- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -4/+49Yeah, that's why I'm waiting... (that, and I'm broke)
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -13/+47Most Apple buyers are either rich or broke. That's the nature of the beast.
- xboxing, on 10/12/2007, -5/+39This has been discussed to death. But the fact that Apple forces their software to run on their machines is the sole reason that the stuff runs so well and the OS is so solid. It's designed specifically. That's not fanyboyism, that's just the way it is.
- xboxing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Yup. I've been using Apple machines since the early 90s and their pricing structure has always remained the same for their lineups (mainly a 3 tier structure). It's not Apple's style to have a big starburst on their store page reading "$200 PRICE DROP!!!!". They'll just put the faster chips in their lineup when they're released and the prices will remain the same.
- cptshamrock, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27How does this affect the price that Apple is selling the computer at?
- Iriel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20This is not an Apple smash, but seriously, does anybody seriously think that Apple will lower prices because of lower Core Duo prices?
No. Either something new and amazing will be added to compensate the value or they'll put the new chips in at the next 'one more thing...' - renegade334, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21I agree, I doubt Apple will change their prices over this, Apple rarely changes their prices for their products.... I wish they would.
Anyone have seeds for a money tree? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -25/+41I'm marking down this article for one reason--the submitter's use of the word "Macinteltosh." What a ridiculously stupid and ugly looking word. I have to read it twice to figure out what they're saying, every time I see it. Just say Macintel or Intel Mac.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Next digg submission: "Wait for 6-12 months before buying any technology -- as the technology will improve modestly between now and then."
Wait, you mean prices go down and performance goes up over time? Holy crap! - dexim, on 10/12/2007, -14/+24Why do the dumb ones always have Dells?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Apple will probably keep their prices the same, but will bump up the specs of the same model.
- _skin_, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Why would you wait. Apple has never really lowered prices due to price falls in chipsets. But if you do wait,,, You might just as well wait forever!
- capran, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/64-bit
64-bit processors will mainly allow for more than 4GB of memory. Other than that there's little benefit to the average user at the present time. Only processor-intensive applications that are rewritten/compiled for 64-bit will see any improvement anyway. There's really no perfomance improvement (at the present time) for most things. - capran, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11What's stopping you from putting that Satellite on eBay and then buying an MBP?
- MisterKen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"Why would you wait. Apple has never really lowered prices due to price falls in chipsets. But if you do wait,,, You might just as well wait forever!"
That is so very true.
And I also think that is going to hurt Apple in the long run. By switching to Intel it does give off the implied impression that the machines should be cheaper since they are using a chip that is more widely used.
I'm not sure how much longer the 'everything works when you plug it in' selling point is going to hold out. - spadgos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@bonchbonch:
"Intellitosh", perhaps? - inactive, on 11/04/2008, -4/+8I don't see Apple changing the hardware so easily just because there's faster, cheaper chips available. I don't think that's how they work, but I could always be wrong.
That also means I doubt they will drop the price either. - monkeybutler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Apple isn't a company that is known to "pass the savings to the customers" so this really won't affect us. They have their pricepoints set so if anything it just maximizes their profit margins.
And for the MacBook then it probably won't bump the speed because they want to establish the macbook as the "consumer level" system so they aren't going to allow it to be too close to the MacBook Pro in terms of processing power. - eclypser, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Too Late. But thanks to the upgradeable nature of the processor in the new Mac Mini. Not the end of the world.
- inactive, on 11/04/2008, -2/+5You mean the TPM chip? As far as I know, my MacBook Pro runs all its applications fine and I am able to watch, listen and play whatever I like.
So why is everyone so damn scared to the point of boycotts and online petitions? Yes, there's a legitimate need for the awareness of the POTENTIALLY negative affects of TPM chips in Apple and other computers, but why is everyone running scared from 3 letters? - aresef, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Ya know what really sucks? A while before the Intel Macs were announced, I picked up a brand new Toshiba Satellite. If I made the decision for a new laptop today and not then, especially now with Boot Camp, I'd have gone for a Mac. And if these prices do actually drop, I'll only be kicking myself further.
- stephenson3745, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I think his point is you can always wait 2 more months and get a faster processor. It's called hyperbole and is used to better make the point. :)
- Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Not really, two Core Duos put off only 70W (If they are the 2.0GHz variety, less if they are 1.8s or 1.67s). Thats less than any Prescott P4, or a single G5.
Now in my case, when I get cold, I just fire up UD on my Pentium D. That baby can cook! - DrRo183, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6So, wait until even later when better stuff comes out. IMHO, doesn't matter if what you buy is the latest and fastest at the moment you get it. With time, it will lose its place.
Lol, reminds me of the techie that is always waiting for the next big thing before he/she buys. - cooppw02, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7I'm waiting for 10.5, Vista, and a desktop in a non-small-form-factor case.
- PeterMeh, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6
Being cynical... OK... So the currently generation chips are going to drop in price... and new faster chips are going to come out...
I thought thats the way it always works... - lostngone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is Apple the only one making Computers with these Chips?
Why should people wait to buy a Intel Based Mac and not wait to buy other systems with the Core Duo or Core Solo in them? Will this price drop only effect Apple??? - zunipus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4OT: The term 'Macinteltosh' is obnoxious and stupid. Kill it.
'Macintel' is clever.
'Macinteltosh' is retarded. - Odiwan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm pretty sure Apple works by upgrading the computer and keeping the same price, not lowering the price.
- flyindutchman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I thinking 2.33 is not the big upgrade in chips. Supposedly the successor to Yonah is coming out in the Fall and is *supposed* to be a huge improvement. That may actually be worth waiting for.
- Dakk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'm NOW enjoying 10.4, have the power to run Windows XP if I choose, and if I want to take up space, I can put a large cardboard box on my desk.
- kevnaca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3There are people who wait and there are people who want to have it now. Honestly 2.33Ghz isn't a whole lot of a boost in performance. The people who do wait are the one's who want something like putting back the dual layer support on the superdrive or the bigger screen. Apple is known for having some of the most costly computers in exisitence and I don't possibly see the Macbook Pros dropping in price anytime soon. This new chip most likely will end up in the 17 incher and possibly an option for the 15.4 incher. But if you want a new MBP and thinking about waiting, you're still getting a great deal if you get one now. Sure there is no way to tell where Apple is going but they aren't going to do any drastic changes to the current MBP.
- filovirus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Waiting for the MacBook with Core Solo and hopefully a decent ATI GPU. I don't need a mammoth laptop. I need portablity, battery life, and some decent graphics power for mild gaming. With all the reports of the MBP cooking laps, I hope the MB is a decent tradeoff.
Hoping to play WOW at medium detail with decent framerates. - diggerphelps, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Buy a Mac when you need it.
There's always a new more powerful, cheaper Mac coming down the pike.
With Macs, of course, "cheaper" is relative.
As in, "you gotta have a relative that works for Apple to get a Mac cheaper."
And the relative better be named "Steve Jobs." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3If you're going to wait until June, you might as well wait until (early) August and WWDC
- jmac7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I cant wait for the 17 inch Macbook pro. why lock yourself out of OSX
by gettin' a dell ? - deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6It's no the poster's term, it's the article's.
- KingAdrock, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3its "before june" right now
- rblinne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's 4 GB per process limit. This is only needed for things like the semiconductor design software I write. The PowerMacs are used for scientific applications. It is there where we will most likely see the 64-bit processors show up. Editting HD video is another place where you might want 64-bit. For most consumer applications it is overkill. 64-bit computers don't give you much if any performance boost. The silicon space is better spent giving you more 32-bit cores or larger on-chip caches.
- ddfall, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4My thought on buying a new MacBook Pro (I have a 12" Powerbook now and I'm DYING for a new system already even though mine is currently still top of the line) is that it's a good idea to wait for 10.5 to come out and get the first one that comes out after that. This way, new features that are added in 10.5 will be included (Without having to shell out 129) and it's guaranteed to work with Boot Camp (As it ships with 10.5 per Apple's site). Then there's the problem of getting the money for it. Guess you'll have to sell some of those organs that you're so fond of...
- Dietrich, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Apple will not lower their prices, they will just up their speeds. They like the 2,000-2,500 mark for pro laptops.
- SyDIGG, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5This affect Apple because they can upgrade the MacBook Pro line and have it at the same price point and introduce the MacBook (formerly iBook) and have it start at $999. May I add it falls right in line with the rumors of new MacBooks in 30-90 days.
- kevnaca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Once you go Mac, you may never go back.
- aresef, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's a good six months old. I bought it for just under $1500 after warranty, etc., and it goes on eBay for $750-1000. Since I'm trying to save up for other things right now, I'll hold off until after the warranty runs out.
- bnn3xa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3the is a better chance they just upgrade the CPU
- dexim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Apple is a hardware company. They make most of their profit from hardware, not software. Also there are a lot of people who would like to have a mac, but are stuck with Windows because software they need is not ported to OS X. If Apple can lure in those customers, they will make a lot more profit.
- flyindutchman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I think Boot Camp is a prelude to something bigger. I think Apple is developing a way to run Windows IN OSX. If you think about it, most regular people don't know anything about dual boot and such, but if you tell them OSX will run ANY program regardless of OS , that is something they may understand. Plus dual booting is a pain in the ass.
- joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2As many, many have said, this likely won't change the retail price of a MacBook.
However, rumour has it that June is when the iBooks are coming, so that may be a reason to wait. Alas, I don't think the iBooks will use the dualcore, and, I imagine, anyone wanting to run XP in virtualization would really appreciate having the dual core.
"Apple is known for having some of the most costly computers in exisitence"
This is really such a well-ingrained urban legend that it just will never die, will it? Really, Apple machines are about the same as any machine of comparable quality. Even *I* didn't believe it until I had to comparison shop for some laptops a year ago. - kabz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, but I managed to pick up my maxed out PowerBook 12" for about $1500, with an educational discount of $200 + a free iPod Mini. This was 9 months ago, and there probably still isn't a nicer machine for the money out there.
I might have managed to pick up something decent for $1200 or so, but my gf's $1000 Compaq Presario is toast now, due to basically just falling apart, and the famous Presario power connector problem ($300 / repair).
I'm hoping this PB will just keep on trucking. The only comparable machine I've ever owned was a IBM Thinkpad 600X, which is pretty similar apart from the processor. Both great machines.
Spend the money and don't buy crap, you won't regret it. - chicksdigme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I question the reliability of this post. No other site has similar reporting
