- nateabel, on 10/11/2007, -12/+252DO NOT USE THAT SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER! That is MY SS#!!
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/11/2007, -1/+73AT&T isn't subsidizing the phone cost so why the hell do they care if people do the prepaid thing?
- superpixel, on 10/11/2007, -4/+46Awesome. How long before they close this loop?
- Dsn989, on 10/11/2007, -3/+41So the iPhone is completely useless without activation?
- PathDaemon, on 10/11/2007, -4/+35Woz would totally pay you to trade.
- LeeSoong, on 10/11/2007, -4/+34See if you can use a DISPOSABLE VISA Gift Card for the Pay as you go -
Pay 1 month of AT&T minutes - then let it go dead.
See if your iPhone iPod and WiFi features keep working.
Please let DIGG know... - PathDaemon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+30I'd much prefer if the question were, "How long before they make this available to everyone?"
Not that that's realistic, but it'd be pretty sweet for mere middle-class mortals to be able to choose from a decent selection of plans. - morriscat, on 10/11/2007, -6/+34Thats how I got mine working. Try it dumbass.
Posted Fromm my iPhone =) - cyclopsface, on 10/11/2007, -1/+28dude, you have bad credit.
- killerofkiller, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22yes
- AngelDragon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20It does work, that's how I have mine activated. By the way, every time I make a phone call and after it signs to the network to check for emails, it gives me an annoying message about the cost of the last transaction and my balance. Tho useful, its very annoying when it checks my mail every 15 mins and I'm not on wifi. Anyone knows how to turn that feature off?
- cybermort, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17because if you have good credit.. they're going to attempt to suck out every penny they can from you and locking you for two years is a start, is the American way.
- Rikushix, on 10/11/2007, -11/+28This is pretty misleading...nowhere does it say that you can actually get a iPhone plan this way, he hasn't gotten it activated yet and is unlikely to do so.
- mastercheif, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17So you are not locked into a 2 year contract?
- bluesdealer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14He does now...
- migitalwarfare, on 10/11/2007, -9/+23does the iPhone come with that smug sense of superiority, or do you pay extra for it? i know it damn sure isn't a 3rd party add-on.
- complexigon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Mine is 133-33-3337.
We can be dugg down together! - bluesdealer, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15It's not a loop; AT&T just don't want the prepaid option to become too publicized. They knew that people would find out on their own, but didn't go around advertising it for a reason.
- morriscat, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11You can call 911, thats it.
- morriscat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8In settings > email theres an on-off slider for each individual email account.
- monkeyrun, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8They are just running a credit check.
In most cases if a SSN does not have a credit score it's just because that person doesn't have any credit history.
I think they'll need to run a background check in order to confirm if a SSN is invalid. - nicpedersen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8and you can go to hell...legally.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8No. They want your SSN to sign you up for a contract plan. This is how all cell phones work.
- TinFoil209, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8ZING!
- dweeb79, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Well 200 minutes for $50 a month seems way too pricey. If it was $50 with 1000 night and weekends I would totally agree with you. But 200 minutes is just not worth it.
- Derrekito, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7and u have the iphone... you could pretend ur talking to people.
- stotty, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7It's Apple, it comes as standard.
- sarge96, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10Oops. Wrong Button.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Dialing 911 w/ the latest trendy, $600 devices is all the rage. You do not deserve emergency help if you don't dial with the sexy iPhone.
- RlAA, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6*iPhone commercial music* This is you posting a comment -- on your iPhone.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5If you do the pick-your-plan one, you pay monthly like you're on a regular contract plan, and your minutes roll over from month to month. If you run out of minutes, you can buy more.
The nice part is you can cancel if something comes up and you can't afford it, or if you simply don't want the plan anymore. I'm on it now because I didn't want to get on a contract plan before I got an iPhone.
Right now I have something like 1,000 minutes saved up from rollovers, but I'll be going out of town next month and will probably use a lot of that. Comes in handy that way. - JangoFett, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7"Posted Fromm my iPhone =)"
I guess that touch keyboard is a little tricky. - Chaulis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4How is this corruption? How the cell phone industry works for those who haven't been in it or haven't tried to learn its inner workings is phone maker makes expensive phone with tiny radio in it which costs lots to engineer and make. Cell phone providers (AT&T, Sprint PCS, T-Mobile, AllTell, Rodgers, Verizon Wireless) decide weather or not they want to carry that phone in their line up for the quarter. If so, the corporate stores take them in after a testing process. They offer low prices on the phone and have you sign a contract of a term that will allow them to attain profitability after a X amount of months, every carrier is different in that amount. Dealers like things like text messaging, mobile web, and other add ons because it decreases the time of which you have cost them money to get you activated and with a phone. So by going a prepaid option there is no guarantee that they will make their money back. In the case of the iPhone, since it unsubsidized, it doesn't matter, but they make money from day one, which AT&T really likes. So they don't advertise that option, but instead go for contracts where they can make their money.
- loltron, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4apparently you've never signed a cell phone contract...
- ydt89, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6i wish youd shut up.
- SillyMamma, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Direct link to the price plan screen shot
http://www.tuaw.com/photos/iphone-prepaid-gallery/296285/ - LeeSoong, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Social Security Numbers are Not required for Anything but the Social Security Office and your Taxes.
When people ask for them, they don't need them.
Ask them how they secure their information
Ask them how long they keep the information
Ask for a printout of their I.T. security Plan.
Ask them for THEIR social security number,
Oh - and NEVER LET ANYONE PHOTOCOPY YOUR DRIVERS LICENSE, EVER.
Stupid people want to copy your data, seems innocent - until they lose it - then you lose your identity - and your money. Stop Stupid people in their tracks with:
NO.
ABSOLUTELY NOT.
YOU ARE NOT AUTHORIZED TO COPY ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION.
If they are selling you something with cash - they don't need it, don't need your phone number, don't need your zip code, etc. If they get in your face about it, talk to the manager, tell them it is rude and insulting, and request the managers - regional director.
Report the manager for failing to train his employees in information security.
- jasonwea, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I've got the same combination on my luggage!
- killerofkiller, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5i think it's monthly else 40 dollars would give you unlimited data.. forever
- creativlogic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I am a PrePaid iPhoner... I just hate the fact that it sends me a message after everything that I do. especially since everything if free... does anyone know how to disable this?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You guys are making things too complicated
http://www.socialsecurity.gov/employer/ssnvhighgroup.htm - ABombbmoBA, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6So... because I had a severe medical episode over the past couple of years and racked up tons of medical bills, I shouldn't be able to buy an iPhone? Please.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yes, that option has been available for all carriers for a couple of years now. The device you use has no effect upon that option.
- 12340987, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I don't believe that there are 999- SSNs, I think the first three digits are by state of birth, and that 999-99-999 wouldn't be a valid number.
- chriskzoo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4The differences are as follows:
Non-Contract vs contract
$49 a month for 200 minutes, no nights and weekends, versus N/A
$59 for 300 minutes and 1000 nights and weekends, vs 450 minutes and 5000 nights and weekends
For as much as Iuse mine, the $49 a month would serve me fine. - blacklilyninja, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3exactly or there needs to be an ichat audio client
- smartmlp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I notice that this is just the Prepaid go phone + the 19.99 unlimited data smart phone option.
Example: The basic prepaid phone option is $29.99: http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service//cell-phone-plans/pyp-cell-phone-plans.jsp
, plus $19.99 for "unlimited data" smart phone connect: http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service//cell-phone-plans/smartphone-connect-plans.jsp
= $49.98 - wcbzero, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Now you just need a Skype web client... Never use cell minutes again, just the unlimited data!
- rfunches, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"Of course, this plan fails when Joe Schmoe comes in wanting a plan and his SSN actually happens to be 999-99-9999"
Joe Schmoe is providing an invalid SSN, then.
