2009, -3/+117Yeah, great...way to go Wired. Now Apple will be on the look out for Easter Eggs. Ruin it for everyone.....
- foltaggio, on 05/20/2009, -0/+74This reminds me of the FML app... the sex category was missing until a couple days after you install, and there was a prompt that allowed you to enable "additional categories", as the app puts it.
- frieddonuts, on 05/20/2009, -1/+46So basically they're saying that they way to get obscene content into the app store is to hide it? How is this a huge revelation? Obvious article is...
- drmsux, on 05/20/2009, -3/+25Yeah, then have easter egg leaked on Digg and your dev license revoked.
- inactive, on 05/20/2009, -2/+22You're gay
- MavRevMatt, on 05/20/2009, -2/+19Yeah, because no one at Apple reads the internets and won't ever see this article... /s

- tonydapony10, on 05/20/2009, -2/+12dude, 38 Facebook notifications...
- Hellman109, on 05/20/2009, -1/+11Rumor is that with 3.0 and parental controls they will allow more adult content because if wanted you can block it
- GeorgeStone2, on 05/20/2009, -0/+10You must be a hoot at parties.
- ATL, on 06/20/2009, -2/+10That's just what I was thinking. This developer who just went public with it is just going to make things worse.
- enginbeeringSB, on 05/20/2009, -1/+9What would REALLY suck would be if they used this as an excuse to force developers to hand over the source code before being approved (which they don't currently do).
- cawpin, on 05/20/2009, -1/+9Agreed. Buried and reported.
- yabos, on 05/20/2009, -1/+8And so what. You get your app on there, someone finds your hidden content, Apple finds out and bans your developer account. That's a good way to blow $99 and your chances of ever getting a developer account again.
- dOOBiEx213, on 05/20/2009, -4/+10Lame application, and I disrespect the developers for successfully swaying my opinion by using a girl with big *****.
- factsahoy, on 05/20/2009, -5/+11"For example, an audio app with a malicious Easter egg, Zdziarski explained, could potentially allow a developer to record a user’s conversations without him or her knowing about it."
Oh really? How, exactly, will that be accomplished when the iPhone doesn't run apps in the background? - inactive, on 05/20/2009, -0/+6Because we already have people texting while driving. We don't need mass amounts of people fapping & causing accidents/jerking-off in public restrooms. Etc...
- Filter, on 05/20/2009, -0/+6The developer that did that would surely be prevented from submitting any further apps. Not a good idea IMO.
- dragossh, on 05/20/2009, -0/+6And how exactly is the app supposed to install or run Firefox? iPhone OS sandboxes every app, it can't access anything besides its own folder, let alone launch other apps except Apple ones.
- MuffinPatrol, on 05/20/2009, -4/+9.............
- JackSchittt, on 05/20/2009, -0/+3Don't they also have a policy that the developer has to cover 100% of the refunds? If I sell an app for 10 bucks, Apple gets their 30% ($3) and I get 70% ($7). But if a refund is issued, I'm the one who has to cover the whole $10.
Which means that in cases like this, not only am I out my $99 and have my developer account banned, I'm out 30% for every refund issued after they remotely kill the app. - MrTea, on 05/20/2009, -1/+4you're horrible
- Dmilla16, on 05/20/2009, -0/+3they're all too busy using garage band and i-chatting to be using the interwebs
- 7aji, on 05/20/2009, -0/+3@Angostura: Odd behavior??? Really? There are tons of different ways to write program algorithms. Unless you are making a very simple programs which in the iPhone's case is not always. It's like what Google have been trying to do for years with internet search. They miss sometimes, and if that's the case with Apple, then they will be looking at a lot of people's work which is not right.
@BOFH139: They try the game, not look at the code. Just remember GTA SA. - KibibyteBrain, on 05/20/2009, -1/+3The worst part is they have an excuse to remove apps with them carte blanche too. Microsoft used to be the king of easter eggs until customers complained they made it all but impossible for their admins and such to do a full security/other audit on their systems, leading them to ban the practice. I could imagine Apple using similar BS to outright ban the practice.
- Narcism, on 05/20/2009, -5/+7I want to stick it in her pooper.
- WarriorBlake, on 05/20/2009, -3/+5SHOPPED! I can see the pixels.
- r2builder, on 05/20/2009, -1/+3Her teeth are really gappy.
- mmockett, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2On that screenshot, how did they get a little magnifying glass on one of the tabs at the bottom? Is that an app?
- nerdromancer, on 05/20/2009, -1/+3she had teeth? Were they on her boobs?
- techdever, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1with an exploit? yellosn0w works in the background for example...
- 7aji, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1I know, they don't even give you a gun in that game!!
- jemka, on 05/20/2009, -1/+2There was a girl in that video?
- techdever, on 05/20/2009, -1/+2?
- haydenk, on 06/05/2009, -0/+1"But he also secretly planted an Easter egg (programmer parlance for a secret feature) into the app for users to unlock the dirty words if they so pleased."
Add a Profanity Filter option that comes turned on by default but the user can turn off? Why make it a "secret", just make it a toggle switch that comes turned on? - dpantages, on 05/20/2009, -1/+2Yeah, I guarantee the Lyrics app isn't in the store anymore....
- asnider, on 06/05/2009, -0/+1And she's got sharp knees, too, amiright?
- pauldy, on 05/20/2009, -1/+2Without inside knowledge I can see what apple does, check to make sure the interface works and is fluid, profile the app for use of undocumented api's attempting to write to areas it is not supposed to. Quickly check through the resources of the app for objectionable material. If undefined material is found pass it on up the chain for further scrutiny.
The likely hood of most easter eggs making it past here is slim but should it and you get your app onto the store and it shows up on digg, your dev license gets revoked your app pulled and your now relegated to jailbreak options and your not allowed to play in the walled garden any more. - Krechet, on 05/20/2009, -2/+3I was thinking the same thing but along the lines of adding Firefox to it. For example you create a fart app. Apple approves it. You install it and have it download Firefox. This can be done even without an easter egg when the new firmware comes out. Just have the person "buy" FF from within the app.
- uberduger, on 05/20/2009, -1/+2Our old work computers went down one day, with no internet or anything, so I tried to access the hidden flight simulator type thing in Excel.
Only to find that I had the version after they took it out. Grrrr... - DijitalJB, on 05/20/2009, -1/+1You're absolutely correct there factsahoy
- BOFH139, on 05/20/2009, -1/+1Game Dev's have to give the rating agents FULL access, which normally includes guides and cheatcode or a Debug-mode so they can check EVERY part of the game.
- dOOBiEx213, on 05/20/2009, -2/+2
- IamNomad, on 05/20/2009, -4/+3Why not build an auto updater that update that app a few days after the fact ?
- brianegge, on 05/20/2009, -3/+1Oh, and this Easter egg idea worked real well for GTA. Apple can remotely kill any app at any time, and they likely built that feature just for apps which might have hidden features.
- Angostura, on 05/20/2009, -6/+1If I were Apple I would be working on an automated tool that would look through the source code for any 'odd' behaviour or patterns to alert a human screener. It's primary use would be to screen for trojans and look for (say) calls to networking functionality in apps that aren't meant to use the network.
I actually think this is a good idea, but luckily for you, I'm not Apple. - Narcism, on 05/20/2009, -9/+3Thank god, where else could I learn how to shake a child?
