Visual Search Engine Coming to iPhone in June
gizmodo.com — Evolution Robotics ViPR visual search technology is coming to the iPhone this June. ViPR allows to take a photo of any movie, CD or book, send it to a server, and automagically get an email back loaded with information and links pointing to YouTube videos or iTunes Music Store links.

- goodhorsehymn, on 04/19/2008, -4/+1Agreed.
- DatoeDakari, on 04/19/2008, -0/+1It would be much better live.
- goodhorsehymn, on 04/19/2008, -4/+1Agreed.
- digitalpencil, on 04/19/2008, -2/+22That's freaking awesome!! Image recognition of partially obscured objects as a search tool. Can't wait to see an instant-search version that doesn't require email.
- DatoeDakari, on 04/19/2008, -1/+2Borderline augmented reality.
- dalesmatrix, on 04/19/2008, -0/+9pretty neat stuff, be cool when it's a native application so the whole process can be more streamlined and integrated (as opposed to email)
- fkr3, on 04/19/2008, -6/+4It can't be a directly native application, the size of the database it has to check against and the amount of processing it'd have to do are probably going to make that impossible for years to come. It'd be like making Google Earth a native application, the end units just don't have the resources for it.
- Zal91, on 04/19/2008, -1/+5Google Earth is a native application.
Native Application - An application designed to run in the computer environment (machine language and OS) being referenced. - meatmcguffin, on 04/19/2008, -0/+12I think he meant a native app which could take a picture and send out the email in one step, or better still, take the picture and then directly communicate with the server,
- nmnnotmyname, on 04/19/2008, -0/+1You know, at first i thought you just trolled everyone because you were a bastard.
Now because of this very post I have realized that you're just an *****...
Honestly, Did you not understand what was implied?! Sending the photo via email is the issue. So how to solve it - Move the server into the iPhone? NO! Native query application.

- kkiran, on 04/19/2008, -4/+2Sounds cool but a barcode reader (image) makes more sense : take a picture of a product in the store and find the best prices! Yeah, an app already exists but an iPhone adaptation makes it more portable and useful :)
- DamnMan, on 04/19/2008, -1/+5you want to turn your over priced iPhone into a CueCat?
- macslut, on 04/19/2008, -0/+2The late 90s called, they wanted to thank you for remembering them! Well done!
- DamnMan, on 04/19/2008, -1/+5you want to turn your over priced iPhone into a CueCat?
- sirbeta, on 04/19/2008, -2/+4It's neat, but couldn't I just do a web search for "finding nemo dvd" and get results in half the time of taking the picture, sending it to an email, then waiting for a reply? If you have an iphone, I hope to god you have internet access from it. I have to call gimmick here.
- milkmage, on 04/19/2008, -1/+3but taking a picture is more efficient than typing "finding nemo dvd" especially on a non-qwerty mobile device. read the article - you see a particular brand of wine in the store, take a picture of it and get the best prices or reviews. Cell phones in Japan can already take pictures of bar codes from a printed or ON SCREEN ad (like TV) and you get more info on the product (mc donalds has bar codes on their products to get nutrition info), and there are tons of ads on the subways that have ads. karaoke bars use the bar codes for coupons, and restaurants use them for menus. i think it's inncredibly useful functionality - now you don't need to have a specially coded ad or poster.
- rebotfc, on 04/19/2008, -0/+1It doesnt just work on products it works on locations so u can take a picture of a building and see if anyone else has tagged that with information in the ViPR database.
- jman583, on 04/19/2008, -4/+5Couldn't you do this on any smart phone with e-mail?
- legoalert33, on 04/19/2008, -2/+3Seems logical to say yes, but I have a feeling Apple will claim it for themselves.
- rebotfc, on 04/19/2008, -0/+1They said they will release a native SDK version in June.
- idslite, on 04/19/2008, -3/+11I need an iPhone...
- lolwutpear, on 04/19/2008, -2/+3No you don't.
- yarinh1, on 04/19/2008, -0/+4Wait till June. :)
- H0tKarl, on 04/19/2008, -2/+2You just want to be cool.
- BrendanSheehan, on 04/19/2008, -0/+1You don't need one, but you obviously want one ;)
- mikephimikephi, on 04/19/2008, -5/+4wow, they've had this with NTT DoCoMo is Japan for some time now.
And far less cumbersome. Everytime I visit Tokyo I always love seeing all the futuristic features their cell's have.- Philbert, on 04/19/2008, -0/+2I believe he was only doing it with email just to show how it works. I think in June they will have an app that takes the picture and sends it without needing to use email.
- n8o8, on 04/19/2008, -0/+3Identifier tech is gonna be huge...like typing huge! Facial recognition, the possibilities and applications are vast and abit frightening.
- suinmind, on 04/19/2008, -4/+2this search technology probably doesn't work well beyond the examples shown in the video.
- Philbert, on 04/19/2008, -0/+3If it would do a product search online it would be useful for making sure you're getting a good prioce in the store, before you make the purchase.
- chkdg8, on 04/19/2008, -2/+10Just wait until iPhone 2.0. We'll all be creaming in our pants.
- vmos, on 04/19/2008, -12/+1yet another awsomely pointless feature from Apple (tm) the people who brought you the virtual coke can.
I mean, lets look at it, you put in the title of a cd or a book and it returns information such as youtube or itunes links, WOW! that really is revolutionary!!!!! I'm going to buy 6 right ***** now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111111111111111
Is it really that arse crippingly difficult to type the name of a book of the title of a cd into google?- haloevo, on 04/19/2008, -2/+6Apple isn't responsible for this... at all... You immature scum. *sigh.
- yabos, on 04/19/2008, -1/+1Idiot
- smeenz, on 04/19/2008, -2/+0Hmmm.. let's see... take picture of porn star, run their app over it... get youtube links.. heh heh heh..
- fascfoo, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1There are much more easy ways of finding porn on in the internet dude.
- TheDiggin, on 04/19/2008, -2/+1$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
- BrendanSheehan, on 04/19/2008, -1/+1Thanks.
- fudged71, on 04/19/2008, -0/+1That is ridiculously cool !
This is the one 'feature' the makes me want to switch my iTouch for the iPhone - kindwarrior, on 04/20/2008, -0/+1Not impressed; I've seen equally good, perhaps better, recognition systems. The iTunes/utube search could have been written by any one of millions of high school students. What would have been cool is iPhone integration (and there was none): I want to have an active camera view that when I draw a circle around something with my index finger freezes the frame, negotiates with the server, then displays info on what I'd circled and I don't want it just for buying things (although that's that funding lever); If I'm walking in the woods and see a strange flower I want to be able to point my iPhone at it, circle the flower and find out what I'm looking at.
- nourlol, on 04/20/2008, -0/+0What a trivial application for something with so much potential. Imagine a online google version of this =). But I guess this is a good "startup project" for the company, just so they can get their roots I guess.
- taizoshiozaki, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1I saw the actual demo about a year ago. Nothing fancy, and it's practically useless without a HUGE image search index. In other words, whoever owns the database gets the most $$$.
- hwittern, on 04/21/2008, -0/+0i don't have a iPhone but i still want this thing !
- darkfus, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1Awesome idea, lame implementation. They should have a dedicated app that leverages the camera directly and give you results immediately.
