- woojoo, on 01/03/2008, -4/+181The iPhone without the phone with the phone.
- benguild, on 01/03/2008, -4/+59Yeah, I wish it would work on my toaster as well. ***** Apple.
- mavantix, on 01/03/2008, -4/+50Wouldn't it be easier to do with with an iPhone since it already has a mic built in? There's reason to, since you might want a lower cost cell plan but have access to unlimited free WiFi internet.
- phoomp, on 01/03/2008, -0/+30Yes, it would be easier to do with an iPhone. But, the iTouch is slimmer/sexier, has more memory and doesn't require a $60-$100/month 2 year contract.
- happyseamonster, on 01/03/2008, -0/+27That's phreaking sweet...
- Zippo, on 01/03/2008, -1/+18I just hope Skype comes out with an iPhone/iPod touch version after the SDK comes out... that would amazing.
- AceTracer, on 01/03/2008, -1/+14iPhone version? I've been waiting for a VoIP app for 7 months, I've been on the TruPhone beta waiting list for about that long and they recently told me they don't even think they're releasing it for the iPhone now.
- sockpuppets, on 01/03/2008, -1/+14while you're dancing on the sand?
- Unr3a1, on 01/03/2008, -0/+11Just got it installed on the iPhone. The interface is ugly, but usable. Tried using it with my gizmo account and it didn't work. I'll try again tomorrow.
- RobotJesus, on 01/03/2008, -3/+13You sir, are the most idiotic person I have seen in a long time.
- sint4x, on 01/03/2008, -0/+8I wish comments had a favourite option.
- Cowfrommars, on 01/03/2008, -1/+9Sure, if you have an iPhone...
- MeMongo, on 01/03/2008, -0/+7Only the 32MB version
- digdugsmug, on 01/03/2008, -2/+9Sweet! Get that man a new monitor!
- phoomp, on 01/03/2008, -0/+6Actually, if you go for the 16gb iTouch, there is *no* price difference. Where there *is* a difference, however, is in the $60-$100/month AT&T "service" plan ... $1440 to $2400 over the length of the 2 year contract.
- Jonjonjonny, on 01/03/2008, -0/+6So cool. Give these guys some credit. Plus it's only a beta. Stop whining.
- AntBing, on 01/03/2008, -1/+6You wouldn't drop your cell plan entirely, just cut back on the minutes you buy each month.
- schmimd04, on 01/03/2008, -0/+4im thinking about getting metal legs. its a risky operation
- rockefeller2, on 01/03/2008, -0/+4h
- Unr3a1, on 01/03/2008, -0/+4I've felt the same way since I just recently bought an iPhone which I can't and don't really want to activate. I'm almost positive there should be no compatibility issues between the iphone and ipod touch software since they both run on nearly the same software.
- cviebrock, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3I dunno ... up here, $45 is about what I spend on a cell phone contract per month, so this would pay for itself in that time.
- sHockz, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3this will be great when cities go wireless. I know austin texas where I live has a city wide wifi going in, and other large cities like new york and chicago are doing the same. sure will be nice to get rid of the old cell phone bill. ;-)
take that corporate america. the people will phase you out. - fkr3, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3There's plenty of wifi out there. The PSP getting Skype is one of the best things Sony have done to it. The chances of me having my PSP and being in a country where I don't have a cell phone are very high.
- woojoo, on 01/03/2008, -3/+6Thanks?
- sparced, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3the day after you give up waiting.
- Zippo, on 01/03/2008, -2/+5I see what you did there.
- gypsie, on 01/03/2008, -1/+4Huh?! You can afford $300 iPod but you can't afford $45 mic?
- bsl4doc, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3Seriously?!?! Oh my god! It's almost as if that was the whole point of developing this software/mic combo! You, madam, are the Albert Einstein of our time!
- bsl4doc, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3You've never actually been to a large city or typical office setting, have you? Wait...are you from the past? Whoooa...
- renegadeafk, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3no..
- mrjit, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2I'm pretty sure the majority of Digg users are well aware as to what voip is, but thanks.
- darkone_05, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2you could just build one
Marian's site (http://touchmods.wordpress.com/) has a full tutorial. - vapblack, on 01/03/2008, -1/+3How can you see him ?
- mph66, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Actually, most people see us going to "The Cloud" in the next 5 years. Drive around with your iTouch and see just how many open wifi spots you encounter- and those are just the "wardriving" ones. Then consider a Panera Bread, or McD's, or gas stations- the ubiquity of wifi is going to grow based on consumer demand. Wanna call home and ask the wife if she needs milk and bread on the way home? Pull into a supermarket. It's coming, and these people are going to make it happen. Calling this "***** stupid" is, well, ***** stupid.
- darkone_05, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Have you even seen the mic? Do some research.
http://touchmods.blog.com/2412701/
Also, it isn't working on any of the iphone F/W versions yet... yes the developers are for the touch, since they have them.
Again... do some research. - TheWorm, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Just block and move on.
- Haecceity, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Did you read the article?
"The Touchmodders are giving away the software and hope to make money on their iPod Touch microphone." - manbear, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2everyone in Google's home town does.
- mrgreen4242, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Well, I'd like the touch (or any wifi VoIP device, I suppose) as sort of an improved land line service. If I'm at home (or at work with wifi, or anywhere else with signal) it rings and I answer. If not, they get my voicemail. The VM is sent to me via email, which I can receive and listen to when I am next on a wifi network.
It's not as good as a cell, but has many of the advantages of a landline, without the price and with easy portability to new locations. Kind of a hybrid landline-cell type mentality, I guess. Won't be a good solution until we get some better net neutrality laws and the E911 system is working more reliably. - mistaunix, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2I use my PDA in the exact manner you describe. E911 works fine with my voip provider. I provide them with my current location; they provide my local 911 call center with this same information, electronically. Which, oddly enough, is the way E911 is designed to work. If I decide to call 911 when i'm visiting relatives in another part of the country, who's fault is it but mine if i die because I didn't update my E911 information. I'm sure in the next few years, as mobile computing advances, we will see E911v2 which will allow you to submit updated E911 location information on demand.
Don't hate the E911 service, hate the provider that did a sloppy job of implementing the E911 service. - starkruzr, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2If I was Steve Jobs and called the iPod touch an "iCar" instead, would you be bitching about how people were trying to use it as a PDA? Would you still be saying "VOIP on a car? Come on, guys."? Please don't be completely ***** ridiculous. El Steve-o can call it whatever the hell he wants. An "iPod" is a highly function-limited (by HARDWARE) device which only plays media and a few trivial games. The "iPod touch" is not an iPod. It is the new Newton, and everyone is apparently aware of it but you.
- inactive, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1No, he's from the 'burbs.
- Landonr, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Indeed thank you for that interesting post.
- DerekJ212, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1Wonder no longer: it won't.
- phoomp, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1The mic is only dodgy looking in hacked form. Once Griffin and Belkin start making them I'm sure they'll look quite nice.
- inactive, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1What? iPod Touch is a mouthful. iTouch rolls off the tongue.
- dkla, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1I wonder if this will work on our OTB 1.1.2 iphones while we're waiting for them to be unlocked... :(
- starkruzr, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Move out of *****, Midwest America, chief.
- darkone_05, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1the problem lies more in the access of the hardware, since the ipod touch is using audio in and the access to the iphone mic is different
- lucutus, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Sure you do...
