- sigginike90, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1FIANALLY I CAN PLAY BATTLEFIELD 2 now wait i don't have an intel mac, well guess i'll just have to start saving up again
- benliong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It'd probably be a better solution than installing Windows on the Mactel machines. Most of the time there're really only one or two windows applications that I really need to use. No point rebooting for them.
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I would appreciate it if interested Digg users could link to sites or blogs that make both regular and impressive use of Darwine. Not just opening Notepad or something."
I would be interested in knowing why you dont think that opening notepad on osx isnt impressive - darkten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"personally i think its pretty cool to take system calls from one os and convert them to another os with such little overhead."
True THAT. What does run does so in a very snappy manner. - janrpeters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can anybody test whether Scientific Workplace works on WINE with Intel Mac OS X? A fully functional trial version can be downloaded from http://www.mackichan.com. If it would run well enough, that would be a reason for me to directly place an order for a new intel mac!
- amoona, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1he reason that notepad is less impressive than an app running is that they have their own notepad
http://www.dreaminguy.com http://www.smilenut.cn - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Is anyone working on OSXine? i.e. run Mac programs within Windows?"
I'm sure that will get you crucified by some people..
Anyway, has anyone tried games..?
I wonder, assuming it'd work (I doubt it though), if Root Kit (or Rootkit?) Revelear works..
- Ben - ucg1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I simply meant what photostory pointed out, run the real thing. you want windows ? fine run windows, want mac ? run mac."
Why would you want to run the real thing when a compatibility layer works fine? Personally, I run Windows in VMWare on my Linux box, do you think I should be running it natively? Why would I run it natively when it works fine in VMWare? How is it different for WINE? If the app runs fine in WINE, why would I startup a seperate OS just to run an app? Why would I go through the pain of managing a Windows installation (whether its in a VM or not) just to run an app? Why wouldn't I want to use the same filesystem as my main OS?
WINE doesn't really work for my uses of Windows, but if it did, I would definitely ditch VMWare and just use WINE.
I think its awesome that WINE is being ported to OS X. You can't run OS X apps on anything but OS X. Linux/UNIX apps can be ported to OS X. Now if Windows app can run, you can run apps from the 3 major desktop OS's all in one OS. If you fail to see the value in that, than you really just don't use computers for as much as some of us do. - Avian00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is the start of something wonderful. This is just the kick WINE needs to bring their software up to a standard it's never done before. Imagine a day when we won't be tied to Windows to run the apps you need to do business or play games. I'm intrigued by where this will take us.
- baranovich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can use Wine to run applications that need to be installed? Or can you only run simple "no install necessary" programs?
- Argentice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is anyone working on OSXine? i.e. run Mac programs within Windows?
- Argentice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I won't be really impressed until I see Windows Calculator working! :)
- darkten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hi...I'm the one that posted this on the osx86project.org website in the forums. Personally, I think they got waaaaay to excited about it :)
- deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, there is Mac on Linux and Mac on Mac, both PPC currently, but open source, so maybe it's possible.
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"Because notepad sucks?"
yes very good, i am stunned by your argument. please leave me in awe again. really, why would you down a whole project just because they happened to run notepad. personally i think its pretty cool to take system calls from one os and convert them to another os with such little overhead. - psients, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would appreciate it if interested Digg users could link to sites or blogs that make both regular and impressive use of Darwine. Not just opening Notepad or something.
It would be real news if Mac users were taking obscure but valuable Windows programs and, well, owning them. - crunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Knowing wine, the reason that notepad is less impressive than an app running is that they have their own notepad (and some other windows apps), thus these can be built and run the abillity nessacarily to run 'proper' windows apps.
- liava, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just hope that Apple is willing to help out the Wine project. It'd be really cool if Apple could assign a few paid developers to the Wine project to help get additional applications running, since that would probably also carry over to Linux. At least Wine uses the LGPL, so they can't make a closed-source fork, like they did with their OS.
- liava, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nevermind, I did some searching and you're right: Darwin is completely open. I don't know how I didn't know that already. Thanks for pointing out my mistake. Still, though Apple seems to get along fine with their own open source projects, when it comes to collaborating with others (like KHTML), they need some work.
- sHARD>>, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@SpazticChips
WINE hasn't really worked on the released Intel Macs, now it's working quite well (ie: quite usable). That's the difference :D - The_Ox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Check out the screenshots on the forum on this site.
- darkten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"At least Wine uses the LGPL, so they can't make a closed-source fork, like they did with their OS."
This statement is completely inaccurate and uninformed in virtually every conceivable way :) - spullara, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For people that don't want to figure out how to build things:
http://www.javarants.com/B1823453972/C1242049796/E20060208003301/index.html - masskurec, on 03/03/2009, -0/+0finally wine for mac
http://xptweak.net - thyratron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I look forward to using this when I get an Intel Mac. It's useful to be able to run a Windows app once in a while, and I don't want to pay MS or resort to pirated MS software to do it.
If this gets popular enough, perhaps some guidelines can be given to Windows developers to avoid problematic code and maximize performance.
Does WINE have the ability to disable network support? That might be useful if there is a risk of running Windows malware.
There's one OS I want to run more than Windows though. OS 9.
As I understand it, Apple didn't support it in Rosetta. I understand why - the whole OS would be running in emulation, not just the PPC apps, so it'll be slower. But considering the hardware OS 9 apps were written for, it should be fast enough. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks like Apple users will be getting Half Life after all!
:-
D
Took 8 years, but hey, Half Life is timeless! - SpazticChips, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lolol...taking other peoples work
Sounds like Microsoft all the time. ALL THE TIME. - smokebomb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Up until this point it HAS NOT AT ALL been easy to get Wine running on the Intel Macs.
An out-of-the-box solution that runs many windows apps side by side OSX apps is a very, very big deal.
In the coming months is will become a major feature of OS X - rgoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This could be an interesting opportunity for windows apps on OSX
- crossers, on 07/19/2008, -0/+0I hope that Apple is willing to help out the Wine project.

What did I tell you?! I know it's innacurate, just a funny link. - greenears2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now... How long will it be before we see the much promised CrossOver Office for Intel Mac (promised by CrossOver last year) and Cedega (no promises yet, but some polling in the transgaming forums)?
It is the beginning of the end... The MS gaming monopoly is almost over in PC land (unless everyone starts using only XBoxes, hehehe). The app monopoly is now about to collapse... - grayapple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All I can do is run little stupid apps like clock and the wine notepad, I'd love to see (for example) WinAmp running.
- liava, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This statement is completely inaccurate and uninformed in virtually every conceivable way :)
How so? The kernel is based on BSD, which is licensed in such a way that it can be copied and nothing contributed back. Does Apple make their kernel open source somewhere, because I was always under the impression that they didn't?
Even so, their track record with projects like KHTML has been less than impressive, with the KDE community having to nag them endlessly for a changelog (I know, that's vastly oversimplified, but it's pretty much what happened). I think Apple is still learning to get along with Open Source, at least as a contributor. - liava, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@zetsurin
I'm not saying Apple did anything wrong, legally. They did do all that was required, but they didn't help the KDE people at all. As for me being a retard, well, maybe, but answer me this: do the BSD people take patches to Darwin and use them with BSD? If not, it just shows, once again, that Apple is much better at "fork and run" than actually cooperating with the open source community. If so, well, then Apple is 1/2 in my book.
P.S. If you've read the links, why would you need to take my word for it? - griz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The screen shots show it running WinZip. Big deal. I can unzip an app with Stuffit. Great idea, but is it really practically useful at this point?
- PhotoStory, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0yawn... instead of trying to get your toyota to look like a honda or vice versa, just get the real thing
- ManiacFive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"The screen shots show it running WinZip. Big deal. I can unzip an app with Stuffit. Great idea, but is it really practically useful at this point?"
Were fireworks practically useful as long range missiles? No, but they evolved into something better.
Everythigns gotta start somewhere. This is cool. - psients, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"I would be interested in knowing why you dont think that opening notepad on osx isnt impressive."
Because notepad sucks? - paddler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"wine=useless"
Your comment = useless Wine = a useful tool. Just because an app is windows based doesn't immediately make it a piece of crap. Grow up - meowcow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0complete waste of time. yeah, let me get WINE running on OSX so i can run notepad.exe and calc.exe. Who gives a *****. The whole reason to move to OSX is so you dont have to deal with windows. Why move backwards ? wine=useless
- meowcow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0ha. i never stated an app is a piece of crap because it's windows, get it right. Especially since WINE is a unix based app, how does that make sense ? I simply meant what photostory pointed out, run the real thing. you want windows ? fine run windows, want mac ? run mac.
