- nunofgs, on 10/11/2007, -12/+44umm, I don't think there is a single Parallels customer that does not know about this already ...
- thebrokenlight, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16Also available in VMware Fusion.
- nerditup, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Parallels is great, but this is pretty old. For the sake of some new news, and since some people didn't even know about using Boot Camp as your Parallels drive, Parallels supports 3D graphics now!
- chrisxkelley, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Yeah... been available in Parallels for the past 1000 builds or so.
Awesome, but old nonetheless. - sanarchy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8I did know about it but the walk-through is awfully convenient :)
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5It may be old, but it's the first time I've heard about it and I've been running Parallels since it was early beta.
Schawing! - mattyx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Make sure you're formatted NTFS for this to work. It wont work at all for me with FAT. On the other hand, the beta4 of Fusion by VMware works great with my boot camp partition formatted FAT.
/m/ - Ninjab3ar, on 10/11/2007, -6/+10Wow, you must be naive....
- inkhead, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Parallels DOES a HORRIBLE job of this, it modifies the Windows system files, and then copies them back when you shutdown or suspend the VM so as not to corrupt bootcamp or 'real' windows. However if you have a crash, or Windows has a crash, you can SERIOUSLY screw it up.
That's why you should be using VMware. It doesn't modify your bootcamp partition, not to mention it's faster, cheeper, and a real cocoa application. - threemagic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3VMware is NOT cheaper. It is right now because it's beta but the full release is due in August and you can pre-pay for only 39.95 or wait and buy when it comes out for 79.95... sound familiar?
- stalefries, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Shortened version:
the method Parallels uses is crack.
the method VMware uses is _not_ crack. - SgtBlue, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4And at the same time Lifehacker posted this article, complete with standard Digg form so everyone would notice it.
"AMAZINGLY BREAKING: Steve Jobs returns to Apple" - sixth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3vmware fusion is A LOT more stable trust me.
- jawngee, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3i'll second and third that.
I started out on parallels and have switched to vmware. I used to have all kinds of weird issues with parallels that have disappeared with vmware. Not to mention vmware's unity feature is definitely more integrated than coherence. With coherence, you were stuck with one monitor or desktop. With unity, you can put Windows(tm) windows on any monitor or desktop.
I wish both of them would kill the shared folders and allow you to mount your hard disks as hard disks in windows. There's network overhead with the shared folders business. When I boot camp into xp and mount my drives with MacDrive, I get throughput that's almost as good as what I get in OSX. Almost.
To the bjornski troll below:
There's actually very little work to it, and your logic is inverted. You laugh because people try so hard to run windows software on osx that you miss the obvious: they work at it BECAUSE THEY CAN. It's called having options, and if you're happy with 75%, good for you. I'll take the 98% option. - grondin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I thought the restriction to this was the license of XP. It was my understanding that MS expects you to buy a copy for your VM and another for Bootcamp. I have no need to dual-boot, so I never explored further. Does the "legit check" BS in XP do anything bad in this situation?
- paulb0t, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Welcome to last year.
- astrosmash, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Same here. I've been playing with Beta 4 tonight and Boot Camp sharing (with FAT32) worked like a charm. Unity and the Application Launcher are slick features, too. It has really come along. I also had an old suspended VM Image from Beta 3 and I was surprised with how quickly it restored the session.
I think I'll be dishing out for the $39 pre-order option, when it becomes available. - TomK, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Having never purchased Parallels and knowing that it would not support many Windows-native games (granted, 3.0 will support more, but with at least some performance cost and to gamers, this may be the *last* thing they would want to compromise) , I saw no further need to research this product. Simply put, I did not know you could use Boot Camp as your Parallels drive.
Seeing how this has made front page Digg, I suspect there are a few others in this boat.
I find this article, old as it may be for some, INCREDIBLY informative. No doubt SWsoft has probably sold a few more copies as a result at no cost to them. - skoot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Activate ^10000
- MacParrot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Seems Apple trolls have the same problem. Guess they have more in common than they may have thought.
- supermanred, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This is GREAT. I only wish I could triple-boot. My current set up is a dual boot Vista / OS X with the ability to run the vista partition from WITHIN OS X with Parallels Desktop. Additionally, I have a virtual Windows XP Parallels install, which now plays directx games (very smoothly I may add)
But I still wish I could reboot into osx, vista or xp. But currently I can only truly boot into a native os x or vista, the xp partition is still only available within OS X. I am adding some ram to my macbook, but as I type this I have XP open as well as Ubuntu Linux and I can easily switch between them and go fullscreen. - meatmcguffin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Be wary about trying it with anything other than a proper version of XP. For me at least, cut down versions such as Jacked Core refuse to work in Parallels if you install them with boot camp first.
Might just be my own bad luck but just a heads up anyway. - slimnickyy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Wow, VMware Fusion does it too.
- ckSubs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Here are my multi-booting Macbook Pro wishes:
Triple Boot (XP/OSX/Ubuntu)
Each OS has its own partition, with a 4th storage partition.
All partitions are read/write-able from any OS.
Virtualize the XP bootcamp drive from within OSX (which what this article is about)
Do the same, but the other way (is there any hope? How about for Ubuntu?)
Remap all keyboard shortcuts to the 'windows' way (***** this CMD-C *****)
Remap the F-Keys to the Macbook Pro hotkeys in all OS's (I seriously can't remember the last time I used them in Windows)
Anything else I should add? Are any of these possible as is?
- MacParrot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1All those games you play bjornski...other than Bungie, how many are made by "Windows"?
/sarcasm - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3One thing PC users can do that Mac users can't...
http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=macs_cant - MacParrot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1As a Mac and Windows user, I have to say that I have no hate for Microsoft (I use Office for Mac at home and WinXP at work). It seems foolish to waste any time hating something that I have no emotional attachment to nor any potential financial gain or loss. Unfortunately, too many on both sides of the argument waste many photons on perpetuating this nonsense.
Let it go guys. MS won the desktop, Apple still exists, we (people who prefer one or the other) both are able to do as we please. - SunAlex, on 09/06/2008, -0/+0This is not new thing for me, but good article. May be there are people who don't know about this.

http://search.ashtech.info/world%20news - BryanFeelsGood, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0You could run the virtualizing of XP off of boot camp in 2.0, but the problem is you can virtualize and boot camp Vista, but Parallels won't allow you to virtualize a Vista Boot Camp Partition, which is what I want.
- jmousseau44, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Why is it that I see so many "fluff" stories appearing here? As was stated above this is nothing new. I love how people write pieces with what seems to be the single goal of getting "dugg" to drive web traffic. One of digg's downfalls. No wonder so many people (try to) get rich off the web...
- gibson424, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I have boot camp with Windows installed and I tried using a trial version of parallels a while ago but it wouldn't allow me to use the boot camp partition as its drive. I read that that would be a new feature in a future version...am i completely wrong?
- mindule, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I heard that in leopard you can switch without rebooting from mac to windows?
- kkapoor, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I watched a demo video of VMware's Fusion Beta 4 on TUAW (http://www.tuaw.com/2007/06/13/tuaw-video-vmware/) And I have to say that it seems a lot more polished and streamlined then Parallels solution. It might not have 3D support but I would never run a game in a virtualised environment. Additionally it seems like Game Developer's are starting to make a come back on the Mac platform. I'd love to see a side by side comparison review.
- cagg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0So true! I recently installed a Vista partition thru Boot Camp then foolishly tried to use it in Parallels. Well parallels crashed while trying to start it so now the partition will no longer boot into Windows. Naturally, System Restore in Vista is no more useful than it was in XP, so I will have to reinstall.
- jlanners, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0from here: http://www.parallels.com/en/news/id,11791
Vista Boot Camp Support: Existing Windows Vista Boot Camp partitions, as well as Windows XP Boot Camp partitions can be run in a Parallels virtual machine. Users can switch between running Windows in Parallels Desktop and Boot Camp as often as they would like.
Why does the article say this isn't possible? - astrosmash, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Yes. You can hibernate your Mac session and un-hibernate into Windows, and vice versa. That will prove to be a killer feature for those who need to dip into Windows occasionally.
- astrosmash, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1*plonk*
- A14049752, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I'm mildly bitter about Parallels since yesterday. Apparently my product key no longer works on the newly released beta...even though it really only feels like it's a minor update since the last build I was able to run. Admittedly, I didn't bother to look into the issue, but I assume they're chargine an upgrade fee?
Oh well, I MUCH rather prefer booting natively anyway, when I need Windows. - meatmcguffin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1You can't expect people to take you seriously when you say "Mac" should be making software
Anyway, the iLife suit is still unsurpassed as a consumer product - kiensoy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Nice... submitted by mklopez.
- bobcrotch, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3Hey dude lay off lifehacker, their target audience is the below average user who was sucked into a time warp forcing them to read news thats no less than 6 months out of date.
This *IS* the main function of the application, I dunno maybe they should have an expose on how internet explorer can render HTML, Flash, and Java?
Get real. - bjornski, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2Working SO hard to run Windows software.
Why doesn't Mac actually offer some software that people want to run, and people might SWITCH? - jimimidi, on 10/11/2007, -5/+0GREAT ITEM
- malcolmreynolds, on 10/11/2007, -9/+4OR you could just stick with a PC, for which most software is made.
- basichuman, on 10/11/2007, -17/+11umm, I didn't know about it.
